"If I Sh*t Myself, Nobody Says a Word. Got It?" The 10 Best TV Episodes of the Week

Shows Watched: 23

The Honorable Mentions: 23. “Man Up,” 22. “Survivor,” 21. “The Middle,” 20. “Once Upon a Time,” 19. “Modern Family,” 18. “Bored to Death,” 17. “Suburgatory.” 16. “Hart of Dixe,” 15. “Enlightened,” 14. “The Good Wife,” 13. “American Horror Story” 12. “Revenge.” and 11. “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”

A few notes about the honorable mentions this week: I hate that it’s true, but “American Horror Story” is growing on me. Even sadder, perhaps, is that so is the CW’s “Hart of Dixie.” It’s a really sweet show, y’all; Jason Street is fantastic, and so is Vince’s Dad from “Friday Night Lights.” I’m really trying with “Bored to Death,” but it’s not doing it for me. It’s too dry, or an acquired taste. I didn’t care for the first season, and I thought the second season was great. This season, so far, feels flat. I did like this week’s episode of “Enlightened” more than the pilot episode, however. Luke Wilson is great in it. I know I should probably check in on “Psych” this season, and during the next rerun break, I’m going to see what it is about the “Vampire Diaries” that have so many of you in a tizzy. I hope it’s better than “True Blood.”

The 10 Best Episodes of the Week

10. Parenthood: A down week for “Parenthood” as they sought to shoehorn that Cee Lo guest appearance into the plotline (although, his soul version of that Janis Joplin song was outstanding). I do not like that Seth has returned, if only because it will cause complications for Jason Ritter’s character, and Jason Ritter’s character doesn’t deserve complications. The highlight of the episode, however, was Joel’s speech to Zeke. That was impressive.

9. Homeland: A transitional episode, mostly to showcase Nicholas’ crazy, let us know that he knows that his wife was sleeping with his best friend, and set up a potential relationship with Carrie, who had to remove surveillance from Nicholas’ house. I’m happy about that, as her spying was creepy.

8. The Walking Dead: TK will have the full recap up tomorrow morning. I wish there were more zombies in this show.

7. The League: The “Au Pair” episode with a guest stint from Matthew Berry, which may be the dorkiest guest spot in a comedy since Wil Wheaton on “Big Bang Theory.” I’m not complaining, although I find Berry to be mostly insufferable. However, he’s certainly more palatable than that fuckwit Eric Karabel, amiright? (I just lost seven readers).

6. Dexter: Whatever else you want to say about this sixth season, which doesn’t have the guest star power of previous seasons, the Doomsday killers are the most creative killers of the series so far. And Mos “It’s Just Mos, Motherfucker” Def has been outstanding; I’m going to hate to see him fall back into his old ways and ultimately under the knife of Dexter.

5. Happy Endings : The “Whisker basket” and “Women be stoppin’” lines were enough by themselves to make this a top five showing on a week with no Thursday night NBC sitcoms.

4. How I Met Your Mother: This show is on again, off again, but when it’s on — as it was this week — it’s one of the best sitcoms on the air. They’re also making brilliant use of Kal Penn.

3. Up All Night: It was probably too early to feature a flashback episode, but this week’s “Up All Night” was my favorite of the season. Oh, and look what I found on YouTube:

2. Sons of Anarchy: After a slow third season, Kurt Sutter is packing it in this year: There’s a death and/or a major event in every episode. I don’t want to spoil it, but that last scene this week was a heartbreaker. He/She was one of my favorite characters. You know what I love the most about this season, though? Clay might kill Tara. Oh, yeah.

1. Boss: I can already sense that this is going to be one of those shows that gains steam in between seasons when most of you find it on Netflix because I don’t think Starz is available in that many homes. Check out my review.

*****

Season Pass Deleted from My DVR: “Terra Nova,” “The Amazing Race,” “2 Broke Girls,” “The Gifted Man,” “Persons of Interest,” “Fringe.” “Last Man Standing,” “The Ringer,” “Unforgettable,” “Castle,” and “Whitney.”

Network Cancellations: “Free Agents,” “Charlie’s Angels,” “How to Be a Gentleman,” “The Playboy Club,” and “H8r.”

There is no justice in a world where Michael Jackson's doctor is on trial just for slipping him a little extra propholol but Tara Knowles still has a license to practice medicine. I will be sorely disappointed if she does not die horribly this season.

I'm relatively confident that you'll be seeing more of him/her. There was a telltale sound effect as the credits came up that hinted that the final scene most likely didn't take.

I hope there's room in DVR for Boss.

How is Up All Night doing ratings wise? I'm rooting for Christina Applegate.

Kal Penn's acting has been wooden and terrible on HIMYM. He gets a pass for House and Harold & Kumar, but it seems like he's not even trying to act.

I hope it’s better than “True Blood.”

I want you to stop and think about just who thinks Vampire Diaries is worth watching. Then, punch yourself in the taint and question as to why you would ever watch either of them.

Quiet, you. Don't make me cross the border.

The Vampire Diaries is so much more interesting than True Blood. Infinitely. Not even all the sex could make that piece of garbage worth your time. Plus, I would much rather be bitten (and more) by the vamps on Vampire Diaries than the unattractive leads on True Blood.

As a 30-something father of two, I relate to much of what Up All Night is putting out there.

That said, the show has this almost bizarre compulsion to throw in some kind of 90's reference into every episode and they really should stop.

It's like making out with a girl who suddenly wants to start talking about how much you remind her of her Dad.

on SoA: I'm pretty sure he's not dead either. If only because Clay hasn't killed him yet and I can't imagine him escaping that easy.

I still hold with my pre-season prediction: Tara will die, Jax will find out it was Clay at the very end of this season, and season 5 will be Jax secretly planning revenge on Clay for Tara and JT's murders. There has to be somethign major to keep Jax in Charming now that he has his escape planned, other than Tara being killed I don't know what else works.

I'm loving SoA. You can just feel the whole club starting to unravel; Piney, Bobby, Juice, and especially Jax and Clay. I'm already trying to brace myself for another season finale like from Season One.

And I finally gave up on Terra Nova. I watched that last episode and realized there was nothing happening that made it even slightly related to a "gone back in time, now we have dinosaurs" setting. People argue, some schmuck gets snared up a tree, and a girl finally combs her hair. This is like the Wonder Years all over again.

Please punch yourself in the taint, twice.

I agree with Riles, Kal Penn has been acting like a caricature. Granted that's not uncommon for sitcom characters, but that's what's nice about HIMYM- when they get it right, which they used to do much more often, the characters felt real. But Kal Penn's character has just been grating.
It makes me sad because I love him as Kumar oh so much.

I loved Parenthood, but I agree it wasn't as great as it has been the past few weeks. I just know that Sarah is going to give up something SO GREAT (Ritter) for an addict who will inevitably let them all down. Amber's face at the end said it all.

Joel is perfection. Julia's smile after that speech said, "yeah, my husband is THE BEST."

All I have to say is this...

I think the branch broke.

Posted by: PissBoy at October 24, 2011 4:06 PM

Man, it's tough watching Modern Family slide into mediocre repetition. However, I'm glad Happy Endings is picking up the slack.

And yeah, Kal Penn's HIMYM stint SUCKS.

Dustin, if your experience with The Vampire Diaries is going to be anything like mine, you're likely to LOATHE the first episode. It's like Twilight with friggin' diary writing. But then when you're a couple of episodes into the season, somehow it gets so delicious. I don't want to spoil anything, but... there's an evil twin character. It's hilarious. I'm really curious to know what you'll think -- even if you'll rip it to shreds.

Posted by: Thijs at October 24, 2011 4:38 PM

I cant be watching the same Up All Night you are Rowles because, well I'm not watching it, I gave up after the first two craptacular episodes but the show sucks! Are you watching some alternate universe versions or something? Maybe with a different premise and writing and actors?

Last week's hangover episode of Psych was totally one of the best in a long time. The shootout scene alone was priceless. Thus far, I'd say the season is worth catching up on. I highly approve of them giving Woody the coroner more screen time.

Posted by: thenchonto at October 24, 2011 8:14 PM

It's not Doomsday Killer(S). You haven't figured it out yet? It's like Fight Club....there is only one.

Posted by: The Minn at October 24, 2011 8:38 PM

I really love Up All Night. The two leads are ridiculously likable (and I never thought I'd like Will Arnett again!) and it's consistently hilarious and relatable. That episode was genius.

True Blood geeks fighting it out with Vampire Diaries nerds is amusing me. Can't we have the Twihards show up and complete this pillow fight?

Posted by: Fredo at October 25, 2011 12:45 AM

LALALALALALALALALALALAAAAA.

I am way too lazy this season to track down Sons of Anarchy episodes so I'm quite possibly waiting until they show up on Hulu.

But you might have changed that Rowles.

Hmph.

Is that right? Because I hated the first episode so much that I can't even think about it without vomiting blood. Literally, my desk now looks like I gutted a cow on it. Even writing about it is causing my body to go into toxic shock syndrome and my left arm is flapping wildly as it attempts to put me down for my own good. I dread to think what would happen if I tried to talk about it.
It's actually funny? I could watch it without all this happening to me? I wouldn't have to take up freebasing Ether to get it out of my mind?

VAMPIRE DIARIES IS BETTER THAN TRUE BLOOD.

Hahaha, I am looking forward to hearing what you think of The Vampire Diaries. It's addicting. But it's also a CW show. So don't expect too much.
