All of This Has Happened Before and Will Pajiba Again

The Daily Trade Round-Up / The TV Whore
April 16, 2008

Hell yes! Fox has signed Tricia Helfer to a one-year deal, which means she’ll likely get a pilot for herself sometime in the next year. With “Battlestar Galactica” soon to leave us forever, I’ll take some more Number Six any which way I can get her. That’s one toaster I’d let crisp my bagel, if you know what I’m saying. Here’s hoping she gets a pilot that actually makes it to air, unlike her last pilot, 2007’s “Them.”

And in possibly related news, Helfer’s current boss, Ron Moore, just got a two-hour backdoor pilot from Fox. “Virtuality,” a script Moore wrote with another “BSG” writer/producer, is about a crew of spacemen on a 10-year mission to explore the universe, and they use their ship’s high-tech virtual reality technology to get away from the boredom of spending 10 years on a spaceship (i.e., a holodeck, which Moore is quite familiar with, having worked on “Star Trek: The Next Generation”). I can’t say this sounds terribly interesting, I was also entirely uninterested in “Battlestar Galactica” and Moore’s wonderful job there has earned him the benefit of the doubt. Plus, if he were to cast Helfer, well, you know who has two thumbs and wouldn’t complain? This guy.

And in equally exciting, if less sexy (to my own tastes, at least) casting news, Albert Brooks is joining “Weeds,” which returns on June 16 (!). Brooks will be playing Mr. Botwin, Nancy’s father-in-law, for a few episodes. And while there’s not much word yet on what his storyline will be, I don’t care. Even though his recent work has left a little to be desired, Al will forever hold a special place in my heart because of Defending Your Life and his turn as Hank Scorpio on “The Simpsons,” among other wonderful things.

In other pilot news, HBO’s “1%” has added Donal Logue, W. Earl Brown (our boy Dan Dority from “Deadwood”) and Marisa Ryan (no idea who she is, though IMDb says she was on “Major Dad” among other things). This is the show about an Arizona motorcycle club, and Logue has been tapped to play the leader of the gang. Interesting choice, and something a bit different from his usual comedy schtick, so we’ll have to wait and see how this show shakes out.

Meanwhile, CBS has pulled Marcia Gay Harden into its terrible-sounding pilot for “The Tower,” which is about Chicago reporters who try to investigate and solve breaking news crime cases or some shit. Some shit indeed. CBS is also go-going Power Rangers, as Amy Jo Johnson has been added to “Flashpoint,” a police drama that already has a 13 episode order. Johnson will be playing a former Canadian mountie, eh. I’ve always had a little thing for Amy Jo (though she’s no Tricia, of course), and with Enrico Colantoni already in the show as well, I may have to check it out despite the fact that it’s yet. another. police. drama.

So hey — did anyone watch “Secret Talents of the Stars” last week? I didn’t, and all I know about it is that George Takei sang some country tune and, apparently, it weren’t so good. Well, actually, I know two things. I know that, and I know that CBS has already yanked the show after a lone airing. It was replaced by “48 Hours Mystery” last night, and will be again next week. Coincidentally, it took well less than 48 hours for CBS to cancel “Secret Talents,” and there was no mystery behind that decision at all. (See what I did right there? That’s why I’m a professional, bitches!) After next week, “Shark” will take over that Tuesday at 10 p.m. timeslot.

And speaking of short-lived reality shows, CBS has announced a new reality show from Mark Burnett that will be airing this summer. The eight episode run of “Jingles” is slated to premiere on Sunday, July 27, at 9 p.m. I consulted my oddsmaker friend in Vegas and he said the show is getting +250 that it will actually air at all (meaning you win $250 on a $100 bet), and the over/under of episodes to air is 2. Why is my hypothetical bookie so down on “Jingles” you ask? Because it’s a competition show where, I fucking kid you not, people will be creating jingles. Commercial jingles, TV show jingles — you name it, they’ll jingle it! Mother. Fucking. Jingles. When I told Dustin about this yesterday, his response was a succinct “guh.” Guh indeed.

In better CBS/Burnett news, the next season of “Survivor” will finally make the jump to HD. Shows like “Survivor” and “The Amazing Race” have avoided the HD so far because the cameras are bigger and bit more unwieldy, which is a particular concern in active reality shows like these, where the cameramen have to run all over the place lugging their electronic eyes. So I feel a little bad for the camera guys. But whatever — it’ll be nice to see the next season’s beautiful local in high def, even though I’m a little scared to think about how the HD might treat unshowered and unkempt contestants.

Lastly, those of us back on board with “Lost” this season will be happy to learn that we’re going to get an extra hour in May, meaning we’ll have only lost two episodes this season because of the strike. However, while this means we’ll be getting a three-hour finale, there will be a fucking two week gap in the middle. The first hour will air on May 15, and the last two will run two weeks later on May 29. The gap is because the producers refused to break apart the last two hours, and May 22, the Thursday in between, was already slated for the “Ugly Betty” finale followed by the “Grey’s Anatomy” finale. And now, with no “Lost” on the 22nd, ABC has also given “Grey’s” an extra hour, so its May 22 finale will be two hours of frustratingly banal bullshit, instead of just the one.

And speaking of “Lost,” I leave you with … what?

Actually, we’re not done yet. Gonna step out of the TV and into the movies for just a quick second. Late last night, as I was putting this column to bed, I stumbled upon the trailer for The Wackness, Audience Award winner at Sundance (and my favorite flick I saw there, as well). I’m excited to now know this flick comes out in July, because I really can’t wait to see it again. But I’m disappointed as all hell at this first trailer, which I’m hesitant to even post, lest it taint your first impression of the flick. So just keep in mind that I’m promising you that this trailer does not represent the goodness that this movie actually is. Shocking, that a trailer might drop the ball, right? I know.

Seth Freilich is Pajiba’s television editor. He is still reeling — reeling — from the pain that was goddamn Mariah Carey night on “American Idol” last night. In fact, he’d like to talk to any neurosurgeons in the Los Angeles area that might be able to make a lobotomy house call this afternoon.

What?

Posted by: CreepyGroovy at April 16, 2008 8:31 AM

I was just saying last night that I believe Tricia Helfer is the most beautiful woman I've seen on television. I believe her completely as a Cylon because I'm still not convinced that there's a real person who looks like that. I'll probably watch a new show if she's on it, but I don't know how she'll top her performance as Six.

And I don't really care about anything else in the round up. Carry on.

Posted by: Genny (also Rusty) at April 16, 2008 8:38 AM

...and to think they could have broken the world record if only they had said what 3 more times.

Posted by: Bosco_the_migh at April 16, 2008 8:42 AM

OK...the TV news is luke warm at best but SETH!!!...the Eagles' schedule came out!! It looks good, minus the coast-to-coast bullshit of playing the NFC West.

Posted by: PissBoy at April 16, 2008 8:59 AM

Seth, I know that you are Phillies fan and I wanted to ask you something. Did you happen to see Stephen Colbert getting "help" from the Phanatic last night?

Posted by: Melody at April 16, 2008 9:18 AM

PissBoy - my thoughts exactly about the schedule. We'll never have an easy schedule because of the NFC East, but this was about as good as we could hope for (and I'm not whining about the coast-to-coast business because it could be worse - at least we don't have to go to fucking England). I'm predicting 10-6, which assumes a split on our 6 NFC East games. But damn it, we better get some value for Sheppard if we trade him, and we better have a smart draft.

Melody - you're damn straight I've been watching Colbert in Philly. Good stuff all around and, yes, the Phanatic's appearance made me titter.

Posted by: Seth at April 16, 2008 9:25 AM

Sorry, I just can no longer resist pointing out that not all Pajibans are in awe of everything BSG-related. I'm totally cool with sci-fi, but that show has never really worked for me (and I've seen it dozens of times, so this is an informed viewpoint). The storylines often seem half-baked and the acting is frequently unimpressive. And Tricia Helfer is certainly not bad looking, but I don't think she's wildly gorgeous, either.

Just one guy's opinion.

Posted by: Todd at April 16, 2008 9:30 AM

Let me second the defense of The Wackness, which was one of the best films at Sundance. There is so much good in that movie, and so precious little in that trailer.

Contrary to conventional wisdom, they don't always put all of, or even some of, the good stuff in the trailer.

All the rest: Bwuh, except the "Lost" news. I still really like that show.

Posted by: socalledonlycousins at April 16, 2008 9:39 AM

I'm with socalled - I can't wait for Lost to come back next week. I'm a little pissed that it's moving to 10pm after the no longer even remotely entertaining Grey's Anatomy. ABC sucks.

Posted by: Kolby at April 16, 2008 9:49 AM

The Wackness was good? Really?? With Josh Peck from Drake and Josh? He always seemed like a bit of an idiot on that show...

Posted by: mswas at April 16, 2008 9:49 AM

Maybe it's me but I wish Six and Roslin would just kill each other and I'd be rid of them. 1st season I got deathly sick of her, 2nd they at least gave the actor more than one note to play (3rd, well, almost everybody was unpleasant) but now she's bein mean to Dean Stockwell.

Come on, stop being a bully! Speaking of which, that I'm kinda smiling/I'm kinda sobbing face that Mary McDonnell makes just irritates the shit out of me. It's probably just how her face works, but it always looks so "ohhhh pity poor me, I'll try to bravely get along somehow" just as she's been awful or condescending to somebody in the passive aggressive Roslin mode. Straight up aggressive Roslin is with her glasses. But awful all the time. GODDAMN I HATE LAURA ROSLIN!!!!! (the Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf action was kinda fun though)

Plus, publicity like the above photo was what was used to push the show and thus kept me away. "Wow...blondes in space...yeah, that's a really interesting update". She just doesn't hold a candle to my Navy women. No offense to Ms. Helfer, I'm sure she's a very nice, interesting person to know, I just have no strong feelings to give her. Granted, she *is* attractive in brassy Six mode and Tricia knows how to work that attitude and I'm certainly not immune. Hey, I ain't made of stone! I know I can be messed with. But after five or six episodes I'm screamin "will you stop fucking breathing every goddamn word, get off my lap and stop tryin to fuck with my head already?!?"

(Hey, hey, I didn't say I'm a prize, Freilich. No comparison implied, calm down)

"guh" inDEED. Yikes.

Ben Kingsley IS Jackie Martling is strangely appealing. I'll take your word on the recommendation and skip the trailer. The Olsen makes me a little nervous but we'll cross that bridge later. Maybe Kingsley could pair up with Gazzara and be a weird-ass casting superteam! You know it'd be good.

Posted by: Jay at April 16, 2008 9:52 AM

She is so beautiful!I love her.Maybe many men like her, too. If you want to know her more, you would go to "SeekingRich.com"
.She is also on "SeekingRich.com",there are a lot of reports about her.You can contact her on that website.

Posted by: Bob at April 16, 2008 9:55 AM

I hate that I have to wait till June 3rd for Weeds Season 3 on DVD!!!! I haven't heard much about it - was season 3 as good as the first two?

Posted by: SCG at April 16, 2008 10:24 AM

Wow, Tricia Helfer is on the spambot's site? That's it, where do I sign up?

Posted by: Rob at April 16, 2008 10:25 AM

I kind of love how the spambot is just another Pajiban now.

Posted by: Kolby at April 16, 2008 10:29 AM

Heard that? She's both on SuckingDick.com AND on SuckingDick.com!

Posted by: CasKo at April 16, 2008 10:40 AM

Well I'm sure there's no need for that kind of language!

Posted by: Jay at April 16, 2008 10:45 AM

No offence to Ms. Helfer...

Posted by: CasKo at April 16, 2008 10:47 AM

I keep my worst material for Pajiba, apparently. :S

Posted by: CasKo at April 16, 2008 10:50 AM

I'm seeing The Wackness, crappy trailer or not. It's got Famke Janssen hotness in it. That's all I need to know.

Posted by: Gabs at April 16, 2008 11:03 AM

I kind of love how the spambot is just another Pajiban now.

It kind of takes the stress out of trying to compete with the Pajibian High-Scorers.

Posted by: twig at April 16, 2008 11:06 AM

I'm a convert to BSG, and you know what they say about converts. I was wrong initially (I blame my brother's fascination with the original incarnation of the show), and now I've seen the light.

But a show about the stinkin' holodeck? That the was the lamest, most pointless, diversionary plot device ever. I had my gripes about Star Trek before it showed up, but good gravy, the show got stupider and stupider at that point.

They had the whole damn universe to explore, and they'd rather spend time in a glorified video game.

Posted by: Wednesday at April 16, 2008 11:07 AM

The spambot is my new favorite Pajiban.

Posted by: jamiepants at April 16, 2008 11:20 AM

Awww...it's our special spambot.

So let's see...more crappy reality shows...more police dramas...if it weren't for Lost and Weeds, this would've been a disappointing news morning. And the way you guys have gushed about The Wackness makes me really want to see it. Unfortunately, can't view trailer at work (damn open cubicle).

I should check out BSG one of these days, especially now that it's almost over and I can watch from beginning to end without having to wait for the next installment. The lazy, conservative watcher wins again! HAH, to all you dedicated viewers!!!

Posted by: Shadows of Dakaron at April 16, 2008 11:22 AM

I want the spambot to win a dvd at the end of the week...

Posted by: Shadows of Dakaron at April 16, 2008 11:24 AM

Stab me if you must, but the closest thing I've come to seeing "BSG" is looking at Tricia Helfer naked in Playboy.

Enough with the goddam Celebrity reality shows already. VH1 had a commercial this morning about a Celebrity Magician show and as I guffawed, a hot stream of vomit spewed forth.

Posted by: Skittimus Maximus at April 16, 2008 11:28 AM

I've always imagined the SpamBot as a slightly tipsy robot made outta processed meats. Like the robot from Buck Rogers but... well, meatier. And drunker.

Posted by: Skittimus Maximus at April 16, 2008 11:35 AM

we better get some value for Sheppard if we trade him

Are we trading him??!! I haven't been paying attention to the off season news, I've been too excited about the Phillies being back (and what a marvelous ending to that game last night).

Colbert in Philly has been making my week (Ah Ben Franklin impersonator, I'll never forget the time I heard you say fuck). I forgot to watch last night's, but god damn if the Phanatic was on I'll be glued to my tv tonight during the rerun.

Posted by: Julie at April 16, 2008 11:38 AM

SCG - I loved the third season of Weeds, but I'm kind of iffy on the fourth season. I'm really not sure where they'll go with it, I'll be watching though.

Posted by: IamKateness at April 16, 2008 11:40 AM

I was kind of meh about Weeds season 3...I much preferred two, it was funnier and I didn't dislike Nancy so much.

Posted by: Julie at April 16, 2008 11:47 AM

We're trading Sheppard?!?! I've been a bit caught up in some weird family shit and haven't been following the Birds for a few weeks. Does this have something to do with Samuel? And goddamn right we'd better have a smart draft. *drills eyes at Andy Reid* I'm optimistic about the schedule. Let's face it, McNabb's in until his next injury, so they'd better make the most of it.

Remind me to tell you about the time I saw Ben Franklin get into his Subaru Outback on 7th Street and drive off.

Other than the Lost news, I don't give a shit about the rest of the TV stuff today. Ugly Betty? Meh. Grey's? Lost me halfway through S3. Torchwood finale this week!

Posted by: Nicole at April 16, 2008 11:59 AM

Ha! Nicole, I was walking down Walnut Street a few years ago behind "Ben Franklin" when he tripped on an exposed tree root and yelled "Fuck me!"

My favorite random Philly moment EVER.

The schedule looks pretty good (we're playing the Cards on Thanksgiving?! SWEET), I'm...optimistic as well. Only because I think McNabb is well aware that if he injures himself again he'll have my wrath to contend with.

Posted by: Julie at April 16, 2008 12:08 PM

I don't think the Lito trade is a done deal yet, but rumors started after we picked up Samuel. We'll have to wait and see what happens.

Posted by: thejodester at April 16, 2008 12:14 PM

Sigh...there's nothing I can do about Lito, so I refuse to worry about it.

VH1 had a commercial this morning about a Celebrity Magician show

GOD. When will the apocalypse come and take me away from this terrible place. Who greenlights these shows?!

Posted by: Julie at April 16, 2008 12:19 PM

Celebrity Magicians I WILL watch. Oh you betcha.

I want Twiki back in my life! Mel Blanc being dead shouldn't stop that from happening. And why has there not been as good a villain as Tigerman in all this time?

And Skit, whether or not you prefer her, Tricia is the tip of the whole lotta woman on that show. Again, I prefer the ones in flight suits and deck crew coveralls (Kara, you're nuttier than a Stuckey's log and I love you) but all kinds of ogling are available.

Mind you, it's got a lot more to offer with interesting stories, contemporary analogues, etc. But it does offer that. Jaime Bamber's on hand too for anyone reading who wants a little beefcake now and then too.

Hey, I'm just sayin. Like John Barrowman he is, to borrow from my mom, a nice looking man.

Posted by: Jay at April 16, 2008 12:33 PM

Tricia is the tip of the whole lotta woman on that show.

Jay, so true. And though Ms. Helfer is almost blindingly modely gorgeous, I'm more of a Katee Sackhoff fan. In the non-sexual crush sort of way of course, though if she wanted to make-out Roslin herself would have to stuff me in the airlock to stop me.

Posted by: Julie at April 16, 2008 12:38 PM

What happened to "Secret Talents of the Stars" is what should have happened to 90% of all reality shows on TV.

Still... how many people do you think are going to read this article and immediatly youtube that George Takei video? I know I did :)

Posted by: Mike at April 16, 2008 12:43 PM

The Olsen makes me a little nervous but we'll cross that bridge later.

She's not in the film enough to make a difference, and she plays the same hippie-dippie character she played on "Weeds," which she's actually pretty okay at. Josh Peck, Olivia Thirlby (Juno's buddy), and Ben Kingsley really make the film work. Olsen is on-screen maybe five minutes total.

Posted by: socalledonlycousins at April 16, 2008 12:46 PM

Posted by: Shadows of Dakaron at April 16, 2008 1:27 PM

Thanks much for the feedback, IamKateness and Julie! I was beginning to hate on Nancy a bit by the end of Season 2 and was hoping Season 3 would erase that - oh well, even if they just filmed all those characters sitting around getting high and cracking wise I would enjoy it, so I can't complain!

One of these days I will figure out how to do cool stuff like BOLD and ITALICS on here . . .

BSG Season 4 has underwhelmed me thus far.

Posted by: Julie at April 16, 2008 2:11 PM

Mark Burnett really is scraping the bottom of the Vaseline Jar. What's next, "Jangles: The Search for the Next Top Black Vaudeville Performer"? How 'bout, "Jiggles: The Search for the Next Top Vegas Cocktail Waitress"? Or "Jenga: The Search for the Next Top Really Fucked Up College Game"?
I'm going to make my way through the letter "J" until I come up with a winner.
SpamBot, set up a meeting with some Billionaire Financiers! We going to Hollywood!!

Posted by: JP at April 16, 2008 2:26 PM

The spambot is a frakkin toaster! Note how there are many copies? There ya go.

"Jaime Bamber's on hand too for anyone reading who wants a little beefcake now and then too."

He really is a 'little beefcake', ! I saw him at a convention last weekend, and if the guy tops 5.7", I'd be surprised. Cute though.
Also present was Michelle Forbes (Admiral Cain). And, damn, I'm a straight woman, but... whew.

Nicole - enjoy the Torchwood finale! I did, but I also think it broke me....

Posted by: Tarn at April 16, 2008 2:46 PM

Tarn, thank you, I should've given Michelle her own spotlight earlier. The upcoming season review of "Homicide" will devote an adoring mention to her I'm completely sure.

I don't know if I'd handle seeing her in person very well. I told my friend I'd felt myself starting to disinterestedly drift in the middle of the first Torchwood season when he asked if I had any season two hookups. He told me to keep going and I'd end up satisfied, plus I'd need some season one information for the generally regarded, it seems, better season two.

Good thing I'm taking a week off next month. Sooo much TV backlog. And the comics backlog and the Netflix list...oy.

Posted by: Jay at April 16, 2008 3:16 PM

I 134th the love for Tricia Helfer. Actually, screw that, I'm in love with Six. The Cylon. Yea I'm a toaster-lover, what you gonna do about it? Everyone else is anyway! I love all the women on that show, after all the Sex and the Citys, it's a breath of fresh air to see women who don't feel empty just because there's no penis inside them.

I got bored with Lost after season 2 and nothing will convince me to go back to it. Weeds is on probation. I'll give them another chance, but if they bore me again, so help me God, I'll...ok I'll still watch, but I will NOT enjoy it!

Julie...why is it that you're always threatening murder to anyone/thing that stands between you and a woman's lips (of any kind)? Do you suppose the universe is trying to keep you straight?

Posted by: joker at April 16, 2008 3:39 PM

I don't KNOW Joker, the universe is mean. And obviously hates gay people.

Posted by: Julie at April 16, 2008 3:49 PM

Jay,
Season 2 Torchwood is better, but yeah, you probably do need to watch season 1 to fully appreciate. The characters grow on one, and you get a handle on the mcguffins which will turn up again later.

I think I handled it fine - apart from the staring and girlcrushing... ;-) She's cool. She was not at all fazed by running into several drunk conventioneers in the hotel ladies loo - she said that's what life was for! And I think she liked my hipflask.....

Posted by: Tarn at April 16, 2008 4:34 PM

Jamie Bamber is cute. Apollo sucks ass. actually, most everyone on that show is attractive and they all look better off the show than on it, except for Sharon and Helo, they are the hotness. i think this season is off to a pretty good start, but it would be even better if they would kill off Apollo.

yeah, more Lost! that is always a good thing. even when it's bad (or just confusing) it's still good. of course i liked Nikki and Paolo, so i'm easy.

i need to watch the second season of Torchwood. i have the whole season on dvr and i haven't had a chance to watch it yet. i watch way too much tv.

Posted by: pq at April 16, 2008 4:38 PM

Wait, Jay, you haven't seen all of Torchwood yet?

Tarn, I got spoiled. I don't even remember how; I clicked on a link to something and saw a synopsis out of the corner of my eye that blatantly said **** happens and **** is back and **** shows up and **** get stuck in **** and at the end there's ****

You get the idea. I already know what's going to happen but I'm still going to cry. Also, I want a Welsh accent. I think Gwen sounds cool.

Posted by: Nicole at April 16, 2008 4:46 PM

Tricia Helfer is a former Canadian 'super' model for them that doesn't know. Also, she hosted Canada's Next Top Model and they really managed to light that show so poorly (never mind her trying her best to sell the content) she just didn't look very Cylon-y to my mind. I think I'll check out BSG sometime soon...I don't have ANY time for TV, so I have to wend my way online to see what's shakin'. You guys are so darn gaga over it, I may as well wade in.

Posted by: replica at April 16, 2008 4:59 PM

I'm going to have to agree with you on the mariah carey night for american idol. one word: unnecessary, completely unnecessary.

Posted by: Leah at April 16, 2008 6:03 PM

'Here's hoping she gets a pilot that actually makes it to air, unlike her last pilot, 2007's "Them." '

Shame about 'Them' - i was really looking forward to it...as for Tracy - i'm glad she's got herself this deal with Fox...she's pretty good in BSG. Now all the studio exec's need to do is give the excellent James Callis (Gaius Balter) a deal or pilot...now that would make my day. :)

Posted by: Neena at April 17, 2008 8:54 AM

Nicole - you did? Oh, that's a bugger. But yes, I think you will still cry. I cried rewatching it a day later.

Gwen does sound cool, doesn't she? But careful with trying a Welsh accent - unless carefully done, it can come out as a cross between Cardiff and Calcutta!
