JGL and Zooey Deschanel Reunite for a New Year's Duet, Melt America's Underpants

Zooy Deschanel:

“I have known Joe Gordon-Levitt for going on 12 years. We first met in the summer of 2000 while doing a tiny movie called Manic, where we bonded over a mutual appreciation for Harry Nilsson and Nina Simone and I have been lucky enough to call him one of my dearest friends ever since. When we did 500 Days of Summer 8 years later, we spent every lunch hour dancing to Marvin Gaye in the hair and make up trailer; we had loads of fun. I hope to do a thousand more movies with him because he’s simply the best. But in the meantime, we made a little New Year’s duet for all of you! The original by Nancy Wilson. ENJOY!”

Feel your underdrawers liquify, folks. Doesn’t it feel good?

That was adorable

Heart melting, really.

So I tried posting a comment and it failed because I broke one of the rules. When the hell did that start?

Posted by: APOCooter at December 29, 2011 2:34 PM

1. What has Nancy Wilson got to do with anything? This song is originally from the 40s.
2. I want to like Zooey D's singing, I really do, but she is always ever so slightly flat, and it is annoying.
3. Does anyone else fear that JGL may be batting for the other team? Probably just me, huh.

Posted by: Samantha at December 29, 2011 2:45 PM

The shrug/grinny/cutenado (yes, it's a tornado made of cute) at 2:11 by mr. jgl is giving me the vapors.

Posted by: countfosco at December 29, 2011 2:57 PM

Huh. So they're both southpaws? What're the odds?

That was cute and all that, but what the hell is she doing with her lip? Zooey does Elvis?

Posted by: NateS1973 at December 29, 2011 2:57 PM

love. it.

Posted by: mswas at December 29, 2011 3:04 PM

oh gosh... i've been a bit tired of the whole "quirky brunette" thing. i even call it the "zooey daschnel effect". and quirky brunettes strumming ukuleles has been so played out. but this... maybe i'm ok with 2 quirky brunettes?

yeah, i can't hate this. dammit.

Posted by: glittergirl at December 29, 2011 3:44 PM

Huh. So they're both southpaws? What're the odds?

First off, there is no such thing as playing guitar "left-handed". It takes two hands to play the guitar, and if you're playing "right-handed" with a pick, one could argue that the left hand has the tougher job (well, that depends on a lot). Technically, there are "left-handed" and "right-handed" guitars, but you can't surmise which hand someone is likely to favor for writing or throwing a ball based on how they hold a guitar. But I digress...

That's what I noticed first. But it's just too unlikely, right? I suspect that the image is flipped. I watched the whole video looking for clues. Here's what I came up with:

1) A precious few times the head of Zooey's ukulele can be seen. It looks as though the letter farthest to the right is leaning to the left. It's not impossible that this is the case, but most guitars/ukuleles that I've seen with writing will have it leaning to the right (as left-to-write languages would be written).

2) JGL's jacket adornment is on the right breast. The few times I've had something like that on a jacket I believe it has always been on the left side. I don't know if that is a boutonniere, but Wikipedia claims that those are "worn pushed through the lapel buttonhole (on the left, the same side as a pocket handkerchief)". Of course, I wouldn't put it past JGL to go against conventions.

3) I should've just enjoyed watching the video and not hunted for clues about whether they play guitar with that orientation because a simple search would reveal the answer. Search "zooey deschanel guitar" and it's plain to see that she holds the neck of a guitar in her left hand and not her right hand. Same thing with a JGL search. I declare this image horizontally flipped*!

I made that much harder than it had to be.

* - I'd also like to horizontally flip Zooey Deschanel, but that is another story.

That was rather flippant of you, pissant.

Posted by: Bert at December 29, 2011 4:33 PM

Samantha, the song was written in the 40s, but one of the better known covers was released in 1963 by Nancy Wilson, a jazz singer who is well worth checking out. I think this version is based on her arrangement.

Posted by: gelis at December 29, 2011 4:43 PM

I've grown a little weary of her schtick, and though I LOVE JGL as an actor, I'm kinda tired of him singing (he's really not any good). Having said that, these two have charm to spare, and the video is pretty great.

Posted by: jimbob at December 29, 2011 4:45 PM

You know, I heard there was a JGL/Zooey Daschnel sex tape out there...THANKS DUSTIN!!

Posted by: Kenny G. at December 29, 2011 6:30 PM

His voice makes me think of Kermit. It doesn't make me like him less, but I don't need him to be a singer too.

Posted by: Anne At Large at December 29, 2011 6:40 PM

@pissant, JGL is wearing a red circle pin that's the logo for his website/endeavor hitrecord.org. (As in, the symbol on the record button). All of the pictures I've found of him wearing it show it on his left side, so there's some support to your horizontal flip theory.

Posted by: PollyQ at December 29, 2011 7:05 PM

Yes. That is sweet. I think my teeth are starting to fall out.

Posted by: MRod at December 29, 2011 7:17 PM

Additional support for pissant: the sheet music in the background shows the front cover of the book, but the binding is on the right; the binding would be on the left for that company's sheet music.

Emily is the hot Deschanel. The ONLY hot Deschanel.

I will brook no dissent.

Posted by: , at December 30, 2011 1:39 AM

, , why do you attempt to resist the hotness of the sisters Deschanel? Emily is plenty hot on her own. There is enough hotness to go around. Some of the hotness comes in the form of manically wide-eyes, strangely gummy-looking skin, eternal pouting, an affected voice, contrived movements, and an affinity for getting on every nerve everywhere, and, more importantly, SOME OF IT DOES NOT.

Oh yes. I am dissenting. Brook it.

Now I have an ice cream headache. Cuteness Overload.

Posted by: cinekat at December 30, 2011 4:05 AM

Please tell me that they are doing it, or at least have done it because those googly eyes for eachother are just too much for me.

Posted by: daria at December 30, 2011 9:14 AM

Too bad she got a nose job last year for network tv; takes away quite a bit of her uniqueness.

Posted by: shame at December 30, 2011 10:21 AM

The whole time, I'm thinking... "Nancy Wilson of Heart?.
This doesn't sound like a rock ballad."

What *am* I doing NYE, indeed. [sigh]

Posted by: Ms MoMo at December 30, 2011 11:34 AM

I was thinking Nancy Wilson of Heart also. :) Thx for the explanation, gelis. I stand by the other comments, though.

Posted by: Samantha at December 30, 2011 11:43 AM

I didn't need to turn the sound up on this one. The images of the JGL and Zooey smiling at each other needed nothing else.

Posted by: NeoCleo at December 30, 2011 2:53 PM

Holy shit, I didn't check this when I got home last night. Thanks to all who added more evidence to what I'd already put out there. I think we can consider this one solved.

God dammit, we are a cool group of people!

Posted by: pissant at December 30, 2011 7:28 PM

Honestly, she annoys me to death and his association with her deflates his hotness.

Posted by: stump at December 30, 2011 9:27 PM

BiblioGeek,

I've seen their shows.

That is all.

Posted by: , at December 31, 2011 10:00 AM

I can't deal with her either. The big eyes of death and the not-so-cute cuteness and quirk make me go a big rubbery one.

Posted by: Protoguy at January 2, 2012 1:42 AM

Guys...the picture is flipped because they recorded this video using a Mac.
