Your Last Meal

An Afternoon Comment Diversion / Dustin Rowles

Today’s comment diversion is flat-out silly and it has nothing really to do with a pop-culture site. But, it’s summer, and there are only a few inspirations running on the telly right now. So, I’ll admit that — when suffering from televised-flicker withdrawal — I have watched the two food shows currently airing in primetime now, “Hell’s Kitchen” and “Top Chef,” the latter of which is one of the TV Whore’s favorites (and a topic of discussion in Constance’s first book review). Personally, I don’t see a lot of appeal in shows that feature food that I can’t eat, but I kind of dig that Gordon Ramsay (especially in the few episodes of “Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares” I’ve managed to catch on BBC) and there’s a certain viewing comfort to “Top Chef.”

So, how well will the food topic lend itself to a comment diversion? Beats me. But, since we all eat (except for certain starletards), it is something we should all be able to discuss. Besides, you can learn a lot about a person by his or her favorite foods — it can reveal a lot about one’s background, e.g., when middle-class folks let slip that their favorite comfort foods come in a microwavable pouch — that’s a former latchkey kid for you. Steak-ums: Mmmm.

So, the question is this: You’ve been put on death row. You get one last meal before you die. What is it?

I’ll start us off (and maybe end us, too — if this diversion sinks like I imagine): Annie’s Mac n’ Cheese with twice the recommended amount of butter (fuck it, it’s my last meal); those little G&W microwavable pizzas I used to get when I was a kid for $.49; and a steak burrito from Anna’s Taqueria. To drink: A pitcher of Sangria from Dali, a fine Tapas restaurant in Cambridge.

For dessert: Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup cereal. Yes — the trailer trash runs deep in me.

Bring on the chair, bitches.

Comments

i'd have to go with a plentiful helping of chicken tikka masala with some naan and vegetable pakoras (so the whole room can smell me when they turn on the juice for the electric chair).

follow that with a caterpillar roll and some eel nigiri.

wash it down with some woodford reserve and coke.

then finish with a cookie dough blizzard (extra cookie dough, please) with hot fudge mixed in.

So...you like Boston.

I'm going to say:

The Macedonian Breakfast from Sabur in Sommerville (OMG! good. Try it, Dustin)
bread and oil from Bravo! along with their spinach and artichoke dip

Fresh pineapple, cherries, and honeydew melon

And I'm going to second that pitcher of Sangria from Dali.

I'm going to be drunk and bloated as all hell when I die.

Posted by: Kate at June 25, 2007 2:40 PM

Mmmm. General Tao's Tofu from the Shanghai Restaurant here in Ottawa, extra veggie spring rolls, served with a nice glass of an off-dry riesling (damn right this thing will be quasi-snobby... it's my last meal, bitches!). Then for dessert I need some insane combination of my mom's apple pie, gobs of chocolate and Cool Whip, topped with copious amounts of raspberries and strawberries and ice cream. And then maybe some kind of deliciously ironic fortune cookie. Tadaaah!

Posted by: b at June 25, 2007 2:45 PM

Fried chicken dinner with extra bowls of gravy for me to eat like soup. God I love gravy.

For dessert, a smorgasbord of cookies. They all have to be giant, squishy, and loaded with chunks of nuts, candy and/or chocolate.

I'll go with the sangria idea for my beverage. Yummy.

Sometimes I'm truly surprised that I don't weigh 300 pounds.

DINNER
Shrimp & Grits (from my favorite local restaurant)
NY strip - med.rare
Fried Chicken (possibly Popeye's)
sweet potatoes
sauteed green beans

plus anything that's southern cooking would be fine with me.

BEVERAGE
Diet Coke
Parenga sparkling shiraz
Chardonnay

DESSERT
cheesecake
banana pudding
something gooey and chocolate

Posted by: wsapnin at June 25, 2007 2:49 PM

Well, I'm a good southern girl, so...

Fried chicken and collard greens (nice and spicy), sweet potato casserole, homemade mac and cheese and spoon bread. KFC biscuits (the only decent thing coming out of KFC). Maybe some sharp cheddar cheeze grits and a huge slice of pecan pie to top it off. With Vanilla ice cream.

To drink? Lemonade. Bu the gallon.

Actually this sounds like the dinner I made for thanksgiving last year. Weird.

Posted by: vaguelyamish at June 25, 2007 2:50 PM

Well, since I'm going to Hell for making fun of retarded kids and being pro choice, let's kick this pig:

Appetizer: Boneless Buffallo strips from Karl Strauss Brewery

Main Course: Pernil (Puerto Rican dish: Seasoned, stewed pork) with white rice and beans, with a side of fried plantains (sweet).

Dessert: Brownie Sundae with Hot Fudge

Ohhhhh yeah, that seats gonna be messy when they throw that switch, baby.

And Dustin, kudos for the Steak-Umm reference. My fiance has no clue about the joy of Steak-Umm.

Posted by: Manny at June 25, 2007 2:52 PM

I would have the perfect blt on rye bread (bacon just right not soggy, not burned). Steak fries on the side seasoned with paprika and a mojito to drink. Dessert turtle cheesecake. Calories not being a problem would be fantastic.

Posted by: Kate at June 25, 2007 2:54 PM

Yay! Food post.

I would have to say an order of shumai and Godzilla, Spider & Alaskan rolls from my favorite Japanese restaurant; (which has since changed hands -- sob!) a bottle of champagne; (preferably something too expensive to have previously experienced) and for dessert, an array of artisan truffles from my favorite local cafe, Haute Chocolate. (check 'em: hautecafe.net)

Posted by: litelysalted at June 25, 2007 2:54 PM

Another Southern gal here ...
Fried chicken strips with a peppered white gravy (woo hoo - not having to worry about my heart clogging would almost make it worth .... nahhhh)
Cold spinach pie (yeah I'm Greek too)
Homemade mac n cheese

And for dessert ... brownies fresh out of the oven with chocolate ice cream and homemade fudge sauce

Posted by: mystteree at June 25, 2007 3:00 PM

fried ravioli with marinara
greek salad
eggplant parmesan
garlic mashed potatoes
garlic bread- extra garlic
tiramisu
mint iced tea

Posted by: anikitty at June 25, 2007 3:02 PM

Hmmm...ok, I would have to go with a shrimp & chicken stir fry from Stir Crazy, one of the best Thai restaurants in Chicago, IMO. That's probably enough for the first three courses, with all the veggies and amazing sauce they add in.

Beverage: A pitcher of strawberry/mango Daiquiris. Margaritas are good, but I prefer rum. If not booze, then Sprite or lemonade.

For dessert: I never eat dessert, but this is my last meal, after all, so mint chocolate chip ice cream from Coldstone Creamery, or Baskin Robbins, with marshmallows and hot fudge.

Posted by: Brie at June 25, 2007 3:03 PM

Because I'm a southern girl at heart, I will have: sweet tea, fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy. Peach cobbler and homemade vanilla ice cream. But then for fun, and I'll gorge since it is my last meal, add in some pinot grigio, brie cheese, baguette, and fresh strawberries.

It doesn't have to go together, it is my last meal.

Posted by: libraryliz at June 25, 2007 3:03 PM

I'd probably just have a bottle of La Fin du Monde beer. The food I'd ask for and probably wouldn't eat? Christmas breakfast at my parents' house:

A perfectly ripe d'Anjou pear
An omelette with cheese, onions, peppers and ham
KFC Biscuits with my mom's gravy
Fruit pizza (pastry from our favorite local bakery)

Posted by: Just Joe at June 25, 2007 3:04 PM

My mom makes Pecan-Crusted Chicken that's to die for, but it was the best the first time she made it and it's never quite lived up to that first time. If it could be duplicated just like that, that's my bar-none final meal choice. You've got the chicken with mashed potatoes (again, last meal, so lay on the heavy whipping cream instead of the lower-fat chicken broth in there). Then some of the pecans fall off and you mix it in with the potatoes. Dear God. So good. Also, a Caesar salad, with Girard's light Caesar dressing.

To drink, um, a well-paired wine would be nice. No preference on that one. Dessert, too, I don't tend to be picky about. Something with a brownie and vanilla ice cream and raspberry sauce sounds nice right now.

Of course, part of me was tempted to just say a burger and fries from In-N-Out with a neopolitan shake.

Posted by: Ben at June 25, 2007 3:06 PM

Apparently it's cliche, but fried chicken all the way (maybe popeyes) mashed potatoes, gravy and an apple pie with caramel topping from my hometown restaurant.

Posted by: Amanda at June 25, 2007 3:06 PM

Sadly, no matter how many five star restaurants I've been to around Boston, not one dish stood out as something I need to eat before I die.

The only food that comes to mind is a bacon cheeseburger from Wild Willy's in Watertown with a vanilla milkshake and fries. For dessert, a molten chocolate cake from Finale.

Posted by: Lex at June 25, 2007 3:06 PM

I am the product of a stay-at-home-mom (back when it was the norm--I'm not judging, just very lucky) so my last meal would consist of my mom's homemade chicken and dumplings (rolled not dropped), fresh-from-the-garden and fresh-from-the-cob creamed corn (made in an iron skillet) with fresh-from-the-garden lightly chilled sliced tomatoes. For dessert, I would like my sister's homemade bread pudding with Maker's Mark sauce. Yeah, festival of starches but hey, it IS my final meal.

Posted by: Buttercup at June 25, 2007 3:11 PM

Just a question for the Pajiba writers, especially those that live or have lived around Boston:

Do any of you know the writers at The Weekly Dig? Cause...I feel like you might get along.

Posted by: Kate at June 25, 2007 3:12 PM

My grandma's biscuits and gravy, my dad's spinach bread, a slice of Lou Melnotti's pizza, my brother's BBQ chicken, my friend Gina's mom's kimchee (with daikon radish, OMG), and a chocolate soufflé with raspberry chocolate sauce, finished off with a glass of Dogfishhead Raison d'etre beer.

Damn, termination sounds pretty fucking good right now...

APP:

Seared Foie Gras w/ Sauternes

Lobster Ceviche

MAIN:

- Barbecue Ribs, Brisket, and Hot Links from this BBQ shack right off I-45/I-75 in Dallas near my wife's old apartment

- Grilled Cheese Sandwich (Yellow American on Wonder Bread of course)

- Corn on the Cob

- Anything my mom used to make [ sniff :( ]

BEVERAGES:

- Gallons of Thai Ice Tea

- Del's Frozen Lemonade (it's a Massachusetts thing)

DESSERT:

- Warm freshly baked brownie

- Banoffee Pie

- Chocolate Bread Pudding

- Lemon gelato from this place by the Trevi Fountain in Rome

That was great fun! I think I'd have a heart attack while the meal was progressing.

Posted by: Groovekiller at June 25, 2007 3:15 PM

Fried okra from my grandmother's recipe for an appetizer,
She-crab soup from Charley's in Virginia Beach(although I hear they've gone downhill and am woeful over that),
Chicken marsala from the recipe in Jennifer Crusie's book Bet Me(Seriously the best chicken marsala recipe I've ever found),
garlic mashed potatoes,
a romaine, radicchio, and arugula salad with blue cheese and dried cranberries on top and O olive oil's Balsamic vinegar instead of dressing,
a pineapple-topped cheesecake cupcake from the upmarket grocery near my office,
Diet coke,
A glass of a really nice chardonnay.
I'd be pretty pissed about the impending death, but this sounds like a pretty excellent meal, even if the components really don't hang together at all.

Call me boring but for my last meal I would want a bacon cheeseburger and fries with a tall cool Bud Light to wash it down. For dessert, just some cookie dough ice cream.

Posted by: Stan at June 25, 2007 3:20 PM

Fun! OK, so: My mom's Poulet Roti aux Herbes de Provence (which is roast chicken and potato and herbs, but she's French, bitch) and my dad's cheese grits with Kelly sausage (made only in Elba, Alabama) and some collards with pepper sauce, followed by giant plate of French cheeses (Mimolette, chevre, St. Andre, oh god...)and a fresh baguette, then some hot beignets and cafe au lait from the Cafe du Monde, New Orleans. So, lots of traveling before I get fried!

Great, now I have to go to Whole Paycheck and the French Quarter on my day off. Damn you, Pajiba!

Posted by: isabelle at June 25, 2007 3:22 PM

God, ya'll are making me hungry!
Yeah, I'm southern too and would have to go with a lot of what has already been mentioned, like homemade mac 'n cheese, spicy turnip greens, and biscuits,(tho not from KFC-I'll give 'em my own recipe) plus my Maw Maw's tomato gravy that I used to eat like soup. But I want me some already peeled boiled shrimp, a friggin barrell full! And after that, a big pan of blueberry cheesecake. And ditto on the Sangria.
I wish I didn't have to die to get that meal.

Posted by: Serenade at June 25, 2007 3:23 PM

Can't decide. Do, however, know my last meal would have to contain kalamata olives, eggplant roasted to liquid softness, avocado with lime and chilis, and cheese cheese cheese cheese and cheese (samples from all over the world).

And a glass of antique Chateau Lafite.

And the most perfect Eccles cake ever baked.

Posted by: Ranylt at June 25, 2007 3:30 PM

A plate of Tacos Al Pastor from Matt's El Rancho (Austin, TX), with a pitcher of Mexican Martinis to make me pleasantly numb before the actual execution.

For dessert, my grandmother's berry cobbler, made from fresh dewberries, warmed and topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Posted by: Julie at June 25, 2007 3:31 PM

My mom makes these awesome spare ribs from a recipe Julia Child gave out on Good Morning America in the late-70s. So those, a growler of Uncle Sam Oatmeal Stout from the Troy Pub and Brewery, a chihuahua from Crif Dog in NYC (a hot dog wrapped in bacon with sour cream and slices of avocado), and some Belgian fries from Pommes Frites with horseradish mayo. And for dessert, a Chipwich.

Posted by: Bullfrog at June 25, 2007 3:34 PM

Giant burrito with carnitas (slow roasted pork - sweet Jesus above, it's tasty), pintos, sliced avocados (or really good guac), fiery hot salsa, and sour cream from any number of taquerias in the Mission in San Fran. I DREAM OF THEM.

To drink, I'll steal the above ideas - Sangria would taste GREAT with a burrito.

For dessert - dark chocolate flourless torte with a biting red raspberry sauce to cut the richness.

Then several shots of good whiskey and you can throw the switch.

Posted by: Tammy at June 25, 2007 3:35 PM

3 dozen hot wings from the Anchor Bar in Buffalo NY, a basket of waffle fries, 4 wet naps, and 2 dozen heinekin lights.

My mother's spaghetti bolognese, forever and ever amen. As many servings as I can eat. Water will be fine to drink.

Posted by: bristlesage at June 25, 2007 3:36 PM

Wow, am I the only Canadian here? And the only veggie? :S Though you guys are making me miss my meat-eating days, hehe... some of that fried chicken stuff sounds gooood right now!

Posted by: b at June 25, 2007 3:36 PM

Baked ziti with four cheeses, garlic bread, and a glass of chianti.

Then for dessert, I would like one of those tiered silver trays filled with little napoleons, eclaires, lemon tarts, etc., and a big pot of coffee. I was born a pastry hound, and I'll die a pastry hound.

Great diversion! Total fantasy meal. This could not be eaten in one sitting but each part has been thoroughly enjoyed at different times.

Appetizers: Tapas from Guadalupe Cafe in Malaga, Spain. Served with Saumur "Champagne" from Loire Valley, France.

Fish Course: Lobster Victoria from The Raffles Hotel in Singapore. Served with Gewurtraminer from Alsace/Lorraine.

Pasta: Rissoto w/ White and Black Truffles from the Vincenzo in Rome, Italy. Served with an Autralian Shiraz.

Entree: Venison Chops from the Chateau de Pont in Rilly, France. Served with a 1997 Chateauneuf de Pape.

Vegetables: Zuchini Frito from The Four Seasons, New York.

Salad: Caprese Marisco from the Villa Convento in Sienna, Italy. Served with a 2004 Vouvray.

Cheese: Stilton w/ carmelized walnuts and assorted pears. Served with a Porto Riserva.

Dessert: My aunt's Rice Custard ("Natillas") served w/ Homemade Irish Cream.

Liquor: Hennesey VSOP.

Since we are going for fantasy here: I want it served to me by Chris Meloni in the Bahia Verdi on the top floor of the Carioca Hotel in Rio de Janeiro.

This is awful....and I'm in the middle of a mid-day snack run that I'm fighting against.

1)Let's see - filet mignon, medium rare and bananas foster from Brennen's in Orleans (I'm an Ohioan, I still dream about that meal!)

2)Big bowl of grits with real butter and sugar

3)Steak fries sprinkled with parmesan cheese, salt and dipped in ketchup

4)Order of pineapple fried rice with chicken, spice value 4 from Thai 9 (yummy, if you come to Dayton, you must try!) And yes, I know nobody wants to come to Dayton. LOL

5)Skyline chili dog

6)Jamocha almond fudge ice cream

7)Beverages - Coke, tons of it and two bottles of plum wine.

(This meal will be eaten in no particular order but is a culmination of my guilty pleasures and need to leave a horrible mess behind in the wake of my death.)

Posted by: Jessi at June 25, 2007 3:39 PM

Being from Southern Indiana and not too picky I would say a good club sandwich and waffle fries would do me over. And a well chilled bottle of green apple soda.

Posted by: Travis at June 25, 2007 3:41 PM

To start: Chili cheese fries. The kind that are such a mess you have to eat them with a fork. Also some seared foie gras. (Not mixed together, though. Blecch.)

Entree: Filet mignon, medium rare. Garlic mashed red potatoes (with bits of the skins mashed in). Iceberg lettuce salad drowned in ranch dressing.

Dessert: A pint of Ben & Jerry's Creme Brulee ice cream.

Drink: Mango mojito from Orleans in Somerville.

I've actually said this as I've eaten the meal: "Gosh, this would be totally what I wanted if I had to die tomorrow". Geoffrey's (Boston) has since closed, but I would make the feds find that chef (I'm going to federal prison, no small potatoes state stuff). The meal:
Pepper-encrusted seared tuna steak on garlic-mashed potatoes on garlic-seared baby spinach. I want to stink and say I ate "baby" in my last meal (I can't be rehabilitated - off to the chair) with Cakebread chardonnay and assorted gin cocktails to drink. Maybe a godiva/vodka/bailey's concoction with dessert: a chocolate pudding cake with real vanilla bean ice cream and hot fudge. I will have so much alcohol that I will flambe.

And, before I die, samplings of the following: Dali goat cheese Tapas (can't get it out of my mind now, Dustin!) with the sangria, of course.
A serving of my mom's chicken a la king and 2 biscuits. Casa de Pedro's tequenos and their shredded beef which I think has crack in it (I went for lunch 6 times in two weeks after the first time I had it). If I had any more room left, my mom's vanilla-raspberry parfait and one of her whoopie pies. She makes awesome desserts, but the chicken a la king was my favorite meal as a kid.

When I gain 10 pounds this week, I blame pajiba!

Posted by: staramour at June 25, 2007 3:47 PM

I'm going to go with the hometown favorite all-the-way pizza from melting pot...no not the fondue place we actually have a pizza place named that. Also, since I'm going to be dead soon anyway I'd have to have a baked sweet potato with cinnamon butter!
Beverage-sweet tea and not that nasty nestea crap it must be real sweet tea...also available at the melting pot
dessert-another local restaurant does this thing called a chocolate chimichanga that is a hershey bar in a tortilla deep fried with ice cream on top...AMAZING

Posted by: JMURAE at June 25, 2007 3:48 PM

Dustin, your meal was really depressing. The word "microwave" should not be present... :)

Mine:

-- Twice baked potatoes with a ton of cheese and butter
--Cream of potato soup with wild rice with lots of bread and butter for dipping
-- Roasted Chicken with stuffing and corn.
-- Shrimp scampi with rice
-- Tortellini Carbonera
-- Cinnamon rolls and chocolate lava cake for dessert.

Venison steaks, pounded tender, dipped in flour and fried in butter. And a "hawaiian hamburger" (named by my father, no, he's not Hawaiian): venison burger mixed with worcheshtire sauce with a kraft single melted INSIDE.

Serve the meat with mashed potatos with corn mixed in.

Dessert: my mother's pumpkin pie (with the crisco crust--though I doubt my mother would make me a pie if I was on death row. . .) and Ben and Jerry's chocolate fudge brownie ice cream (served separately). I'm lactose intolerant as all hell, but I'm dieing so who cares if I get the shits!

Obviously, we are your bitches. At this stage, you can post anything up there and as long as it requires us to slack off work and make lists, we will oblige. I'm not complaining, just noting.
This may seem a tad pretentious but it's my last meal so I'll assume tracking down the items on this menu can delay them long enough to let me finish Black Swan Green (damn you Pajiba book list! I am totally hooked):

1) Chips (i.e., french fries) with curry sauce (but it has to be the curry sauce they serve at Antwerp train station which is the most amazing I have ever tasted)
2) Battered cod (I gave up eating cod a few years ago because of the over-fishing and I just crave it) lashed in salt and vinegar from Henry and Roses chippie in my home town in Ireland
3) Tayto's cheese and onion crisps
4)The lamb and cranberry pie from Tea and Sympathy in NYC
5) Sherry trifle, home made, swimming in sherry
6) Lots of unpasteurized farm-made cheeses, stinky, runny, full of flavour and an enthusiastic middle finger in the air to Kraft and the USDA!
To drink (if we're assuming the sherry is a food group), mojitos from The Columbian cuban restaurant in Long Boat Key.

Posted by: PaddyDog at June 25, 2007 4:36 PM

Oh man...I shouldn't do this when I haven't food shopped in a week. I'm doing every course possible.

Appetizer: Tostadas topped with black bean spread, a slice of mango, and a drizzle of wasabi (from Blue Sage, the best vegetarian restaurant in the universe)

Salad: My mother's chicken ceasar...the dressing is so garlicky it could blind a man.

Entree: This is tough...I'd have to go with masamaun chicken curry from my favorite Thai place.

Cheese plate: Suck it bitches, I'm dying and I get a cheese plate. I want the one from Amada, a fantastic Philly tapas place, that had three cheeses with three different spreads (like chocolate hazelnut and garlic dulce de leche) and came with freshly cut baguette and green apple slices. Orgasm.

And dessert: My Aunt Tina's butter cake. It has so many calories that I'd probably die of a heart attack before they could electrocute me.

And I'd have a gallon of red sangria from my favorite place in the Village.

Posted by: Julie at June 25, 2007 4:36 PM

the bread and oil from bravo! is amazing so i will have to have that. and lasagna with meat sauce. and since it is my last meal, i also want mashed potatoes. for desert i would have creme brule and i would wash it all down with peach snapple(my second favorite food!...i realize its not really food, but i just love it that much). now i am hungry

More thai iced tea than any human should consume. Vietnamese bun salad with eggrolls and peanut sauce. Filet mignon, medium rare, with a side of remoulade. My dad's potato salad. Pate on crostini. Roast duck l'orange. Eggs benedict. Creme brulee. Bananas Foster. And an assortment of truffles.

This meal will last an entire day, dammit.

An appetizer would be calamari, fried and filled with enough flavor to soothe my taste buds.
For the main course, I'd have a pizza pie loaded with cheese and is cooked to perfection, preferably by my father, who's pizza I adore.
For my drink, I'd have the perfect chilled Iced Tea with the right amount of sweetness.
For dessert, first I will have a fruit salad loaded with berries and mangoes and oranges. Then, as many Reese's Peanut Butter Cups as I can handle. To finish it off, I'll have a rich chocolate cake that is rich, tasty and just decadent.
Yes, this to me is the greatest Foodgasm of my life. And damnit, I will appreciate it.

WHITE CASTLE!!!

no joke. I'm sure a lot of people from Detroit would agree with me.

-Grape Leaves, Tabouleh, Lebanese Bread
-My Grandpa's sauce & capellini, just the way it was every Sunday of my childhood
-Pork Sandwich from David's Real Pit BBQ in Gainesville, Florida (with slaw, of course)
-Fish & Chips from Cricketers' Arms in Orlando
-My momma's Pistachio Cake
-Red Velvet cake with gads of cream cheese frosting
-Pumpkin Pie with loads of Redi Whip

Dang, I forgot the sweet tea. From McAlister's.

Posted by: Kolby at June 25, 2007 5:14 PM

I LOVE Anna's, and Wild Willy's! I think for me personally it would be a toss up between the eggs benedict from Kellys (on broadway in Somerville, not the Roast Beef joint)with a huugggge glass of chocolate milk and a cup of coffee with extra english muffins.

or

A shitload of crab rangoons from Kowloon.

This is not going to get me home any sooner to have dinner. and i'm already so damn hungry. PLUS, my cooking is not where I wish it could be... sigh...

APPETIZER: peruvian ceviche. raw fish marinated/cooked in lime juice.

SALAD: greek salad with lots and lots of kalamata olives and crumbled aged feta cheese... and probably some grape leaves (even if i did have some for lunch today from rumi in dc...yummmm)

SOUP: Either tom yum soup or pariwella. seafood in some type of red tomato-oniony broth.

MAIN COURSE: back to seafood. probably paella. or pescado a lo macho with rice slices of ripe avocado. again, peruvian style. because peruvian food is soooo good. I also wouldn't mind some pad thai smothered in crushed peanuts.

DESSERT: rice pudding with coconut shavings and cinnamon. or a realllly thick, but milky, milkshake.

GOD. I'm so fucking hungry now.

Posted by: naomi at June 25, 2007 5:20 PM

Wow, as much as I love food, I'm having a hard time picking something. All I know is that my last meal would be accompanied by copious cocktails from the Town Talk Diner, especially the whiskey cocktail Ben makes for me: Maker's Mark, amaretto, cherry liquor, lemonade and something I can't remember. Yum.

Maybe a lovely steak, rare, with my lemony asparagus. And pie.

Posted by: Julia at June 25, 2007 5:30 PM

Appetizer:

I'm pregnant now, so for extra-special fun I'm just going to list what I feel like eating tonight.

- Tuna melt sandwich with cheddar cheese on English muffin.
-3 kosher dill pickles
-2 fried eggs with lots of salt and butter
-Cold shrimp
-Linguini carbonara with asparagus instead of pancetta
-some goddamn lox on a bagel, fuck this listeriosis bullshit
-an undetermined amount of chocolate
-bread pudding
If I ate that tonight I could die happy. To drink I'd adore a gin and tonic, my favorite DC summer drink. It's going to be a long hot summer with nothing flavorful to quench my thirst but lemonade and my attempts at a virgin mojito.

Posted by: wealhtheow at June 25, 2007 5:39 PM

Appetizer: Stuffed grape leaves (dolmas) with a lemony yogurt dipping sauce and a bag of Tostitos tortilla chips with the "hint of lime". I love those fuckers.

Salad: A Caesar salad. A REAL Caesar, with a fresh raw egg and everything.

Dinner: An entire pan of spanakopita. With extra feta and phyllo. Then a side of fresh homemade pasta in a four cheese (fontina, parmesan, gorgonzola and mozzarella) cheese sauce). Screw Dr. Atkins.

Dessert: One whole huckleberry pie.

To drink throughout the meal: One bottle of pinot noir and several mojitos. And a couple glasses of milk with the pie.

As for Top Chef, I predict that Howie's packing his knives on this week's show.

Posted by: Rebecca at June 25, 2007 5:39 PM

first off, I've got Celiacs disease, so that will bear on my choice foodstuffs:

Stuffed-crust pizze:bacon(real american, not that ham they use in canada), hamburger, cheddar and mozz cheese. Bread sticks and garlic olive-oil on the side.

Guinness, followed by a Sailor Jerry Rum and Coke.

Key Lime Pie!

Posted by: the cox at June 25, 2007 5:46 PM

Since calories obviously don't count as you're marching to your death, I'd start with steamed pork buns and Carl crunchies (light salt flavor - sooo good) and some cream breads.

For the main part of the meal, I'd go for my mom's Swedish meatballs and rice with corn on the cob, served alongside a vegan roll and a serving of tako karaage from Sushi Eye.

As for dessert, I'd want a deep fried Snickers bar, some of mom's Watergate salad, various mochi, green tea tempura ice cream from Sushi Eye (it's served with fried tempura battered strawberries and banana pieces - insanely delicious), Ben & Jerry's Wavy Gravy - discontinued,m but I'd make them make me a batch, and finally, black sesame and strawberry Pocky.

Obviously, I'm being executed for the grievous sin of gluttony...

Forgot to add that I'd be washing this all down with gallons of ice cold birch beer - the clear stuff from Stop N' Shop that my grandma always got for us, not that bizzare caramel colored crap that you find west of the Mississippi.

Posted by: pinkcheese at June 25, 2007 5:51 PM

The Cox:

Just FYI, bacon means bacon in Canada, too.

What USians call Canadian bacon is called back bacon or peameal bacon up here. That fleshy hammy stuff you speak of is not nearly as common or popular in these parts as long thin strippy streaky crispy qua normal bacon.

The good news--you can get your last meal here, too, if you commit a capital crime north of the border and are about to be put to death by the state...oh no--wait! never mind. :)

Posted by: Ranylt at June 25, 2007 5:58 PM

Cous Cous mixed with cucumbers and tomato, and a fine balsamic and a little olive oil.
Fresh buffalo mozzarella, a little pepper, baslamic and salt.
2 slices of applewood smoked bacon with one over medium egg and rye toast for desert.

Posted by: yazikus at June 25, 2007 6:07 PM

Oh yum!!!

Appetizer: fresh salsa...lots of cilantro...fresh made nacho chips

Main: chicken fajitas with a side of lobster and BBQ ribs

Drink: ice cold Coor's Light (canadian version as american is v. watered down) and a diet coke (not for the diet reason as almost dead - can't take the sugar in reg. coke anymore)

Dessert: fudge brownie sundae extra chocolate sauce, cheesecake w/ rasp sauce as an encore...

Posted by: Michelle at June 25, 2007 6:13 PM

Appetizer:
Eddamame
Shrimp Tempura Roll
Spider Roll, no avocado

Soup: Lobster Bisque

Salad: Feast From the East Chinese Chicken Salad

Main Course: Mom's Thanksgiving Dressing with Giblet Gravy, Sisters Mac & Cheese, My Sweet Potato Soufflee

Dessert: Strawberry Shortcake

I think I gained 5 pounds just thinking about all that food!

"Because I'm a southern girl at heart, I will have: sweet tea, fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy. Peach cobbler and homemade vanilla ice cream."

This (props to libraryliz), with the addition of collards (with ham hocks) and biscuits.

Posted by: cerwen at June 25, 2007 6:21 PM

My last dinner, and because I can have unlimited amounts of whatever I want, I'm having....

Starter: Dolmades with garlicky tzatziki, paneer mekhani (Indian cottage cheese in a tomato butter) and butter naan from Haweli in Edmonton. A plate of har gau (shrimp dumplings).

Entrée: Medium roast beef, mashed potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, GRAVY, steamed broccoli with Canadian cheddar cheese sauce, perfectly grilled New York strip steak with a big bowl of white rice with Japanese Village's creamy sesame sauce, kai-lan stirfried with garlic and soy sauce, grilled zucchini with parmesan cheese.

Dessert: A GINORMOUS "Oh my God, Caramel" Brownie with vanilla icecream. A strawberry icecream cone. A big slice of my mother's Tin Roof Pie.

Drinks: Red sangria with red grapes and nectarines, Lifeboat tea with skim milk, strawberry lemonade from Red Robin.

And after that, they wouldn't need to execute me, since I'd have exploded!!! Plus they couldn't really anyways, since I live in Canada, and I'd only have gotten Life for whatever I'd done.

Posted by: KatyBelle at June 25, 2007 6:24 PM

King crab legs

Nigiri sashimi
Spicy tuna and dragon rolls

Stir fry with pasta and tofu

A gallon of Bojangles sweet tea (I'm from NC)

and.......a pint of Ben & Jerry's Half Baked

OMG pinkcheese! I thought my mom was the only one who made watergate salad. The easiest "salad" to make in the whole world.

Posted by: katy at June 25, 2007 6:25 PM

Appetizer: grilled shrimp with bacon, garlic and lots of butter

Main Course: BBQ (Montgomery Inn, Cincinnati), Hash Browns with Bacon and Cheese (Waffle House), and a side of a hand-tossed ham and bacon pizza with extra cheese, light on the sauce (Leaning Tower of Pizza, San Diego)

bread: Italian (Dudley's, Santa Ysabel), corn muffins (Calhoun's, Knoxville), biscuits from Bob Evans and Red Lobster

Dessert: my Mom's Bread Pudding and a turtle sundae with extra pecans and sauces, hold the cherry (Michael's Custard, Madison, WI)

Beverage: Canned Pepsi, ice cold and fully loaded with sugar and caffeine

NOTES: Couldn't come up with anyplace to add a serving of Cashew Chicken from Royal's, Japan

I'm seriously into bacon and cheese...

Holy shit, am I really the only Marylander in here? Really?!? Fine, here goes:

Appetizer: Minature (blue) crab cakes (must be made by someone from Maryland, it's not the same in any other state) served with plenty of lemon slices and tartar sauce

First course: Steamed whole blue crabs absolutely CAKED in old bay seasoning with a side of watermelon and fresh corn on the cob.

Second course: Crab imperial with a whole loaf of french bread to eat it on. And maybe a salad on the side, salad is completely optional but preferred.

Drink: Long Island iced teas or a good summer beer, nothing else drinks with blue crab, especially not steamed ones

Dessert: Chocolate cake with a giant scoop of real vanilla ice cream and a milkshake from the home made ice cream place near where I live.

Bonus is that it would take me a couple HOURS to take down that meal (crab is heavy, y'all). I'm going out drunk and spicy.

Posted by: Genny at June 25, 2007 6:40 PM

y'all are making me hungry.
I'd have pasty (mmmmmmm steak and potato pie....), roasted red peppers with mozzarella on fresh bread, chinese dumplings, a whole pot of coffee liberally spiked with whiskey to drink, and tiramisu with strawberries and cognac to finish it off.

Let my island native ass weigh in on this extremely important last-foodstuffs-ever poll right quick:

*plate lunch from the Diner on O'ahu with kahlua pig, pork lau lau, spareribs and chicken katsu. No rice, double macaroni salad.

*saimen from one of the many, many, noodle houses in Waipahu/Aiea, preferably with fish cake, hot peppers and a few won tons.

*fried SPAM with eggs over rice and lots of soyu. you mainlanders have no idea what you're missing, i tell you!

*haupia (firm coconut pudding) and chocolate dobash cake

And, to wash that all down, a six pack of Woodchuck's dark and dry apple cider.

I'm ready. It's on!

Posted by: maylai at June 25, 2007 6:44 PM

almost forgot - deep fired artichoke hearts with ranch dressing as an appetizer. lots and lots of ranch dressing.

Posted by: s. pisaster at June 25, 2007 6:45 PM

I'd have to have some spinach artichoke dip. Not served damned corn chips either. I like pita chips.

Since it's my last meal, I won't be cooking. Therefore, some of my favorite foods won't be allowed because I can't trust others to make them correctly. That makes things tough.

I need some garlic/parmesan mashed potatoes, shrimp cocktail, broccoli cheese casserole, and fried apples. I know these don't really go together, but I'm never one to care.

Some pinot grigio to drink.

Some sort of Oreo Pie or White Cupcakes with White Icing (it's a comfort food from childhood).

Damn, I'm so hungry now.

I'm from Trinidad so I was torn between sushi and Trini food but finally made a decision to eat as I have lived...

Breakfast - 5 or 6 doubles (chick peas in a gooey curry sauce in between 2 fried dough flaps that has since softened) with mango, cucumber and slight pepper. With an Apple J

Lunch - Shark and bake from Richard's on Maracas Beach. This is fried shark fillets sandwiched between fried dough (crispy). Topped with pepper, chadon beni sauce (cilantro), garlic sauce, mango, cucumber and the thousand island dressing thingie. With a Sorrel Shandy.

Dinner - Trinidad stew chicken cooked dark and soft, with the perfect macaroni pie (cheesy and gooey), tons of gravy, fried plantain, coleslaw, red beans, and a bowl of the most perfect callalloo ever (soup made out of what is essentially spinach). Lots of pepper sauce at my disposal.

Dessert - My aunt's cheesecake for old times sake, and a great molten chocolate cake.

Drinks - Just feed me beer. Give me Carib from Trinidad, every type of Abita from New Orleans, and all the flavoured Sea Dogs. Keep it flowing fast and furious.

Mashed Potatoes, made with tons of cream and butter

My great-grandmother's sicilian meat dressing, made with Morningstar Farms veggie crumble instead of ground beef.

Homemade cranberry sauce with ginger

Asparagus sauteed with butter and herbes de provence

Portabello mushrooms sauteed in thai peanut sauce

Cambridge Brewing Company's Heather Ale, Seadog Blueberry Ale, or a Black Forest (Guinness and Lideman's Framboise Lambic)

And for dessert, JP Licks' El Diablo ice cream (chocolate with cinnamon and cayenne pepper) or Herrell's Twinkie ice cream. Or maybe a Fudge-Anna from Cabot's (vanilla ice cream, mellow ripe banana wheels, the best hot fudge ever made, and marshmallow sauce. Mmmmmm.). Maybe all three?

Ok, now I have to go make dinner.

Manny said: "Well, since I'm going to Hell for making fun of retarded kids and being pro choice, let's kick this pig:"

See you there, Manny. I have seats in that section, too.

We'll start with vegetable samosas straight from the street vendors. Nothing from a fancy restaurant, I want the deep-fried, wonderful ones you only get from some hole-in-the-wall place.

Then I want a baked apple stuffed with brie.

I want the chicken and avocado soup from Frontera Tex-Mex.

And I'll have a whole grilled Vidalia onion, as well.

Homemade strawberry shortcake for dessert.

I'll wash it down with the mojitos they make at Cheesecake Factory, and a bottle of Mirassou Chardonnay.

Posted by: Wednesday at June 25, 2007 7:26 PM

We'll open with duck spring rolls and a buffalo burrito (pricey special appetizers I've had here in NYC), accompanied by a Brooklyn Pilsner
Potato leek soup
Some lemon ice and some chilled vodka as a palette cleanser
A thiiiiiiick cut veal chop, spicy sweat potato fries, braised red cabbage and some form of green, served with copious amounts of Stone Imperial Russian Stout, Smoked Porter & Double Bastard Ale
Large piece of goooooey chocolate babka, fruit sorbet (assorted flavors) and a bottle of Old No. 7 Brand, Jack Daniels

Strap me in pickled and light up the sky

Posted by: Brian at June 25, 2007 8:30 PM

I can't believe I missed most of this diversion. I'll just say that since it's incredibly hard to choose between my favorite Italian, favorite seafood, and favorite steak restaurants, I'll just go with

1. as many Skyline Chili Dogs as I can eat (the real thing, with the mustard put on with a wooden stick)

2. Kopparberg pear cider and frozen vodka shots (two of the best things about Finland),

3.a raspberry-almond tart from The Ravioli Shop in Rochester, NY, and

4. my mother's tapioca pudding.

Posted by: Louise at June 25, 2007 8:38 PM

My mother's meatloaf (it's to die for), a mountain of red mashed potatoes heavy on butter and gravy, black olives, deviled eggs, a foot-long mango margarita from La Salsa in Las Vegas(if I'm dying, I'm dying buzzed), a Love It ColdStone Coffee Lover's ice cream with extra heath bar, an espresso martini, and an entire package of TimTams.

It's the one time in my life I don't have to worry about calories, so I'm going all out. I'm gonna sizzle in that chair!

Posted by: Izzie at June 25, 2007 9:16 PM

I'm going with the Holy Trinity of delicious cuisine: Greek/Middle Eastern, Indian...and, well, chocolate is the third. Because I'm a woman.

For the meze (appetizer):

*kalamata olives and pita bread with hoummus, sweet potato skordalia, and my favorite dip from Iran--yoghurt with cucumber and sultanas
*Aush (Aghan soup)

Main course:

*Chana Masala (chick peas), madras lentils, and vegetable curry on a steaming bed of fluffy brown basmati rice
*garlic naan (extra garlic! fuck, i want an entire head roasted, and then i'll breathe in my executioner's face)

Dessert:

*mint chocolate chip ice cream with hot fudge
*a whole bar of the darkest chocolate imaginable

Beverages:

*Maneschewitz wine, concord grape (none of that blackberry crap!)
*fruit smoothie from Jamba Juice or Robeks, preferably passion fruit or pomegranate

Oh, and I almost forgot, for before the meal:

*Four grams of marijuana

Australian minced beef pies, gratin dauphinois, English trifle and two bottles of champagne, and to dine with my husband.

Maylai: Hey! I KNEW a fellow native had to post their last meal. I'm not a huge fan of Hawaiian food but I still like it from time to time. I'm also gonna make a nice combo of sugary items since I'm a diabetic.

App:
Garlic naan, extra garlic
Grilled bread w/ olive oil/balsamic vinegar, risotto balls from North Bondi Italian Food.
Pita w/ hummus and tzatziki
Dolmadakia (stuffed grape leaves)

Main:
Kalua pig, NO CABBAGE.
Gnocchi from Town.
pumpkin soup from The Soup Kitchen in Auckland
Handmade pasta with garlic and oil and TONS of parmesan

Drink:
Iced tea with real sugar, real coke (no more diet for me, I'll have a diabetic seizure before I actually die) and a huge margarita

Dessert:
kulolo (thick taro pudding). I could eat that stuff all day. and a bowl of poi WITH sugar, thanks.
Ice cream, and more ice cream. cookie dough or plain chocolate.
French toast w/ loooots of maple syrup, vanilla ice cream and strawberries.
Crepes filled with Nutella, with more ice cream
Chocolate-Hazelnut gelato from that place next to the Sydney Opera House.

And I'll have died before they nuked my brains out. Ta da!

My Mum's roast chicken with honey roasted pumpking, potato, sweet potato and parsnip. Plus carrots and grean beans.

Followed by a massive helping of chocolate and hazelnut browning with enough chocolate sauce to drown in.

Accompanied by a bottle of Fifth Leg Merlot and maybe some cheese biscuits if I have time.

Now that's a good way to go.

Posted by: Camilla at June 25, 2007 11:13 PM

Okay, I'll bite (so to speak...)

What's "Watergate" salad?

Never heard of that one.

Where's all the Chicagoans? No love for real hot dogs?

Make mine Portillo's. Let's live (okay, die) extravagantly and throw in a Maxwell Street Polish (Sausage) as well. Some mac 'n cheese (don't mix the cheese powder in too good, keep it powdery and 'I gotta eat in the next 2 minutes!' style).

To hell with the fruits and vegetables (here you go, Manny, you can have mine!). 6-12 KFC biscuits.

A gallon or so of el cheapo. Anyone spending more than $8 on a jug of whatever-flavor-of-Rossi-is-on-sale-this-week is getting ripped off....

Throw in some chocolate cake, ice cream of some sort (by the time I'm seeing the bottom of the first jug, I ain't gonna CARE where the sweets came from).

Hit the switch and it's all gonna be Baked Alaska Flambe.

Posted by: bjs1109 at June 25, 2007 11:47 PM

Doner Kebap sandwich with cheese. The kind you can buy in any tiny little shop all over Europe. With extra red sauce.

One carnitas taco. No tomato, thanks.

Steamed broccoli with a little bit of sharp cheddar and plenty of salt.

Some form of potato. Other than hating scalloped potatoes, I'm really not picky here. Bravas would be nice, so would curly fries. Yum.

Fresh pineapple and peaches.

Brazilian cheese cake with dulce de leche from this little shop in town. Jesus.

Sangria and Manzanilla (the wine, not the tea). Manzanilla invariably makes me sing, and I want to go out singing.

Posted by: Lauren at June 26, 2007 12:38 AM

mmmm....so hungry now!
My dinner would be: Perfect cut of steak, very rare with demiglasse on it. Asparagus and baby potatos. Appetizer would be she crab soup. (btw Rachel try the she crab at Keegans: believe it or not it's FANTASTIC!)
Bread with truffle butter. YUM!
Desert would be my moms homemade chocolate mearangue pie. Home made pudding that is the most rocking in the world!!!!
As for drinks - half and halfs. Guiness and Harp and keep em coming. They would def. have to use a wheelbarrow or something to get me to the chair!!!

Posted by: trixie at June 26, 2007 12:40 AM

ughh, I was so excited to see a food post and I love me some Gordon Ramsey. Unfortunately, I am about 3 months pregnant and I almost got sick just reading these... :( Too many KFC and gravy references for me to handle I am afraid. I guess I will eat saltines or bread and butter...
The me from 6months ago would have had a many coursed smorg full of cheeses and garlicky, crispy goodness with lots of wine and finished with espresso and creme brulee...

Posted by: Cookie at June 26, 2007 1:00 AM

Well, being from Australia, I'd have to go for a giant slab of dead cow, probably. Medium rare Hell, make it a surf and turf so chuck prawns on top and cover it in creamy garlic sauce. Served with chips (none of this 'fries' business) and...well, to be multicultural, a huge plate of wilted bok-choy with garlic...mmm...

Dessert? something involving lots of chocolate and cream...and maybe raspberries.

Beverage: Seeing as it's steak I guess a nice Barossa Shiraz...the expensive stuff...or just loads of coke.

Posted by: rach at June 26, 2007 1:15 AM

Let's see.... roasted leg of lamb with rosemary and garlic (natch) served with seriously fluffy-on-the-inside-crunchy-good-on-the-outside roast potatoes, shredded savoy cabbage cooked with a whole load of butter, some lightly fried spinach and Yorkshire puddings cooked in so much oil they're practically deep fried.

All served with lashings of thick and rich red wine gravy.

If I'm allowed additional courses: Peking steamed dumplings to start and hot apple crumble with vanilla icecream for desert.

Oh and to drink some seriously nice French red. Or a glass of fresh peach juice the way they make it in one particular jungle cafe in Bolivia - seriously I've never tasted anything like it.

Actually screw last meal - I'm having that tonight.

Posted by: Alex the Odd at June 26, 2007 4:40 AM

Oh man. Can i just say i live for my evening meals. There's nothing like the comfort of good food when you're hungry, feel like it or just damn near want to eat something.

Meal- Steak (well done by Angus steakhouse or Harvester) with them fat, a little bit oily chips with salad in vinegar dressing with big fat juicy prawns. Man...I'm drolling at my desk.

Dessert- Haagen Das Bailey Ice Cream. I know I won't be allowed alchohol so I'll damn near go drank on ice cream.

Mate i've got three hours to go before lunch...

Posted by: Jean at June 26, 2007 5:41 AM

There's a pub here on the Kent coast - a proper British old-school pub, a dying breed - that does the greatest cheeseburger and chips on the planet, so I'll have that. With a side order of scampi.

Tiramisu for desert.

A slice of French Fry pizza with Tabasco from Chatham Pizza in New Jersey

Crab and Garlic Noodles from Thanh Long in San Francisco

Peking Duck with sweet garlic sauce from Peking Gourmet in Falls Church, VA

Cold steamed peas

bjs1109 - Watergate salad (at least the way my mom makes it) has mixed fruit cocktail (no cherries), miniature marshmallows, loads of whipped cream, and I think pistashio pudding mix and mixed together. I'm not to clear on it, since I've never made it myself, but it's the ultimate summer picnic dessert of my childhood.

Posted by: pinkcheese at June 26, 2007 11:14 AM

"Where's all the Chicagoans? No love for real hot dogs?"

Hee! I'm more of a Lou Malnati's pizza person myself.

I can't even come up with anything for this, as I am a huge food freak and could not imagine narrowing my choices down to 3 things, but I will say it would involve pizza and pretty much any kind of Italian food, all the damn sushi I could stuff into my mouth, disgusting amounts of Steak n Shake, and mountains of chocolate. Oh, and Newcastle beer, too. And Orangina! Ohhh, and cookies.

Shutting up now.

I'm awfully surprised at all of the respondees that can actually pick a meal. Here's the thing: just like what I wear everyday, the meals I choose are planned according to what I'm in the mood for. Therefore, I really couldn't choose an all-time last meal menu, because when the time comes- who knows? I'd probably have a sudden urge for cheap greasy pizza, instead of the filet mignon that I would have originally guessed. It is entirely, and extremely subjective to mood. Am I seriously the only one like that...?!

Oh, with Gordon at the top, I am going to have to say a repeat of the best meal I had in my life- at Claridge's with Gordon in the kitchen! Broadbean risotto, Beef Wellington, Apple torte with cinnamon ice cream. Plus about a million baby courses in between.

LOVE YOU GORDON! NO ONE COOKS LIKE YOU! XO

Posted by: Lucky bitch at June 26, 2007 11:55 AM

I'm late on this, but I had to respond to this one. I'm not picky about specifics... more like an omikase prepared by my favorite chefs and using my favorite ingredients:

amuse: roasted dates wrapped in bacon, maybe marinated in vanilla and blood orange?
App: containing fois gras and prepared by Chef Wylie Dufresne
Entree: Kobe beef, rare-medium rare, prepared by Chef Tom Colicchio
Dessert: prepared by Gordon Ramsey

and...
a glass of aged single malt scotch, neat.

that'll do just fine, I think.

Posted by: Jayne at June 26, 2007 12:58 PM

To start:
- Crab Rangoons from Sahla Thai in St. Catharines ON (if nothing else was possible, I'd just eat these continuously)
- 4-cheese spinach dip from Kelseys
- shrimp cocktail

Then:
A huge BBQ with everything it entails- homemade cheeseburgers, grilled chicken, steak, potato salad, buttery corn on the cob, and more potato salad. Intersperse all those items with Sour Cream & Onion Pringles with Helluva Good French Onion Dip.

Dessert:
-Chocolate Caramel Cheesecake
-a pint of Ben & Jerry's Half Baked

Snack (what? you have a problem with that?)
-Pizza & Wings -covered in blue cheese dressing

To drink:
- alternating between Diet Coke with Lime, strawberry daquaris from The Flying Saucer in Niagara Falls and old style Loganberry juice from the Crystal Beach amusement park

Yup. That oughta do it.

Posted by: k at June 26, 2007 1:28 PM

Hahahaha, k, you did NOT just pick something from the Saucer! I'm from the Falls myself... since when do they serve anything other than the 99-cent breakfast?! ;)

Posted by: b at June 26, 2007 1:37 PM

An omakase dinner from Masa. A bottle of vintage Krug Rose for an aperitif, then a bottle of Petrus with the meal. Finish with a bowl of ice-cold sour cherries, blueberries and nectarines. And yes, whomever decides to execute me will go broke first.

An In & Out Double-Double with Cheese -- oh yeah, and my wife.

Posted by: Chez at June 26, 2007 1:57 PM

roasted beet and goat cheese terrine, chicken burrito from Agua Linda (Athens, GA), my mom's spaghetti and meatballs, flourless chocolate cake, George Dickel whiskey and Blennheim ginger ale with lemon, and a 6-pack of Terrapin Rye Ale.

"An In & Out Double-Double with Cheese -- oh yeah, and my wife."

I have no Pajiba authority (obviously), but I think this comment wins. Hands down.

And as for someone who said that the food you eat depends on your mood--I'm the same way, but I could almost never turn down Italian food and chocolate. Or ice cream. Or dragon rolls. Mmmmm.

Posted by: em at June 26, 2007 2:39 PM

Stephanie! Does this really exist(?): A slice of French Fry pizza with Tabasco from Chatham Pizza in New Jersey. Seriously? Are the fries the topping or the crust, or both?

And I thought a deep-fried Twinkie was the ultimate catalytic agent for sending me into a diabetic coma. The only possible way to top that gastronomic fea[s]t would be to create a corndog pizza. We'll probably see that next year at the Texas State Fair!

and I am the very happy wife of Chez...

thank you, baby. :)

Posted by: Jayne at June 26, 2007 2:58 PM

Yet another Southern girl here! I'm pretty sure I could never actually eat all this, but my meal would go as follows:

Fried chicken
Salt & pepper catfish
cornbread AND biscuits
Mashed potatoes and gravy
Collards
Cabbage and bacon
Apple pie w/ vanilla ice cream
Sweet tea and lemonade to drink

That's it, I'm ready for the chair!

Posted by: Claire at June 26, 2007 4:24 PM

Oh boy, I have no idea what I would really decide, but it's summer, so for now let's go with lots of grilled stuff:

appetizer: grilled asparagus drizzled lightly with olive oil, salt and freshly ground pepper and
grilled corn on the cob slathered with butter

main course: grilled four cheese pizza: mozzarella, asiago and parmesan cheeses along with a little bit of a good quality bleu cheese and some roasted red peppers or sundried tomatoes on top. (if you've never had grilled pizza, you should. it's fabulously delicious)
The big decision here is whether I would stick to my vegetarianess or since it's my last meal, go out with some bbq chicken...too close to call, for now let's just stick with the pizza and some homemade Mac n' Cheese

beverage: a quality ginger brew like Reed's

Dessert: French Toast from Victory's Banner and a slice of lemon meringue pie (or peach cobbler? I can't decide!)

Posted by: leah at June 26, 2007 5:39 PM

A greco donair with no onions and extra sauce. Mint fudge chip Baxter ice cream.

Failing that, a big plate of traditional roast beef and yorkshire pudding, followed by a bowl of hot apple crisp and ice milk.

Posted by: Heather at June 26, 2007 9:30 PM

Shit, guys.

There's so many things I'd love to fucking eat, but I don't think I'd be able to hold anything down.

Most of that food sounds amazing, though.

Posted by: Dita at June 27, 2007 12:57 PM

I would eat a newborn baby. A plump one with dimples.

Mmmm. Baby with BBQ sauce.

Posted by: David! at June 27, 2007 2:32 PM

That's easy, I've always had just one favorite meal. Willow's chicken pot pie with no vegetables, white rice(covered in the pie sauce), egg noodles(also covered in the pie sauce), a baked potato with cheese and bacon bits, and corn bread. And I wash it down with a big glass of milk. And for desert it would have to be a big bowl of my favorite ice cream, Batter Up from Newport Creamery: peanut butter ice cream with caramel swirls and chocolate covered peanuts.

Posted by: Moose at June 27, 2007 3:46 PM

A thick, juicy cut of steak, cooked medium-rare, with a side of A1 (fuck it, last meal, etc.). Roasted red potatoes. Giant Cobb salad (no avocado, no egg) with extra bleu cheese. Big glass of Coke with lots of ice. For dessert: Stroh's mint chocolate chip ice cream in a waffle cone. Alternately, Purple Haze bong rips.

"Oh, and I almost forgot:

*For before the meal, 4 grams of marijuana."

Outstanding, Diana! I had a very similar thought. Sort of like an amuse bouche, no? You also may have come up with the solution for all these posters who claim they're going to explode before they ever reach the chair - smoke four grams of weed and not only will you actually be able to eat all that food, you'll never notice when your stomach implodes.

My last meal (mostly mom-prepared dishes):

Mom's caesar salad - with raw egg, huge shards of salty Romano cheese and lots of cracked black pepper.

Mom's spaghetti amatriciana - a light, salty/sweet tomato-based sauce with sauteed onions and hunks of bacon.

A medium-rare slab of prime rib with garlic mashed potatoes, fried onion bits and sauteed spinach.

My mom's apple pie - super flaky salty and sweet crust with real sliced apples, none of that canned pie filling crap.

All of that then washed down with one or two (or seven) Kir Royales. Deelish!

This is really hard! I didn't realize how much food I enjoyed in this capacity. But since I'm hungry I'm going with what makes my mouth water now.

A chicken pot pie with only white gristle-free meat. A big salad covered with white meat chicken tenders, cheese, tomatoes, Ranch dressing, avocado and burnt bacon. French bread smothered in chilled butter. Iced tea. And an apple crisp covered in caramel and vanilla ice cream.

Yep. That sounds perfect.

I have no idea where this combination of food came from, but it's been my favorite for as long as I can remember. Try it, you might like it!
Barbequed Pork Chops (like 1 1/2" thick)
Mashed Potatoes
Creamed Corm (must be homemade - not from a can), served ON TOP of the potatoes
Mojitos abondonza for drinks
Graeters Buckeye Blitz ice cream (chocolate ice cream with peanut butter cookie dough and chocolate chunks. Graeters is a local Cincinnati brand, with more butterfat than you should eat in an entire year) with hot fudge sauce.

Posted by: Monkeyboy at June 28, 2007 12:15 PM

Oh man, the only thing I like more than eating is thinking about and salivating over food.

To begin: Tostadas with jamon Serrano and manchego cheese; queso fresco and lox; sweet brie and quince paste. Add some shrimp ceviche and I could die a happy woman.

And then, in rapid and delicious succession: spinach lightly sautéed with lots and lots of garlic, tender juicy stewed beef with a tomato/cumin/garlic/etc., and a proper caesar salad with big shavings of parmesan and anchovies.

For dessert: The molten chocolate soufflé with coffee ice cream from The Farm in Portland. My old housemate Kayu's homemade scones with blackberry jam. And, since I'm already a dead woman, cheese cake with fresh strawberries.

To drink: Rioja red wine, seltzer with limes and cucumbers in it, and stumptown coffee with dessert.

Good lord, I'm hungry. And since this is cyber fantasy land and none of yall southerners can come after me with torch and pitchfork, I'd like to add that I think both biscuits and gravy (and _especially_ biscuits WITH gravy) are freakish and disgusting and should be banned as toxic. Just saying.

Posted by: leah at June 29, 2007 4:27 AM

Fresh pineapple, watermelon, oranges
My Mother's egg fried rice
A side of mashed potatoes
Sauteed spinach with garlic
Cream of broccoli soup
Caprese Salad
Fresh brioche and provolone
Chocolate Pudding

MmmMMmm.
I think I need to take a trip to the kitchen right now.

I judge your lack of inspiration...
Behold my judgement!
Have a baby already and lose your cool, or is this what has already happened?!

I would just want pretty much everything on the Desert menu from Enoteca Cucina here in Adelaide, Australia (we have a nice little le Cordon Bleu school here and we have more restaurants per capita than any other city in the world!)

My last desert there consisted of lavender pannacotta with a shortbread and oven roasted rhubarb and a raspberry sauce.

For a main - pretty much any fresh SA seafood dish from Sammys on the Marina. Or if I'm feeling like a pasta then entree serve of of Spirali Mondiali (chicken in a special rosa sauce) from Cafe Mondiali. I have known only one person to actually eat a whole main serve of pasta from Mondi's as they are huge.

Posted by: Nikki at June 30, 2007 8:16 AM

Arby's Beef 'n Cheddar, Taco Bell 7-Layer Burrito, cheesecake, repeat until comatose.
If lubrication is needed, Dr. Pepper or Hi-C Pink Lemonade.

If I need a few last brownie points, I would also want my mother in law's Burnt, Sandy Artichoke hearts that are so wooden, that most people abandon all hope after but a petal.

Oh, where to start...

Salad. Mixed greens/spring mix with lots whole leaf spinach. Sesame ginger dressing and an Alaskan Salmon fillet shredded in. Top it off with a glass (or two) of Chenin Blanc.

Main course, would have several parts. It's my last meal... so no holding back.

Steak, a Rib eye or New York strip, cooked medium, pink but warm, peppery seasoning, but not so much to take away from the flavor of the steak. No sauce.

Grilled shrimp, maybe lemon pepper. No breading. On skewers.

Grilled chicken, again some spice, but not so much to take away from the natural flavor. Maybe a good glaze, orange spice, teriyaki, or other Asian type flavor.

Vegetable medley, broccoli, squash, zucchini, cauliflower, carrots, etc. Mix it up with some long grain rice, or whole grain pasta, rottini would work. Maybe both, who's counting carbs at this point.

I've been drinking, so my mind is cluttered a bit, but to drink, a solid beer, like a Sam Adams or Fat Tire, but better microbrew I can think of later. Several of them. Probably a shot of my friend Jack Daniels in there somewhere.

Desert. Only one thing comes to mind. Mom's homemade brownies. Brownies, frosting, everything from scratch. Melt in your moth. Ummmmmmm.

Afterward, a healthy serving of 12 year old (or older) scotch, Walker Blue, or something else I couldn't afford. A good cigar, maybe a Trilogy Exotic Maduro or a Gurkha.

If I could get blowed after, that would be great, but I don't think that counts as part of the last meal...
