I Want To Have This Show's Traditional Vietnamese Gay Baby

"Modern Family" / Dustin Rowles

First impressions mean a lot in television, and whoever was responsible for putting together the promo ads for ABC’s “Modern Family” (Wednesdays, 9 EST) ought to be taken out to the woodshed and garroted. Take a gander:

twop-abc-newsletter2.jpg

I saw that promo poster a few weeks ago in EW, and my first thought was: Lame multi-camera traditional family sitcom with a drowning laugh track and enough gay stereotypes to kill Nathan Lane. The only question I had was why wasn’t it airing on FOX.

So, I was more than pleasantly surprised by the pilot episode. It’s not really at all what I was expecting. It’s actually funny. Really funny. And, from what I could glean just from the pilot, it’s a family sitcom an undercurrent of real heart. It’s good (good enough to attract Ed Norton to a future episode). It’s a better pilot, in fact, than NBC’s “Community.”

Now, my only question is: When will it be cancelled?

It’s not a multi-camera sitcom with a laugh track, although like “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation” it is yet another faux mockumentary show. Don’t let that dissuade you from watching it; the mockumentary aspect isn’t all that noticeable — it just gives the show a decent framing device and allows the three families the occasional confessional (which provides a lot of humor).

The three suburban families are the traditional one, with a neurotic uptight mother (the glorious Julie Bowen, who is the best actress on television that can’t hold a steady job) and the-thinks-he’s-cool Dad (Ty Burrell), in what is essentially a version of “The Office’s” Michael Scott as a father (only considerable less needy), and their two children. Then there’s an older man (Ed O’Neil) in a track suit, married to a sexy younger woman (Sofia Vergara), who brings her child, a chubby junior-high wannabe Lothario into the marriage. Finally, and what terrified me most, is a gay couple (Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet), who have just adopted a Vietnamese baby.

Besides the unhip Dad who uses text-speak in a failed effort to be the cool relatable father, the gay characters are actually the best thing about “Modern Family.” They do reflect, in a way, gay stereotypes, but they’re stereotypes as written by gay men, if that makes any sense. And though one of them is a flaming drama queen, they nevertheless feel real. They’re not caricatures. And neither, for that matter, is Ed O’Neil. I expected them to play up the trophy wife angle (the pilot episode doesn’t suggest why they got married, or if he’s rich), but the comedy seems to focus more on his age, and not her hotness. The traditional family, too, is just plain fucking awesome — one of the tiny narratives involves the Dad having to follow through on a promised punishment to shoot his son with a BB gun. It may sound sitcommy, but the result gets the biggest laugh, of many, in the show.

“Modern Family” comes from Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd, the team behind “Frasier,” “Just Shoot Me,” and “Back to You,” although I actually liked the pilot for this show more than I liked any of the others. It’s really more of what I expected from mid-season’s second stab of a “Parenthood” series over on NBC. It’s winsome. It’s genuine. And it’s really fucking funny, though the humor is understated and often deadpan. It’s “Arrested Development” without the screwball zaniness. And it just goes to show: You can never judge a television series by its promo ads.

Give it a shot. Trust me on this one. If the pilot is any indication, “Modern Family” is the best comedy on ABC, this side of “Better Off Ted,” which is ironic, since the latter show will probably take its place once “Modern Family” is cancelled.

Good to see ABC have a decent show once in a decade.

I believe it's spelled 'Vietnamese'.

I want to believe you so badly, but I gave up on sitcoms a long time ago. Then I gave Parks and Rec and try and it was hideous. I don't think I'm ready to be hurt that way again.

Julie Bowen? Acapulco Heat, Julie Bowen? Best actress on TV who can't hold a job.

I think she can't hold down a job for valid reasons.

ABC is as bad - if not worse - than Fox when it comes to giving good shows a chance to find an audience.
If this is available online, I'll check it out just because I like Ed O'Neill.

Wha-? The pilot has already aired? When did that happen?

Posted by: Rykker at September 22, 2009 2:37 PM

This doesn't air till tomorrow I thought.

I'm Vietnamese; what's a traditional Vietnamese gay baby?

I managed to watch the pilot about a week ago (?) and it was hilarious. Definitely catch it if you can.

Anyone whom can make Kelsey Grammer an award-winning comic actor and David Spade somewhat tolerable can work fucking miracles. Christopher Lloyd pwns.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson is the best thing to come out of Albuquerque since Neil Patrick Harris. I really hope this show succeeds because Jesse is a ridiculously nice guy.

Julie Bowen is a notorious show killer, isn't she? Why do they keep casting her?

Posted by: figgy at September 22, 2009 11:40 PM

Eric Stonestreet is the best thing to come out of Kansas City since Gates Ribs!! And he too, is a truly nice guy. Nice guys CAN finish first.

Televisionwithoutpity.com is giving sneak peak of the pilot episode. I watched it today and it's pretty damn funny. They gave away a lot of the laughs in the promos over the summer but overall, something I definitely will be watching this fall.

I hope people revisit this post because this show rocks all kinds of ass! Finally came on tonight at 8:00 central on ABC. Reminds me of Arrested Development blended with The Office. I have been trying to catch it since reading this post and when the wife and I saw it was on I texted a friend and by the end of the show we were both trading one liners from this wonderful piece of show. Ridiculously quotable...Instantly likable.

After watching two episodes of the show, it was good enough to warrant a "googling" to see if other bloggers/ critics were as pleasantly surprised as I. I like my shows with plenty of character nuances like Arrested Development and The Office and I think, with time, this might be one of those shows. It's on ABC, which gives it an instantly shortened life span, but one of these days America will be smart enough to appreciate actual creative talent on the television... Who am I kidding? THEY'RE NOT BEING TOLD TO LAUGH. WHO CAN LAUGH WITHOUT BEING PROMPTED TO BY A SMALL GROUP OF HOLLYWOOD STUDIO TOURISTS? WHO CAN LAUGH AT A TIME LIKE THIS??

For some reason I gave this show a try and was really pleasantly surprised. Instead of the crap I was expecting, instead you get sort of a comedic take on that show "Brothers and Sisters" but with a mock doc device thrown in. I liked it.

Caught the third show, shocked and awed at how much I didn't hate it. Went back to watch the pilot on Hulu and was blown away. I needed to read the reviews to see if people were killing it, and picked this one at random. Amazingly well written and dead on review. Good fucking job, man.

Your review was spot on. Sadly, it's almost a sure thing that not enough people will "get" this show.

I'm in agreement with just about everything i've read here. Modern Family is great. Just before the beginning of the fall tv season, I looked into which new shows seemed worth having the DVR record on a trial basis for me. Most reviewers and critics who saw the pilot ahead of time were positive and put it on top of their lists of worthwhile new shows. The print and on air promos didn't thrill me and I was skeptical, confused as to what brand of spray paint the critics were huffing. I gave it the nod anyway, along with Community (good and getting stronger), Bored to Death (on HBO) and Flash Forward (on the fence about this one), and suffice to say that i'm still waiting for 'V'... I was blown away by the Modern Family pilot, and I've laughed a lot more at this show, episode for episode, than any other new comedy i'm watching. And yes, you're all right, it's too good to live and ABC will kill it sooner than we think. Dustin Rowles inadvertently, i think, nails the real problem on the head at the top of the review. Too many times, when good shows are canceled, the blame is put solely on the viewership or we chalk it up to TV exec's who don't appreciate quality tv or "get" a show that isn't just a facsimile of 'Everyone Loves Raymond'. I think most people, across the board, would enjoy this show and that it's not too heady or 'oh so challenging' for the average tv viewer. It's just plain funny. And it would be hard for anyone not to see it. But actually SEEING it is the crux of the issue. And here's where fault lies with the network. It's not because they don't like the show. If the Execs didn't like it or 'get it', there's no way it would ever have gotten out of development and into production, let alone on your tv in their new fall lineup and in a prime time hour. The problem is evident by the promo which is uninspired and as Dustin Rowles observes, misleading as to what kind of show it is. The marketing for this show (and many other ABC shows that have come and gone, for better or for worse) was and is inept and wrongheaded so it acts more like a deterrent than anything else. And if you actively keep people from watching your shows with horrible promoting, they wont make you any money and they give you a simple, fiscal reason to cancel them. Whether or not a show makes money for the network is the only determining factor to it's longevity. History has proven that time and time again.

This show has definitely made my top 10 list. Since the invention of the single-camera sitcom, I have accrued a list of favorites (Arrested Development, 30 Rock, The Office, It's Always Sunny...). MOdern Family, along with Better Off Ted and Community, is quickly proving itself worthy of DVD ownership. Now, if only NBC had picked it up so it would have a fighting chance. Any network that keeps Parks and Rec on the air could do this show some good.

its not funny, in my view the camera action is just annoying, the humour isn't very good, the scripts are badly written, the actors aren't too bad though. They compare it to the simpsons but the humour is COMPLETELY different. Its good that it has been given a chance to air but I don't think its worth the 8pm Sunday night slot on Sky1.
