NBC's "The Munsters" Remake Now Officially Too Awesome to Ignore

By Dustin Rowles | TV Reviews | June 13, 2012 | Comments ()

The idea that someone might remake "The Munsters" -- a kitschy, black-and-white relatively short-lived series from back in the 60s -- seems preposterous today. How would that work? But then again, what if that someone were Bryan Fuller, the guy behind Pushing Daises and Wonderfalls, a guy who could bring a sort of magical whimsy to a quirky monster family? Let's also say that it's expected to be a darker, edgier version of "The Munsters" that explores the origins of Herman and Lilly, and how it is they came to settle at 1313 Mockingbird Lane.

Intriguing, but I'm not sold.

Well, how about casting Jerry O'Connell -- the fat kid from Stand By Me -- as Herman Munster?

Nope. That's a step backwards. Now you're actually losing me.

OK. OK! How about this: Eddie Izzard as Grandpa Munster?

Oh, well. Now you're talking. I'm not quite sold on the idea, but I'm listening again.

OK, then. How about this: Portia de Rossi as Lily Munster?

Boom! I'm in.

Oh, wait? What network did you say it was on?

Don't mess with the original. It can't get any better.

I lost my Izzard love after watching several episodes of The Riches. I KEPT watching that crap show because he was in it. But after a while I realized he was utter crap in it himself, and totally struggling--no doubt due to dreadful direction, but still. I may never recover my previous devotion.

  • Jezzer

If Bryan Fuller's behind it, I'm in. "Dead Like Me" is one of my all-time favorite shows, and he was on "Heroes" during its tolerable period.

  • no one

I'll watch. Since Better of Ted went off the air I've been waiting to see Portia de Rossi in anything.

  • Ender

Yep, she was great in that, as were all the rest of them. Sorely missed that show *Sheds one Tear*

  • melia

Am I alone in the not-loving-Wonderfalls thing? 'Cuz I don't.

  • dizzylucy

Just when the Jerry O'Connell news turned me off of it, Portia brought me back in. Darn.

  • Judge Holdenmynuts

Why is it preposterous? everything is being remade! heaven forbid anyone on the "major" networks come up with an original idea for a TV show...
if they're gonna keep robbing the TV graveyard for ideas, here's what I wanna see remade:
    Kung Fu
    Six Million Dollar Man
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
    Space 1999
    and of course ....

  • kilmo

They already remade Knight Rider. It lasted 3 episodes!!!?

  • Tinkerville

Jerry O'Connell really does have such a punchable face, doesn't he? But I'll be tuning in for Eddie, Portia, and a healthy dose of Bryan Fuller whimsy.

  • ,

    You're missing a couple characters.

Pajibites rally for a casting call!

    Eddie Munster, portrayed by ...

Poor, poor ugly Marilyn, portrayed by ...

In other news: Nostalgia is badly overrated.

  • zyzzyva

They've been cast already, but not mentioned since they're not big names.

Marilyn: British actress, Charity Wakefield (apparently in the newer Sense & Sensibility) Eddie: Mason Cook (Spy Kids 4?)

  • lowercase_ryan

    I looooooooove Eddie Izzard

"NBC's "The Munsters" Remake Now Officially Too Awesome to Ignore"

    No, it's not.

  • HMDK

Yeah, it really isn't. And these sort of blurps are getting damn annoying.
They make me embarrassed for the guy or gal writing them.
It's sounds like a nauseous incest-mix of publicist speak and fanboy/girl raving idiocy.

  • Mr_Zito

Wait, Jerry O'Connell is the kid from Stand by Me??? How I didn't know that? I thought he was just the lame protagonist in Sliders.

  • ellcoolj

Lame protagonist??? No way... he was awesome in the mid 90's kinda way
He just wanted to get home and had some super cool companions... the suave and debonair professorial type, the cocksure adventurer and the not-my-but-wait-yes-she-is-my girlfriend... all the elements for a super show (all this is based on 15 year old memories...)

  • Ender

Yep, then they killed the super cool companions, and the show was awful. :(

  • Wembley

Oh. It's on the NoBody Cares network.

  • John W

If this lasts one season I'll be surprised.

  • ellcoolj

He will always be the guy from sliders to me... and I like that!
You had me at Pushing Daisies

Not really that preposterous. 'The Munsters' has come back nearly once every decade since the '60s.

Yvonne deCarlo was a huge catch for the original show, one of the world's great beauties back then, That being said, Eddie Izzard as an ancient vampire / mad scientist? Shut up and take my money.

  • You lost me at Jerry O'Connell. But you pulled me back in with Portia.

  • TheOriginalMRod

Well it can't be any worse than the Dallas reboot.

  • Whenever I see the promos for that, I think "wow, Larry Hagman's still alive?"

  • TheOriginalMRod

I know right!?! Well he did get a new liver didn't he? I wonder if he is taking care of this one.
