Incontrovertible Video Evidence that Taran Killam Is the Best Thing to Happen to "SNL" in 2011

Oh, sure: “Saturday Night Live” hasn’t been good in years. That’s what the MEDIA wants you to believe, anyway. The reality is, it’s as good — give or take — as it’s ever been, which is to say: Spotty as hell. Go back. Rewatch the Eddie Murphy years. Or the Dana Carvey years. Or the Adam Sandler or the Will Ferrell years. There are a few memorable episodes, some great skits, and a whole lot of filler, same as it ever was. But in a decade’s time, we may be calling this era the Taran Killam era, that is, if we remember how to spell his name without looking it up every single goddamn time (seriously, Taran: Get a real name). He, along with Bill Hader, have been the highlights of this season, and Killam — who was also in last week’s “Community” — is a consistent bright spot even in bad skits.

But Taran is not just good on the show, he’s also good behind the scenes, as this video reveals. It’s Killam doing his best impression of a Robyn video. In the writer’s room. At 4:30 a.m. And it’s wicked spot-on.

Taran Killiam is married to Cobie Smulders and they named their kid Shaelyn Cado Killiam.
Weird names. Amazing people.

The Merryville Brothers sketch with Taran, Hader and Jim Carrey...brilliant.

I think I died when the "strobe lights" came in.

I catch SNL every now and again, and, you know what? It's not actually bad, it's actually really funny quite frequently. They got the crappy skits sure, but most of the time, it is spot on funny. Sorry to give it credit, but I think it has improved minimally for some reason this past year.

I love that the first comment on this video spells his name wrong. That's what a silly name'll do for ya!

I stand by my sentiment that Bobby Moynihan is actually hilarious and completely underutilized.

Posted by: Nonanonymous at December 12, 2011 8:22 PM

The guy creeps me out and not just because of the Merryville thing. He is funny though.

Posted by: Protoguy at December 12, 2011 8:52 PM

Shit! I'm a big fan, honest. But I always think Killian. And I was so focused on the M that I added an I.

Cocaine is a hell of a drug.

He is a better dancer than the truly awful Robyn

Posted by: Sean at December 12, 2011 10:11 PM

so this is what they're doing instead of working on their skits or you know, sleep so they don't mess up their lines (i'm looking at you Bayer).

Jimmy, the overly touchy orderly!

My god...I really feel like weeping for the state of comedy in America every time I see anything related to SNL. Even during its "glory" years, it wasn't that great.

Posted by: Diablo at December 12, 2011 11:54 PM

He was fantastic on MadTV,he made a great Justin Timberlake. Makes me happy to see him on TV again.
Now if only Lorne would beg Debra Wilson and Bobby Lee to join the show...

SNL is still funny, but it's odd that a show based in New York could be so non-diverse. Then again, the show's cast does represent it's main audience. Huge sigh.

Posted by: Case Crum at December 13, 2011 1:58 AM

I wonder if you ever said "In Living Color" was non-diverse, Case Crum? Or the George Lopez show? Lorne Michaels is not a fool or a racist. Perhaps he's choosing the funniest people who can function in that difficult environment?

Posted by: slider at December 13, 2011 8:24 AM

Holy shit Slider, you never heard how or why "In Living Color" was created? Damon Wayans, before he and his brother created "In Living Color" intentionally got fired because, like the majority of minority actors in SNL's history, he got sick of getting few parts and doing degrading, minstrel characters.

But no...your right...you get more than one token minority in a group of white people and its just not funny.

Jesus, thank you for saying that. Seriously, you wanna know how old that person you've been chatting online with really is? Casually slip "What's your favorite SNL cast?" into the conversation. Take whatever they say, look up when most of the people were on the show, and find a year nicely in the middle of all of that. The person you are talking to was approximately 13 years old that year.

For 99.999% of people "when SNL was actually funny" means when they first started watching it.

Well, that's just patently false...

Posted by: pissant at December 13, 2011 10:13 AM

SNL is not as good now as it ever was...and the problem is that they have not adequately adapted to this generation. The show didn't run on 30+ years of success based off the opinion of 13 year olds. So please, stop pretending like SNL is still great. It's not. It hasn't been since Tina Fey left as head writer.

Posted by: Littlejon2001 at December 13, 2011 12:11 PM

That video was hilarious, though my favorite part was Bobby Moynihan's deadpan the whole way through.

Posted by: ChristianH at December 13, 2011 4:34 PM

I think this is incontrovertible proof of why the show isn't funny. The cast sits around in a room amusing themselves and then puts it on the show and wonders why nobody else finds it funny.

Posted by: Dave Frankel at December 13, 2011 4:40 PM

He was on Mad TV and joined SNL in 2010. This dues been funny for a while and if you're just finding that out you are late to the party my friend. I'm not a trendy douche bag, but I follow comedy and this guy has been around for a while. Get with it. POINTLESS ARTICLE.

"Blah blah blah, SNL is terrible, wah-wah comedy so sad, blepbloopblleerrrgghghgh me better than you for not likey dumbo show, poopadoopdoop my penis."

-This is what every negative comment in every SNL recap thread sounds like in my head.

"But you guuyyyyyyys!!!"

-This is me.

This web page is somewhat captivating. I am delightful I discovered it since I learned some ideas these days. Preserve blogging.

I just realized this guy is "Jimmy the overly touchy orderly" from Scrubs season 8. That made my whole day.

Posted by: AngelArm45 at December 14, 2011 8:31 PM

Comedy is subjective. Only a truly arrogant person would presume to tell people that what they consider to be funny is, in fact, not funny. "pissant", I'm talking to you.
