Go 30 Rock! Go 30 Rock!

...and that's about it.

Posted by: Gabs at July 17, 2008 9:06 AM

There are TWO reality show categories?

That crackling sound you hear is my soul drying up and blowing away.

Posted by: TK at July 17, 2008 9:08 AM

What is really incredible about these circle jerk nominations is that every time they come out I fool myself into thinking that they will actually represent the great artistic achievements of the previous year... Then I read the list and I'm reminded that people fucking suck. These circle jerks are only for the simple, the shallow and the connected. You have to love the token nominations that BSG and The Wire receive, wouldn't want to leave on of the best shows ever created off after it's last season, that wouldn't be respectable at all... Fuckers!

Posted by: Ebs at July 17, 2008 9:15 AM

Holly Hunter -- "Savage Grace"

Should be "Saving Grace." It's that TNT show, correct?

Bah. Noted and corrected. Many thanks. -- DR

Posted by: Nika at July 17, 2008 9:16 AM

Seriously? Dancing With the Stars instead of So You Think You Can Dance? Really?

NPH! Suit up, baby. You're totally taking it.

Posted by: Anastasia Beaverhausen at July 17, 2008 9:18 AM

Squeee!! for Pushing Daisies getting those nominations.

Boo for The Wire not getting more.

p.s. I believe Holly Hunter's show is called "Saving Grace", and I don't believe she has sex with her son in it.

Posted by: feramones at July 17, 2008 9:20 AM

Bah, Nika beat me to the correction.

And Anastasia Beaverhausen, I share in your outrage over SYTYCD getting snubbed!

Posted by: feramones at July 17, 2008 9:21 AM

I'm hoping for Bryan Cranston. He acts the shit out of Breaking Bad.

Posted by: Will at July 17, 2008 9:23 AM

does anyone watch the emmys? don't we all just read the nominations, sigh in disappointment or howl in rage, and then read the list of winners the morning after?

Posted by: splinter at July 17, 2008 9:32 AM

I barely paid attention to this shit anyway, but now that "The Wire" has been completely screwed out of any major consideration in its last season, I'm totally done. Sure this last season was probably the worst of the bunch, but so what?
At least the Oscars had the decency to give LOTR love after the last film and Scorcese an Oscar before he was fucking dead.
Long live Omar!

Posted by: Kballs at July 17, 2008 9:32 AM

I'm gunning for HH in Saving Grace. Hunter plays dysfunctional so well. While you're busy hating her character for being so fucked up, you fall in love with her because she's so fragile.

Posted by: Pea at July 17, 2008 9:32 AM

Go, Mad Men, BSG and The Wire! Go Lee Pace and Kristin Chenowith for Pushing Daisies!

Go 30 Rock!

Go Dexter! Dexter should win for Hottest British Chick. It's been a terribly undersupported category.

Posted by: karstark at July 17, 2008 9:35 AM

Why is best writing not synonymous with... best?

Posted by: J_Capri at July 17, 2008 9:49 AM

Squee seconded for Pushing Daisies getting some love. And NPH for the win!

Posted by: MG at July 17, 2008 9:53 AM

Definitely sad to see NO love for any of the FNL cast - at the very least Connie Britton should be nominated for that scene where her and Julie were fighting over whether Julie should have sex. That broke my heart ten thousand ways. Connie Britton is gold.

Also sad to see that neither Kristen Bell or Enrico Colantino (spelling) got a nod for V. Mars. Perfect acting by both for the majority of the series.

DOes anyone know if any of these actors made the final 11 in their categories?

Posted by: petalfrog at July 17, 2008 9:58 AM

I just cannot take the Emmys seriously with some of the people up for awards. There are a few great actors among them, but the inclusion of some really awful actors takes away any credibility.

Posted by: Cindy at July 17, 2008 10:01 AM

Why is best writing not synonymous with... best?

Yeah, whoever made this list of nominees is being pretty elastic with their definition of "best". This is going to be something that the academy will look at 10 years from now and say "Dear God, we lost ALL objectivity". Why not just call it "favorites"? Come on!!

Posted by: Jay at July 17, 2008 10:02 AM

"Dirty Jobs"

Oh please let Mike Rowe win so that I can hear the bucket o' awesome that would be his victory speech. I love Mike Rowe.

Yah! for Antiques Roadshow. I swear I am not a 90 year old woman.

If American Idol wins reality competition, I will have that long awaited stroke. That show is an insult to intelligence and all that is good.

Anyone want to make a bet that John Adams will win Best Miniseries?

Posted by: Melody at July 17, 2008 10:05 AM

Right, feramones? I mean please...which is a better show... washed up d-listers attempting to make some kind of sad comeback, or a bunch of young people who are truly passionate about dance, and good at it, and actually care if they make it anywhere? Grr.

P.S. OT but where's Wade this season? He didn't go and get "too big" for the show, did he? I'm assuming Shane hasn't been there because of Dance Crew...

Posted by: Anastasia Beaverhausen at July 17, 2008 10:05 AM

As long as Tin Fey and Lee Pace take home their well-deserved trophies, I have nothing to say.

Oh, and maybe throw Hugh Laurie a bone.

Posted by: Nevermore at July 17, 2008 10:22 AM

I don't know why Wade hasn't been around, but I'd heard before the season started that he wasn't going to be doing much this time. The rumor is that there is some friction with Nigel because he refuses to pay to use the routines on the dance tour. I really miss Wade though. Shane can only do the group numbers because his contract with Dance Crew won't allow him to appear on tv for another dance show.

Posted by: Aubrey at July 17, 2008 10:29 AM

meh

"I mean please...which is a better show... washed up d-listers attempting to make some kind of sad comeback, or a bunch of young people who are truly passionate about dance, and good at it, and actually care if they make it anywhere? Grr."

Damn straight!!! Indeed!!
Who is to blame for this debacle? I feel like slapping somebody.

Posted by: Loob at July 17, 2008 10:30 AM

Kristen Chenowith, Lee Pace, NPH, Michael Emerson & Michael C. Hall, baby!!!! WOO-HOOOOO! It just sucks that most everything was chopped to hell and back because of the writer's strike. And, I so agree with Melody. Please, Godtopus, let Dirty Jobs win so Mike Rowe can show those overdressed, overteased, overhighlighted reality pukes how its done!

Posted by: dammitjanet at July 17, 2008 10:31 AM

I really don't understand why "Best Reality Competition" is a category, but I'm also a fuddy-duddy.

Huzzah for Dexter getting props - my husband and I adore that show.

I guess I'm dumbfounded that nobody from the incredible "The Wire" cast got nominated for a best acting award. Yes, it's an ensemble show where everybody's a supporting character, but they couldn't pick even ONE person from the cast to nominate? Bubbles with the AA speech, for God's sake? I swear that show gets penalized because it's too damned good.

Posted by: samantha t at July 17, 2008 10:35 AM

"Damages" started to irritate the hell out of me but I kept watching for the wonder that was Ted Danson's performance. I had never formed even the thought that so-and-so should win an Emmy. Half-way through the show, I was telling anyone who would listen that Danson damn well better get an Emmy. Simply Amazing.

Posted by: julied at July 17, 2008 10:36 AM

Christopher Meloni got screwed again.

Two and a Half Men is paying someone. And no Burn Notice?! Ack. :(

Posted by: Loob at July 17, 2008 10:38 AM

Best Drama -- Boston Legal? I thought Boston Legal was a comedy.

Posted by: BWeaves at July 17, 2008 10:44 AM

Janet, you know, if Mike Rowe does win, he will make a very amusing speech.

Hooray for intelligent shows that make you learn something.

Does anyone watch Project Runway or is that just me?

Posted by: Melody at July 17, 2008 10:51 AM

Now that you mention it, Aubrey, I seem to remember hearing something about some "feud" with Nigel. It's a shame, he's just so damn good. And I actually miss Shane alot, too... he's awesome. I started out iffy on him but he really grew on me.

Let's get slapping, Loob.

oh, and just to stay even remotely on topic... Emmys!

Posted by: Anastasia Beaverhausen at July 17, 2008 10:56 AM

I love Runway, Melody. Although apparently it started last night and i had no idea...

Posted by: Anastasia Beaverhausen at July 17, 2008 10:59 AM

And once again...science fiction and the people who act in SF shows are worthy of any kind of attention. It's amazing they even bothered with a writing nod in BSG's direction.

Oh well, the only thing the Emmys are good for is the couple of days after when Heather and Jessica over at Go Fug have themselves a good ol' time with the red carpet fug.

Posted by: telesilla at July 17, 2008 11:01 AM

I was a little disturbed not to see Michael Emerson in the best actor category, but then I saw him in the best supporting actor category and felt better. People may have issues with the best drama category but I'm pretty happy with the best comedy nominees, except for the one crap fest that somehow passes for a quality show each year. I don't have to actually type out it's name, right? Mediocrity representing!

'Which one of these things is not like the other...'

Posted by: katy at July 17, 2008 11:02 AM

*sighs* I meant "science fiction and the people who act in SF shows AREN'T worthy of any kind of attention."

Doh.

Posted by: telesilla at July 17, 2008 11:02 AM

Anastasia, Season 4 of Dance has only just started here in Australia, and I was wondering am I going to see anyone gorgeous from last year (like Pasha) in a guest spot? Like as guest choreographer or something? :D

Posted by: Loob at July 17, 2008 11:05 AM

Anastasia, I love the name by the way. It should replay 85 times and will replay before next week's episode. It does come on an hour earlier this season. This season's cast is more eclectic than previous, I think. There is a heavy representation of the crazy on display, which should make for a good season.

Posted by: Melody at July 17, 2008 11:06 AM

what is it with them and boston legal. It makes a mockery of the awards that it is so repeatedly successful.

Posted by: lonny at July 17, 2008 11:11 AM

Dear Emmy People,

Fuck you. No, really. Fuck you.

Posted by: Brian at July 17, 2008 11:13 AM

William Shatner for supporting actor!

You can't go wrong with the Shatman.

Posted by: Dariuss at July 17, 2008 11:13 AM

This may make me a loan voice but yay Cranford!
Also yay for Hugh laurie and Michael C Hall.

Posted by: Katie at July 17, 2008 11:17 AM

Indeed, Loob, indeed. Pasha, Anya, Benji, Lacey, and (drool) Dmitri.

Phew... [fans self because of she's got the vapors]

Posted by: jM at July 17, 2008 11:21 AM

I fully agree that Dancing with the Stars is a total crapfest compared to SYTYCD. You might be a little happier to know, however, that 3 of the numbers from SYTYCD Season 3 were nominated for Best Choreography. They are the hummingbird and flower routine by Wade Robson, the table routine (sweet dreams are made of these) by Mandy Moore, and the Transformers/"Fuego" group routine that Shane Sparks did. As I'm sure you all know, Mia Michaels won in this category last year for the park bench routine with Heidi and Travis. Yes, I'm just a little obsessed. But only a little.

Also, yay Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Lee Pace, and Neil....wait for it....Patrick Harris!

Posted by: clarkie at July 17, 2008 11:26 AM

Good to see Pushing Daisies getting some love.

Posted by: Kevin Longrie at July 17, 2008 11:34 AM

Interesting. There are actually some good nominations. Could it be that they're learning that not everyone likes crap?

Go House!

Posted by: Shadows of Dakaron at July 17, 2008 11:34 AM

Hmmm...I was reading until I hit Two and a Half Men, realized this was a cruel joke on humanity, and decided to see if there was anything worth snacking on in the breakroom.

Did that happen to anyone else?

Posted by: Wednesday at July 17, 2008 11:36 AM

Yes! Go Flight of the Conchords!

Posted by: holamiis at July 17, 2008 11:39 AM

Actually, Wednesday, I'm quite the fan of Two and a Half Men. I've always been a fan of Charlie Sheen (despite all the negative press about him), and I think this is Jon Cryer's best role since "Ducky". Give it a shot. It took my wife, Connie, a little time to get used to it, but now she's a big a fan as I am!

Posted by: Conrad (last name withheld) at July 17, 2008 11:40 AM

Um, excuse me? No Jenna Fischer for Supporting Actress? Who the fuck is Holland Taylor? That sounds like a GD shopping boutique, not a person. And how the fuck do Boston Legal and Two and a Half Men keep getting nominated? There is no logical reason Friday Night Lights should not be dominating these awards- the fact that Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton aren't nominated takes this farce to an entirely new level of ridiculousness. Really, William Shatner put in better performances than Gaius Charles or Zach Gilford? What a bunch of horseshit. Why not just suck David E. Kelley off on stage and get it over with, Emmy fuckheads.

And one more "fuck" for good measure, I think.

Posted by: Abe Froman at July 17, 2008 11:45 AM

Go Antiques Roadshow! PBS rules over ya!

Posted by: brouhaha at July 17, 2008 11:45 AM

I was reading until I hit Two and a Half Men, and then I realized that there is no God, and that there is a malevolent force, an Anit-God that hates us all and plagues us with suffering and drives the universe closer and closer to its own destruction with every passing second.

Did that happen to anyone else?

Posted by: TK at July 17, 2008 11:49 AM

No Offense, Conrad I'm sure the show has it's charm. BUT! If Two and a Half Men wins another award I will personally do whatever is necessary (wink wink, Skitt) to get the keys to the MurderTank and personally unleash a heretofore unknown level of destruction on the television industry.

Posted by: Rex at July 17, 2008 11:50 AM

Abe, the reason T&HM keeps getting nominated is because it's probably one of the only family-friendly shows on television. The writing is phenomenal, the actors are top-notch, and it's a show I can watch with my wife & kids. Granted, there are some shows that got the "shaft" but then again, you can't please everybody all of the time!

Posted by: Conrad (last name withheld) at July 17, 2008 11:51 AM

Ohmigodohmigodohmigodohmigodohmigod!!
Squee!
hehehehe That'll be so awesome!

Clarkie, I'm a little bit bummed that Benji's West Coast Swing routine didn't get nominated, but those others are okaaay. ;)

Posted by: Loob at July 17, 2008 11:51 AM

Sorry jM, I fergot the doovalackeys. ""

Posted by: Loob at July 17, 2008 11:55 AM

Blair Underwood got shafted. I thought he was riveting in In Treatment. Arrogant, charisma, conflicted. Someone really squirming under the microscope.

The teenager was amazing too but I guess she's too young to get a nod.

Go Dianne Wiest Go!

Posted by: amanda47 at July 17, 2008 11:56 AM

Loob: Pasha and Anya choreograph a salsa (or a cha cha - I can't remember which) and assist Mia in a contemporary. Benji also does a West Coast Swing.

(It would be Pasha who prompts me out of lurker-dom)

Posted by: PallasJay at July 17, 2008 11:57 AM

snort... whatever. Who watches the Emmys anymore?

LOSERS, that's who.

as for the Best Reality Program category...

what about 'Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations' or 'Deadliest Catch'?

Posted by: Vi at July 17, 2008 11:58 AM

I was reading until I hit Two and a Half Men, and then I realized that there is no God..Did that happen to anyone else?

Why, yes, TK. My eyeballs receded further into my skull and I started spouting apocalyptic prophecies of death and destruction raining down on the unworthy as McG and Uwe Boll cavorted in the nude together and Bob Dole walked around with erection that he used to spit hapless passerbys. Then again, that's every Thursday afternoon, so I'm ahead of the curve today.

Posted by: Shadows of Dakaron at July 17, 2008 11:58 AM

Conrad, I'm gonna put this as delicately as possible - YOU ARE A DOUCHBAG WHO HAS NO BUSINESS WATCHING ANYTHING!

Sweet Christ, if you were the ruler of TV Town, we' d all be watching the friggin' Waltons and Kate & Allie twenty-four hours a day. Need proof? You own Everybody Loves Raymond. Not just a season, mind you - YOU OWN THE WHOLE GODDAMED SERIES! Need additional proof? You also own the last season of Roseanne (a show that should've had a bullet put in it's skull 3 years prior to ending). In fact, I'm pretty sure you picked it up after returning the goddamed Strangers With Candy dvd I gave you for Christmas... As I recall, after opening my gift, you said something along the lines of "Oh, I'm not big on crude humor" (you actually used finger quotes when you said "crude")... Douche...

Posted by: Skittimus Maximus at July 17, 2008 12:01 PM

I still can't believe that Mary McDonnell is snubbed every god damned year, but I've come to expect this from the Emmy's anyway. They still nominate Monk and Boston legal without fail, so obviously the voters enjoy the crunchy bitterness of eating paint chips.

Posted by: Julie at July 17, 2008 12:01 PM

TK, that would have happened to me, but I did not read that as my eyes were struck by a temporary episode of blindness that prevented me from seeing it. That often occurs when the possibility of a blinding attack of rage is near.

Vi, the only reason I can think against Bourdain (not personal reasons of course, as I watch his show every week, but moronic Emmy reasons) is that Bourdain isn't exactly everyone's style. He is anti-establishment, brash, bold, and very outspoken. He is most of the things that the Emmy's do not like. I still adore the man and his rant about the beautifying of Times Square is still a personal favorite, along with the entire Iceland episode.

Eep!! I'm going to be squeeing all night now, with no chance of sleep at all!
That's fantastic and I can't possibly wait. I'm so glad you guys told me because I will be crazy vigilant to record every single second.
Luckily, I also have a dvd of last season with all the best bits and I can watch it in a continual loop, while I wait. Ahhh. It's like the crack.

Posted by: Loob at July 17, 2008 12:07 PM

I briefly contemplated murderous rage, but ultimately opted for the snacks.

I'm trying to cut back on superfluous existential angst.

Posted by: Wednesday at July 17, 2008 12:09 PM

OK, I'm glad "Pushing Daisies" got some "love" as you all call it, but I am neither satisfied nor amused (and, unfortunately, not surprised) that it was not nominated for "Best Comedy" while the shit-tastic "Two and Half Men" and increasingly disappointing "Entourage" were. Plus, what's with calling "Boston Legal" as a "Drama"? Add that to the heinous omission of all things FNL, and the Emmys are falling into step with the black hole of awards shows - the People's Choice Awards. They can omit all the "Desperate Housewives" and "Grey's Anatomy" they want, but they'll always be irrelevant to me.

This one belongs in an Awesome Rants Honours List thingy.

Posted by: Loob at July 17, 2008 12:18 PM

YAY LEE PACE YAY.

Ahem.

That aside...does anyone else think the Emmy folks have their tongues just a bit too far up Tina Fey's ass? Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of hers and I think 30 Rock really is the best comedy on TV right now, but her name appears on the official nomination list like 10 times (between 30 Rock and her SNL hosting gig this season). I'd be a bit embarrassed were I Tina...but I'm not, so I'll shut up now.

Posted by: Another Jen at July 17, 2008 12:18 PM

I hope "Top Chef" win, I love that show especially this past season with those two lesbian chefs. I'm not a fan of Anthony Bourdain at all, I think he's a world class prick. Even though "The Wire" was the best show on t.v. I doubt that the American white man will give it it's place in the sun. I was planning a special comment about Heath Ledger, but I've changed my mind and instead I will be doing a special comment on Brendan Fraser's new movie "The Mummy" when Pajiba get around to reviewing it. I will be going out of town next week, I have to fly up to New York to take care of some legal issues. Bye.

"what about 'Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations' or 'Deadliest Catch'? "

Posted by: Vi at July 17, 2008 11:58 AM

-------------------------------------------------

Vi: Dealiest Catch was nominated, but in the Outstanding Nonfiction Series category. I just recently started watching that show and am fascinated although it's somewhat repetitive. The thing is, they are repetitively CRAZY to do what they do, so I'm riveted.

Posted by: clarkie at July 17, 2008 12:21 PM

obviously meant "DEADLIEST Catch". Dealiest catch sounds sketchy.

Posted by: clarkie at July 17, 2008 12:23 PM

Oooohoh, thanks clarkie, I'd no idea. That's good news. that hummingbird piece was A-MAZ-ING. and I thought that table thing was underrated... Neil was so hot in that. (Sabra was too, but he was just on through that whole piece.)

looks like you got an answer before I made it back again Loob.... mmmmm Dmitri. And mmmmmm Pasha. (Can you tell I have a thing for the Russians?) right there with you fanning, jM.

P.S. Melody, as soon as I posted I said to myself, "it's Bravo, duhr. It'll be on over and over again until the next ep." Lots of crazy, huh? Outstanding. (Also, I'm terrible at clever names. I stole it form Will & Grace. It's one of Karen's aliases.)

Posted by: Anastasia Beaverhausen at July 17, 2008 12:25 PM

Pookie, are you even allowed to leave the state? Does your PO know about this?

Posted by: jM at July 17, 2008 12:26 PM

I'm just so THRILLED that The Wire DOUBLED its total number of Emmy nominations! The best drama in television history used to only have one nomination in its entire history, but now it has TWO! Oh, happy FUCKING day!!!

Posted by: Todd at July 17, 2008 12:28 PM

Michael Emerson for the win! His work in Lost has at times been nothing sort of breathtaking.

Posted by: Katherine at July 17, 2008 12:28 PM

The only "Deadliest Catch" I know of was when I touched my willie to the pan at a local pub. BWA-HAR-DE-HAR! HEEEEY-OOOOHHHH!

...In all seriousness though - you're still a douchebag Conrad...

Is there an Emmy for foxy hostess? I'd like to throw my two cents in for Padme from Top Chef. She makes my dingle tingle.

Posted by: Skittimus Maximus at July 17, 2008 12:29 PM

HOLY SHIT, FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS GOT A NOMINATION! WOO!!!

But seriously, Battlestar Galactica gets shafted every f***ing year. I'm glad to see they at least got a nod for their superb writing, but I don't expect them to win. In fact, of the few shows on this list that I do watch, the only one I believe has a chance with the hacks who pick these awards is Mary-Louise Parker for Weeds (and she definitely deserves it).

And I don't care what anyone says, I think 30 Rock is one of the dumbest f***ing shows in the history of comedy. I'd almost rather watch Two and a Half Men for a whole day than one episode of 30 Rock. As critical darlings go, I got Arrested Development, I got Seinfeld, I get The Simpsons. But I will never see why people like 30 Rock.

Posted by: ChristianH at July 17, 2008 12:29 PM

I stole it form Will & Grace. It's one of Karen's aliases.

I figured that, but I did not want to ask. Karen was my favorite character on that show.

F*ck all of this.

Lipstick Jungle was robbed.

Posted by: David at July 17, 2008 12:31 PM

I'm with David on that one. Lipstick Jungle was the only show that made me question my existence... Any show that can do that gets a thumbs-up from me.

Why does LOST always get the shaft during Emmy nomination time? Seriously, this season was nothing short of a mind-fuck.

Posted by: Faye at July 17, 2008 12:36 PM

I think they should have a new category for the best internet shows. There is alot of good stuff out there with my personal favorite being DFT News which can be found at http://www.digitalfuntown.com/homepage.php if you want to take a look.

Posted by: Billy at July 17, 2008 12:43 PM

My sincere take on this is that no TV fans should ever waste a minute thinking about the Emmy nominations, the ceremony or anything related. I mean, why should we praise winners when the whole thing is all so flawed? The winning part doesn't deserve anything, it should just be considered as flawed as anything else.

Great people and shows are always left out, not great anything is awarded stuff year in, year out...

Really, just forget this sham even exists.

Posted by: gargumma at July 17, 2008 12:53 PM

I'm with gargumma on that one. The Emmys are the only awards program that makes me question my existence... Any awards show that can do that gets the finger from me.

Posted by: Skittimus Maximus at July 17, 2008 12:56 PM

Once again the most underwatched, under-rated comedy on TV is looked over. How does It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia not get noms for Best Comedy, Best Writing, and Best Supporting acting by both Danny DeVito and Charlie Day?

Posted by: Don at July 17, 2008 1:02 PM

Hells yes for FotC...and also, no Jenna Fischer? What? I can't believe Dancing with the Stars got dibs over So You Think You Can Dance...those kids are f-ing AMAZING. Mark Kanemura from this season is from a local dance company in my hometown! I don't need to see D-Listers stumbling around and totally being showed up by their professional counterparts. Blech.

Posted by: Corinna at July 17, 2008 1:04 PM

Wow. The only reality competition that I watch (SoYouThinkYouCanDance) isn't on that list.

EPOCH FAIL!

Ah. Got my little bit of crap geek humor out.

Nice to see some love for Lost, Two and a Half Men, Extreme Makeover Home Edition, Dancing with the Stars, Charlie Sheen, Christina Applegate (hot), Mariska Hargitay (hot), Jon Cryer, Jean Smart and Sandra Oh (hot). Woo wee.

Posted by: sosumi at July 17, 2008 1:09 PM

Jon Hamm...Mad Men...this news has made my day...fingers crossed that Mad Men wins at least one award.

Posted by: Neena at July 17, 2008 1:23 PM

Finally!! Neil Patrick Harris!!! He has made me laugh out loud more than any single person on tv. While NPH greatly deserves this nomination, where is the love for How I Met Your Mother? That has to be one of the best traditional format sitcoms in the past 10 years. He is perfect on the show, and the cast gels perfectly. . . Why oh why does Two and a Half Men get noticed before them? Do the people that vote on this owe charlie sheen money from a long while back? Did they do coke and hookers together and bond for all eternity? I know there are a lot of people that vote on this, but, then again, charlie has done a lot of coke and hookers. meh. . .

Posted by: adam at July 17, 2008 1:35 PM

Anastasia (awesome name by the way), as Nigel pointed out that should be Dancing with the "Celebrities", and there should be some props also to Cat Deeley as hostess. Shane's out b/c of Dance Crew but he did a guest choreograph of (I think) the Top 18 group dance. Pity, but life goes on. SYTYCDDR's inherently better than the "celebrities" since there's such a broad range of pairings and styles, and it's has-been-free.

And to everyone getting stabby over how the truly great shows, writers, and actors got snubbed again, well, let me remind you of a Whedon-shaped ray of sunshine for your perpetually disappointed lives: http://www.drhorrible.com/ - yes, Mal can sing. It has NPH. It comes in 3 parts (the first 2 are up now), and it all goes away (off-line, but to DVD) after Sunday. Begone!

Posted by: lordhelmet at July 17, 2008 1:39 PM

Mary McDonnell is not here! ROBBING BASTARDS!!!

And I'm sorry, but - finally - a writing nom but it's too fucking late.
I'm a Battlestar fan but Season's 4 writing has been CACK! It should have been on the list 2 seasons ago.

I am depressed.

Posted by: CarpeJugulum at July 17, 2008 1:53 PM

Holy crap... Tin Man?!

I was so looking forward to that and it is so, so bad.

Who sold their soul to get that piece of shit on the list? Oh wait...

Posted by: CarpeJugulum at July 17, 2008 1:57 PM

Justin Kirk, for making a woman orgasm three times with his foot.

Worth a god damn nomination at least. Weeds gets hosed every year.

Posted by: Cory at July 17, 2008 1:59 PM

No love for BSG- bullshit. Its the best show on TV right now...oh wait I guess the Sci Fi Channel doesn't "count" as TV.
Edward James Olmos blows everyone Under "Best Actor in a Drama" away. Fucking James Spader?!

What about USA's Burn Notice or Psyche?

Or Joss Whedon's Office Episode?

Or Heroes- Even if the second season wasn't as great, its still better than Boston Legal.

WHATEVER...I don't care.

Posted by: Jossistheman at July 17, 2008 2:07 PM

Waitaminnit! My Life On The D-List and Intervention get nominated over Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations??? Fuck you, Emmys! Bring back the Cable ACE Awards!!!

Posted by: David at July 17, 2008 2:08 PM

BSG! BSG! BSG!
The only good thing about bumping the end to 2009 is that it will have a shot at next year's emmy's. (right?)

And let me tell YOU something, Pajiba...you DAMN WELL better be putting Season 1 or 2 of BSG on the top tv seasons list. Because if you don't...there will be rioting. Rioting by all of us obsessive-compulsive BSGers who never get the love we deserve. We who have leggy invisible blondes whispering in our ears, we who dine on synthesized algae and box our way through unresolved sexual tension. We are all that remain...and we are pissed that we don't get more love. LOVE US, PAJIBA!!

Posted by: meh at July 17, 2008 2:20 PM

I'm pretty pissed that "The Riches" was locked out. It's one of the best dramas of the past two seasons.

Posted by: Ginger at July 17, 2008 2:29 PM

Goddamn, I hate awards season. They toss out a few good noms and then push the favorites, suckage or not.

However, it is about damn time Dexter and C. Micheal Hall got some love. How many bodies does a man have to go through to get some respect? No one appriciates hard work anymore. THAT'S what's wrong with this country.

Posted by: TWoP Fan at July 17, 2008 2:32 PM

it is so goddamn INSULTING that fucking "Two And a Half Men" gets nominated for ANYTHING, let alone the major awards. Just give it to "According to Jim", why don't you? It'd still smack of insult, but at least we'd know you were just joking.

Grr. I am irrationally angry about this.

There is an "reality show host" category?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?

WHY?

Posted by: Melody at July 17, 2008 3:41 PM

I'm not sure what all the anger is about, I thought the nominations were pretty dead on. I was a little disappointed that American Idol got a nod over Survivor, but at least Jeff Probst was nominated. So, Survivor has that going for it, which is nice. Jossistheman - Burn Notice? Really? Ugh.

Posted by: sosumi at July 17, 2008 3:43 PM

Melody - There is a reality show host category and the nominees are:

American Idol - Ryan Seacrest, Host
Dancing With The Stars -Tom Bergeron, Host
Deal Or No Deal - Howie Mandel, Host
Project Runway - Heidi Klum, Host
Survivor - Jeff Probst, Host

Posted by: sosumi at July 17, 2008 3:48 PM

Sosumi, the anger is over the missing person. Where is Phil of "The Amazing Race"?

Where?

Posted by: Melody at July 17, 2008 3:54 PM

Melody - I feel your pain. But, Phil is clearly a Jeff wannabe.

Posted by: sosumi at July 17, 2008 3:55 PM

I just finished watching the first season of "30 Rock," which I'd been putting off for fear that I would love it and become addicted to it. Which of course is what happened. But I have to say that even though the show is funny as hell, what I really love about it is that it's relatable. So much of it speaks to me in a true-to-my-own-life sort of way, and I'm a copy editor living in Idaho, for god's sake. IDAHO, people!

Posted by: Cady at July 17, 2008 5:38 PM

Hey, thanks for the link, lordhelmet, I was planning to check out Part II after catching up on the Emmy Noms. You rock!

Posted by: MO(meaux) at July 17, 2008 5:58 PM

Wow, universal hate for Boston Legal shocks me given that the show repeatedly produces great individual episodes. If you don't like the sex doll molded to look like Candace Bergen then I don't like you.

Also, this may point to the reason I differ so markedly with the other Pajiba posters. Boston Legal is famously for being a show with middling ratings but being tremendously important for advertising purposes because it has the highest average income demographic on television.

I'm rich and I like it. You all hate it. I can only conclude you're poor. This explains everything. Would you like a welfare check or should I just write it out to cash?

Posted by: Sirkickyass at July 17, 2008 9:13 PM

"I'm rich and I like it."

You also mentioned you had a *friend*, earlier. Clearly, everything you say is shenanigans.

Posted by: Loob at July 17, 2008 10:34 PM

I know I shouldn't be surprised/shocked/outraged by the continued overlooking of the greatness that is Friday Night Lights, but I can't help it. What the hell??!!! Kyle Chandler, Connie Britton, Zach Gilford, Gaius Charles, Adrienne Palicki, etc. all deserve to be recognized for their outstanding work. Yeah, the murder plotline pissed me off just as much as everyone else, but the acting never suffered. I will not be watching the Emmys again this year, and I'd like to know who exactly you have to blow on the nominating committee for deserving actors to get the recognition they've earned.

Posted by: Austin at July 17, 2008 11:04 PM

Where the fuck are the writing nominations for House???

Posted by: Maryscott O'Connor at July 18, 2008 1:58 AM

I mean why nominate the wire for anything other than writing right? It is only the best television drama in 30 fucking years. Fuck it, lets throw House and Boston Legal on there again and maybe that will finally stop creative minds from creating refreshing and moving works. Fucking silly.

Posted by: Gamal at July 18, 2008 4:09 AM

"I'm rich and I like [Boston Legal]. You all hate it. I can only conclude you're poor."

Whoa, SirK aren't you a lawyer or something? And that's your idea of logical thinking?

Well in that case: I'm a reasonably intelligent gal and I don't really care that you're rich. You obviously do. I can only conclude that you're an idiot.

But do feel free to send me money. As I said, I'm reasonably intelligent.

Alec Baldwin for the win.

Posted by: Melody at July 18, 2008 10:54 AM

I'm sure this has already been beat to death, but how the fuck did Two and a Half Men get nominated in every category possible?!?!

Most of the other noms this year are pretty tolerable - yay, no Desparate Housefugs, and the only Gray's nod is going to one of the few good actors on the show, for a change.

Posted by: that girl at July 18, 2008 12:52 PM

That is such BS. Phil is a much better host that Jeff "I date contestants" Probst.

Oh, puhlease. Anybody could take Phil's place, he adds absolutely nothing to the show. Not that it's his fault, it's just the way the show is setup. Please god, just don't let Howie Mandel win.

Posted by: sosumi at July 18, 2008 1:55 PM

Posted by: Sirkickyass at July 18, 2008 4:06 PM

But you are still sending us money, right?

Posted by: MO(meaux) at July 19, 2008 7:10 AM

Alec Baldwin in 30 Rock is sheer perfection! I only watch 30 Rock because of him and his relationship with "Lemon" (and calling her Lemon all the time is friggin the funniest thing on the show as well)...That being said 30 Rock has a great chance at winning the best comedy category. Up against Curb though...but Curb wasn't so good until last season (that was hilarious! esp. the last episode!). They should get Larry David on 30 Rock as a cameo, that would seal the deal!

Posted by: pa at July 19, 2008 7:47 PM

Its between Laurie and Cranston for best actor in a drama. Spader is always great, Dexter and Mad Men are fantastic shows and Gabriel Byrne is making waves with his new show... but in an award that isolates acting chops, Hugh Laurie and Bryan Cranston stand alone. I give the nod to Hugh as House because he's been so consistantly superlative for so long.

I fixed the washing machine. I tried this a few weeks back and nothing worked right then (got it working though), but today the thing just fell apart again. I popped open the front cover, the motor was (this time) easy to remove, I super-glued the bottom pulley back together, and it was running again in 30 minutes. The squeak and rattle are gone.
