Less than a week after the first images from Whip It debuted, there’s already a trailer for the Drew Barrymore directed, Ellen Page roller-derby movie. And to be honest, it doesn’t look very good: Like a female version of a Will Ferrell/Adam Sandler sports movie. It should have three or four solid laughs, but I suspect the rest of it will be frothy filler.

But you know what? I’m glad Ellen Page is doing it. I loved Juno (fuck you), but I’m not sure why, but I was starting to get this perception of Ellen Page as an actress that was a little too self-serious. Here, whether the movie is good or not, it looks like Page is having a great time; there are some self-deprecating Juno jabs even in the trailer, and it might be nice for Page to take the occasionally mediocre comedy (as long as it makes money). She’s got a hard indie reputation, and Barrymore is just the person to disabuse the world of that it, for better or worse.

Plus: Daniel Stern, y’all. Where the hell has he been?

My friend sent me this today saying 'This looks like your kind of film'. He's right, it does. I will watch it and I will love it, just like I love stuff like Stick It and Bring it On.

Another friend recently joined a roller derby and I would love to have a go, but I would be like Ellen Page here at the beginning of the film, except I would never get any better, and then I would have a nasty rollerskate accident and die. I'm assuming that's not how the film ends.

I'm going to love this film :)

Posted by: foaly at July 16, 2009 9:27 AM

This will do nothing to assuage my dislike of Drew Barrymore, as much as I like Ellen Page.

except I would never get any better, and then I would have a nasty rollerskate accident and die.

Carrie, if I've learned anything from movies, all you need is an inspiring training montage. Even Rocky had a montage.

Posted by: branded at July 16, 2009 9:27 AM

But what would my music be??

Posted by: Carrie at July 16, 2009 9:30 AM

That... made me smile. A lot.

Except for Marcia Gay Harden. What is she doing to her FACE!?

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at July 16, 2009 9:32 AM

"Celebrate mediocrity. That's fantastic."

Ok I'm there.

Posted by: twig at July 16, 2009 9:35 AM

Okay, I'll see it. Looks terribly awful, but I'm a sucker for a derby girl. Must be why I married one...

Mr. Yuck

p.s. Real roller derby is NOTHING like this.

Posted by: mr yuck at July 16, 2009 9:40 AM

will someone please tell AvB that i'm not talking to her?

MGH is lovely. LOVELY!

Posted by: gp at July 16, 2009 9:40 AM

Three words:

Coach: Andrew Wilson

"that's future man..."

Posted by: gunnertec at July 16, 2009 9:52 AM

will someone please tell AvB that i'm not talking to her?

To be fair, she's only terrifying when EP comes out with her hair blue at the... whatever that pageant-y thing is at the beginning. It's just that half the time whenever I see her lately, she looks like she's started Botoxing her face into oblivion. It makes me sad! In my pants!

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at July 16, 2009 10:01 AM

I feel like that doesn't look as bad as your intro made it out to be. It looks kinda fun.

Posted by: Lindsay at July 16, 2009 10:02 AM

Dudes, I've wanted a pair of roller skates for four years. Blades are okay but skates have a certain charm. This movie might just push me from wanting to 'going out and buying'

Oh and I'll be seeing this
(*and posting pictures of all the broken bones I'll recieve trying to form my very own mini roller derby in my back garden...who would like to join? Or name will be the Pajibettes, of course, and our uniform will be...what ever we damn well feel like with a Godtopus patch sewn on the back)

Posted by: Nadine at July 16, 2009 10:05 AM

Umm, Jimmy Fallon's name flashed across the screen during the credits.

The last time I recall Drew and Jimmy getting together, they tried to soul rape generations of Red Sox fans.

Fuck those ass suckers.

Posted by: Kballs at July 16, 2009 10:08 AM

Not sure why you guys are hating on this - it looks really cute. I know a lot of girls escaped from the express train to Teen Pregnancy who insist that roller derby saved their lives, so I'll definitely see this.

Posted by: lastpolarbear at July 16, 2009 10:10 AM

Yay Andrew Wilson! Seeing him makes me smile. He looks kinda like Luke and sounds kinda like Owen. Whee.

This has netflix, hangover Saturday written all over it. Man I wish the Bergen Roller Rink has had derbies when I was growing up. Carpeted walls are just not cool...

hmmph.

well, alright.

but next time, keep your opinions to yourself, this is the internet, we don't just spout off whatever crosses our mind.

Posted by: gp at July 16, 2009 10:23 AM

Looks awesomely silly.

Oh, and Alia Shawkat, y'all. No props for her? Come on now.

-k

p.s. @KBalls : Fallon was the scruffy Derby announcer dude, so, hopefully not a major player... I don't think you gotta worry about Fever Pitch 2.

Posted by: TheRealK at July 16, 2009 10:28 AM

YES PLEASE!

Posted by: missh at July 16, 2009 10:28 AM

Gah, you got me. I can see it now. This will be my new Bring It On, my new The Craft. I will watch it every Sunday on TNT or USA while I eat a scavenged breakfast around 3:00 p.m. I will reference it constantly and when I find it in the sale bin at Walgreens, it will be mine and I will wear it out. I can see it as clear as day. No lottery numbers, just this. Balls.

Posted by: jM at July 16, 2009 10:35 AM

jM, this ^^ is why we are twins.

Hee! What *was* I thinking?

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at July 16, 2009 10:53 AM

Drew Barrymore. No. I like Ellen Page but Barrymore can suck the life out of a movie like a Vietnamese hooker can suck a golf ball through a garden hose. Funny, they both cost about the same too.

"I like smart girls, that's why I married your mama. Well, that and because I knocked her up."

"Celebrate mediocrity".
'Nuff. Fucking. Said.

Posted by: Jim Doggie at July 16, 2009 11:12 AM

Admin, I feel the same way but I've found Drew, when playing roles like the one she is here, can be sort of fun to watch. So mebbe it wont suck all that

Posted by: Nadine at July 16, 2009 11:22 AM

Whatever, it looks cute and fun and Maeby is in it. I'm sold.

Alia Shawkat does not get enough love for being hilarious on AD. Plus she was awesome in that one episode of 'Veronica Mars' where she got her head shaved, and it showed she might actually have a little RANGE Michael Cera. You know, like maybe she wouldn't play the exact same character all the time Michael Cera. She might even have more than one way to deliver her lines Michael Cera.

Posted by: Mimi at July 16, 2009 11:29 AM

When Ellen Page appears on stage at the start with blue hair, there was supposed to be a record scratch sound effect. HAVE THESE PEOPLE NEVER CUT A TRAILER BEFORE?

Posted by: Simon A at July 16, 2009 11:32 AM

p.s. Real roller derby is NOTHING like this.

OK, watched some of the trailer and ...

Bliss? Seriously? This kid went all the way through school being called Blister, you just know it. No wonder she has a 'tude.

Posted by: , (the commenter formerly known as bucdaddy) at July 16, 2009 11:48 AM

I kinda liked it. Probably not enough to go to a theater for it, but enough to watch for it to hit cable.

Posted by: Drake at July 16, 2009 11:53 AM

It looks like light, forgettable fun. I'll catch it. Hell, not every movie I see has to be and EPIC(!!!) horror flick or and "important" film.

Posted by: David at July 16, 2009 11:54 AM

Blister? More like Blis TURD!

This looks bad.

But I bet the inevitable 4+ sweaty and upbeat montage sequences arouse my mimsy.

I will rent this.

Posted by: emotionalpedant at July 16, 2009 12:12 PM

Ill catch it on DVD.

Posted by: gilp at July 16, 2009 12:27 PM

It looks mediocre, but pretty cute. I generally like Barrymore when she's in this type of role, and I'm very fond of Alia Shawkat and Ellen Page.

Posted by: Zuzu at July 16, 2009 12:29 PM

This looks better than I expected, but doesn't Ellen Page qualify as a little person or something? I think IMDB lists her as being 4' 6" and 62 pounds. Girl would get messed UP in that ring.

Posted by: jimbob at July 16, 2009 12:39 PM

Blister? More like Blis TURD!

Posted by: Schoolyard Bully

Hee. That made me snort. Because I am 10.

Ooh I love Marcia Gay Harden. She needs to be in more movies.

Suck it, Rowles. This looks fun.

Posted by: figgy at July 16, 2009 12:42 PM

I'm too old for this kind of movie. Frankly, so is Drew.

Posted by: samantha t at July 16, 2009 12:51 PM

As someone who broke her elbow at her first Roller Derby practice, I think I'm going to have to watch this movie.

Posted by: Major Etiquette at July 16, 2009 12:57 PM

Well I am pretty annoyed that they show the girls punching each other, even turing around to hit someone! I spend all my time explaining to people once they hear me say "roller derbY' THat we DO NOT Punch the other team when skating, etc. it's illegal, etc because thats always the first thing someone asks about! I wish they had used WFTDA rules, not OSDA! There are only about 10 OSDA leagues even in existence, compared to hundreds of ones using WFTDA rules.

Thousands of people are gonna see this trailer in the theater that would never go see the whole movie, and still think it's just a big cat fight on wheels.

But, I guess we just need to get them to bouts!! Hopefully the rest of the movie is real enough.. Are those girls even wearing mouth guards? I need to look again... other than that, I look forward to seeing it. At least they show them training, that it's not just "show up and skate"

Posted by: Jax at July 16, 2009 2:03 PM

There's no fighting but they call them "bouts"?

Esplain.

Posted by: , (the commenter formerly known as bucdaddy) at July 16, 2009 4:13 PM

Just something left over from when there WAS staged fighting in derby. Kind of like the outfits and names. I've seen a few catfights at bouts recently, but they're rare. At the least, you'd take a major penalty, and if you flat-out punched a girl in the face, you'd enjoy being ejected from the bout. I'm glad they appear to have hired some actual derby girls and I love Andrew Wilson, Kristen Wiig and Zoe Bell.

Posted by: Hotcha at July 16, 2009 4:29 PM

OH, Ellen page looks so pretty! Juliette Lewis! I teared up watching the trailer. Yeah, my husband is gunna LOVE being tricked into seeing this one with me. I can feel him staring death rays into the side of my head (mid-film?) allready.
By the way, there is no female version of an Adam Sandler movie. NOT EVEN SPANGLISH!

Posted by: Alexis at July 16, 2009 5:21 PM

WFTDA? OSDA? I am inordinately happy that the world is big enough for two ruling bodies of Roller Derby.

Posted by: Mrcreosote at July 16, 2009 10:20 PM

I love Juliette Lewis.

It's okay, I'll love her enough for everyone else, too.

I'll see this, and like it. I'll like it A LOT.

Posted by: replica at July 17, 2009 12:32 AM

I take back every mean thing I said about this movie earlier. Except for the part about how it's lame that it doesn't have anybody from "Dynasty", because seriously, how fantastic would that be? But anyway, this looks stupidly adorable. I probably won't see it in a theatre unless there's one of those sad sack "Stimulus Matinee" shows that only costs four dollars, but based on this trailer I can tell that I absolutely must own this on DVD. Then I can watch it in marathons with the other ridiculously awful/awesome shit I own on DVD.

Posted by: Sarina at July 17, 2009 1:08 AM

It looks like a fun date movie to me!

Posted by: Denny B at July 17, 2009 6:57 AM

Tee hee! replica, I love Juliette Lewis also. She crazy!

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at July 17, 2009 7:38 AM

WFTDA rules forever. I'm on the staff of the Mad Rollin Dolls (4th Flat Track League started since the revival) and one of my housemates is a ex-Skater turned Ref. This is a travesty of derby, but the hell if I'm not going to go see it!
