Among the revelations in this brilliant interview of Maurice Sendak by Stephen Colbert:

  • Sendak thinks that Newt Gingrich is a “hopelessly gross and vile.”

  • The “wild rumpus” in “Where the Wild Things Are” is a reference to sex.

  • Maurice Sendak is gay (really? I had no idea)

  • Maurice Sendak is unfamiliar with common slang for penises

  • Sendak would never do a sequel to “Where the Wild Things Are”

  • Sendak is an adorably cantankerous old man.

This just made my day. I hope my coworkers couldn't hear me giggling at my desk.

  • Sadly, I fear there are people out there who will take this interview and use it against Sendak and his lovely books.

Sendak did a 41 minute interview with Spike Jonze a couple years ago. It was on HBO, and called Tell Them Anything You Want: a Portrait of Maurice Sendak. Fascinating stuff.

Oh my god, I love this clip so much I want to wild rumpus it.

YES, I WANT MY "WORST ONLINE PUN EVER (INSPIRED BY MAURICE SENDAK'S GENIUS WORK)" AWARD NOW.

Maurice Sendak is hilariously grumpy and cantankerous, but has also had a really tragic life. I read a heart wrenching interview on the Guardian: Maurice Sendak: 'I refuse to lie to children'

Where in the name of Zeus's Butthole did you find that epic header pic??

I have no special feelings for Sendak, but I looooved this interview.

I can't stop laughing. "Where the wild MILFs are"? And Colbert...I really do think in all seriousness, I'd vote for him for POTUS.

But then, what do I know? I liked Cowboys & Aliens.

If you like Sendak then this Fresh Air interview from last year will probably make you cry: http://www.npr.org/2011/09/20/140435330/this-pig-wants-to-party-maurice-sendaks-latest

If you haven't read this little story about a fan letter to Maurice Sendak, do: it's awesome.

"Jim loved your card so much he ate it."

This was the best thing I'd seen on TV (ok laptop) in YEARS. I had to keep rewatching it last night to appreciate each individual priceless gem.
    So much good.

I love that interview in the Guardian so much, I go and re-read it roughly every two months.

"Of Salman Rushdie, who once gave him a terrible review in the New York Times, he says: "That flaccid fuckhead. He was detestable. I called up the Ayatollah, nobody knows that." Roald Dahl: "The cruelty in his books is off-putting. Scary guy. I know he's very popular but what's nice about this guy? He's dead, that's what's nice about him." Stephen King: "Bullshit." Gwyneth Paltrow: "I can't stand her.""

Also, it's a funny point about him being gay, and perhaps it's to do with the internet being a relatively recent thing, but I do wonder if it wasn't mentioned much earlier because he's a child's writer.

PG13, the header pic is straight from The Colbert Report.

The two interviews I saw are priceless! I was surprised to hear he is gay as well. I can't wait for the upcoming boycott. Hopefully it'll help put some more royalties in the man's bank (or mattress)

i miss to you, when you come to me ?

When it comes to Maurice Sendak, I wonder why he would tell people to go to hell, and why does he not want to do a sequel to his book called Where The Wild Things Are.

To me...I am hoping for a sequel to happen, so everyone could find out on what happens next with Max and the Wild Things, and maybe Max could take Carol, the leader of the Wild Things with him to his homeland, so Carol could meet Max's family.

His book and Spike Jonze's movie of Where The Wild Things Are is my favorite movie, and I do like the scenes that has to do with Carol and Max, cause they both had a good friendship, and that both James Gandolfini and Max Records did a very good job as their characters.

And I am still hoping for a sequel to happen for the movie as well, and I think a sequel is a very good idea.
