Where the Wild Things Are Trailer / Dustin Rowles

The Where the Wild Things Are trailer is here, and holyohmygod is it awesome. It makes me all fluttery and fuzzy. It’s seventeen kinds of heart-swelly. I just hope the movie is half as good as the trailer.

Written by Dave Eggers and directed by Spike Jonze, Where the Wild Things Are is an adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s classic children’s story, where Max, a disobedient little boy sent to bed without his supper, creates his own world—a forest inhabited by ferocious wild creatures that crown Max as their ruler. Voice talent includes Forest Whitaker, Paul Dano, James Gandolfini, Catherine O’Hara, and Lauren Ambrose. Max Records plays Max, and Catherine Keener plays his mother.

Video-B-Gone.

It's down. FUCK. This is what happens when I step away from the computer for TEN MINUTES.

Posted by: figgy at March 25, 2009 3:06 PM

I managed to catch it before it went down.

Dustin does not exaggerate. It was fucking amazing.

Aha!

And oh. Oh, man.

Holy godtopus on a stick. It looks glorious. Amazing. I can't wait. I can't.

Posted by: figgy at March 25, 2009 3:09 PM

It's still up here.

Posted by: TK at March 25, 2009 3:09 PM

God DAMN IT. Missed it. Me and my work friends were so excited too.

Posted by: Julie at March 25, 2009 3:09 PM

Someone please tell me what that song is, it made me want to cry.

Posted by: figgy at March 25, 2009 3:10 PM

LOVED IT. LOOOOOVED IT. Figs, it's from Arcade Fire's album Funeral, a slightly different version of their song "Wake Up".

Perfect choice too.

Posted by: Julie at March 25, 2009 3:14 PM

Well fuck me with a porcupine. I'm going to have another totally messed up Oscar ballot this year if the film is even half as good as that trailer. I though I peaked with The Strangers and Wendy and Lucy making my line-up, but now I'm possibly going to have Coraline AND Where the Wild Things Are in my top 5 of 2009?

And I still have the audacity to wonder why people don't take my film opinions seriously.

THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID

I just can't do it. I need help. That's what she said.

I might have to watch it 20 more times. I can't get over how perfect the Arcade Fire song was for the trailer...I teared up a little.

Posted by: Julie at March 25, 2009 3:19 PM

Me too Julie. I'm sitting here all teary and trying to explain to my co-workers why I'm getting emotional over a movie trailer.

Posted by: krix at March 25, 2009 3:21 PM

Me too, Jules. And I smiled through the entire thing.

Posted by: Kolby at March 25, 2009 3:21 PM

You may have to sit through a short commercial, but we're back in business. I'll change that trailer out for a YouTube one when it's available again.

Posted by: Dustin Rowles at March 25, 2009 3:22 PM

Ahhhh....I was able to watch it. Gave me chills.

Why have a commercial for a product you are trying to sell to people TAKEN DOWN?!?

And branded: HA!!

Posted by: Dangle McGee at March 25, 2009 3:22 PM

Loved it, loved it! I really hope the decision not to CGI the hell out of this pays off the way the trailer does.

Posted by: branded at March 25, 2009 3:22 PM

I haven't been this warm and fuzzy since I wore footy jammies when I was five.

Posted by: admin at March 25, 2009 3:25 PM

Oh it does look lovely! Still holding onto my bubble of hope for this film.

Posted by: tamatha at March 25, 2009 3:26 PM

Now I'm sad all over again about Jim Henson...the monsters reminded me a little bit of Fraggle Rock's Gorgs. Which to me, isn't a bad thing.

Posted by: Julie at March 25, 2009 3:26 PM

so happy i came home for a quick lunch!

when the howling began at the end, i realized i was getting a half-chub (non-sexual, just blood-pumpingly good).

Posted by: gp at March 25, 2009 3:27 PM

Thanks, Jules! I'm gonna go get it immediately.

Posted by: figgy at March 25, 2009 3:32 PM

Thanks figgy! And thank you to everyone else who admits to tearing up. I thought sure it was me and my forkin' hormones.

Posted by: Cindy at March 25, 2009 3:33 PM

Normally I'm not a fan of promotional film merchandise, but if they start selling versions of Max's pajamas, I will absolutely buy some for my one year old daughter.

Posted by: branded at March 25, 2009 3:35 PM

Just read this book to my nieces and nephew. Now I get to show them this trailer.

Yup, I'm the favorite auntie...

Posted by: Trouble at March 25, 2009 3:39 PM

Wow...just...wow.

Posted by: Smokin at March 25, 2009 3:42 PM

Oh. My. Fucking. God.

How easy would it have been to screw up this movie, and yet it looks as beautiful and wonderful as the book was. Spike Jonze, you are the fucking MAN.

I seriously got the chills like 3x watching that.

Posted by: Haggis at March 25, 2009 3:45 PM

This made my heart happy.

Posted by: Kayanne at March 25, 2009 3:48 PM

This was really well done.

I can't wait for the video game adaptation!

(I kid ... I kid)

Posted by: Steven Lloyd Wilson at March 25, 2009 3:57 PM

Holy shit I'm smiling. At a movie trailer.

Far as I'm concerned, they don't need to release any other movies this year. I'll watch this over & over again...

Posted by: Skitz at March 25, 2009 4:03 PM

*Squuueeeee*

Posted by: the_wakeful at March 25, 2009 4:07 PM

Holy shit I'm smiling. At a movie trailer.

I thought I heard a chorus of angels.

Posted by: admin at March 25, 2009 4:18 PM

OMG!!! Hol fucking shit! OMFG! Lolz! OMG! Fucking bloody hell. I need to sleep until October because the days will just be too long.

(I just drove 12 miles because Julie text msg'd me that the trailer was up. And YES! It was worth it.)

Posted by: PissBoy at March 25, 2009 4:25 PM

*I* want those pajamas.

Haaaaa! That's awesome.

Posted by: figgy at March 25, 2009 4:51 PM

"Please don't go, we'll eat you up, we love you so."

This movie looks spellbinding, the polar opposite of How the Grinch Stole Christmas. live action with Jim Carey. I haven't been this happy about watching a movie since I saw Return of the King back in 2003. I smell best picture again.

Posted by: George at March 25, 2009 4:54 PM

Anyone know what that 'Wake Up' version was? Thanks in advance.

Posted by: FourKings at March 25, 2009 4:57 PM

Reason #2312 why I love this place:

I had never listened to Arcade Fire. Just never came across it. Now? I just spent about an hour on youtube listening to their songs, and holy crap, I didn't know what I was missing. Amazing.

Posted by: figgy at March 25, 2009 5:12 PM

Just . . . joyous. I'm so happy now.

*slow clap*

Posted by: Lauren at March 25, 2009 5:35 PM

This just looks magical, and the Arcade Fire choice couldn't have been better. So promising...

Posted by: HotMustard at March 25, 2009 6:31 PM

forget the one year old daughters, *I* want those pj's!!!

Posted by: Stella at March 25, 2009 6:40 PM

So...painfully...far...away...

Posted by: Sapphiar at March 25, 2009 8:08 PM

CAN'T. STOP. WATCHING.

A phenomenal trailer! Can't wait.

Posted by: Mick J at March 25, 2009 8:19 PM

Seeing that one wild thing with tears in it's eyes for that little moment...

*sniffle*

This is going to be beautiful.

Posted by: Riley at March 25, 2009 8:38 PM

I do believe I've found my next trippy, stoned film adventure. (The previous being Coraline in 3D and holysweetbabyjesus was that awesome). This looks really fantastic.

Posted by: Bill at March 25, 2009 9:12 PM

It's like Labrynth, but without David Bowie's scary-big dick.

Posted by: Kitty X at March 25, 2009 9:48 PM

Didn't they already do an H.R.Puffinstuff movie?

Seriously though, after reading this book when I was younger I called myself Max for like three years.

Sure, that made those last three years of high school tough, what with having to explain it all the time and then the subsequent beatings...

I'm not sure how it will translate into a feature length film, but I'm tingling with joyous anticipation.

Posted by: Bane at March 25, 2009 9:55 PM

yes!

Posted by: farik at March 25, 2009 10:10 PM

but without David Bowie's scary-big dick.

I thought some people regard that as one of the movie's assets!

Posted by: Jay at March 25, 2009 10:21 PM

thanks figgy, you're now officially forgiven your trespasses.

have no idea about the movie, but that was a awesome fucking trailer.

marked it down.

Posted by: Soylent Green is Sheeple at March 25, 2009 10:36 PM

Here are some different versions of "Wake Up" by Arcade Fire, including several live versions (not sure if the one is the one in the trailer).

http://www.theworldforgot.com/2009/03/24/arcade-fire-wake-up/

I can attest that they are awesome.

Posted by: Mick J at March 25, 2009 11:19 PM

I had never heard of the book before the news of the movie version came out, but seeing the trailer I feel quite interested; sadly I like to take a careful approach regarding movies so I won't get really excited already. Meanwhile, I need to look for the book (also, loved the song choice for the trailer; it's my favorite Arcade Fire song)

Posted by: Radlum at March 25, 2009 11:36 PM

I'm pretty sure that the beginning acoustic version is from Morning Becomes Eclectic on KCRW. I've got it on my ipod and it sounds identical.

Then it transitions into the regular album version.

Posted by: EtcEtcEtc at March 26, 2009 2:06 AM

i need to look for the book

oh Radlum you sure do. it's one of the books that i get simultaneously choked up and chills down my back when i read it to my daughter.

Posted by: mswas at March 26, 2009 5:32 AM

With all the love and giddyness everyone's pouring out here, I need to watch this trailer! (Damn work regulations!) Though, I'd just like to comment I love when a trailer does that to you. You know, it just makes you smile and it really brings out a human reaction besides, "Oh, I want to see that." Something that really grabs hold of you and does amazing things to your soul, and actually makes you believe that entertainment can actually enrich you instead of just entertain.

If this trailer lives up to the hype you're all broadcasting, I'll be a kid again.

If this film lives up to the hype the trailer will surely generate on a grand scale, then I will have hope in Hollywood again.

It's about time a kid's movie did something more than push merchandise.

I, for the most part, had my head buried in dinosaur books, and books about natural science and wildlife as a child. I had some children's books that were favorites, of course (a big, four-volume Disney anthology comes to mind), but this one never made it into my library. I've never read it.

I'm missing the sense of elation that everyone else is feeling, here. I feel cheated, albeit by my own hand. Boooo @ me.

Posted by: Rykker at March 26, 2009 10:39 AM

I am excited for this movie. I bet the ratings will go through the roof, especially with those that have grown up with the book.

Posted by: Erin at March 26, 2009 2:33 PM

Funny how you don't realise how deeply some of the books you loved as kids affected you until you find yourself at 30 weeping over a movie trailer. Can't wait for this.
