Norwegian Television is Better Than Ours: Ylvis' "The Fox" Answers an Age-Old Question

By Rob Payne | Videos | September 5, 2013 | Comments ()

To be fair, I don’t watch Norwegian television, or, really, any TV programming that isn’t from English-speaking countries. It isn’t necessarily jingoistic of me, I just don’t take the time. Nor, I’m guessing, do most of you reading who live in the good old U.S. of A. Thankfully, there are people doing God’s work on the Internet by bringing the best of international pop culture to our e-shores and today they’ve discovered a doozy.

Ylvis is the name of a Nordic comedy duo (Bård Ylvisåker and Vegard Ylvisåker) and they have a variety/talk show sort of thing on a channel called TVNorge. Just like our own televisual celebrities, Ylvis is busy promoting their upcoming season of “I Kveld Med” with a big media campaign that involves, among other things, overly literal (and NSFW without earbuds) soul music. Unlike our televisual celebrities, Ylvis has made one of the most bizarre yet oddly endearing, and kind of catchy, music videos wherein they sing about animal noises like a nursery rhyme… while wearing what can only be described as FurryChic. I can’t really do it justice, so I suggest you watch the video, “The Fox,” below and bask in the awesome terribleness. Or, is it terrible awesomeness? Either way, it’s the best three minutes and forty-five seconds you’ll have all day, and maybe even all week.

Happy Thursday!

Kinda puts “Gangnam Style” to shame, doesn’t it?

Rob Payne also writes the web comic The Unstoppable Force, tweets on the Twitter, tumbls on the Tumblr, and his wares can be purchased here. He owes finding this video to a co-worker at the day job (thanks, Chrissie).

What is the name of the girl who is disguised as a cat?

  • moro123

    What does the CNN say?
Don't watch norwegian comedy! You will just end up bored with your local stuff.

  • krusedUlrik

The Norwegian PBS, NRK, made this promotional music video for a cartooned talk show in 2007:http://youtu.be/Zm8-UiCN9pg

Might still have some strange flaging as #NSFW, and there for views must be over 18 years, but still hillarious!

  • Malin

I like their Stonehenge song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

  • Kristine

Stonehenge is definately their best one.

  • foca9

Finally something Norwegian on here! Anyway, these two are fantastic. Work It is the greatest song ever.

  • Zirza

I showed this to my class today. Turns out twelve year olds with minimal comprehension of English love this. Less pleasant is the fact that I had to put up with DINGDINGINGDINGDINGRINGDING for the rest of the hour.

  • tania semenova

They kinda have stolen the lyrics from the Italian children's song "Il Coccodrillo come fa?" (What sound does the Crocodile make?) At least the video is original:)

  • "Fine, I'll bite."
    *click*
    *People dressed as animals*
    "Nope."

    Apparently, Norway has excellent drugs.

  • Sara_Tonin00

Everyday is Sigfried the Seamonster day in Norway.

  • Warkoi

Another fantastic music video from Ylvis! I could actually listen to this for pure music enjoyment, since it's pretty well made on top of it being really funny.

A song about the international diplomat and former UN Official Jan Egeland.

  • Ninja_Toes

We get foxes in Australia too, but you rarely see them and never hear them. They are like furry red ninjas, appearing at night, and only at the very outskirts of town. I always imagined they made a sound like deep ominous laughter, sort of like "mwhuuhaaha!"

If you like this, you should also check out their dubstep song:

    Gosh, that was exxxcellent !

  • alannaofdoom

"Has anyone in this family ever even seen a [fox]?"

  • martin

Norwegians have the best furry-swinger key parties

  • Zirza

These guys are a glamrock suit and a jazz reference away from The Mighty Boosh. In a good way.

  • koko temur

i stambled by accident on "nevermind the buzzcocks" episode about two days ago, and now i am in a "everything and anything related to noel fielding" free fall. I regret noooooothing!

  • Morgan_LaFai

have you found his and Russell Brands team up on The Big Fat Quiz of the Year? It is fantastic.

  • koko temur

Well, i know what i will be doing instead if studing today!
    Thanks, you two!

  • Zirza

ALMOST as good as his team-up with Richard Ayoade.

  • Morgan_LaFai

Is that the one where Ayoade discusses the water pressure in his shower, cause that was a truly great moment.

  • Zirza

Yes, that one. I think it was the Big Fat Quiz of the noughties. Zeroes. Whatever. That one.

  • kinoumenthe

    Will you communicate by mo-o-o-o-orse ? mo-o-o-o-orse ?

How will you speak to that ho-o-o-o-orse ? ho-o-o-o-orse ?

These Norwegians know how to ask the important questions.

  • Chris

The sounds in the second chorus could be straight from the Bluth family chicken dance.

  • BWeaves

That was great. It was cute and very catchy.

  • mswas

I know what the fox says. It says "Cuss you!"

  • Valhallaback Girl

There is nothing I don't love about this video. Dear god the subtitles....I just.....crying....

  • Crystal O.

I have no words. When that fox started scatting in a sassy way, I almost died.

  • Captain_Tuttle

My assistant just came in to see if I was all right. I'm sitting here with tears streaming down my face.

    I particularly like the subtitles - hatee-hatee-hatee-ho.

  • emmalita

I love that video. A fox lives in my backyard, so I know exactly what the fox says. It says "yipyipyip," or, if faced with my roommate's large dog, sounds like an angry goose.

  • Patty O'Green

I am having meteoric deja-vu... I've got the eeriest feeling that I read this article once a year, right down to the comments...

  • emmalita

You are not wrong. It's one of our religious rites to recreate this post and thread every year. Congratulations on noticing. Now I am authorized to welcome you to the Secret Society of Urban Wildlife, Order of Opossum. Keep an eye on your doorstep, a representative will be there shortly with your badge.

  • Fabius_Maximus

Not to mention the human-like screams.

  • emmalita

My fox does not do that. Maybe there's something wrong with him.

  • Fabius_Maximus

It's a mating call, I believe. Maybe there are no available partners in the vicinity.

    Just for reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

Imagine that noise at night amplified by three high apartment blocks forming a 'U' and a parking lot. You go from sleeping to standing in bed in no time, I tell you.

  • kinoumenthe

So that's what that sound is !

I've heard it many times, though I can't pinpoint the exact times, but I just recognised it. Now I'll know what it is.

  • emmalita

I lived in an old farmhouse surrounded by forest-like areas and fields. Being a life-long city dweller, I frequently woke up with my heart pounding, only to realize I had heard an animal making some sort of noise.

  • Fabius_Maximus

Well, one good thing about living in my city is that it is pretty 'green', so you get a share of wildlife. I live close to a medium-sized forest (within the city limits), and it's not uncommon to encounter foxes, deer and wild boars. The latter are quite scary.

We even get raccoons (which certainly are not native here). I recently saw a mother with three young traversing said parking lot. They looked very healthy.

  • emmalita

We get foxes (obviously) and deer, but no wild boars. Wild boars are notoriously bad tempered, I would not like to encounter one. Raccoons can also be really nasty. Stay far away. Like dolphins, they are not as cute as they look.

  • Fabius_Maximus

Yeah, I heard that about raccoons. I tend to keep my distance to wild animals as a rule.

  • tmoney

Oh my god, I haven't laughed that hard from a video in forever. It's like the Bluth family trying to do chicken impressions, only better. I will be annoying my office all day with this.
