sons-of-anarchy-108.jpg

On network television, if a show doesn’t find its audience quickly, the show is shit-canned. What’s great about off-network cable television, however, is that the networks have enough faith in their shows to believe — thanks to DVD, Netflix, and iTunes — that quality programming will eventually find an audience. Look at “The Wire”: Hardly anyone watched that during its initial run, but I don’t know of very many intelligent television viewers who haven’t seen it by now. Likewise, both “Breaking Bad,” and “Mad Men,” were slow to find an audience, but they both seemed to make huge ratings increases between their second and third years, and those audiences continue to grow, as more and more viewers catch up to it on DVD.

I feel fairly confident that “Sons of Anarchy” is another one of those shows that has benefited from the long delay between seasons, as I’m certain that the show has found a much larger audience during its hiatus. It’s gained myself, for one. There’s been a lot of buzz, and a lot of anticipation for season three, thanks in some part to a devastating cliffhanger finale that ended with Jax’s son, Abel, being kidnapped, Gemma on the lam, and poor Half Sack dead, which more or less negated the other loose ends that were tied up when SAMCRO dealt with their white supremacy problem.

The season three premiere started out slowly: Jax was comatose from the grief of losing his son, and only when SAMCRA got a small lead on Cameron could he shake out of it, only to attempt to dump Tara, reasoning that he was no good for her. A season ago, Tara might have taken the opportunity; she might have cut loose. But now she’s mini-Gemma. She’s part of the family, and the grief that she felt as the kidnapping of Abel and the stabbing of Half Sack inhered her into that family. That was her grief, too, and through it, she more than earned her spot. “We don’t know who we are until we’re connected to someone else,” Tara tells Jax, and it’s that connection she’s made with Jax and SAMCRO that’s helped to define her, and it’s Jax’s connection to his own son that will likely define his role as heir apparent.

Speaking of that, if the season progresses as it looks to be progressing, and if the kidnapping of Abel has reconciled Clay and Jax, at least for the moment, I am going to miss that relationship dynamic. The political maneuvering of the two, and their attempts to undermine each other, were the highlights of last season. In the opening episode, aside from the fact that Gemma doesn’t know about Abel’s kidnapping, there are not yet any huge secrets weighing on the principal cast members, and it was the heaviness of those burdens that propelled much of last season’s narrative.

Speaking of Gemma: She’s not someone you can keep in hiding. After her amazing, Emmy-snubbing television tour de force last year as a rape survivor, I wasn’t sure how Kurt Sutter was going to be able to capitalize again. He’s definitely put her in a situation — now shacked up with her Alzheimer’s shell of a father (the brilliant Hal Holbrook) — that will take advantage of her actressin’ talents, but I’m not sure I’m thrilled with the way that subplot plays into the main narrative. I like it when Gemma plays a central role in SAMCRO as the hard-asses matriarchal mediator; I don’t like her outside of the main action.

Much of last night’s episode was spent setting up the new dynamic, basically staging the characters for the season to come. It wasn’t until the last few minutes that Sutter pulled out the big motherfucking guns and set up the major event, the fallout of which will likely drive this season’s narrative. Cameron has indeed taken Abel to Belfast, which means that “SoA” will be spending some time in Ireland this season (as Sutter promised during the hiatus). The drive-by at Half Sack’s funeral, though: There’s only so many ways you can say holy shit. I tested every variation last night. I’m sad to see the demise of Deputy Chief David Hale — he was an asshole, but he was well intentioned, and I appreciated the moral compass he brought to the Charming police department. What it means for his brother’s mayoral run, I have no idea. It probably does mean that Chief Wayne Unser takes back the sheriff’s role, and maybe in a season where there are already enough villains — Cameron, the drive-by shooters, and Agent June Stahl (Ally Walker, whose plastic surgery has gotten way out of hand) — maybe it’s good that SAMCRO has an strong ally in the Charming police.

More importantly, after spending much of the episode comatose, gritting his teeth, staring blankly, and sullen, the reaction that the shooting provoked in Jax was not only welcome but necessary. It forced him into action and established him, once again, as a real force in SAMCRO. But Jesus Christ: I haven’t seen a pavement stomping that brutal since American History X. I had to briefly look away.

All in all, the premiere developed into a powerful season opener, creating a new enemy, setting the stage for delving into the Irish mythology of SAMCRO and a season-long arc in which Abel is tracked down. It also broke Jax out of his shell, and — for better or worse — sidelined Gemma with a Lifetime movie subplot that will likely be handled well by the sure-handed Kurt Sutter. I’m certainly looking forward to next week’s ep, although I do hope that in the episodes to come, the tension on the inside of SAMCRO is as fierce as those outside forces because “Sons of Anarchy” is best when it has to fight the war on two fronts: Internal and external. And, because he’s my favorite character, I hope they find a compelling side story for Opie.

I love Opie.

Solid season opener for sure. As far as a subplot for Opie...wasn't that his girlfriend's son that was shot in the drive-by? I have a feeling that's going to lead somewhere for him. I was crushed to see what happened to Hale...you are right about him. He's obviously on the opposite side of SAMCRO but he was a character you couldn't root against too hard. I don't think Gemma will be sidelined for long...at least judging by the previews of the upcoming episodes.
Thanks for mentioning Ally Walker's face...ugh, no more close ups, please. Honestly...just age, for God's sake. It's got to be better looking than the silly putty look.

Posted by: Whorish Mouth at September 8, 2010 11:26 AM

I love Opie too, if only because that was my nickname growing up.

We going to get an Eloquent Eloquence this week?

Posted by: pastor of muppets at September 8, 2010 11:29 AM

That final scene was just an epic "holy shit!!!" moment. I liked the Hale character, ballsy move killing him off in ep 1 that way.

They really do need subtitles when the Irish characters speak, though, sometimes it takes a few seconds to process that accent.

Those last five minutes were WOW. I'll miss Hale, he was a good adversary for Samcro since his main interest was maintaining Charming.

Loved the Jax/Tara, Clay/Tara, Jax/Piney scenes in particular as well. Charlie Hunnam & Maggie Siff really shined last night.

I also look forward to seeing more of Happy & Kozick since they patched into Samcro.

RIP, Half-Sack. Hope you're reunited with your elephant nut in heaven.

I'm hoping we get a lot more of Paula Malcolmson. We only had two lines from her at the very end in the Belfast scene. She was brilliant in Deadwood and perfect in this show so fingers-crossed. And she's actually from Belfast so she can show them all how not to butcher the accent like they did last season.

Tara's story line is bothering me. She's part of a criminal gang, a kidnapping investigation and at least tangentially tied to a murder investigation and she's still doing operations at the hospital? Wouldn't she be suspended pending an enquiry by now?

Posted by: PaddyDog at September 8, 2010 11:45 AM

I don't believe for a moment that the tension between Jax and Clay will stand down for long - as evidenced by Clay trying to push Jax into action at the funeral. They may be working together toward recovering Abel, but their issues run deep. And as Perlman himself has said, he thinks the show will follow the structure of Hamlet to the end.
Add me to the list of those devastated by Hale being killed. It was nice to watch him go from goody-two shoes to being able to see shades of grey.

As for Gemma's predicament, I'd like to see her turn things around on Stahl. That bitch has to get her comeuppance sooner or later, and it's sure to be worse than a face smash.

Posted by: Cindy at September 8, 2010 11:46 AM

Paddy, Tara beat the shit out of that lady at the hospital who had an investigation going - told her to drop it or she'd kill her.

But I don't know what being a witness to those investigations has to do with her doing her job?

Posted by: Cindy at September 8, 2010 11:49 AM

I too, said Holy Shit in all possible forms last night. I was starting to get disappointed in the episode until the van pulled up. Wow, that was a good opener.

I like the bad plastic surgery on Stahl. It makes it seem like she's still fucked up from when Otto smashed her face.

Opie's (my favorite, too)girlfriend's kid did get shot so I think he'll definitely have some motivation this season.

Did anyone else cringe at Hale's brother's hair? I thought his toupee was bad LAST season.

Posted by: Paul at September 8, 2010 12:06 PM

Cindy:

Yeah. I remember that beat down and did you notice that the same lady saw her having her panic attack outside the OR last night?

Re doing her job, I'm actually on the board of an organization that deals with certification of physicians and simply her involvement with SAMCRO (which the ATF and FBI would have reported by now) would open up an ethics investigation immediately.

Posted by: PaddyDog at September 8, 2010 12:07 PM

Ahhh I'm so glad you guys are recapping this season!

Last night was the first time I actually LIKED Tara. I always felt like she's spent the last two seasons looking pissed off, acting pissed off and I felt like Maggie Siff finally, finally injected some interesting passion into her. It seemed like she was less of a wooden character and more fleshed out. I'm really glad about that.

As for Jax, I love love LOVE brooding, tortured characters and Charlie Hunnam pulls that off effortless. And he's just fucking gorgeous. I'm really interested in seeing how his Dad's manifesto comes into play this season. I also loved how Clay had to refrain from telling Gemma (who I looooove) about Abel. All of these guys are really powerful actors.

Sigh, I'm gonna be an emotional wreck for the next twelve weeks. So fucking excited!!!

Posted by: grace b at September 8, 2010 12:08 PM

Grace - I'm with you on the moment between Clay and Gemma on the phone. I thought Perlman pulled off the conflict between his tortured conscience and protective spouse pretty well there.

I'm disappointed with the loss of Hale. I really wanted to learn about his background with Jax. The tension and respect between them has always been intriguing and I'd hoped to see some light shed on it this season. I never hated Hale, though. His dispassionate objectivity was a grounding force in the show. The character reminded us that no matter how much we may root for SAMCRO there is still a right way to do things. I thought his objectivity began serving the show even better once he awoke to shades of gray and was willing to help legally when it seemed all hope was lost.

Since season two ended I've wondered if its follow up could be at least as good. The jury is still out, obviously, but at least they're going to keep us on our seats again while we find out :)

Posted by: lubeg at September 8, 2010 12:35 PM

I did see her Paddy - I was waiting to see if she'd do anything (probably went into the loo and had a cackle).

Well now, that's interesting about the affect her association would have. I'd have thought that's some kind of violating her rights thing, no? I mean, watching her to see if she's somehow using her skills illegally (which she has) is one thing, but investigating her merely for associating? I wonder if you have different laws across the pond?

Posted by: Cindy at September 8, 2010 1:25 PM

Whorish Mouth and I both gasped in unison and screamed no when Hale got hit by the van. And I was screaming at the TV for Jax to stop smashing that dude's head before he killed him. Partially because it was so intense, partially because he needs answers as to who the fuck just took a shot at them. Gonna miss Hale...can't wait for the next 12 episodes. Will spend the next 12 weeks preparing for epic levels of TV withdrawal when this season inevitably ends.

Paul...I don't think that was Lyla's son who got shot. Lyla was wearing a black sleeveless t-shirt (saw he shoulder tattoo when she hugged Ope outside the funeral). The woman crying over her son was wearing long gray sleeves under a black shirt...or at least I could SWEAR she was. Also...wouldn't that kid be a little old to be Lyla's boy? He was just a toddler last season.

Posted by: PissBoy at September 8, 2010 1:27 PM

I'm still watching the first season on Netflix for the first time, so I didn't read this post, but just felt the need to comment that I LOVE this show and can't believe I've been missing out on it for all this time. It is so well done and so hard to turn away from!

Posted by: Katie at September 8, 2010 1:37 PM

Damn, I think he WAS a lot younger last season. Now I don't know and can't go re-watch the episode for 5 more hours. Crap.

Posted by: Paul at September 8, 2010 1:37 PM

Cindy:

The board I am on is actually here in the US. State medical licensing boards vary in terms of what they will consider a basis for an investigation, but in California, her close association with a gang known to be involved in interstate trafficking of drugs would be a huge red flag since she has access to controlled substances as a part of her job. I'm not saying she could be proven to have done something wrong but there would be some sort of enquiry.

Posted by: PaddyDog at September 8, 2010 1:49 PM

Agree with Pissboy--I rewound that shot a couple of times, because at first I was like, "Oh FUCK no, Opie didn't just lose someone else close to him in a drive-by!"

The woman has shorter hair than Lyla, and is wearing different clothing. It scared the shit out of me for a few seconds, though. Opie does NOT deserve that shit.

Posted by: Meggrs at September 8, 2010 1:56 PM

Ummm... is anyone going to mention Gemma stabbing that dude in the crotch?

Posted by: squeeziee at September 8, 2010 2:38 PM

Ummm... I was trying to FORGET about it, squeeziee.

Posted by: lubeg at September 8, 2010 2:53 PM

Very interesting Paddy. How did I not know you were here? Now that's the real question.

Posted by: Cindy at September 8, 2010 2:57 PM

Damn, brooding Jax, I like. When I look at Charlie Hunnam and remember him as Nathan in Queer As Folk and Lloyd in Undeclared, I marvel at how good an actor he has become.

Tough Tara, still not completely on board but getting there. Conflict between Jax and Clay definitely on back burner because of kidnapping but in the end neither of these characters is getting out of Charming alive.

Gemma, Gemma, Gemma, the most interesting, most complex character in the series. Still pissed at Emmy's for that slight, but these are the same folks who didn't give one single Emmy to The Wire in five friggin' seasons.

R.I.P. Half-Sac may you be reunited with the other one in heaven. R.I.P. Hale, thought his demise was a little too abrupt and that the character deserved better. I liked the relationship between Jax and Hale and he provided moral grounding for SAMCRO. I think he'll be missed more than people think.

I didn't see the drive by coming. And all the while Jax was trying to blend the shooters head with the pavement, I was screaming, "Don't kill him you idiot. He could provide you with valuable information." But the drive by is just a prelude to the coming violence of this season, it is going to get very, very bloody.

I cannot watch Ally Walker's face, it's like watching a melted candle mouthing words. Actors don't want to age but completely ruining their faces is okay. *SMH*

Oh man, I have to wait until tomorrow to watch it, can't wait!

Posted by: Rachel at September 8, 2010 3:47 PM

Oh...small random noticing last night...

Anyone else notice Opie's neck tattoo? It either said 'Sack' or 'Half-Sack'. Dunno if it's been there for the last 2 seasons or not...but thoguht it was nice.

Posted by: PissBoy at September 8, 2010 4:51 PM

ok, i havent read the recap or the comments yet. i just want to say, i was watching, all slavering, and the screen went dark at an appropriate moment for an episode to end, right after they confront the black gang about the boat, and i was all set to be mad, that they wouldnt give us enough in an epidode, especially after the cliffhanger last season. i was hungry and mad, then before i could turn my player off, the screen lit up, and i checked and realised we are only half way through the episode. dont know where it is going, or whether it lives up, just had to bring this moment on angry, hungry relief to the pajibadock.

i'll check back at the end of the episode and read the recap and comments.

Posted by: idleprimate at September 8, 2010 11:30 PM

Finally got to watch it tonight! I was literally screaming at my tv when the drive by happened. Holy shit I love this show!
Are we sure Hale is dead? I know it looked bad but I would hate to think they killed him off so quickly. He was a nice grey for the show in terms of morality. I love Gemma. She's just awesome and tough and the fact that Katie didn't get an Emmy nod is an insult.
I'm so glad the new season has finally started!

Holy exlposive season opener Batman!

Posted by: idleprimate at September 9, 2010 5:50 AM

Separating Gemma from the club is necessary narratively. SAMCRO has been knocked back on it's heels through the 1,2,3,4 punch of Gemma's framing, Abel's kidnapping, Half-Sack's murder, and now the funeral drive by. Jax isn't going to give a shit about ANYTHING until he gets Abel back so the tension between he and Clay is going to simmer this season. They need each other now more than ever, especially with Gemma on ice. The question is will Jax be able to come back from the darkness when this ends and be able to lead the Club in the steps of his father.

And I say more Deadwood actors need to come to Charming. Hopefully we'll be seeing more of Paula Malcolmson as the season wears on.

Posted by: TylerDFC at September 9, 2010 6:55 AM

I think I've watched too many episodes of Burn Notice, because when Jax was smooshing the drive-by-er's head into the pavement all I could think was, "No, no, no! You need to tie him up, bundle him off to a secluded and highly reinforced safe house and drag whatever info you can out of him with your razor sharp wit!"

And then kill him. Although that ain't Michael Westen's style...

Posted by: Sandra at September 9, 2010 11:12 AM

OK...Although most of you have seen the show already...*SPOILERS*

I think that Hale's brother set up the driveby but didn't plan the brother to get hit. It was just an excuse to clean up or push out the club, as a measure of control. As we saw last season, that is Hale's brother's true motivation.

I think Gemma's father caretaker left the room to call 5-0, to get some reward money. Tig will catch her in the act...

I think Tara's situation with the hospital will come to a head, and she will leave and become Gemma's right hand and take care of Holbrook (looks MUCH worse than Stahl).

Finally I think that Happy will have a bit of storyline, as Bobby and Clay didn't seem to agree with him coming back to Charming.

Posted by: BobaFett at September 9, 2010 2:55 PM

@BobaFett

Wow, I literally had the EXACT same thought process on every single thing you said, particularly re: Hale's Brother and the caretaker ratting.

But seriously, GOD DAMN, what a way to kick off the fall TV schedule. I am SO glad this show is finally back!

Posted by: RedRightAnkle at September 9, 2010 11:22 PM

I just love Opie's story arc. They've taken a LOT of unexpected and heretofore unshown routes with his family, including realistically showing Piney's illnesses and aging, Donna's struggle to keep the family out of the poorhouse, his finding solace with a pretty porn star, and the sad reality that he neglected his kids because something just BROKE in him.

Opie is a sexy bitch.

Posted by: Stacy D at September 11, 2010 4:29 AM

Argh! This post is so frustrating that I just had to comment on it, even though I have only (let myself) read the first two paragraphs. I'm a Scot, and over here in the UK we only saw the season 2 finale a couple of months ago ... so we're probably four or five months from season 3 premiering (we get it on FX). So I just wanted to say: YOU GUYS ARE SO LUCKY!!

ps I have also had to skip all of the season recaps of True Blood season 3, because that isn't on FX over here yet either. The willpower that this requires is extensive... although luckily doesn't preclude looking at pictures of Alexander Skarsgaard :)
