Matthew Broderick and ... Omar?

Wonderful World Trailer / TK

So, here’s the trailer for Wonderful World, a film I’d never heard of until, well, until I saw this trailer. It’s about a divorced, misanthropic malcontent who’s frustrated with people and the world around him, taking what little pleasure he can in his chess games with his Senegalese roommate. One day, his roommate becomes sick, and his sister arrives from Senegal to care for him. Of course, he falls for the girl, learns to love life, and blah blah blah. It’s the kind of relentlessly schmaltzy, triumph-of-the-human-spirit, friendship-and-love-conquers-all crap plot that I like to roll my eyes at and complain about.

Except, of course, that I’m completely full of shit. It’s also a fairly captivating trailer, with an absolutely stellar cast, and the movie looks positively lovely. Matthew Broderick plays the main character, Ben, and Michael K. Williams plays Ibu, his friend and roommate. Williams is, of course, none other than Omar of “The Wire” fame, which is more than enough reason to see the film, and I’m always in the mood for Broderick — I just caught his episode of “30 Rock” for the first time and remembered once again how much I love the guy. Although it’s a little disconcerting to see Williams in a softer, more sentimental role. Ibu’s sister, Khadi, is played by Sanaa Lathan, who does not get nearly enough good roles — the last thing I saw her in was the abysmal Alien vs. Predator that Paul W.S. Anderson managed to completely botch.

In any event, it’s good to see Williams getting different parts — he’s a stellar actor and I’d like to see him eventually be recognized on his own, and not just as Omar. It’s written and helmed by first-time director Joshua Goldin (who is apparently a good friend of Broderick’s), best known to-date for writing the screenplay to Sam Raimi’s Darkman of all things. It’s been bopping around film festivals all year, and will finally be released in January of 2010.

In any event, I am unable to resist its rampaging charm.

"rampaging charm" - nice. We need more of that.

Fine, fine, fine. I'll go. TK, you're an ass. There. I've said it.

Don't make me come over there. I'll turn this whole website around if you don't all have a damn good Thanksgiving.

This looks nice. Broderick can be kind of hit or miss lately (emphasis on the miss), but he's still Ferris, and I will always support Ferris.

Speaking of characters from The Wire, did anyone catch Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations this week? It was a repeat of the one where he hangs out with Snoop in Baltimore. I'd never seen it, and she is pretty cool in real life.

Dammit TK, I'm trying to maintain a stabby frame of mind here.

No one else is suspicious of the January release date?

That's normally not a good sign with a film that looks a bit Oscar baity. It normally means it's mindlessly mediocre, hopelessly misguided, or too strange to make any semblance of sense. Unless it's doing a slow roll out starting mid/late-December and hoping for the best.

That said, I'm a Matthew Broderick fan. I think, on stage and on film, he's pretty underrated. He mostly chooses off-beat projects no one is interested in and does a fine job. I'll eventually get to this one.

God I love me some Sanaa Lathan, she’s my favorite actress in the whole wide world. I kinda feel sorry for Broderick though, he has to be suffering silently in that cold fuckless marriage with horse face. I bet this fucking guy is jerking off fifty times a day with that rock hard cock of his.

The guy with the big hair in the trailer is Dan Zanes. I know this because I'm the uncle of small children.

"Just because I am giving you a roof over your head doesn't mean you have to cook for me."

Fuck that, since when? If I am putting you up, cook Bitch!

I cannot lie: I just pictured LindsEy saying that to Sanaa Lathan, and it got very hot.

And not from the cooking. Oh the pictures in my mind.

... a misanthropic malcontent who’s frustrated with people and the world around him.

Throw in some kind of alcohol, and I think you've described the whole Pajiba demographic.

Awww, Matthew Broderick. I'll watch it.

Also, Ashes, that is so very true.

I don't think I can watch this, due to that car-towing scene alone. It just filled me with so much rage. "Oh, you should have thought of that before you parked illegally." *sets jerk aflame* Maybe you should have thought of that before wearing non-fire-retardant pants this morning.

Nothing makes me angrier than self-righteous, ego-centric jerkoffs.

"Non-fire-retardant pants".

*Snort!*

I can't see Matthew Broderick as anything but two characters: young Matt is Ferris, older Matt is Mr. McAllister. Those two images override anything else.

OK, I'll give in on this one. You didn't get me with Ben Stiller, but I'll take Broderick. Fine. Try to make me feel all warm and fuzzy the day before Slapsgiving. Why don't you just hug me or something.

Bitches.

Glad I could help Vermillion. I'm here to serve.
