William H. Macy's Directorial Debut Looks Like a Crudup-Filled Cry Fest
William H. Macy’s directorial debut looks like it’s really straddling that line between manipulative, saccharine tearjerker and sincere, heart-hurting tearjerker. And as such, I probably shouldn’t be getting my hopes up just yet, but here we are.
Rudderless is the story of Billy Crudup, family man, whose son is killed in a school shooting. When Crudup finds some music his son has written, he decides to play it at an open mic (these are clearly his post-Stillwater days), where it catches the eye of Anton Yelchin, who becomes his bandmate/surrogate son figure. Felicity Huffman, Laurence Fishburne, and Selena Gomez’ pretty hair are there too.
Let it be known that I am fully ignoring the movie’s super-cheesy tagline, as I would really like to hold out hope that it’s going to be as good as I want it to be.
