"Game of Thrones'" Jack Gleeson Is a Better Actor In GIF Form than in Reality

By Dustin Rowles | Videos | May 28, 2013 | Comments ()

GQ ran an interview with Jack Gleeson, who plays Joffrey on "Game of Thrones," a few weeks ago, and while there's not a tremendous amount of insight in the interview, it's notable for two things. First, he thinks that Rutger Hauer in Blade Runner is the best all-time villain, but because of his accent, it sounds like he's saying Rutger hooer, and I laugh every single time I listen to it (it's in the first 10 seconds. You should listen, if you're sense of humor falls below the 10th grade level).

Second of all, the interview gave us this GIF set (via Reddit), which is all the justification the interview needs, especially since I find that Jack Gleeson is a much better actor in GIF form than in reality.

And that's actresssin'!

I really feel bad for this actor. He absolutely KILLS at his job and all he does is get snarky internet posts as a reward. From this interview I got that he's just a normal dude who's still traumatized by FernGully. Leave Gleeson Alone... because he's already a fantastic actor, but who might quite if everyone keeps giving him shit for PLAYING a FICTIONAL douche on TV.

  • Scorptilicus

I don't know, gifs don't give us that resigned sigh the Evil Sunny Commenter makes.

  • I think he's a fantastic actor. The little bit in the latest episode, when he sauntered up to Sansa with a little swagger and then took Tyrion's foot stool, made me hate Joff even more.

  • I know I am just repeating the sentiment here, but I have NEVER hated a character as much as Joffrey. Every scene Joffrey is in, makes me cringe.

  • John W

If I could I'd hand him an Emmy I would. He'll go down as one of the best villains in TV history.

  • wendy

am i alone in thinking this kid is adorable?

  • gonewithtwins

No you are not. Especially after the Ferngully reference. Tim Curry ftw!

I would give this kid all the awards.

  • wendy

the ferngully reference is what clinched it for me too.

  • Conor

It's not the accent that's causing that, he just doesn't know the correct pronunciation.

I know, because I've pretty much the same accent and I don't say it like a goon.

    Well, I don't think I do. Dammit.

  • Fabius_Maximus

If you're not from Limerick, you're quite safe.

  • Does anyone think he'll have a career after GoT? I understand he's actually a decent guy, but I want to bitch slap him every time I see him on screen or in print.

  • If he plays his cards right he could have a long career of playing awesome psychos. Like John Malkovich or Christopher Walken.

  • aquillia

I read an interview somewhere that said he wants to be an academic with a PhD in philosophy. Bless.

  • annie

Or in Hebrew. And he recently graduated or received a really intense, high academic honor for... something. It sounded impressive when I read it.

  • BWeaves

Oh, thank Godtopus! Good for him.

  • BWeaves

I was going to say that if the kid was smart, he'd take a couple years off and go to college, then come back to acting when he's got a little more maturity in his face. Then I looked him up. He's 21, already, and 5' 7" tall.

Maybe if he completely changes his hair, goes for a beard and some glasses, and an acting part that's a bit modern? Basically, as long as he doesn't look like himself, people won't immediately think of Joffrey.

  • Sara_Tonin00

So it'll be nice that he has the tv $$ to sustain him while he lives his academic life.

He's in the Daniel Radcliffe mode of British actors. And the Robert Pattinson school of pasty-attractiveness.

  • PaddyDog

He is already attending Trinity College, Dublin (which is a really good university and not one like Yale that you get into just for being famous) and was made a "scholar" of the uni which means he demonstrated exceptional knowledge of his subject.

  • musegal

Although the GIFs and the memes are brilliant, I think Jack Gleeson must be an amazing actor. Why else would we all hate Joffrey so much?

  • Maguita NYC

The thought of that smirk on his face makes me want to smack him so badly. And that is a good thing for an actor playing despicable.

Another surprisingly despicable offspring on HBO was Spartacus' little rapist Crassus. I hated that kid so much, and felt disturbing glee when he finally got killed. Although if you ask me, he did not get killed often enough to my satisfaction.

  • Artemis

Even more impressive to me is that I haven't gotten sick of Joffrey yet. It's really difficult to play a character that is loathsome every single second he's on screen without the audience getting tired of it, but every episode he finds whole new ways to make me want to punch him.

  • IngridToday

He definitely doesn't get enough credit for Joffrey. He's killing it at showing how childishly ill tempered and blood thirsty Joffrey his, but, also how cowardly.

I loved his scene with Tywin as he tries to keep his authoritative attitude while casually cowering back into the Iron Throne.

  • with_club_sauce

Agreed. He kills it every time he's on screen.

  • zeke_the_pig

For better or worse the kid really does have a remarkable face.

...Better when we need a villain.

...Worse when he needs to just live his life I suppose.

  • aquillia

What I don't understand is how no one talks about how unbelievably awesome it is that he's wearing a t-shirt with freaking Latin Grammar on it in a DQ interview. He should be considered a god amongst nerds.

  • I WANT that shirt so much.

  • cruzzercruz

I didn't know Dairy Queen did interviews.

  • Fabius_Maximus

    It's short for "dick".

  • aquillia

Clearly my mind is in a special place.
