Never Forget: The Original 'Star Wars' Trailer Was Kind of Terrible

With the release of the chills-giving second teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, this might be a good time to look back on a less impressive Star Wars trailer: the very first one. Take a look at this trailer from 1977, which gives off a distinctly eerier vibe than the finished product:

Of course, the obvious missing ingredient here is the music. George Lucas has spoken about how everyone kind of hated rough cuts of A New Hope until he was finally able to put it to John Williams’ score. This trailer makes it clear why. This is a story that we want to get swept up in. That trailer just had no sweep. For contrast (and, really, just because I want to watch it again), here’s the new one from earlier today.

See? Sweep.
