Where is Who?

Briefly: Stephen King? How surprisingly creepy good was he? I’ve seen King act in a few things (Creepshow), and he’s not a particularly good actor, but give him only a few lines and have him do creepy shit? That was some inspired stunt casting, particularly in his character name: Richard Bachman.

Last night’s was a transitional episode; it was filler-y, particularly with the events in Charming, where the episode began with SAMCRO deciding to skip bail and travel to Canada to search for Abel, and ended with SAMCRO finding out that Cameron was dead, and in Belfast. In between, Opie broke up a porn party, SAMCRO had to give up a little of their business to the Chinese in exchange for weapons, and we find out that the city isn’t too fond of the Sons anymore because of their involvement in the death of Hale. Opie and Jax also had a nice moment, and Opie continues to sport the most heartbreaking puppy dog face on television.

The Belfast storyline spun its wheels, but for the addition of Cherry (Taryn Manning, playing Half-Sack’s girlfriend from season one). With Cameron dead, Maureen decides that she’d like to let the Charming charter know about the whereabouts of Abel, and at this point, does anyone understand why the Irish are even holding on to Abel anymore. What’s the end game? Except to get the Charming fellas in Belfast for a travel episode? I’m sure that the uneasy relationship between Father Ashby and Jimmy O will play into it, but right now, it’s difficult to understand the political necessity of keeping Abel (or giving him away to a nice Catholic family). It was good to see Cherry again, though, and to learn that Maureen and John Teller were, at one point, an item. That could present some interesting tension between Maureen and Gemma in a future ep, and Maureen’s husband — the president of the Beflast chapter of the Sons — will likely play into the narrative.

The meat of the episode took place at Nate Maddock’s house, where Nate disappeared, leaving Tara and Gemma to deal with the caretaker. And deal with her, they did. Tara got soft, and let the caretaker’s hands free; the caretaker knocked Tara out, and — in a struggle with Gemma — ended up on the wrong end of a knife in the chest. That’s where Bachman came in, to help Gemma and Tara dispose of the body. How fantastic was it that he took the prayer hands as payment?

Meanwhile, Nate considered putting a bullet in the back of his throat, and it wasn’t until the heart-wrenching scene in which Hal Holbrook has a shotgun to his chin that I remembered that he was married to the recently deceased Dixie Carter, which gave that scene even more resonance. I can’t help but to think, however, that — with Nate headed to a care facility, and Gemma/Tara getting involved in the hunt for Abel — that the stop at the Maddock place was a narrative detour, to give Gemma something to do while she’s on the lam, to give Trig some dark humor moments, and to give Holbrook a chance to appear on the show. I don’t know how, or even if, the death of the caretaker or the fate of Nate, will play into the overall storyline.

But then, Kurt Sutter works in mysterious ways. I’ll give the man the benefit of the doubt.

Damn I just want some action boys! I hope they have a really insane last couple of episodes to make up for this slow dribble of time they have going on. King was good and I like Jax and Clay's interaction. So calm.

Can't wait for next week of course!

Sons of Anarchy? Pssh! I just got done jerking off to Mike Chang from Glee 3 or 4 times...can't remember...it's all just a blur of masculine, lean Asian abs and talent.

Yeah. Great television be damned motherfuckers. If there are no new pictures of the silent, Asian wonder fantasy man on Google Image in the next 5 minutes, my hanging gardens just might explode.

Nate considered putting a bullet in the back of his throat, and it wasn’t until the heart-wrenching scene in which Hal Holbrook has a shotgun to his chin

I'm pretty sure that wasn't a shotgun. In fact, I'm positive. Were that a shotgun I don't think Tig would have a shoulder anymore. The whole episode (particularly in the scene where he was going to kill himself) I was trying to figure out what kind of gun he had. I'm fairly certain it was just a .22 rifle. I can't think of anything larger that wouldn't have done that much damage to Tig.

Posted by: DeistBrawler at September 22, 2010 9:03 AM

I agree Deist - that was a rifle.

I'm still having a really hard time with Jax's behaviour. Him sitting around the porn party didn't ring true for me, in fact him doing anything but going crazy looking for Abel isn't working. The season opened with him barely able to get up or exist, then he went insane on the dude who fell out of the van and now he's just hanging around? I'm trying to give Sutter the benefit too but let's get a move on here.

Nice typo, Dustin. Now I've got a picture in my head of Trig Palin getting shot while fucking a Guatemalan woman, mixed in with the episode of South Park where Ike was banging his teacher. It's half real, half cartoon...aaaaand now it's turning into a full-on porno. I'll send you the psychiatrist bills.

I totally thought Bachman was going to go for the Hummels.

I thought the same thing last night. King's role was perfect for him. He really is a pretty poor actor (not that he's ever claimed to be otherwise, I'm not trying to insult the man) so the minimal dialogue and simply creepy presence couldn't have come off better.

It DOES feel like Gemma and Tig's story so far has been kind of story filler but then again Sutter has surprised me many times before. A few times already this season.

I was convinced that Jacob Hale had a hand in the drive-by and I'm glad he didn't; that would have been too similar to last season's conflict with Zobel.

After we saw that Jimmy was hiding info about Abel I figured the main arc would be slowly following the trail to Belfast; now they already know they need to go to Belfast and that Jimmy is a lying two-faced prick.

PLEASE. Move these recaps to later in the week, or at least give us a day's grace. I just can't watch everything in real time. Show some mercy for the DVR set.

The King cameo was pretty awesome. I had read that he was going to be on the show but had forgotten all about it.

Hal Holbrook is heartbreaking. He's so good. I'm not sure how much more of the stuff with Gemma's dad there will be, but I like that Tara got brought into it. It was like another reminder for her that if you bring the club into your life, certain unavoidable things (danger, violence) make their way in too.

There is something off about the Abel/Belfast storyline. Why are they holding him still? Are they planning to use him as leverage for something we don't know about yet?

I like my recaps fresh. It's like discussing it around the water cooler, only with a better show instead of some lame Survivor crap everyone else in my office is watching. I loved seeing Stephen King all creepy like. Also, I'd really like to see more naked Opie. He mentioned it, now he needs to bring it.

Loved Stephen King as "the fixer" a la Mike from "Breaking Bad" (& Winston Wolfe, of course).

That said, this season has thus far felt a tad "off" to me. The kidnapping angle isn't really doing it for me and I do hope they resolve it soon. There's no much suspense there anyway as we all know the baby will end up fine. A simple feud after Half-Sack's murder would have sufficed and been more plausible, too.

And I do hope there's some sort of consequences for the Gemma character as well, in the last few episodes she's stabbed a guy after trying to steal his car and detained her father's caregiver which directly led to her death. Yet Gemma seems completely unaffected by these actions as if her goals are all that matter. It makes it difficult to see the character in any kind of favorable light right now. She battled severe PTSD after her vicious rape, I would expect this to be even more of an issue moving forward.

stephen king totally rocked this episode. I didn't even recognise him. I kept watching thinnking where did they dig up this terrifying cadavar that reminds me of stephen king.

pulling out my Total Geek(TM) card from my wallet, I always loved his cameos in his flicks, and I have a special warm place for his role in Creepshow. I just wish I had known it was coming and could have built up nerdly anticipation.

He really has become quite frightening.

"how's the drain on your slop sink?"

Posted by: idleprimate at September 22, 2010 8:04 PM

Oh, Churchy, I see what you did there. Gemma do what Gemma gotta do and she's bad.

Clay puts the puppet club president in the hole and drives around his head and that's necessary. Opie carves up a Mayan and that's for Donna. Jax kills Cohn and that's honor.

I'm not seeing your comment in a favorable light. The essence of Gemma is her ruthless protectiveness. That bitch will eat your children if they say boo to hers. I marvel at her more with each episode. She's teaching Tara the dumbness of her compassion.

I would however like to second the proposal for MORE NAKED OPIE.

Deist, take it from your neighborhood gun dealer...that would be a .22 LR rifle my friend. I only say this because I thought and said to my roomate the exact same thing you did...

I'm with PaddyDog: at least give us a day delay for recaps. I can't watch until Wednesday night. On too late for my up-before-dawn job.

No mention of the Deadwood reunion going on this year? Utter, Trixie, Adams, and now Calamity Jane as the SONS' lawyer. Took me half the episode to figure out who the lawyer was. First I thought it was Flo from the Progressive ads because it did sorta look like her. Then I shouted "Calamity Jane!" so that was pretty cool all by itself. Really hoping for a scene with her and Sheriff Unser for old times sake.

I think the Belfast IRA is using Abel to further drive a wedge between Jimmy and SAMCRO. That is really the only explanation that makes sense. Otherwise, why leave him out to be found where they would know the news of his death is going to spread to Charming?

The only thing that didn't work for me was Opie being at the porn party. They should have known damn well he wasn't going to be able to handle it. Then they were like "Well, that's our Ope!" It was kind of silly.

I loved the look on Gemma's face when King asked if the slop sink had a good drain. Even Tig seemed freaked out. Good stuff.

Posted by: TylerDFC at September 23, 2010 6:16 AM

I think Gemma's behavior is totally consistent with her PTSD. She went through a horrific rape and now psychologically she will strike first at any individual that threatens her safety in any way. I don't think she's capable of differentiating the level of the threat any more.

Also, TylerDFC: I think the Real IRA guys (let's not confuse them with Gerry and the boys) specifically wanted the message of his death to get to Charming. They were saying "he did wrong and we have avenged you". It's all about meting out justice gang-style. If you remember it was when they heard about what really went down that they decided to kill him.

How funny was it that the cleaner took the giant gilded prayer hands as part payment?

Posted by: PaddyDog at September 23, 2010 8:50 AM

And now that Jax & Clay know Jimmy lied about Cameron being in Vancouver there is going to be hell to pay.

Posted by: TylerDFC at September 23, 2010 9:39 AM

Did anyone else find it interesting that Tara was very adamant that Jax never find out about the murdered lady? Not in keeping with the full disclosure rule. Or does that not go both ways?
