Allow The Younger Generation To Restore Your Hope With The MTV Movie Awards. Yes, You Read All Of Those Words Correctly.

No, MTV will not restore your faith in humanity through Dwayne Johnson alone, but when you have the chance to use a header photo of The Rock dressed as Superman, you take it. No, what I’m referring to is MTV’s decision to drop the gender specific categories, and, moreover, just piss off every last person who ever used “SJW” in a derogatory way.

And it’s not like the idea of dropping gendered categories for awards like the Oscars isn’t complicated. On the one hand, of course it’s outdated, binary, and reinforces the idea that men and women can’t compete at the same levels. On the other hand, where, oh where, would the Academy ever find enough tortured, genius white men to nominate? JK, lolz, we’ll always have enough white dudes to Oscar. And therein lies the problem. The idea of reviewing all candidates, and nominating the best performances is only effective if your judgement of “best” isn’t skewed by your biased perspective. Given the Oscars in 2015 and 2016, it might be a while until we’re objectively evaluating movies the way we should be.

But maybe not that much of a while. The MTV Movie Awards made a few mistakes (Emilia Clark plays a great character, she isn’t a great actor. Jared Leto is Jared Leto), but overall came away with one of the most impressively diverse, and, more importantly, just flat out right nominations list I’ve seen in a while. Plus the Best American Story list is enough to make Steve Bannon’s bloated head spin. I don’t get to say this often, but well played, MTV. Well played.
