joseph-gordoddn-levitt.jpg

It’s been around two weeks since we’ve had our daily dose of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, so there’s a lot of doses to catch up on. This is as good a place as any to start: During one of his recent hitRECORD.org’s Summer in the City shows, JGL did a splendid little rendition of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance.”

It’s pretty cool, and bonus: You can hear “Bad Romance” now without a lot of tasteless and unnecessary sexuality jabs at Lady Gaga’s expense.

Also, I kind of appreciate that this is a slow news week post for a lot of movie blogs, but for Pajiba, this is the good stuff. It sure beats the hell out of news that Liam Neeson has signed on to Battleship.

Enough JGL!

Keep me updated on actors that I don't want to punch in the face for no reason besides the fact that I don't understand why everyone else is gaga for them!

I think JGL is a great actor, and he has a LOT of charisma, but he's not a singer. Sorry, but I'm not impressed with his musical stylings. At all.

Posted by: jimbob at September 8, 2010 3:46 PM

You know, I love JGL as much as the next Pajibette but this video does nothing for me. Absoluty nothing. Not even a single tingle in the panty region. I found it mildly amusing for 30 seconds and then I was tired of it.

Meh. Maybe next time.

Posted by: stardust at September 8, 2010 3:49 PM

I was going to curse my phone for the typo up there that should read "absolutely" but doesn't quite make it...but I have decided that I like my typo better than the actual word. So there.

Posted by: stardust at September 8, 2010 3:52 PM

I thought that was awesome, but I can't say I enjoyed it on the basis of its musicality.

Posted by: pxilated at September 8, 2010 3:55 PM

Love love love love love. I wish I could download this on itunes because it's clearly way better than the original.

Posted by: gee. ay. at September 8, 2010 3:56 PM

Yeah I don't think its the performance itself but the humor with which he does it that makes him adorable. This is a dude who doesn't take himself too seriously (unlike many celebrities) which I and obviously many others find attractive.

Posted by: MG at September 8, 2010 3:57 PM

Also, Liam Neeson:

I know your wife passed on, but you want to make her proud of your accomplishments as your life progresses on without her. It's actually pretty easy to do, seeing as you were phenomenal in such great pictures as Schindler's List and Batman Begins. Okay, Cloe was passable. But Clash of the Titans was not. And while I didn't mind The A-Team, you're Liam fucking Neeson, and are SO far above that.

And I mean (with all respect to the dead) your wife WAS in Maid in Manhattan, which does question her level of taste, but seriously that looks like fucking Casablanca next to this next movie.

Get a hold of your career, man! You're seriously making me re-think the whole question of whether I would sleep with you, Adrian Brody, or that guy from M*A*S*H if it came down to a odd nose fuckfest.

Posted by: penelope at September 8, 2010 3:57 PM

this is awesomely bad

Posted by: gunter at September 8, 2010 4:05 PM

I have not always been the biggest fan of JGL, I've always thought he was cute, but not "panty vanishing" cute. But that little musical interlude was so charming and fun. He's the kind of guy I'd be hanging out with at a bar because I was really trying to get with his friend, but after his friend ended up being a dolt and he ended up talking about Hitchcockian references in pop music, I'd end up just falling head over heels for him.

What a swell chap.

Also, it has been an absolute hellish couple of weeks at work for me, but I've been popping into Pajiba when I can for a quick breath of fresh air. So I'd genuinely like to thank you, Rowles, for titling this "*Sah-woon*," seriously, it's goofy little nonsense like that, that makes me want to hug this site. And the urge to hug after the over-whelming desire for violence against people who have to ask if required fields are, "really required," is a good feeling.

Thanks for helping me put down the chainsaw, is what I'm saying. I'm too much of a crybaby to make it in jail.

Isn't that the kid from "Third Rock"?

Posted by: grumpiestoldman at September 8, 2010 4:33 PM

This version of Lissie doing it is far better. But JGL did ok.

I'm pretty sure that wasn't meant to be taken seriously. And on that note HOW EFFIN CUTE IS HE????

Posted by: Danielle Lilly at September 8, 2010 4:41 PM

Stop promoting that hack.

Posted by: Jay at September 8, 2010 4:45 PM

oh frat boy guitar, will you ever be fun?

Posted by: JohnnyVonAwesome at September 8, 2010 4:51 PM

A heavy dose of enthusiasm plus humility is the hallmark of the good folk. I think it's pretty hard to hide your true nature if you spend enough time in the public eye.

Like - Sandra Bullock? Clearly playing along with 'perky' until the next adjective arrives. Jennifer Aniston? Not a creative bone in her body, decent placeholder. Michael Cera? Nebbish and working it while it lasts. Jason Statham? Good sense of humor, deadly serious about career. Hugh Jackman? Open mind, huge vanity. It's easy to go on...

Then you just get shiny people like this guy, who do some simple things, happily - I like exactly what I see. I say MOAR.

The cover is shit, like any cover of "Bad Romance." That song is produced within a millimeter of its life and designed to showcase a...unique and delicate little flower of the entertainment industry. No one is going to be able to cover it unless they totally overhaul the song and find some way to make it not be about very precise rhythm juxtaposed against a very smooth chorus and school-yard like chanting in a made-up language. It really is a shitty song somehow elevated by excellent production to pure ear candy.

Posted by: Robert at September 8, 2010 5:14 PM

Johnny One-Note.

He should stick to singing in the shower.

Posted by: BWeaves at September 8, 2010 5:36 PM

Wow...I'm surprised by the overall crankiness of the comments. I seriously doubt that JGL was TRYING to sound musical or produce a critically-acclaimed cover of "Bad Romance." He just seemed like he was having fun messing around.

Posted by: bonnie at September 8, 2010 5:49 PM

kind of confused as to why there's so much badness directed at the clip? i thought it was funny, his voice wasn't half bad, and yeah...he's pretty freaking cute. it wasn't like it made my ears bleed and honestly...he was covering GAGA. what do you want? a bubble suit?

Posted by: taye biggs at September 8, 2010 6:35 PM

The hitRECord events seem like so damn much fun - just s bunch of people throwing shit against the wall and seeing what sticks. I fucking love it; it's the same process as a great experimental theater workshop but with a damned sense of humor. Also, the French section only makes me want to make out with him more.

A friend of mine from high school got to go onstage and read at this event, and JGL gave her a hug. She has a picture on FB as evidence and I can't decide if I'm happy for her for getting to participate, or if I want to strangle her for getting a hot, sexy JGL embrace.

Le sigh.

Posted by: Tammy at September 8, 2010 7:06 PM

y'all sure are cranky today. He's not trying to prove he's the world's best singer, he's just having fun. And being damn cute while doing it.

Posted by: dr. pisaster at September 8, 2010 8:12 PM

This is not the video to watch to judge JGL's singing ability. Look up "I Don't Want to Live on the Moon" or "Nothing Big".

Posted by: Michelle at September 8, 2010 8:44 PM

so much badness directed at the clip?

Cause it's that hack's music!

I unapologetically love JGL, ever since Mysterious Skin. I also loved 500 Days of Summer which I'm sure at this point has had a backlash, then a backlash to the backlash, etc., but I don't care. And the very best part of it (for me) was his rendition of "Here Comes Your Man". JGL combined with the Pixies = happy happy day. I'm loving all of these vids from the HitRecord.org sessions - keep 'em coming!

As far as Gaga goes, I'm not overly familiar with her music, and I'm far from a pop music afficiando, but I do really like this song. Loved the Glee version too, maybe more than the original.

At this point, JGL just needs to record a covers album, right? I'd buy it from iTunes lickety split.

Posted by: Nicole at September 9, 2010 11:59 AM

YES, Nicole.

Any dark haired man drunkenly karaoke-ing Here Comes Your Man is mm mm MMM! in my book!

Posted by: Natalia at September 9, 2010 12:20 PM

Fucking adorable.

I saw this yesterday but couldn't comment (stupid work filters). I love him, I love that he's goofy and doesn't take himself seriously, it's very appealing. Haters keep on hating, JGL can be mine all mine...

Posted by: Even Stevens at September 9, 2010 1:14 PM

This is my favorite video ever.
He is so adorable! Ohmygoodness. *swoons*
I love that there are actors out there who are both insanely talented, intelligent, and good looking. It's the perfect combo.

Posted by: Talia at September 9, 2010 4:30 PM

Rusty--can the the rest of us JGL fans come too? At least save us a piece of cake!

Posted by: NeoCleo at September 9, 2010 5:41 PM

as Talia said: aw, JGL plays a guitar and sings! He sounds like, if he was singing seriously, he wouldn't need to be 'auto-tuned'. *to my totally untrained ear'.

Spot on with this write-up, I seriously think this page demands far more attention. I’ll probably be repeatedly to read much more, thank you for that information.

Posted by: Nollen at January 23, 2011 12:04 PM

Next time I read through a blogs, I hope that it doesnt disappoint me as much as this one. I'm talking about, I am aware it was eventually my choice to read, however I essentially thought you'll have something useful to express. Most I hear is mostly a bunch of whining about something you might fix if you werent too busy looking for consideration.
