NBC Renews "Community"

By Dustin Rowles | TV Reviews | May 10, 2013 | Comments ()

As you can see, Abed is overjoyed.

We can just forget that the fourth season finale ever happened, right? And maybe the 8 of the 12 episodes before that? But here's to a less uneven fifth season! Handshakes all around.

No one is happier about this than Santa.

FUCKIN' A! Who gives a shit if Dan Harmon is here or there...This is the best comedy on television right now and it's great that NBC saw fit to renew it for another season! If you're going to nit-pick about timelines and WHO THE FUCK GRADUATED...please, just go back to watching reruns of FRIENDS, because that's where your dumb asses need to be...I WELCOME ANOTHER SEASON OF THIS SERIES...Showrunners or what the fuck...PLEASE! IT'S ONLY TELEVISION...Oh, did I mention...IT'S FREE!!!

  • My ears are ringing from your broken caps-lock and horrible taste in television.

I'll just never understand why Harmon was dumped. He's difficult, sure, but most of the big showrunners sound like absolute nightmares. It might have made sense if he'd just been dumped somewhat symbolically as an FU before the show was cancelled, but since NBC are obviously determined to drag it out, why not just put up with him until they got their 100 eps. Am I wrong in thinking that a show like this one that relies on it's cult status would be worth more in syndication if it retained that status and was actually good all the way through?

It all just seems so silly now. So much of the drama seemed to be about Chevy Chase, who clearly disliked the show and wanted out anyway. Now he's gone, so what was the point?

  • If Community were a top 10 show all along, I'd guarantee Harmon would still be there. The ratings the show generates weren't greater than the pain in the ass Harmon was to them. It's a lot easier to drag the series out to 100 episodes while slashing the budget with tame showrunners

Jeff majored in Education. He'll be back teaching How To Fake A Degree 101.

  • Fabius_Maximus

My bets are on that, too.

  • zeke_the_pig

I've completely ignored the Harmon-less run of the show but damn it makes me so happy every fuckin' time to see that Troy dance.

  • Batesian

I wouldn't be surprised if they have Jeff realize that he's grown too much of a conscience to be a lawyer*, and instead returns to Greendale as a teacher.

Anyway, like Rochelle, choosing optimism. This season was definitely uneven, but Harmon's tenure had its rough patches also.

  • Batesian

*Not saying lawyers are soulless scum by definition; just that's how they've shown his character arc.

  • DominaNefret

If they renew this but don't renew Hannibal, I'm going to be fucking pissed. I know this is a 30 minute sitcom and Hannibal is a 60 minute drama, but I will still get mad if this ends up taking half a slot that Hannibal should be filling.

    Hannibal > Community.

Though, if they both get renewed, that is a-okay.

  • Three_nineteen

I'm glad everyone has a job for another year. Still not going to watch it.

  • MikeRoorda

Community is a 2am booty call that I know I'll regret, but I drink sometimes and you know what? Shit happens. And my standards are embarrassingly low.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to finish hate-watching Hemlock Grove. Later I'm probably gonna eat glass because, fuck it, I've clearly given up.

  • So where's the petition to bring back Dan Harmon? At this point they don't seem to mind the ratings. Can't they all suffer working with Dan so that we can get great tv?

  • naturalbornbastard

Only two seasons and a movie left.

  • Well, thank GOD last night's horrible episode wasn't the series finale.

  • Candee

Someone gave you a down arrow, so I gave you an up one. 'Cause I agree. May not have been the worst...

...but would have been the worst if it was the series finale. Definitely wasn't all that good. Oof.

  • Long_Pig_Tailor

It looks like someone just kind of scrolled through and downvoted everything for shits and giggles. Or because they just hate even the idea of conversation about Community.

  • vic

I'm of two minds on this...it doesn't bode well that when I saw this post, I exclaimed, "WHAT?!" in disbelief, and not the good kind.

But then, I love the actors and their characters on the show. And it hasn't been all bad. I can't deny Britta's been used a lot better than how she was most of the time under Harmon. But the show's still not as good as it was back then. When it was good back then.

But I guess it wouldn't hurt to keep watching...right?

  • Hopefully the writers will take this as an opportunity to have fun with the characters and take a step away from trying to keep it Harmonesque. It will be ok if there is not another paintball episode.

Some of us have been watching "The Office" for nine years. It can't be any worse than the last four, unless they hire Ed Helms.

  • "unless they hire Catherine Tate."

    Fixed that for ya.

  • ironjohn

Shut your dirty whore mouth. Okay, I've never watched "The Office" but Catherine Tate is the DoctorDonna and deserves The Respect.

  • Hee! I suppose someday I'll get around to watching her Doctor Who eps and then I'll understand.

  • ironjohn

The Catherine Tate Show was fun but repetitive and I didn't spark to her season 4 Dr. Who run the first go-round, but it's pretty spiffy once digested and in my view the saddest Companion storyline.

  • Amy

I might be in the minority, but as her character's slipped more into the background, Catherine Tate's actually grown on me. The same could NEVER be said for Ed Helms. I want to punch that guy in the breadbasket every time he shows up onscreen.

  • Three_nineteen

I agree with you. As soon as Nelly stopped trying to be the manager, she jelled with the rest of the cast and started being an asset.

  • Long_Pig_Tailor

So... Either Jeff is missing a credit, or Jeff is teaching paralegal classes next year.

  • nachosanchez

or the dean puts Jeff on retainer as Greendale's lawyer for all of the suits against the school during various paintball and pillow fight related injuries.

  • Rochelle

Mixed feelings, but now that it's a done deal I'm going to choose optimism.

  • Blake

Damn you Rochelle and you glass half optimism.

  • Jay Logan

That's what I felt last year...

  • Rochelle

Me too. But I still like the characters enough to be happy to see them on my tv next year. I hope for less Chang. I like him better in small doses.

  • toblerone

  • Nova Prime

    Only Jeff graduated.

  • toblerone

And Pierce no? Otherwise how are they going to explain Chevy's absence? Can't the cast do the Sterling Cooper thing and get fired / quit and form a new Community with Harmon back at the helm?

  • Arran

What's left to explain? Chevy left the show and Pierce graduated. They need to have a reason for Jeff to still be around, but they don't need an excuse why Pierce ISN'T there.
