Kate Beckinsale Forced to Wear Layers

Box-Office Potential Drops by 68 Percent / Dustin Rowles

I have to say: I don’t actually expect much from Whiteout, the Kate Beckinsale starrer based on Greg Rucka’s graphic novel series. It’s directed by Dominic Sena (Swordfish, Gone in 60 Seconds), who was grown in a petri dish from Michael Bay’s excised tail. But, I love the concept. I really do. There aren’t a lot of movies set exclusively in Antarctica (let’s try to forget that Eight Below ever took place), and this one seems to take full advantage of their surroundings. Plus: “The first murder in the history of Antarctica” is a pretty decent little hook.

I’m also not a man who complains when Kate Beckinsale is on the big screen, either. Her co-star, The Spirit’s Gabriel Macht is not, however, anyone I care one whit for. That said: This is probably an instance where the trailer is much better than the actual movie, but if it’s half as decent, it could be worth seeing. It hits theaters on September 11th.

Anybody familiar with the comic series?

While watching the trailer I found my mind wandering to when I was in elementary school I used to think it was funny to crack a joke about someones' blank white paper when they were trying to draw a picture. I would tell them what a nice polar bear in a blizzard.

I guess the trailer didn't really do much for me.

The trailer is preety cool...and we should add the narrator's voice to the diversion list. Creepysexy.

Bearing in mind this film has been on the shelf for over a year, I think its likely to be piss poor.

You're right Dustin. A latex clad Bekinsale would make this far more palatable. And don't give me that "it wouldn't make sense" shit. Bekinlatex always makes sense.

That picture looks like Elizabeth Hurley. And I second Alex the not so odd's opinion.

This is a Dark Castle movie, Dustin.
Just putting that out there.

I haven't watched the trailer yet and it doesn't say who Tom Skerritt is playing on the imdb cast list, but I'm 99.9% positive it will be a curmudgeonly authority figure of some kind.

I have read the comic(s) - after seeing a promo pic for the movie, some time ago. It's kind of like The Thing, minus the alien elements. The second comic also had some hot naked igloo sex, so we can live in hope.

I read the comics. There are 2 TPBs out there, both pretty cool (no pun intended). No Queen & Country but a nice read.

Did they shoot this in a winter climate somewhere or is all CGI and soundstages?

Youtube now says "This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc"

Why would they make them take it down? It is a promo for the movie that some other site is hosting for you free of charge?

Posted by: Brian at June 17, 2009 2:48 PM

Aww, see, I thought this was going to be about the Ken Follet novel. Damn...

Posted by: Nadha at June 17, 2009 3:05 PM

Warner continues to not understand what a promo is for, just as they failed to understand with music videos. Okay, Warner, listen: in the history of forever, music videos have been purchased by the teensiest, tiniest little number of people. They are, however, excellent loss-leaders; people will buy the actual albums if they see a video or two that they like.

This claim is even more scrotum-twistingly dumb. Someone is showing your advertisement for free, you fucking halfwits. Unlike the minute handful of weirdos who think YouTube is as good as an mp3 or CD when it comes to music, exactly zero people are thinking "you know, this trailer is just as good as the movie." This is free fucking advertising you're clamping down on! WTFIWWY?

Hell, maybe you have your reasons, but you really ought to enumerate them.
