Rainn Wilson Does A Pretty Impressive Dr. House Impression In His New CBS Pilot

Rainn Wilson’s proposed follow-up to “The Office” is another in a long line of defective detective shows. This one, called “Backstrom,” hasn’t been picked up by CBS yet, but Wilson, in an effort to build buzz, tweeted what those in the industry call a “sizzle reel.” Which, as far as I can tell, is just a very long trailer. Does it look any good? Enh, it looks alright. As I mentioned, Wilson seems to be trying to distance himself from the Dwight Schrute character by adopting a gruff Dr. Gregory House persona. And it’s not as if Dwight was a charm factory. In better news, Wilson is joined by both Mamie Gummer (“The Good Wife,” “Emily Owens,” “Meryl Streep’s Loins”) and Dennis Haysbert (“24,” “All-State Commercials,” “My Dreams”). Ain’t nothing wrong with that.

Seems an awful lot like Perception.

  • He's doing Nick Offerman playing Ron Swanson playing Dr. House.

I get the sense that this could be wonderful on cable. But it will flounder and be terribly mediocre on CBS. Which, at CBS, means it will get 8 seasons.

Slightly off topic here. The show takes place in Portland, Oregon and yet they filmed the pilot in Vancouver, BC. Now I certainly won't argue that Vancouver cannot pass for Portland and they certainly have the experience and resources for television production. However Portland has been going through a television and movie Renaissance of sorts in the recent past few years and could easily accommodate another TV series- especially one that's supposed to take place there. The point I suppose is that it seems silly to shoot a stone's throw away when the real thing would be just as suited if not better. Perhaps they'll be more inclined to move there if the series gets picked up.

They probably shot the pilot in Vancouver for lack of funds. Isn't it cheaper to film there? There might not be a lot of people backing up the project so they needed to save a buck or two.

Looks good. I'm certainly going to suggest the Corsican folk remedy for all and any ailments

Mamie Gummer from the horribly prematurely cancelled Off the Map! Too bad that tool from the Office is in this too.

  • Laura26

    Looks good to me!

It looks like something I would watch. This seems like a nice change of pace for him, not Dwight redux, but also not such a blatant 180.

It looks pretty good, I like the supporting cast too. Plus if Pajiba doesn't like it, it must be a good procedural.

Not a House fan. My hubby thought he was having a heart attack, so I drove him to the emergency room. The ER doctor did his best House impression, and I looked at him like he was an idiot and demanded to see his supervisor. He immediately got very nice and said, "House." I said, "Yes, I live in a house. What's that got to do with anything?" He said, "No, House, the TV show." I said, "Never watched it." He got humble after that.

I'm sorry, but Hugh Laurie is just WRONG with an American accent. He is forever Bertie Wooster to me, or the King on Blackadder.

I'm just tired of people who are pissed off at their jobs. I see too much of that in real life.

This just makes me want to see an Office spin-off where Dwight moves to a new city and becomes a homicide detective. Oh... that's essentially what this is.

    I wouldn't mind visiting Meryl Streep's lions.

  • Joe Grunenwald

    They would eat you alive.

  • Aidan Harr

Oh look, a show where Rainn Wilson says funny things and eats food.
That's literally all I need to hear to give this a watch.
What can I say, I'm easy to please.

  • Luis

I'll give it a try. It looks interesting.
