Mandy Patinkin Speaks So Passionately About His Princess Bride Character That Your Heart Is Probably Going to Explode

This clip is a couple of months old (shut up), but it was from the George Stroumboulopoulos show, which is Canadian or something, and since no one pays attention to Canadians (not even other Canadians!), no one has actually seen this. Someone over at Reddit resurrected it, because it’s a video that needs resurrecting, damnit.

In it, Mandy Patinkin talks at length about his Princess Bride character, Inigo Montoya, and how he believed that, if his character could avenge his father’s death, Patinkin himself could somehow will his own father — who died of cancer — back from death. And the Patinkin delivers his favorite line from the film, and it’s probably not the line you think it is, and … when it’s all said and done, you just kind of want to reach out and give the guy a hug, but you shouldn’t. Because you’re a stranger, and that would be weird. Don’t be weird.

My confusion over why you were butchering George Stephanopoulos's name followed by Patinkin's intensity while trying not to be swallowed by that hovering Canadian made for a weird couple of minutes. But I'm feeling better now, and I liked the video.

  • Jiffylush

One of the extras on the DVD (maybe also on the Blu-ray) has Mandy talking about what how he felt when he watched the first screening with his wife and everyone else. It was beautiful and I tear up just thinking about it. He was basically saying that he couldn't believe that he got to be in this movie.

  • Idle Primate

Strombo is a national treasure. Always liked him on the radio too

  • Lauren_Lauren

George is fantastic. His interviews are intimate, intelligent, funny, and you can usually tell that his guests are enjoying themselves. He's a breath of fresh air.

For the record, Dustin, George Stroumboulopoulos works for CNN now, doing basically the same thing he was doing in Canada.

This is actually my favorite Stroumboulopoulos bit:

  • **I AM** NotTheOne

Enough. Yesterday Ruffalo and today Patinkin. The cockles of my cold dead heart refuse to be warmed, sir!

  • Dave Dorris

Hey, I'm a big fan of George. I think he's a pretty great interviewer.

  • Wigamer

It is not my heart that explodes when I think of young Mandy.

  • e jerry powell

woof. When he makes rabbi, I will knock Hadass out and marry him myself.

  • TK

As a Canadian, I'm going to call you on that statement, "no one pays attention to Canadians (not even other Canadians!)". We absolutely do pay attention, and we're passionate about it. And as for George Stroumboulopoulos, well, he has a gig on CNN now. Not permanent, because hey, he's not about to leave Canada. But he's so good other countries are clamoring to see him and claim him as their own.

Best not to throw shade on others when promoting a really positive interview. Takes away from the whole thing.

  • Kari

I say "I do not think it means what you think it means" at least once a week. To quote Claire Danes, "Mandy Patinkin - HOLLA!"

  • Jo 'Mama' Besser

You stole that from meeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!! This is the worst 9:48 pm ever!!!

  • Bodhi

Getting arrested would be worth the tackle-hug I'd give this man if I ever meet him.

  • chanohack

I saw John Cleese once, and TOTALLY considered it. But, you know, he's older.

  • Drake

OK, a chance to break out my Mandy Patinkin story. Many years ago I had to fly from Dallas into NYC on a near weekly basis for work. These were the days when they flew wide-body jets everywhere, and didn't care that they were only half-full. So, I often had an entire center section of 5 seats to myself, and would stretch out and sleep.

On one trip I was snoozing and I felt someone looking at me. I opened my eyes and there was Mandy Patinkin walking up the aisle, and he stopped and smiled and nodded at me. I was speechless, and just smiled and nodded back and he walked on.

    There. My brush with greatness!

  • ElvisCostelegram

Why are they sitting so close to each other?

  • Sassy Rouge

It's a Strombo thing. He like to lean in, which makes his guests lean in. Also, Strombo smells really nice.

  • Mandy Patinkin should be everybody's uncle.

  • Allijo

Clean up on aisle 3. Tears and cardiac matter.

  • JJ

George, buddy, you're taking this "lean in" stuff much too literally.

  • George Tarleton

I'm still coming to grips with the fact that The Princess Bride is 26 years old. I was not ready for that realization.

But good god, that man's intensity is white-hot, and yeah, chills at the end there.

I have to say that one of my favorite Inigo lines is from right before the one he mentions, where he says, in the gentlest of tones, "Fezzik... you did something right!" with this really great little smile. The relationship between Inigo and Fezzik is one of the best things about that movie.

  • DeltaJuliet

What's fun is when my 10 year old son comes home from summer camp and asks me "Did you ever hear of the Princess Bride movie? It's really great, we should rent it" and I'm like, yeah, babe, it came out when I was your age.
Nice to see it holds up though. Now I need to search Amazon for a cheap DVD copy.

  • Natalie

I saw it at Target the other day for $5. Checkout aisles.

  • DeltaJuliet

Thanks for the head up! My son will be pumped.

  • Natalie

Also Annie. I think I need to go back so I can watch Carol Burnett walk into a wall while singing Easy street with Tim Curry and Bernadette Peters.
It's a good day for cheap DVDs.

  • chanohack

I always liked, "He's right on top of us! I wonder if he's using the same wind we are using."

  • Natalie

Is it just me that finds him incredibly attractive? Whether he's a Yeshiva student or an ER doctor or an Argentinian revolutionary or some senior CIA guy.
But, he doesn't do it for me as Inigo Montoya.

  • e jerry powell

    He's DEAD SEXY.

I had front-row-center tickets during the Dress Casual tour. I got a little fleck of Patinkin spit on me.

  • Wigamer

I think it's the hair. I hope it was a wig.

  • ZbornakSyndrome

Talent is always sexy. But yeah, he's pretty handsome anyway.

  • BWeaves

I find him attractive in all incarnations.

  • HMDK

There's not enough love in the world.

  • MrsAtaxxia

Oh Mandy! He really is just the best.

  • F'mal DeHyde

    He's a very intense man.

  • e jerry powell

And very prickly. But very cute.

  • Sara_Tonin00

Huh - coincidentally enough, I just came across this piece from the Times' magazine about said intensity: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/08...

  • NateMan

He takes everything very seriously, that's for sure. But he's a pretty good guy too, it seems. His kid went to Hampshire College, where my wife works, and they had a good interaction. Not nearly as snooty as many of the parents dropping their kids off.

  • tamatha_uhmelmahaye

Your wife works at Hampshire, you say? I'm reading this from my cubicle at UMass just down the road.

  • NateMan

HA! Well, I'm reading this about you reading that from my very own cubicle at Umass. :)

  • DeltaJuliet

Sounds like people don't do much work at UMass ;)

  • NateMan

Well, when you work IT, it's all feast or famine. I have lots of time where it's surf the web, or watch little progress bars go across the screen. Though August is killing me with all the departmental moves.

  • Natalie

Hey, we collaborate with UMass. (Lowell and Amherst)

  • tamatha_uhmelmahaye

Shit just got real. Or the world got smaller. Or the inevitable finally happened. Or some such.

  • NateMan

I know. I'm frightened. Hold me.

  • PerpetualIntern

    Yay Pioneer Valley :)
