Purely for Educational Purposes: Ellen Degeneres and Britney Spears Demonstrate Gangnam Style

Here's my rule of thumb for web culture trends: I will ignore the first two Internet headlines referring to a new trend (say, planking), but after that, I will typically cave in just so I know what the hell it is that people are referring to. Gangnam is the newest dumb trend that everyone is buzzing about, and that Adam Sandler will refer to lamely in a movie two years from now, which is about two years after it will have lost all cultural relevancy.

Here were the first two headlines about Gangnam style I ignored. That second post -- from my Pajiba/Uproxx colleague, Josh Kurp -- noted "If we have to explain 'Gangnam Style' to you, you're not very good at the Internet," which is totally untrue: I'm very good at the Internet, although I'm mostly good at filtering out things I don't want to know about.

But hell if the trend hasn't transcended to "Ellen," where Britney Spears and Simon Cowell came on, and then Britney and Ellen actually demonstrated it along with Psy, the South Korean man who originated it.

This is all for educational purposes. It is not an endorsement. I will note, however, that it appears that Britney Spears is perpetually under heavy sedation these days. Did her handlers turn her into a Stepford?

Comments Are Welcome, Bigots and Trolls Are Not

When I see that pony ride thing, I inevitably think:

    You're using coconuts.

  • jams

what's his name!? Oh my...I just cant believe it!

  • seemless

Me, I'm waiting for the Star Wars parody.

    Gungan Style!!

  • Javier

so, when's the Kate Upton Gangnam Style gif going to come?

  • ghunda

Replace Britney with Psy and I'll watch X-Factor.

  • Yocean

  • Dang. Britney just has this permanent "I'm too old for this shit" look on her face nowadays, doesn't she? Like she just wants to stay home and go to PTA meetings, but she just can't. Now I'm sad.

I'll go watch Gangnam Style again.

  • Dress classy, dance cheesy. Words to live by.

  • Drake

Poor Britney. She looks like one of my bi-polar friends when he accidentally over-medicates himself.

  • Brooke

I'm pretty sure that's exactly what is going on here. She always has that heavily medicated way about her. I'm not making fun, I know from personal experience what that looks like.

  • mairimba

Will and Carlton did that dance YEARS ago!

  • I've been trying to ignore Gangnam Style all day.

  • Stark_Raft

Every time I see Psy he just gets cooler and cooler. Gangnam Style is even supposed to be a parody of the "gangster" or "swag" culture in Korea. He worked really hard to get where he is and oh my god when did I become Psy's biggest fan?

  • MikeRoorda

When this started popping up all over Reddit during the end of last week and this weekend, I had a moment of "Ohmyfuck. We're going to make THIS a thing now?" But, as stated by others, Psy seems to be in on the joke and intentionally lame. (Which, of course, means it's ACTUALLY cool.) It'd be nice if someone would, you know, maybe do an English interview with him as well instead of just doing that stupid ride-the-pony dance and calling it a day.

  • I_Sell_Books

    Psy oppa!

  • Socrates_Johnson

It still has nothing on Tunak Tunak Tun. That guy was inspired.

  • alannaofdoom

So, I was going through the depths of my itunes last night and it turns out I must've downloaded that song, like, a decade ago. How had I forgotten about it? What a lovely walk down memory lane that was. And now you mention it here! Could this be a spontaneous Tunak revival? Please say yes.

  • Socrates_Johnson

    We can only hope.

  • lowercase_ryan

Oh and I still think of Jezzer every time I see this guy in the elevator.

  • BWeaves

He's riding one of those bouncy balls, like I had when I was THREE. This is a dance style for the pre-K set.

  • lowercase_ryan

It's a horsey dance, according to Psy.

  • BWeaves

Yeah, I know, but he still looks like he's riding a bouncy ball.

  • SugarSmak

Okay, since we're (hopefully) in a "no shame zone" (and I do know I'm posting on Pajiba, so I wouldn't be surprised if I were mocked for the "late to the party-itis" I always seem to suffer from), I'll admit that I finally Googled "Gangnam Style" four days ago. I like to keep up with what the "kids" are up to (and I want to at least appear cool to my 17-year-old niece), so I'm glad I did.The song is fun and harmless (and Psy is quite charming), but I'm sure I'll be completely sick of it in, oh, about 2 weeks.

  • competitivenonfiction

I'm just really impressed that Britney managed this in heels.

  • and a hobbling skirt

  • lowercase_ryan

I don't give a shit about fads and internet buzz and headlines. All I know is that if you watch the Gangam Style video and you DON'T like it, then you're either a liar or a horrible person. But probably both.

  • Pinky McLadybits

I twisted my knee the other day while dancing to and singing Gangnam Style. All alone. In my house.

  • Ley

But of course Ellen had to pick this trend up. She's adorable and she makes everything ridiculous...adorable. And my God, you weren't kidding about Britney...

  • mags

    Pssst he's South Korean

  • Slash

Eh, fluffy pop culture like this doesn't bother me, it's kinda nice to have "culture" that doesn't involve politics or "news" about one wealthy celebrity fucking another wealthy celebrity, but I hated the song about 10 seconds in.

  • Radio stations in the US are using the beat for bumpers on segments now. Gangnam Style isn't going away anytime soon. At least it's a catchy song that's meant to be ridiculous. There's self awareness here. I can appreciate that.

  • lowercase_ryan

they play the full song here. All Korean, all the time.

  • Pookie

Rowles, as much as I like you I wish I hadn’t clicked on the video. I didn’t need to know this guy or his new dance which looks suspiciously like every dance some elementary school kid has done since the beginning of time.

  • lonolove

I believe PSY is South Korean, though I'm sure if the Gangnam Style video were shown in North Korea the people would rise up and overthrow their oppressors because HOT DAMN! They are havin' it large down there!

  • pajiba

Oh, fine: But blame Josh! I know everything I know about Gangnam Style from him: http://www.uproxx.com/webcultu...

  • Luke

"actually demonstrated it along with Psy, the North Korean man who originated it"

    Cough...south korean...he's SOUTH Korean...cough

  • zeke_the_pig

That initial move he does, when he dances towards the stage... Don't tell me that's a dance. If that move could be harnessed by the North Korean military it'd be devastating. Think of the sight of 5,000 smartly suited soldiers doing that move across the Demilitarized Zone. Within minutes there'd be no South Korea. They'd all join in.
America was once worried about the 'Domino Effect' of Communism in South East Asia. If this move had existed back then, they'd have shat their collective pants before eventually joining in too.
In fact, thinking about it, that's exactly what it looks like: someone who's shat their pants, and now they're trying to make their way to a toilet very quickly, but for some reason they're not that unhappy about it.
Gangnam Style: simultaneously the most terrifying and ridiculous thing since Gary Busey's face.

  • zeke_the_pig

Right, now that we know - thanks to the other commenters - that he is actually South Korean, which makes MUCH MORE SENSE, I think we can cease to worry. Still, awfully irresponsible of the South Koreans to broadcast instructions to their deadliest weapon. Or maybe if Oppenheimer were alive today he'd have Tumblr'd the shit outta that little firework of his.

  • zeke_the_pig

I feel damn educated. If university had been like this I'd have gone fucking far.
