Why Is Everyone Pissed At Joe's Crab Shack? Just Some Casual Racism

Ah, Joe’s Crab Shack. Apparently not content with being Red Lobster’s Jimmy-Buffett-obsessed cousin, the Shack has fucked up big. How big?

According to the Minneapolis NAACP, Tyrone Williams and Chauntyll Allen were preparing to dine at Joe’s Crab Shack Wednesday night when they noticed a photo embedded inside the table. It appears to show a large group of white people watching a public execution of at least one black person. On the bottom of the picture, it reads: “Hanging at Groesbeck, Texas on April 12th 1895.” At the top, the caption reads, “All I said was that I didn’t like the gumbo.”

Yep. According to this story from a local Minnesota station, someone found a picture of an old school miscarriage of justice, and thought, “Yeah, this will sell our Go Shrimpin’ Handbreaded Fried Platter.” And sure, maybe they didn’t realize that this specific hanging, given that those being hanged are black and our country’s long history of treating black people totally fairly, was most likely a lynching. They just thought they were depicting a regular hanging. Which they still somehow believed would be a good idea to put on a goddamn dining table. And while we’re talking about that, Person Who Approved This Photo, I have to ask

And before anyone gets pissed, you’ll notice I said “casual” racism. I don’t believe anyone associated with Joe’s Crab Shack believes that racially motivated lynchings are OK. I believe that unlike other photos of racially motivated violence, this one didn’t set off any alarms. It’s not an active form of racism, but it’s racism. Imagine, for instance, that the Olive Garden used a photo of prisoners at concentration camps with the clever text bubble, “They ate all the breadsticks!” Yeah, that’s what this is like.

God, I hope I didn’t give anyone at the OG any ideas.
