You Will Hear Only the Numbers Counting Down

After the success of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium series (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, etc.), one can hardly blame booksellers or filmmakers for running back to Sweden. The land of beautiful people, hot accents (Skarsgård!), pancakes and meatballs also seems to be a hotbed of thrillers (Three Seconds) just itching to be translated to film.

Lasse Hallström (Chocolat, The Cider House Rules, The Shipping News, My Life as a Dog) will be taking on the Lars Kepler best-selling thriller, The Hypnotist. The book follows Detective Joona Linna investigating a triple homicide. After witnessing the murder of his family, the only survivor — a young boy — is so traumatized he cannot recount what happened. A renowned and retired psychologist is convinced to help; he agrees to hypnotize the boy to search his subconscious for clues. The story is said to be filled with unexpected twists and turns and the boy’s sessions lead to “terrifying consequences.”

The Hypnotist is set to hit U.S. bookstores this year, but if you don’t want to wait, it’s available for the Kindle on Amazon UK. (Interestingly, Lars Kepler is actually a pseudonym for two writers, Alexandra and Alexander Ahndoril — header pic.) Here’s a little teaser:

Hallström will be joined by What’s Eating Gilbert Grape producer, Bertil Ohlsson, along with Borje Hansson and Peter Possne. The film is expected to be released in Sweden this year.

Well, that is a might purdy writer couple, if I do say so myself. And the book sounds pretty good to boot!

Not go-out-and-buy-a-Kindle-good-sounding, but, y'know, good.

This looks pretty cool. Interestingly enough, I just finished the book In The Woods by Tana French in which three kids disappear, and one shows up alive, covered in blood, and completely unable to remember what happened. He refuses the hypnosis idea though. This kind of seems like the flip side to that story, and right up my alley.

Don't bother with the book. The story might work on film, but the book is full of insufferable characters who make idiotic decisions.

Even Stevens, Into the Woods was AWESOME. Have you read her other book, The Likeness? It takes place first, and focuses on the female detective (Cassie?) going undercover as the murder victim she's investigating. Very, very creepy & cool.

no I haven't, I have a couple of other library books to get through first, but it is definitely going on my list, I LOVED Into the Woods. Glad to hear The Likeness is good too because I love Cassie's character.
