If I Wanted Mindless Entertainment, I'd Go to the Movies

“Nikita” is very nearly a good show, and as much as it would pain me to watch a program on “The CW,” I want it to be good enough to warrant continued viewership. It’s a great premise — so good, in fact, that this is the fourth incarnation of it (after the film, La Femme Nikita, a Bridget Fonda movie, and two television shows). Maggie Q (Mission Impossible) stars as a government-trained assassin who bolts from “The Division” after they put a hit out on her for falling in love (the nerve!) and murder her civilian boyfriend. Turns out, there are many more agents-in-training like Nikita: The Division plucks out criminally troubled attractive people with fuzzy memories of their misdeeds, stages their deaths, and gives them a second life as government assassins, whether they want to be or not. Nikita desires to bring down The Division, rescue the other agents, reclaim her life, and — of course — get her revenge.

To do so, she’ll be pitted against her former handler, Michael (Shane West), and lots of menacing-looking higher ups, like “The Division” shrink, Amanda (“The O.C.’s” Melinda Clarke), and the head of the division, Percy (Xander Berkley). Nikita also has a mole within The Division, Alex (Lyndsy Fonseca), someone she planted with an alluring back story to help her take down the place from the inside.

The pilot episode is a lot of flash and dazzle, and Maggie Q is fantastic in both a swimsuit and with a gun. She’s goddamn electric, and her energy feeds into the show, which has a similar vibe to the other McG produced show, “Chuck,” though it lacks the humor (but not the unintentional camp, unfortunately).

The problems with “Nikita” are salvageable — the writing is painfully trite, the pilot is exposition heavy, and Shane West (“Once and Again,” A Walk to Remember) has all the charisma of a toenail — but, unless it’s improved, it does keep “Nikita” mired in the category of guilty-pleasure, instead of being a smart and sleek spy thriller. Moreover, it seems nearly impossible to keep up the pace over the course of a longer series. The mythology is firmly established in the pilot, and it would seem that overall plot development will be painfully incremental over the course of the series, but hell, that’s nothing six seasons of “Lost” didn’t prepare us for.

Whether you decide to follow “Nikita” will probably depend on your television-viewing habits. If you’re selective and limit yourself only to the smarter, more sophisticated appointment programming, “Nikita” is unlikely to merit your attention. It’s a second-tier show, entertaining but mindless. And given the overall evolution of television and its relative superiority now over the motion picture, I prefer to get my mindless entertainment in the theater, where the commitment level isn’t as high.

I'll give it 5 or 6 episodes and then we'll see. I feel compelled to watch anything with a female action heroine. I can't help it, call it misguided feminism, or just generally finding girls with guns hot, but as a kid who grew up fantasising about being James Bond, I need something to feed that fantasy. I need Evelyn Salt, Sydney Bristow, Sarah Connor, etc. to kick an unbelievable amount of ass while I clap gleefully. So I'll cross my fingers and hope that this will be less of a Bionic Woman and more of Alias.

Can you really call a show that lasted 5 seasons a failure?

Regardless of my nostalgic love for the old series with Peta Wilson, I have so, so many issues with this incarnation. I really liked Maggie Q in it, but I have issues with narrative choices (e.g. you think that super-secret, all-powerful, gone-rogue intelligence agency doesn't have a key logger on its recruits' computers? Are you fucking KIDDING me?), and dead god was Shane West miscast. You sir, are no Roy Dupuis, and that seriously has to the first time that's ever, ever been said.

In any event, I'll give it at least one more ep because pilots are like the first time you have sex with someone: it's not necessarily an indicator of how good it COULD be, but color me thus far unimpressed.

After mercilessly shooting, crippling (and raping?) Babs Gordon, I never thought I'd say this, but Joker and I are on the same page.

Also, Bridget Fonda was in a movie based on Nikita. It was called Point of No Return. Oh, and the Peta Wilson starring La Femme Nikita lasted on USA for like 4 seasons. Hardly a failure. I've never even seen one iteration of this story and I knew that. So. Yeah.

Man, did I love that series with Peta Wilson.

Oh, mediocre late 90s syndicated TV, how I miss you.

I suppose I am all alone with my Shane West lust. That is just fine with me. I can lick him like the no need to talk lolipop he is. I dearly loved the old show, but will watch this as I have nothing better to do. Plus I want ALL her outfits. And her weapons too.

Posted by: DeckOfficer!! at September 14, 2010 6:52 PM

McG, McG... sigh.

Posted by: Lbees at September 14, 2010 7:14 PM

Brief nitpicky note: the crappy Bridget Fonda version was a movie, Point of No Return, not a show.

And, as the New York Times pointed out, this is basically a fifth incarnation -- Alias spun off Nikita's premise.

I liked this pilot okay (not as much as I liked the Peta Wilson show) but my favorite Nikita moment of all time has to be from the original movie, where she stabs the interrogating detective with a pen and yells, "NIKITAAAAAAAAA!" Classic.

Whoops, RobP got there first. Sorry for the double info!

Loved the series on USA network with Peta Wilson and Roy Dupuis. The chemistry between the two was fantastic and the show was so dark and edgy. I'd rather watch those episodes on DVD.

I suppose I am all alone with my Shane West lust.

Well, you're probably not ALL alone, but damn, for my money, he's a total charisma vacuum. Not to mention a plank of wood, and not the fancy kind, like zebrawood.

I found myself watching The Echelon Conspiracy (don't ask!!) and thinking, man, when you make Shia LaBoeuf look good, you need to re-evaluate your career choices.

Posted by: MM at September 14, 2010 9:34 PM

Of course, this leads me around full circle to say, as much as I loved the Peta Wilson-era Nikita, Roy Dupuis had about as much acting range as a plank of wood*. But, man, was he pretty. Man-pretty, even. Those eyelashes!

*For the record, I understand that he's a very prolific actor in ye olde French-Canadian circles, and possibly quite a good one. But his character on that show was just so ridiculously unemotive, I used to call it "acting as still life."

Posted by: MM at September 14, 2010 9:38 PM

I'll probably watched this because I'm a sucker for shows where females kick ass. Bonus points if she's hot like Maggie Q.

I did find myself missing Alias though when I watched the first episode. Some of the acting in Nikita was definitely questionable (like every time Lyndsey Fonseca had to say, "What's it to you??" or something in that sounding-tough vein.)

Oh La Femme Nikita: you always manage to make me delurk. Hear hear to the love for the original series and calling out Dustin on his mistake: four seasons and a successful campaign to resurrect the show for a fifth does not a failure make. By that criteria, some of Pajiba (and my!) favorite shows (Veronica Mars, Freaks and Geeks, Arrested Development, the list goes on) are failures. Granted, Dustin didn't explain his criteria--so how bout it, Rowles? By what measure did you judge LFN a failure?

I'm with Kristi: Peta Wilson and Roy Dupuis had the best chemistry of any couple on any show I can remember. They basically didn't even have to write dialogue for them most of the time, because they could communicate whatever was going on in their relationship through meaningful glances (aided by the stellar trip hop / industrial sountrack).

And Savage Cats, awesomely enough, your post is not the first time someone has written that precise sentiment: my comment on AV Club's review of the pilot was much the same (and also pointed out that Roy Dupuis pulled off sexy badass IN SPITE OF a mullet.)

In short, I will stick to my DVD's. Partly because the mere idea of Shane West as Michael makes me giggle endlessly, but mostly because Peta Wilson could snap Maggie Q like a twig. I don't care how many action movies she's been in--her legs are the width of my forearm.

Posted by: bravesjade at September 14, 2010 11:16 PM

She looks like she'd snap in half if she hit anyone. Also maybe she should eat a bit of food.

Posted by: surreysam at September 15, 2010 12:24 AM

It's hard to watch Nikita with that butterface Maggiq Q in the roles. Especially when they previous series had Peta Wilson. I think I would rather download the old series again

That and this Shane west guy looks like he can get beaten up by a kitten. The old Michael was so much more menacing

And don't get em started on the fact that they put some fucking eye candy Melinda Clrke instead of giving Dear Deadly Madeline

Well, I was about to barge in, eyes ablaze, fists clenched, ready to screech "Are you fucking KIDDING ME? La Femme Nikita a FAILURE? Four seasons and a HUGE cult following not GOOD enough for you?!"

But now I see I'm not the only one I'm very relieved; nice to see the love for Peta Wilson, she was awesome.

This is a perfect example of the problem with "mainstream" reviewers when they waddle into an area they know nothing about, like science ficiton: their ignorance on topic undercuts their review. I agree with what the reviewer writes but it is undercut by his lazy research.

La Femme Nikita: Kick ass Movie by Luc Beson (sp?) with the iconic opening scene of a group of thugs walking through the streets dragging a dead body. Also had the wonderful Character of the Cleaner which has always followed the remakes and has never been properly repeated (Harvy K's version was cringe-worthy)

Point of No return: Inept American Remake. Sucked massively and should be destroyed at all costs.

Alias: Rip-off TV show (Crator's actual pitch as told on NPR's Fresh Air: what if Felicity became a secret agent?)

La Femme Nikita: Canadian series based on show, 5 seasons - Not a failure as it lasted 5 seasons. Longer than some of the lame-o shows loved around here.

Nikita: 2010 series that I hope dies fast. It is on the CW, will become a teen drama and have all the excitement and thrills of Gossip Girl. A CW answer to Covert Affairs which is a lame derivative of Alias wich was a rip-off of La Femme Nikita...(round and down the toilet bowl we go!)

And before anyone brings it up. Burn Notice is closer to a Rip off of a La Carre character than this little swirl of nonsense.

On reflection, I am going to redact the word "lazy" as that was not fair. Sorry about that, I apologize as you are usually a pretty on point researcher. Please use the word "incomplete" instead.

Posted by: Chuckfilm at September 15, 2010 10:22 AM

Mr. Rowles, you should have done an extensive research before you said that La Femme Nikita-1997 Canadian TV series is a failure! You should have seen how UNITED the fans are(including other fans from around the world) to bring back LFN. Then, came "Alias", a copy-cat, a rip-off from LFN! The words used, storyline were taken from LFN.

Now, Nikita-2010, CW made a big mistake of resurrecting this show. I concur with you this is a B TV show. It lacks the chemistry among the actors, edginess, and the acting of actors. The ensemble of LFN-1997, Canadian TV series did the BEST PERFORMANCE. For me Peta Wilson is THE NIKITA while Roy Dupuis is THE MICHAEL. I have nothing against Maggie Q but the role of Nikita is not for her.

Between the new Nikita and Covert Affairs, I'll choose the latter without second thought.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE LFN
AND I LOVE PETA WILSON AND ROY DUPUIS
I THINK THEY NEED TO DO A REUNION FILM
AND NOT SHOW CASE THIS "NEW NIKITA"
NO ONE WANTS TO SEE THAT!!!

Bravesjade said all I wanted to say and way more eloquently than I ever could so, thumbs up, and please marry me.

I just love La Femme Nikita. How can I compare Maggie Q in her anorexic red bikini breaking the neck of a very obese guy with her tiny arm and stabbing a body guard with a knife that she actually throws versus gorgeous Peta Wilson first day walking inside Section and Walter Glancing at her. She look vulnerable but strong. No way, I agree with somebody else who said that Maggie has a butterface, she is just not that strong for me. And honestly is not about her been Asian, I am not Caucasian, but if she were to be Asian I want her looking strong and healthy, she is supposed to be the best of the best no, she is not a recruit anymore.

I enjoy the commentary on this website, it really gives it that community feel!

Posted by: RA at January 5, 2011 7:49 PM

Yep, I enjoy the commentary as well, mostly because I like seeing LFN fans still strong and active after all these years. I finished watching the whole series a couple of months ago, because back in the day when it aired on TV I saw only first season (I'm from Poland and I don't think second one aired at all).

And somehow last year I came across LFN somewhere on the net and remembered how I enjoyed watching it. It's dark, cruel with extraordinary atmosphere and mostly focused on dialogue instead of one action scene after another. I do watch Nikita, but come on, it's nothing like LFN.

Boy, how I'd like to see both Micheal and Nikita as well as Operations and Madeline on screen once again.
