Jesse is a 31-year-old Chinese photographer. When Jesse’s wife got pregnant, his mother decided to move in with the couple to help out during the challenging early stages of parenthood. Jesse sensed there was opportunity in this. His father was overweight, with alcoholic tendencies and a downbeat attitude towards life, so Jesse decided to invite him to stay too, and to gradually introduce a rigorous fitness regime to see if that could help put things right. Beginning with powerwalking and moving up to jogging and regular gym-going, Jesse’s programme was taken up by the entire family. For 6 months he documented their transformation on his Instagram page.

The results, well they speak for themselves:

Jesse’s father, previously lethargic and morose, gained a newfound joy for life and a confidence in himself.

Motivation is cheap and ephemeral, and no substitute for discipline. Nevertheless, Jesse’s family’s Instagram quest is one hell of a motivator. Change is possible. Mind and body are a holistic unit. To take care of one is to take care of the other.
