God Bless Betty White

Dads got double-socked by Mother’s Day this year: You have to stay up for a Betty White-hosted “SNL,” but when your child(ren) wake up at 6 a.m., you have to let the wife sleep in, too. I daresay it was worth it, though. “SNL” did what “SNL” does best with Betty White — take one joke and beat it silly — but the foul-mouthed old lady joke had plenty of staying power last night thanks to America’s 88-year-old National Treasure.

The Lawrence Welk cold open was decent, highlighted by the heartfelt ovation for Betty White and, later, Amy Poehler. The monologue — about Facebook — was amusing, too. “Yes, we had poking, but it wasn’t something you did on a computer. It was something you did on a hayride.”

The highlight of the night, really, was the return of Ana Gastayer and Molly Shannon’s NPR radio show, “The Delicious Dish,” where Betty White showed them her muffin. I never thought you could beat Alec Baldwin’s Schweaty Balls, but hearing about Betty White’s muffin squirting in Molly Shannon’s mouth may have been the funniest moment of the night and the season.

Lorne Michaels decided to bring back a lot of the former cast members last night — Tina Fey, Rachel Dratch, Poehler, Shannon, Gastayer, and Maya Rudolph — ostensibly because no one thought Betty White could carry the entire show alone. But hell if that woman wasn’t in every sketch, as well three MacGruber shorts and a pretty great Digital Short (which isn’t online as of this writing) that took the foul-mouthed old lady bit to the death metal extreme: “Happy Mother’s Day, Mother Fuckers!” Bonus points, too, for the surprisingly nice and earnest rendition of “Thank You for Being a Friend,” which can still produce a lump in your throat.

For nostalgia’s sake, the highlight of the night was probably the “Really?!” news segment with three current and former “SNL” anchors: Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Seth Meyers. It’s funny how “SNL” “hasn’t been funny in years” for the last two decades but “SNL” alums are almost always huge hits because they remind us of when the show used to be funny, even if we didn’t think the show was funny then, either.

All in all, a pretty outstanding show, with plenty of highs and per “SNL” custom, plenty of lows, but with Betty White on stage even the lows were mostly amusing. And I bet last night’s show was the highest rated in years.

There’s lots of extras over on Hulu, including a Betty White dress rehearsal skit and a few online exclusives like a Debbie Downer skit that didn’t make the show (Dratch can never catch a break), so check those out. And if you’re just waking up (and especially if you’re a mother) and you haven’t seen the episode entire yet, tell your husband to take a hike while you watch last night’s episode in bed.

Yeah, it was pretty much an hour of Betty White saying dirty things, but goddammit, it was a fantastic hour. I was amazed at Betty's ability to hang in for the whole show at her age.

And I also have to mention that Maya Rudolph as Whitney Houston had me in STITCHES.

This show's still on?

I had forgotten about it, but I TiVo SNL first-run just in case anything actually funny comes up at work on Monday. I caught the last skit with Tina Fey live (which like many promising SNL skits lasted 20% too long), then watched the whole episode on TiVo in about 50 minutes.

It certainly was one trick, but for an 88 year old to have even one trick left in her is pretty good.

That was the best SNL of the last five years in my opinion. Betty White did so well and I loved the nods to so many great sketches past. The "That girl's a lesbian" skit cracked me up and I loved Whitney Houston as well. They touched on the classic census taker sketch (though not quite as well) and Delicious Dish (even better than Baldwin). I stayed home to watch that episode and I wasn't disappointed. It was really only the Spanish talk show thing that didn't land for me and that's a small quibble. Loved it.

I haven't stayed up for SNL in years..Although I made it a point a few months ago to stay awake for Them Crooked Vultures. (Totally worth it) The weekly guest? Pfft..Take 'em or leave 'em..I need my beauty sleep. Overall, the show last night was a B+. White is an old pro and has excellent timing. I was a little disappointed that so many of the sketches focused on her age. "Florence Dusty's Muffin" did out-do Baldwin's "Schweaty Balls" by a mile..especially in crass-factor. Betty is a wonder all on her own but it also shows the viewing public that we'd rather watch a vet, supposedly past her prime, than the most recent supposed "talent".

Hmm...maybe next year, SNL could have a co-host situation with both James Franco and Betty White..That could be dangerously hilarious.

Oh! Also, Jay-Z was pretty excellent, too.

At 88 1/2 Betty still has it, I have to say. She is far far better than many guests who stiltedly read from the teleprompter.

She's pretty nimble too, for her age. How did she manage that backflip in the digital short?

I have to say I would totally watch CSI: Sarasota

I think any night that makes me do the old man laugh (i.e. laughing so hard you wheeze) more than once is A) a rarity with SNL and B) a good episode.

What I loved more than anything was the atmosphere of such respect and love and admiration that pervaded this set, and how much affection and respect everyone had for La Betty. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Betty White should so be this site's mascot. Just replace the site icon of that planet image from Zombieland with a picture of Betty White, grinning, with an assault rifle in one hand and a martini in another. It would be glorious!

I'm going to be the SNL apologist again, but because I'm lazy, I'm going to be brief:

SNL was hilarious last night, and screw you if you don't think last season was fantastic (even if this year has been spotty at best).

Plus, the highlight you missed (other than the Digital Short, which I'm not surprised isn't online yet because they probably have to get the rights to that song) was the Scared Straight sketch, which is always awesome but which last night was especially so.

Betty White shows what it means to be a professional.

And does anyone else think Tina Fey is starting to look like Megan Mullally?

"A yeasty muffin can really ruin your whole day"

Word.

al gore did SNL a big favor when he invented the internet.

Posted by: stopthemadness at May 9, 2010 4:30 PM

Betty said, "The Wizard of Ass!" Twice. And I honestly collapsed to the floor both times. Ten toes up.

And, another time, she said something like, "Yeah, I wouldn't mind being a lesbian. You know what I wouldn't miss? BALLS!" This produced exactly the same reaction by me. My poor laughing wife had to help shovel me back onto the couch for a third time.

Yes, some context with the one-liners would help. But, if you don't know what I am talking about, that's a your problem. Not a mine.

You've got to be kidding. Seriously? That sketch was an embarrassment. I turned on "SNL" when that sketch started, gave it about five minutes, didn't laugh once, cringed several times and switched to "I Eat Your Skin"* (aka "Zombies") on "The It's Alive! Show." I mean, come on, even with the formidable Betty White it was no contest.

And the whole show was like that? Sweet Jesopus, if that's an example of SNL at its funniest I'll never go back.

I'm also not sure I can ever believe you again.

Last nights episode was great and Betty White is amazing. SNL needs to forget about these young stars that have one hit movie/tv show (Taylor Lautner/Blake Lively/January Jones) and focus on stars that actually have comedic timing and can pull off sketch comedy. I would love to see Jane Lynch or Joel McHale host the show.

Posted by: Taylor at May 9, 2010 5:59 PM

I was just over at hulu and could not find this whitney houston skit of which you all speak. Where is it?

Posted by: homeslice at May 9, 2010 7:38 PM

Ooh, Taylor, both of those would be great hosts. Maybe once both of their shows hit their second season?

I loved the reactions of the cast in the Digital Short last night. Everyone's completely flabbergasted and horrified, and there's Jason Sudekis, calmly pulling out his phone to take a photo. Loved it.

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at May 9, 2010 8:37 PM

I think that the boys writing the show were obviously out of their league. Having the former women cast on really highlighted how much funnier the show used to be.

Betty was awesome as host! I teared up when she got that big opening applause, she deserves it. Best episode in a while, though better writers could have given White more than just the slutty old lady stuff to do.

I would also like to nominate Stephen Colbert, Jane Lynch, Carol Burnette, Joel McHale, and William Shatner to host. Fuck all this twilight/tween garbage, get people who would actually do a good job.

No.

Posted by: spazmodeas at May 10, 2010 1:05 AM

Wow, I really thought the comedy threshold was way higher here. I guess this helps explain why "Date Night" pulls $80M B.O.

Posted by: , at May 10, 2010 1:06 AM

Too bad this show goes right back into the toilet without the old cast members.

Posted by: Mick J at May 10, 2010 1:25 AM

homeslice, it was part of the Weekend Update

People always like celebrities, but I think those in uniform deserve more respect. They defend our country and safeguard our policy. Join M i l i t a r y f l i r t i n g.c o m, show your love and respect to our military heroes.

Posted by: lily at May 10, 2010 4:53 AM

Also, everyone on the cast right now is hilarious except Abby Elliot, and anyone who disagrees with me can eat some of their own face and shut it.

Posted by: ChristianH at May 10, 2010 9:25 AM

A shame I missed it, but I was studying for finals. Besides Betty's appearance, it was great having the old (and talented) cast return.

I did catch the last amusing five minutes, but it was tainted because I couldn't tell if Betty White or Kenan Thompson were reading the cue cards. I could see them behind the door. I still love Betty and I know she's up there in age, but that's a pet peeve of mine. Ruins the scene.

Posted by: Brie at May 10, 2010 12:01 PM

Old lady, dirty mouth. Classless, not funny at all.
Betty White just fell into the same old lame SNL trashy stuff.

Posted by: John at May 12, 2010 4:03 AM

I find it interesting how peoples sense of humor can be so different. Shouldn't there be some things that are just universally funny? For someone to say that the lesbian sketch was funny shows just how wacked out this world is.

And why can't i find the whitney/weekend update sketch anywhere on the web!?
