Last Night on "SNL": Helen Mirren's Magical Bosom

Interesting episode with Helen Mirren. I’ve included more skits than usual in today’s highlights, not because it was a better episode, but because so many mediocre or bad sketches had one or two inspired moments (usually thanks to Mirren). There was also a lot of focus on the fact that Mirren is one seriously hot 65-year-old, as well there should be.

Presidential Address Cold Open

The gist: “In a true example of compromise, I am pleased to say that no one got what he wanted, and everyone walked away unhappy.” Etc. etc. Some OK lines, though.

Helen Mirren Monologue

It’s not embeddable, so you’ll have to wait for the full episode this afternoon on Hulu. But it’s a fun short musical number basically about how hot Helen Mirren is. I think we can all agree on the sentiment.

Celebrity Taxes

It’s not even worth it to see (briefly) Helen Mirren playing Helena Bonham Carter. It’s like a skit written by Bruce Vilanch.

SNL Digital Short: Helen Mirren’s Magical Bosom

I absolutely love that the focus so far is on how hot Helen Mirren is. And this … it’s funny cause it’s true. (OK. It’s not actually that funny, but it is true.)

Fox and Friends

Fox News Anchors are both racist and dumber than loose testicles. Bravo, “SNL.” Not that funny. In fact, not funny at all. Buy hey! With this and the Cold Open, “SNL” actually takes a couple of stabs at pseudo-relevant political humor. B- for effort!

Foo Fighters

What’s that dripping onto your lap? That’s your face, motherfuckers. It’s melting off.

Weekend Update: James Carville

I do not usually care for the Carville segments, but this one kills

Weekend Update: Shelley Elaine

*Highlight of the Night*

I wasn’t expecting much here, but by the end of this segment, I had nearly pissed in my bathrobe. And then I watched it a second time and actually did piss my bathrobe.

Weekend Update Highlights

Not Seth Meyers’ best week.

Two Sides with Hugh Jackman

Again, like the Monologue, this skit wasn’t embeddable, despite being one of the better skits of the night. Helen Mirren shows both sides of Julie Andrews: The sweet singing side, and the angry murdering side. Find it, just to see Helen Mirren spear her assistant.

Crunk-Ass Easter Festival

The return of Ass Dan, Helen Mirren as DJ Stank Skunk, and of course, Methed-Out Coyotes.

The Roosevelts

Bad skit, mocking the historical inaccuracies in “The Kennedys.” But then again, Helen Mirren as Eleanor Roosevelt makes out with Marilyn Monroe and later orders the bombing of Pearl Harbor while topless

Foo Fighters: Walk

Both songs tonight were from the new album. I liked this one better.

Not even the audience can muster enthusiasm to laugh during the retarded cold opens.

Fred Armisen is like SNL's Fantasia Barino. He keeps coming back, and I guess people like him, but I cannot for the fucking life of me understand it.

Courtney, perhaps if SNL tried redoing a Goon Show sketch (hell, how about an entire episode?) it might expose the audience to actual comedy.

'What time is it, Eccles?' is a classic.

That header pic looks like Jenna Elfman.

As usual, a criminally awful waste of a great talent. I went to sleep after the Fox sketch.

Used to be SNL would pick up a mediocre host and soar with a great host beside them.

Now they need a great host to lift them up? Oh how the mighty have fallen.

There was a sneaky good Johnny Depp impression in the Mort Mort Feingold sketch, I believe by Paul Brittain, which got all of one line.

The funniest part of the Fox and Friends sketch was playing the long list of "corrections" in slow motion.

Vocals were too quiet on the first Foo Fighters song, but they killed it nonetheless. The second one was okay.

The Shelley Elaine bit was worth watching at least four of the accompanying dud videos. Not five or more, though. But I did nearly pee.

Oh, Dustin, every Sunday I feel so bad for you, thinking how you spent the previous evening. God, why do you keep doing this to yourself?

Also, thank you for the Foo Fighters vids. You made the Foos a little more wealthy this morning. I'm serious--two minutes into the first song I opened another browser window and ordered the shit out of that shit.

SNL is no longer ever even remotely funny, which saddens me. Even with a good host they can't muster anything really laugh-inducing. I may chuckle in a pitying sort of way at Seth Meyers, but only because his mugging for the camera has spirit.

Funniest thing about SNL is that there are still people who watch SNL. If you gotta laugh at something, laugh at that.

What is it with you loving the Foo Fighters? They're just a generic, shitty rock band, and they think they're way way way harder than they are. Did Dave Grhol seriously almost do a fucking hair spin during one of those songs? Last great American rock band my ass; these dudes blow.

You...laughed at Shelley Elaine? How drunk were you?

I hate how many of these "characters" that show up on SNL just consist of some person who seems normal UNTIL THEY START SCREAMING FOR NO REASON. Screaming doesn't make something funny.

the fox and friends sketch should get bonus points for the "fact-check" scroll at the end of it. Hit pause a few times.

They wasted another great host. Dame Helen was clearly up for anything...and they barely used her. She deserved so much more. And I am so jealous of Kristin Whig for getting to motorboat her.

Did I miss the Shelley/Frankenstein mentioned up there?

This one lost me when I knew Frank would walk through the door and got me back when his son was named Igor. I lold

So, I like that some bands aren't afraid to play their old stuff, but when are the Foo Fighters going to record a new album?

Posted by: frankly at April 10, 2011 5:57 PM

Anyone heading over to Hulu to watch the opening monologue, don't bother. They cut it from the episode. The availability blurb says "some sketches... may be omitted due to various restrictions." I guess they felt there's already too much sexy Helen Mirren on the internet?

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at April 10, 2011 9:15 PM

I thought "Rope" was from their new album...

Posted by: Protoguy at April 10, 2011 11:52 PM

wow I can't watch a single one of those embeded clips cause I'm in australia. Fuck you NBC

I saw that we agreed on the James Carville bit and I was pleasantly surprised. Then I saw your opinion on the Shelly Elaine skit and I suddenly have no idea what you find funny anymore. I haaated that bit. The hair was the only joke that worked and we got that in the first two seconds. The rest was hacky and predictable.

I enjoyed the premise of Mort Mort, if only because Samberg's character yields so much potential. But yeah, they couldn't quite figure that one out. I also quite enjoyed the Digital Short, if only because Nasim Pedrad sold it so well (seriously, her and Bobby Moynihan had better be around for a long time, because they are the best parts of the show these days). Hugh Jackman was funny, though the Ice Cube inclusion seemed to lack focus. The Easter thing killed me! I fucking love when they do their Juggalo-ripping bits.

No love for the Perspectives Photo Studio? I thought that worked quite well. Seth Meyers even acted in a sketch for once! (As himself, but still it worked) And the Strip Club sketch was funny, and featured a great cameo by Dave Grohl, though it did drag quite a bit in spots.

Oh, and I liked Foo Fighters too. Back in 2003. ZING!

I gotta say, I don't like Helen Mirren - neither as an actress, nor as a piece of aged eye-candy. I just do not see it. Young eye-candy, sure, she was, but now: meh.

How about the strip club DJ sketch? Only funny skit of the whole night, and it was the last one.
