Marvel's One-Shot Films Demonstrate Clark Gregg's Awesomeness

I’m really digging this idea. Marvel Entertainment has been adding short films to the DVD releases of their recent tentpoles (building up towards the Avengers extravaganza next summer). They’re 3-5 minutes long, focusing on Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson, who is one of the better creations from the Marvel team.

Interestingly, Agent Coulson (or “Son of Coul” as Thor called him) was created entirely for the films — he’s a character that never existed in the comic book universe before. Whoever wrote him (and kudos to Jon Favreau for casting Gregg in Iron Man) quickly realized he was becoming a fan favorite, and as such he’s shown up in both Iron Man films, as well as Thor. The short films (called “One Shots”) are designed to serve as bridges between the films, as well as being simple lighthearted little vignettes. And now they’re available in their entirety online, in case you’re not running out to buy the Thor or Captain America blu rays.

The first one, The Consultant, helps explain the events at the end of The Incredible Hulk.

Here’s the second one, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Thor’s Hammer, takes place after Iron Man 2 and right before Coulson finds himself in New Mexico dealing with the events of Thor. It also allows us to see that Coulson himself is pretty goddamn badass.

Seriously, I would totally watch a Phil Coulson: Agent Of S.H.I.E.L.D. movie.

Clark Gregg was my least favorite part of New Adventures of Old Christine, but I like him as Coulson.

Sometimes reconciling these facts gives me a headache.

I remember first seeing Clark Gregg in the West Wing as an FBI agent, and I've liked him ever since.

These one-shots were more intriguing than Thor, Captain America, and Green Lantern combined

I knew him from somewhere before his time on "The West Wing," but I couldn't quite place it until I looked it up.

He was on "Sports Night" and played the guy who owns Quo Vadimus.

No lie, Agent Coulson is my favorite part of all of the Marvel movies. He's just so competent. And droll. And awesome.

Screw Tony Stark; I'll take one Coulson to go.

I would absolutely watch that movie.

I would also screw Tony Stark and then take Agent Coulson to go.

He's so long suffering, I love it.

Fun fact about Clark Gregg I only know because I watch Dancing With The Stars: He's married to Jennifer Grey.

Weird, RIGHT? Maybe not weird as much as "random".

Man, I must have gotten the wrong tai bo video.

I love this guy. He's got a really hilarious smirk, and his reaction shots to the crazyass superheroes are pretty awesome. It's hard to stand out among the super-buff tough guys, but he does.

Clark Gregg is a Mamet vet -- he's part of the theater group and has done several of the movies. Whenever I hear his voice, I expect all his words to come out in Mamet rhythm.
