"That's Where I'm a Viking!"

Valhalla_Rising.jpg

Valhalla Rising is a Danish Film that got some play in the European film festivals in the fall of last year and is looking at a wider release later this year. It’s in English, which is convenient for the majority of us lurking around these parts, but only serves to reinforce notions that the rest of the world should speak English. Mads Mikkelsen (now that’s a name), plays a mute one-eyed warrior with supernatural strength, who after escaping from the Scots holding him captive and making him fight for his life, accompanies a group of Christians on a crusade to the Holy Land. They get lost in symbolic supernatural fog and wacky ultraviolent hijinks ensue. Here’s the trailer:

There’s also an extended clip available that’s basically a series of cuts from the particularly brutal fight scenes in the film. There are decapitations, heads mounted on stakes, axes making pointed entreaties to skulls, spattering blood, a bit of brains for good measure, and a slowly executed disembowelment. So it gets swimming pool treatment: don’t go in if you’ve eaten in the last hour.

The sad bit about showing off the ultraviolence like so is that advance reviews that liked the film have talked more about the surreal mystery of the film, the violence adding extra layers to something delving into the potential madness of its characters.

Comments

In reference to your last paragraph: That may be true but, much like boobies, violence puts asses in seats. Hopefully those reviews are correct and there is more to the film than just brutality. Mind you, I'm always up for some graphic battles, if they're used properly.

It's too bad this isn't in Danish. I don't know why people hate sub-titles so much. Look what happened to Let The Right One In. That's a little bit different because the subtitles got botched, but a film like this should really be in its "original" language.

Posted by: chalupa at February 24, 2010 9:40 AM

Is this the long-gestating Techno Viking movie?

Posted by: the new transported man at February 24, 2010 10:12 AM

you're so right, admin. except that we tend to be more accepting of violence. what was it that Jack Nicholson once said?

Kiss a tit, and it's rated X. Hack it of with a sword and it gets a PG.

but i do love the use of The Nutcracker Suite in the second clip. i now have visions of sexy, naked snow fairies dancing in my head. except that the fairies are also covered in blood and are trying to hack each other to bits with broadswords.

Posted by: causaubon at February 24, 2010 10:29 AM

oops. Jack said "Hack it off", not of.

it's those damn fairies. they're messin' with my head.

Posted by: causaubon at February 24, 2010 10:31 AM

They totally used a riff from the Terminator movies. How badass is that?

All you really had to say was Viking and Brutal and I knew I was going to see it.

Posted by: DeistBrawler at February 24, 2010 10:37 AM

Yes, yes, but does the mute guy speak English?

In a related note:
I had a job once where the president's secretary kept saying, "Oh, but the point is mute." She wouldn't believe me that the word was "moot" until I waved a dictionary in front of her face.

Posted by: BWeaves at February 24, 2010 11:40 AM

So did she mute her mute-argument @BWeaves?

Posted by: chalupa at February 24, 2010 11:43 AM

What is it with Mads and his left eye being mcFucked? He was totally amazing in Casino Royale, and crying blood was a nice touch, but seriously man. If he does another movie with a wonky eye I think it could officially be classified as a fetish

Posted by: American Girl in London at February 24, 2010 12:04 PM

Mads Mikkelsen (now that’s a name), plays a mute one-eyed warrior with supernatural strength

And all they could muster for a character named was the appropriate but dull "One-Eye".

She wouldn't believe me that the word was "moot" until I waved a dictionary in front of her face.

"The argument is 'moo'. It's like a cow's opinion. It doesn't matter. It's moo."

In related news, I've watched entirely too much syndicated television.

Posted by: branded at February 24, 2010 12:17 PM

That's almost as bad as calling it a Moo Point (it's a cow's opinion so it doesn't matter!).

Also the headline made me giggle. I love you, Ralph Wiggum.

Posted by: figgy at February 24, 2010 12:18 PM

Actually, she refused to believe she was wrong.

Posted by: BWeaves at February 24, 2010 12:22 PM

@BWeaves - Then you should tell her, "That's just like uh, your opinion, man."

Posted by: chalupa at February 24, 2010 12:32 PM

Gotcha figgy! America wins again!

Posted by: branded at February 24, 2010 12:39 PM

The second clip reminds me of A Clockwork Orange.

The juxtaposition of "Singing in the Rain" with the horrible acts the Droogs were committing.

Anyone else agree?

Posted by: Dave at February 24, 2010 12:39 PM

I. am. on. board. vikings, ahoy!

Posted by: grenadine at February 24, 2010 1:54 PM

Horrorshow. Real horrorshow.

Also, what's with the Terminator music? Because a terminator/viking movie seriously has to be made. Directed by someone with a name less douchey than "McG."

Posted by: Royalewithcheese at February 24, 2010 3:53 PM

The title of this post made me snort with laughter. Man, do I loves me some Ralph Wiggum.

Off to join Ralph in a Norse dreamland.

Posted by: Jelinas at February 24, 2010 4:06 PM

Does anyone else find Mads Mikkelson kind of sexy? 'After the Wedding'? Anybody?

...

Posted by: Mimi at February 24, 2010 5:31 PM

Mads is a sex symbol in Denmark, Mimi. My Danish friend loaned me some Mads Mikkelson movies a few years ago, he's very good. I particularly liked his Dogme film called Open Hearts (Danish: Elsker dig for evigt), (2002). The Wikipedia entry says Zach Braff is going to do a remake of it, which will undoubtedly suck in comparison.

If you aren't familiar with Dogme films, check out the link, it explains it better than I can.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dogme_95

Basically, they are low budget movies that rely on strong story lines instead of special effects and big names. I'm sure plenty of you Pajiban regulars are already familiar with it though.

Posted by: Viking at February 24, 2010 7:25 PM

I'm surprised more people don't remember Mads Mikkelsen. Maybe after "Clash of the Titans" comes out? I relate him to a young Stellan Starsgard type as far a someone you see all the time, but never remember.

Posted by: Jenilane at February 24, 2010 11:59 PM

He was also in King Arthur. He played the mute guy carrying the falcon around.

Posted by: Viking at February 25, 2010 6:57 AM

Hey! That's Tonny from the Pusher series. Awesome. Talented director.

Posted by: Samanthrax at February 25, 2010 8:03 AM

Mads is very good, going to see this for sure

Posted by: Silchas Ruin at February 25, 2010 1:47 PM

Had a chance to see this film during the London Film Festival. Wish I had passed.

Horrible, meandering, pseudo-philosophical bullshit. The comments by the director after the film make Uwe Boll's latest dvd commentary look like a PhD dissertation.

I just wanna share my experience here. I found my boyfriend several months ago, who is 10 years older than me, at http://EUAgeless.com/, a free place for age-gap relationship. It's fabulous! Maybe you wanna check it!

Posted by: Jim at February 26, 2010 1:53 AM

Loved the 1st part of the movie - the gritty (gruesome) action - felt kinda like Jet Li's 'Unleashed' where Jet is sorta like a dog on a chain and is 'bred' only for fighting. What I don't get is why does 1-eye let himself be killed by the native americans in the end when he could have easily taken all of em? Did he forsee his death - as is suggested in the film? Can some1 pls explain why he sacrificed himself? PS. mads was pretty good in Clash of the Titans.

Posted by: MuvyFreek at May 18, 2010 9:54 PM

Thanks for the spoiler.

Seriously, what the fuck were you thinking? This film hasn't seen a wide release, yet, so there are very few who have seen it at this point, and you give the ending away?

The "dope" part of your web address is quite fitting...

Posted by: Rykker at May 27, 2010 6:26 PM

Is it wrong to reinvest a film just so you can update its particular effects? Hollywood doesn't seem to think so. The classic claymation and stop motion results of old are some of the initial things we think about when bringing up the subject of mythology movies. But one still cannot help but think how totally awesome it would look if it were updated.

spoiler just in case u didn't see the first one.... SPOILER!!!!!

I would like to think he died for the boy.

Repeat
Spoiler just in case u didn't see the first one.... SPOILER!!!!

I think what made him so powerful in the beginning is he didn't fear death because he knew when he was going to die. he foresaw it.

Just saw this film, twice. The violance is gory, but for a 93 minute film, I doubt there is more than 7 or 8 minutes of violence in the entire film. Really that's it.

The movie does draaaaagggggg in places, particularly on the boat voyage, which seems to last nearly as long as the transatlantic journey it represents.

One-Eye is the PERFECT name for the hero, as the Norse chief god Odin has plucked out his own eye in exchange for wisdom. But likely, only a Dane, a student of mythology, or a marvel comics fanboy would know that.

It helps knowing a bit about norse mythology and how the norse viewed their world and what their conception of hell was. The Viking hell -Helheim located in the "cold and misty" realm of Niflheim, so the landscape in the "new world" certainly does evok that.

The relationship between the boy and One-Eye is wonderful and gives the movie an emotional anchor, particulary at the very end of the movie when SPOILER--- One-eye holds the boys arm for just a second-- One-eye's version of a hug -- before meeting his death.

In all, I think this is a failed movie in some respects, the pacing is too slow, there is an insufficent amount of violence, the storyline between Obe-Eye and his Scots captors was never resolved (Barde the Scot chiefain, warns us that one-eye will come back to settle the score, but then One-eye takes off for the Holy Land, did the writers just forget about it)?

I think this movie will gain a cult following and grow in stature over the years, but still, there are problems with the narrative that will prevent the movie from ever being regarded as a true classic. For serious film students, and norse ehthusiasts, I would suggest this is a film worth checking out, but be prepared, it is the longest 93 minutes you will likely ever spend watching a film.

a good media developer has to focus on many acpects, good design starts with well chosen colors, the optimized construction of logo design and selected fonts. So it's an advantage to have a developer, with the necessary sensivity and also technical know-how. Thanks for this interesting article. best regards

You should compare this movie with Dead Man, for landscape scenery, slowness and ultimate ending.

I found great love and good support over the years, and now reading this article will again supports me on a different way.

I recently stumbled across the coolest looking Simpsons porno parody of all time. It's fully live action and Marge is wildly hot, but i seriously practically crapped my pants once i saw Flanders. Its like they yanked him straight out of the show and made him real...

Okay but you need to also take into account what made them do that in the first place
