Goodbye Sweet Prince: John Oliver Tearfully Bids Farewell to 'The Daily Show'

By Dustin Rowles | Videos | December 20, 2013 | Comments ()

After seven and a half years on The Daily Show, including a stint last summer in which he substituted for Jon Stewart in the anchor chair, England’s fake-news comedy prince, John Oliver, appeared in his final episode last night. Oliver will be headed to HBO this summer with his own show.

Apparently, as you can see in the video below, Jon Stewart and John Oliver worked on a (lame) bit for much of yesterday that they had planned run as Oliver’s final segment, but Stewart surprised him by scrapping it and running a retrospective of much of Oliver’s best work over the years at The Daily Show. By the end of it, the studio audience was on their feet, and John Oliver was in tears.

It’s a little misty in here.

And not available in my country ... as usual will have to wait until someone puts it on Youtube. In the meantime, going to listen to the Bugle ...

Stephen Colbert, John Oliver......Stewie's gonna have to raid the fake news comedy bin for some new talent.

  • e jerry powell

Nah, he'll just go to UCB in Chelsea. Where do you think Jessica Williams came from?

England’s fake-news comedy prince, John Oliver

All respect to Oliver, but that title belongs to Chris Morris.

Enjoyed the progression of Oliver's reaction from "Committed to the bit" to "What the fuck is my boss doing?" to "Something isn't right" to "Oh fuck"

Looking forward to the new show.

This really hit me hard. I didn't realize how much I'll miss John Oliver on the Daily Show. I was really hoping he would take over hosting. I love that guy.

  • Pants-are-a-must

I basically started crying once the Mary Poppins singing started, because that is seriously one of the my most favorite things The Daily Show has ever done. Ta, sweet geeky prince of awesome, and see you on HBO.

  • koko temur

Oh, good. Can you please for the love of, something, remind me the episode its from?! Thanks.

    God, you are good. Thanks!!
How about that "all correspodents have boners"? last one, promise.

  • Pants-are-a-must

That one I have no idea, though I remember seeing it.

  • koko temur

Me to. And i remember loving it. No recollection of what was it about. It ended with sam b having one too. Dont feel like googling "daily show correspondents + boner" though.

  • LizLemon

It might have been around hurricane Sandy, i remember it having to do with reporters obsessions over being out in the storm and getting off on it.

  • JJ

They were Rick Perry-related joy boners on Nov 10th, 2011. There were three correspondents in the segment: Wyatt Cenac, John Oliver, and... uuhhh... who was the third... oops...

  • e jerry powell

My God, JJ, you're getting as OCD as I am about TV.

  • pomeroy

For the Carlos Danger dance alone, he's my favorite.

  • Al

I don't even care for John Oliver and I got a little misty.

  • NateMan

What genuine friendship and kindness between them. Very great to see this.

  • We'll still have The Bugle and the Fuckulogies

  • emmalita

A really well done segment. I hope TDS will air some best of John Oliver episodes during the break, because John has a special gift for getting crazy people to speak their mind on camera. If not, I'll just go to YouTube and search "best of John Oliver."

  • fluff_fluff

I'll be listening to years-old Bugles and sobbing gently all day.

Can i console you with 14 minutes compilation of all the times he sang on the bugle, ever? i didnt make it, but i listen to this on particulary awful mornings.

It has a part 2 somewhere on soundcloud too.

  • Interestingly enough, I'll be eating years-old Bugles and doing the same thing.

  • e jerry powell

Bugles, like Corn Chex, are immortal.
