If you didn’t catch David Blaine’s magic special on ABC last night, don’t worry. The best stuff is already on Youtube, like Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul’s freak-out reaction to a mindblowing card trick.

The special basically involved David Blaine doing freaky shit in front of his celebrity friends, and watching those celebrity friends freak out. The best bit, perhaps, was Ricky Gervais’ response to Blaine sticking a huge needle through his arm, which doesn’t look like magic so much as it looks like David Blaine sticking a huge f**king needle through his arm.

Honestly, I don’t know, and neither does Gervais, though I think we’re both erring on the side of, “Yup! He’s sticking a needle in his arm. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS GUY?”

Gervais’ uncomfortable reaction, however, is priceless.

If that doesn’t do it for you, in another segment, we get to see the reactions of Will and Jada Smith, Cranston and Paul, and Woody Harrelson and Kanye to Blaine sticking an ice pick through his hand. It is also freaky, but not as freaky as wondering why Woody Harrelson and Kanye West are hanging out together.

Seeing Ricky get freaked out is always delightful. I've enjoyed other instances, like his petrified near meltdown while driving around with Jerry Seinfeld and his disgust at Steve Merchant re-drinking some spat-out tea (extras corpsing reel, i think)

Omg Kanye and Woody Harrelson are friends? Im having many thoughts right now that I cant even.

  • Bodhi

Someone I vaguely know posted some crap on FB about Blaine being one of "Satan's angles" & how watching his special would invite black magic into your house, blah blah blah.

The first thing I thought of was, of course, isosceles or right?

  • I think Woody had the best line "Man, I have lost my erection entirely."

  • seth

Yeah, I remember when Harry Anderson did that on TV 20 years ago.

  • JenVegas

Why do you THINK Kanye and Woody are hanging out? Huh? Puff puff pass, muthf*ker. (idk, I'm just asssuuummming.)

  • John G.

Kanye doesn't need drugs. He gets high on himself.

  • JenVegas

So maybe Woody's just hangin' out, huffing eau du Kanye. Or this is some kind of hotboxing situation where you HAVE to lock yourself in a small room with Kanye so you can get uber high off the ego fumes while he talks about himself.

This is the first time I've ever agreed with and felt sympathy for Ricky Gervais.

Is this from the new Netflix special?

    Yes. This.

Sometimes the trick is, it's not a trick. Yes, he is sticking a needle through his arm. It's an incredibly thin and sturdy needle and it's round, meaning it's pushing the flesh out of the way. This is why you do peircings with a syringe like needle. If you do it with a sewing needle, the hole can essentially just close back up. You wouldn't want to hit a nerve though.

  • DarthBrookes

A lot of this sort of display doesn't fall under "magic" but "geeking" (as in circus geek, not computer or comic book geek), specifically, "block-heads".

It dates back to, and is still practiced by, Indian fakirs.

  • Skyler Durden

I remember watching Harry Anderson do the needle trick; it must have been at least 20 years ago, and I still see it in my nightmares.

*runs screaming and flailing from the Internet*

Harrison Ford: "Get the **** out of my house."

  • SilverDeb

That was the best. He looked like he was gonna cry.

  • BlackRabbit

I'm waiting for someone to shout "You're a sorcerer!" and punch him.

  • Al Borland's Beard

    "What's in the cup?"

    "Soda..orange soda."

    "What else is orange?"

"I dunno...Cheeze-Its." (Tries to take drink. Can't. Opens lid)

  • Ryan Ambrose

Now all he has to do is make a yacht disappear in front of a live audience.

Preferably while inside the damn thing.

I posted this pic a few days when the last David Blaine story came out. I came here to post it again. I'm glad I don't have to now.
I couldn't be more aligned with Mitch Hurwitz in my attitude to magicians.

The "impaled on sharp object" stuff is good, but my favorites are still the reactions of people to the tricks that make it look like Blaine is psychic/psychokinetic/the devil (i.e. the one he did with the girl in the park where the card ended up in her closed purse). Blaine is already creepy/skeevy, and then stuff appears where it shouldn't -- and I *love* watching the freak-outs.
