TRUE-BLOOD-Season-3-Kristin-Bauer.jpg

Well that was all over the place, Mr. Ball. I know you’re trying to suck us back into the “True Blood” world as quickly as possible, reacquaint us with the characters, but some of us are smarter than we look. We remember most of the people in the past two seasons - we didn’t need for you to incorporate every single character. You could have spent more time concentrating on…say, Eric? I did so enjoy the moments you lingered upon his intoxicating, naked form. Naked forms were de rigueur this hour, along with plenty of God and religious smack-downs and homo-eroticism galore. While there was a good deal to enjoy about “Bad Blood,” there was also a bit too much meandering all over the place.

As season three opens, the chaos from season two carries over as the audience is bounced from character to character, each one reeling in his or her own way. Sookie (Anna Paquin) runs out of the restaurant screaming for Bill, Sam (Sam Trammel) drives off in search of his biological family, Jason (Ryan Kwanten) goes home to let his freak out after having killed Eggs. A devastated Tara (Rutina Wesley) grieves over Eggs’ dead body, Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis) brings comfort and a blanket. Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) finds the flowers Hoyt left at her door, takes a moment to admire them and then drags a body into her house.

Bill (Stephen Moyer) has been kidnapped in his own car and stabbed by a rough bunch of men who tell Bill he can call them the “fuck you crew.” The men feed on Bill and get horny and high and seem to be more interested in each other than whatever their mission with Bill might be. When one of the men suggests another feed a guy in the back seat by spitting blood into his mouth, his response is, “That’s gay,” even as he twiddles his own nipples. Reminds me of football, the manly man’s game…

Sookie spends most of the episode running here and there, trying to get herself and Bill’s disappearance taken seriously by anybody. She doesn’t have much luck and she’s not going to get a lot of sympathy from me either. I don’t know what it is about Anna Paquin, but I don’t find her Sookie very compelling most of the time, the exception being during her more rousing scenes (like last season when she was attacked by Maryann in non-human form and had to be treated by Eric’s doctor).

At Merlotte’s, Arlene (Carrie Preston) relates her dramatic version of events to Sheriff Dearborne (William Sanderson) as Terry (Todd Lowe) consoles cousin Andy (Chris Bauer), who is taking the rap for shooting Eggs. Terry commiserates with Andy over his first kill and assures Andy he’s still a good man, declaring his love for Andy. Tara, who’s ready to throw down with anyone at this point, gets pissed with Arlene for not being more upset over Eggs’ death. (Arlene has her own problems — she’s pregnant.) Andy leaves and pays Jason a visit, tells Jason that he confessed to killing Eggs and they have to get their stories straight. Andy says Sheriff Dearborne is getting old and won’t notice problems with their story as long as they act normal. For Jason, normal means repeating his mantra: “Conscience off, dick on.” Later on, he rounds up a couple of veterinary students and heads home with the girls and his new roommate, Hoyt, but Jason can’t stop picturing the girls with bullet holes in their heads so his mantra’s reversed. And poor Hoyt can’t think of anyone but Jessica, but when he calls her, she’s too caught up in trying figure out what to do with the guy she accidentally killed to be able to respond like she wants.

In what was clearly the best scene this episode, Sookie goes to Fangtasia where she runs into Pam (Kristen Bauer) first. Sookie asks for Eric and Pam says he’s very busy and pretends to discourage her, but Sookie pushes past and goes downstairs to find Eric (Alexander Skarsgård) giving his new dancer a test run. Demonstrating a clear inability to appreciate the fine art of the human form, Sookie questions a fully nude Eric about Bill’s whereabouts. When Eric denies knowing anything about Bill’s disappearance, Sookie wants to blame Bill’s maker, Lorena and asks where she can be found. Eric informs Sookie that he, as sheriff of the area, is duty bound to find Bill. Sookie reminds him that he owes her ten thousand dollars. Afterward, Eric screams and threatens someone over the phone for not having brought Bill to him. Pam tells Eric he’s losing it and needs to call the Queen. Eric wants to know what Pam thinks the Queen will do if she finds out he’s lost the one vampire who knows about their part in selling vampire blood.

The men driving Bill are distracted by their high on vampire blood and Bill is able to snap the driver’s neck. The car crashes and a weak Bill manages to escape. He calls for Jessica who is slumbering with her newly dead friend; Jessica experiences some sort of full body awakening but doesn’t recognize that Bill needs help.

Sam hears a knock at his door: it’s a shirtless Bill asking for a shower and a shirt. (Bill was able to find Sam easily after having infused Sam with his blood.) As the two speak, Bill appears to glamor Sam and invite him in the shower. In a strangely arousing few moments, Sam accepts the invitation and Bill says something about Arkansas’ very hard water. I can’t be the only one fanning myself, but just then the phone starts ringing and Bill tells Sam not to answer and at the moment Bill moves in for a kiss we figure out this is Sam’s dirty dream. The waking call was to advise Sam his biological family is gone, evicted from their last residence, but Sam learns he has a brother who works in town. When Sam meets a Tommy at the auto shop he was directed to, he thinks it’s his brother but the Tommy pretends to be someone else. Sam’s got a little of that bloodhound in him though, so he follows Tommy home from work and checks the mailbox in front of the house. Sure enough, his instinct was right and he’s found his family. I feel confident he’s going to turn tail and run from them real soon though.

Lafayette clears Tara’s head with tequila and pills until her mother, Lettie Mae (Adina Porter) arrives. Lettie Mae brings over a reverend to help Tara see that everything she’s been through was God’s plan to bring her back to her mother. After all the proselytizing, Tara says she needs a shower (me too).

Sookie reports Bill’s disappearance to the the sheriff, but Dearborne isn’t concerned with missing vampires. Pam visits Sookie and delivers an above and beyond payment from Eric, then Pam has some kind of full body shudder that means Eric is calling her. Sookie immediately thinks of Jessica, runs over to the Compton house and asks if Jessica has ever experienced the shudder alert system. Jessica realizes she has and says she also felt sick and may have been drawn to a place. Sookie demands Jessica come with her to try to find it.

Eric enjoys a performance by his new dancer until he’s interrupted by the entrance of vampire Queen Sophie-Ann (Evan Rachel Wood) and the Magister (Zeljko Ivanek). They demand Eric close the club for the night. The Magister is hunting for whomever might be selling V to humans and the Queen and Eric do some poor bluffing through his questions. After the Magister leaves, Eric expresses concern that the Magister might not have believed them and the Queen demands that Eric sell all the blood he has because she needs money. Eric tells her about Bill being missing, but she couldn’t care less.

Pam pays Lafayette a visit at Merlotte’s. She instructs him to sell all his V by tomorrow and when he balks, she gets right up in his grill and purrs threats against his throat. Lafayette gets the message. Meanwhile, Lettie Mae fawns over the reverend until Lafayette returns and asks where Tara is. Lafayette quickly realizes what Tara is up to and attempts to break down the bathroom door as Tara swallows as many pills as she can.

Bill claws his way out of a forest dirt bed. He wanders until he finds a house in the woods and rings the bell. A disoriented elderly woman invites him in; he feeds on her, finds out he’s in Mississippi, then glamors her so she’ll forget he was ever there. But he does leave her with a wad of cash and a story that it’s a gift from her absent son, so he’s not a heartless bastard.

Jessica and Sookie follow Jessica’s nausea until Sookie sees Bill’s overturned car. She and Jessica investigate the vehicle and find a body with a small tattoo. They look up the symbol and find it has something to do with werewolves. Sookie looks excited by the prospect, and I might be too. Just please, let’s not go all Twilight with this shit. If I see one sparkle on Eric’s perfect derriere! Meanwhile out in the woods, Bill himself becomes surrounded by wolves. He bares his fangs and declares a warning that he has already fed.

So in the blink of an hour we’re all caught up on just about everyone in Bon Temps. While I wasn’t thrilled with the over-stuffing of this episode, I was truly excited (in more ways than one) to see my favorite characters back again. No one delivers a line like Lafayette: “Bitch, you and me bridge, it ain’t never gonna muthafuckin’ happen.” Gotta love Alan Ball for weaving social commentary with camp and fantasy. I’m trying to finish up the third book in Charlaine Harris’s series before the next episode so I’ll know what liberties and diversions this season of “True Blood” takes. I can tell you one thing I’m hoping for: more Pam. Closing credits: Beck’s “Bad Blood”

Thank goodness y'all are doing recaps so I have a place to chat about this show. Also, as a programming note, will y'all continue to do recaps on Tuesdays? Because I don't have HBO and so I have to watch it online and even though I stayed up till 2am watching this the other night, I don't think I can keep doing that.

But the episode, yea... It was a grab bag of story arc set-ups. And I get why they did it (we've waited 8 months for cliff hangers to be resolved and they only have 12 or 13 episodes to resolve the story), but it was a little frenzied. But even if the story was a little stop and go the lines and characters were just as balls out (pun) as always.

Pam and Lafayette need their own show on Bravo way before Mercedes and Kurt. Sam's V induced dream sequence makes me think... things... And Queen Sophie was not nearly as obnoxious as she usually is. Plus, nekkid Eric (ignoring the slightly stilted feeling of the scene with him on the phone). And Sookie, God love her, was as obnoxious and self-righteous as always.

And Tara... Someone needs to do her a favor and move her the hell out of Bon Temps.

I'm reading a book behind. So right now I've got "Living Dead in Dallas" going. Reading the books actually makes me appreciate Paquin's performance more. Sookie is a self righteous pain in the ass but comes from being the "freak" and outsider all those years. And, she can always hear what people are thinking if she wants to. I think Paquin keeps all that in mind for her performance because reading the books she is exactly like that on screen.

Pam had the bulk of the great lines this week and I'm glad to see she is on the main cast credits now. Between the Willie Wonka reference, the "Must be because I wear too much pink.", and "Don't know why you had to kill that maenad. She's a terrific decorator." every moment she was on screen was awesome.

I thought the season got off to a banging start. It hasn't been a slow moving show since season 1 so I felt like the frantic set ups were pretty much expected.

The wife brought up something I'll open up for y'all: if Sam has dreams about Bill, and Sookie has dreams about Eric, and it's because they drank the blood, what about all the V users? Are they having dreams about random vampires? If so, why isn't Jason? Any idea on this or is it just a plot hole?

"I'm sorry you fell in love with a serial killer! But really, who here hasn't?!" - best line of the night.

Nice recap, Cindy.

Hey Tyler,

Yea, Sookie in the books isn't a bed of roses, but I always found her a little more tolerable than on the show. But speaking from a perspective of having read book 10, she gets much preachier and obnoxious and yet she has the moments of clarity that make me love her enough to keep reading through her bull shit. It's not that Paquin's terrible, it's just that the character only ever borders on likable. We get it, you were/are an outsider, now get off your damn cross about it.

And last year at Comic Con Alan and Charlaine addressed the V-user sex dream thing. Apparently, when it's given freely by the vamp and directly from the vamp there's a personal connection. With V users, since it's not fresh and not freely given, there's a lack of a bond. Or something. Basically, it boils down to MAGIC & JAZZ HANDS!!! But yea. Also, I think they added the Sam/Bill thing in there since someone specifically asked about it in an interview over the summer and Alan Ball went, "Oh. Oh! I didn't think about that. We'll have to consider that." Also, I love that Sam was totally ok with having a gay sex dream and not all "Oh noes my manhood!" Here's to not-so-secretly hoping that it's not just the ladies who are fluid with their sexuality!

I actually stopped reading the series after book 3 or 4, it just didn’t work for me. Weird but, I really enjoy True Blood.

I know somehow I have Frelled up the time space continuum. Maybe I’m just dreaming all this and the book series is next to my bed…

I'm with you on more Pam. I just adore her. Also, as much nude or semi-nude Eric as possible, please. I noticed that ol' Bill is a little more buff than last season. Can't blame him, what with all the comparisons.

The Arlene pregnancy needs to be a non-issue - fast. As occasional filler, okay, but it can't be a thing or I shall feel compelled to yell at the screen. So there. Also, Tara is allowed to be in freak-out mourning mode for 1.5 more episodes at the most. I'm thinking her self-destructive streak is what leads her to dance with Franklin.

The Queen was not impressive. In fact, her performance for the Magister was so stilted and obvious, I'm surprised he didn't start the torture right there. I don't see the acting chops to make the Queen believable, especially when we saw how to do that last season whenever Godric was on screen.

More wolves, now please. I want my Alcide.

Posted by: Reba at June 15, 2010 10:35 AM

I'm with you TylerDFC - that whole interaction between Tara and Arlene was hilarious. "I hate it when they make it all about race!"

And the Sam/Bill scene made me squirm... In a good way.

I liked Evan Rachel Wood a lot more this episode. At the end of season 2, she just sort of vaguely pissed me off and didn't seem to have any personality. This episode she seemed more in control as an actress. I'm seriously considering making "Hell hath no fury like a vampire queen broke," my new catch phrase. (Either that or anything Pam says ever.) But sweet baby Jesus, her fangs were OUT OF CONTROL. Did anybody else notice how disproportionate they were to the rest of her face and mouth? I couldn't stop staring.

Posted by: DontStopNow at June 15, 2010 10:40 AM

With the whole town getting involved with the mess last season it would have been wrong for the season to open up with almost everyone thinking everything was ok and only focusing on a couple of characters. As you said last season ended with chaos, since the season starts immediately at the conclusion of last season, the chaos should not magically have ended.

Tyler:
As for the dreams, I imagine it has to do with quantity of V. The amount to save a life is much more than what general users would intake. Even when Jason did V the first time and almost OD'd he only had a single small vial. Sookie needed much more to survive the attacks that lead to her dreams about Bill and then Eric, and Sam needed so much of Bill's blood that Bill could barely walk afterward. What I am curious about is weather the small amount allows the V provider to track the human. Is the queen just doing this for the money, or is there some other plan in the works as well.

Posted by: LwoodPDowd at June 15, 2010 10:56 AM

"I am in no mood for lesbian weirdness, Pam."

That made me cackle. Also, when Arlene and Tara were hissing and scratching over Eggs' responsibility, and Arlene said, "Oh why, because of society? Or slavery?" and Terry stepped in with, "Uh, honey..." That almost made me pee.

Lwood, that is an interesting prospect, that the Queen is setting up a tracking system. Although I definitely agree that the sex dream yumminess is based on the direct connection; drinking straight from the tap, you know?

Posted by: Patty O'Green at June 15, 2010 11:13 AM

Oh God I'm gonna be a geek here, but...

LwoodPDowd V's potency (according to the books and the show) is dependent on the vampire (how old s/he is and/or how strong/vicious s/he is) and the person taking the v. A small vile of V ingested is still _a lot_ to the casual user (see, Jason's priopism). Where as, Sookie only had a few drops of Eric's blood that she accidentally ingested will sucking him (ha) free of bullets. But because she took his blood straight from the source and he gave it freely AND he's so old, he's able to affect her dreams. And, in general, a vampire can track a human who has had his/her blood if it was fresh from the source (although there is indication that V users can be tracked, but it's not as exact as the personal bond from direct source V ingestion).

Yea, I had a lot of questions about that whole deal, too. But, after watching the show, reading the books and seeing/reading interviews with Charlaine and Alan, that's sort of how I rationalized it in my head.

But "FUCK YEA, MAGIC!" works just, as well.

Posted by: Kayanne at June 15, 2010 11:18 AM

Pardon my ignorance Kayanne, where did you watch this online? Hulu and hbo.com both don't appear to have these available.

Posted by: Scully at June 15, 2010 11:19 AM

The Comic Con interviews from last year should still be on YouTube, but, you may wanna check out some of the True Blood fansites to see if they're archived/have transcripts. True-blood.net is a great resource, but most of the fan sites are pretty comprehensive/decently organized.

Posted by: Kayanne at June 15, 2010 11:32 AM

i've been away from tv, so maybe i am not properly indoctrinated anymore. i was very excited about this, and then i was embarrassed about the clumsiness of it all. i tried to let go and just let my libido follow sookie and jessica, to no avail.

i got re-livened to the story and characters, and will follow because THERE IS NOTHING ELSE OUT THERE TO WATCH.

but the love wasn't resuscitated.

Posted by: idleprimate at June 15, 2010 12:04 PM

As a relative virgin to True Blood, I wasn't overly impressed with the premier, because it felt like so much happened, but so little was achieved. They could have left out a few things for the next episode.

I get the gist of what's going on, but I'll watch the previous seasons before I get too involved in this one. I can see why Lafayette & Pam are favorites; they really steal the scenes they're in. Anna Paquin still sucks at her accent, although she did look very pretty. That dream scene with Bill & Sam was definitely worth a rewind.

Posted by: Brie at June 15, 2010 12:26 PM

Yay for all the male nudity. And Bill and Sam's scene had me drooling.

But, aside from the salaciousness, it did feel scattered. Hopefully that was just premier-catchup stuff.

Posted by: Drake at June 15, 2010 12:33 PM

Kayanne, yes - recaps will be Tuesdays.

Tyler, I like book Sookie much better than AP's Sookie. And I'll be damned if I understand her accent, she sounds like when one has a bad chest cold and needs to hack up something from one's throat.

Posted by: Cindy at June 15, 2010 1:13 PM

Scully, I often watch the eps at ch131.com or I search for it on sidereel.com

Posted by: Patty O'Green at June 15, 2010 1:20 PM

Book Sookie (fun to say!) is far less of a victim. She's slightly less self-righteous, slightly more vain, far more perceptive, and a lot less shrill. Still has the depth of a watercolor, though.

Posted by: Reba at June 15, 2010 1:51 PM

I too felt like it was frenetic and then by the end nothing spectacular really happened. But just a second of naked/semi naked Eric makes up for all that.

I hope I'm not alone in wishing that Tara would just OD. I'm glad they're introducing a slew of new characters, but in that spirit I feel they should let some old characters go. Or at least give them some growth. Sam and Tara particularly have not advanced at all since season 1. Tara is still whining about how her life is so terrible - I mean, I get it, your bf was shot and your mom is a drunk - but Sookie had to clean up her Gran's blood after discovering her body, fight off numerous psychos, almost was raped by Gabe, and nearly died like 1000 times. Yet she doesn't spend every second of screen time saying how everyone should feel sorry for her. And I LOVE Sam, but he's still just the sad, lonely, "aw shucks" loyal bar owner he always is. I'm hoping this story line with his family will allow his character to grow a little more.

Posted by: ninetwenteetoo at June 15, 2010 2:04 PM

ninetwenteetoo: The problem with growth for the characters is there hasn't been any time. One season folds into the next. So Bon Temps has dealt with the serial killer followed by the maenad one after the other. The town has been rocked in a short time and the characters are understandably starting to break. Especially Tara but she's been breaking since season 1. I think Sam looking for his family is sign of change within him. On a show so built around cliffhangers I think that's as much growth as we are going to get for now.

Posted by: TylerDFC at June 15, 2010 2:30 PM

Hooray for True Blood recaps!

It's true a lot of things happened without any real, steady plot advancement, but I really dug this episode. It was great fun and each of the characters was sent on their paths--and that's more than good enough for a season opener. The only thing I'm not looking forward to is seeing more of the major trainwreck that is Tara. Sure, her mom's both an abusive drunk and a sanctimonious cunt; she was the one who summoned an evil maenad to Bon Temps, thus putting the lives of everyone around her in jeopardy; and her boyfriend was brutally murdered; but still.

What do y'all think is so self-righteous about Sookie? I thought she acted as any other person would in such circumstances; get the police to help as well as enlist Jessica and Eric's help.

More wolves, now please. I want my Alcide.

Hell yes. I loved the way the wolves looked, so that was a great start.

Posted by: Thijs at June 15, 2010 3:12 PM

TylerDFC - Yeah, I see what you're saying. It's sometimes hard to remember all this is supposed to take place in a short period of time. I do feel there is hope for Sam - Tara, I don't know, maybe she can win me back. I'm more skeptical that I will be able to go back to liking her.

Posted by: ninetwenteetoo at June 15, 2010 4:00 PM

Yay Cindy!!! Good recap.

What was that stupid little screaming thing the Queen was doing when she had Eric up against the wall? It was the stupidest noise I've ever heard.

Frantic episode to be sure, but I was happy enough that the show was back. Besides, frantic is kind of the theme, right?

Oh, and I watch it online as well on ninjavideo.net. Good quality.

D'oh. Yea, Scully, I also like the site watchtrueblood, they have links to megavideo sites, but they're very reliable about getting the episode up relatively quickly.

RE: Character Growth

Yea, that whole shebang. I'm really hoping after this season they'll follow a little closely with the book's timeline and have an actual time progression between the season break. Because they keep moving at the same pace (the past two seasons were over the course of about 8 weeks), it's not giving the characters time to breath, but we, the audience, have had two and a half years to process everything.

Also, Thijs, there have been several (as my favorite Video Blog reviewers from Camp Blood say) "Whatever, Sookie!" moments over the past couple of seasons. Yes, she's had a lot of shit to deal with, but she acts like all of the shit that she deals with is a much bigger pill to swallow than anyone else's. Her interactions with Kenya and Sheriff were less "concerned girlfriend" and more victim of the injustice of vampire prejudices, not as bad as some of the crap she has pulled, but just the way she acts like she's the hottest martyr in town.

Posted by: Kayanne at June 15, 2010 4:42 PM

Also, Cindy thank you!

And I agree about the accent. Ryan Kwanten needs to start sharing whoever he has as a dialect coach.

Posted by: Kayanne at June 15, 2010 4:44 PM

Thank you Patty and Kayanne! I'm going to hurry home so that I can bask in the glory of Eric. I didn't know these episodes were available online.

(Side note: are all HBO shows available on these sites? Because my husband would shit his pants if he could watch The Pacific right now. And it would be nice not to have to buy cable + HBO for A Game Of Thrones.)

Anyway, off to see Eric...

Posted by: Scully at June 15, 2010 4:51 PM

This is dorky, but google "watch the pacific." There are a few sidereel links and stuff that immediately pop up. Many of them are available in streaming or in downloadable form. (I tend to stream like a first class n00b). Really, that works for any show (almost). But because I'm a total guilty-goody-goody like our dear Miss Stackhouse, I also try and buy the dvds when they become available to make me feel better.

Posted by: Kayanne at June 15, 2010 5:04 PM

Her interactions with Kenya and Sheriff were less "concerned girlfriend" and more victim of the injustice of vampire prejudices, not as bad as some of the crap she has pulled, but just the way she acts like she's the hottest martyr in town.

Yeah, I just finished rewatching the episode and I definitely see it now. I guess a steady combination of the show and the books has gotten me really used to the way she acts. She actually annoyed the crap out of me in the first couple of episodes.

Oh, and Scully, tvshack.com is also pretty good.

Posted by: Thijs at June 15, 2010 5:35 PM

Thanks Sharon! Yeah, that screech was annoying and not at all scary (which I think it was supposed to be). When Eric bared his teeth in response, I found it to be much more animal-istic.

Posted by: Cindy at June 15, 2010 9:04 PM

Having read the books, I find the queen to be the most annoying character. A vampire who only cares about fun and playing board games is not the kind of vamp that would become a queen. In the book she is tough as nails and yes she cares about money, but only because of the power. It is the power that concerns Sophie Anne and that is not shown at all in the show at all. I also wonder if they will reference why the queen is so broke. Katrina did a lot of damage in the real world and in the book world, so I wonder if that is why the queen is broke in the tv world.

Posted by: Morgan Lefai at June 15, 2010 10:39 PM

why couldn't they just have sam and bill kiss? why the teasing? seriously... that needed to happen.

Posted by: kristin at June 15, 2010 11:09 PM

The Tara storyline just bugs me. And that's mostly just because the romance with Eggs was SO lame last season. Weren't they completely out of it and forgetting shit all the time during that whole thing? I really hated it while it happened and it just never clicked with me. Here I was hoping we'd get some good Tara time again but she's still in whiny mode and I hate it.

But what I don't hate? Lots and lots and lots of Eric. Naked. Uber sexy. That man is just too much.

Posted by: figgy at June 16, 2010 9:11 AM

Considering how much blood he took, I want to see Lafayette's dreams about Eric. I'm pretty sure they'd put the rest of these vanilla fantasies to shame and be all the more disturbing considering Lafayette's PTSD due to the basement nightmare. Talk about a double edged sword.
