The Coen Brothers Head West And Damn, Does It Looks Badass

Well shit, I’m sold.

I’m not a big John Wayne guy, which is a little odd considering that I’m a huge fan of Westerns. But there are two Wayne flicks that I’ve always loved — The Searchers, and True Grit. And while I’m typically not a fan of the remake machine, when I heard that the Coen brothers were doing their own adaptation of Charles Portis’s novel, True Grit, with Jeff Bridges as the great Rooster Cogburn, well, I got a little excited.

And here’s the first footage in the form of a teaser trailer, and now I’m a lot excited. It nails the look and feel, but it’s also distinctly Coen brothers all the way. Hailee Steinfeld, in her first role, looks and sounds perfect as young Mattie Ross. Matt Damon is almost unrecognizable in the brief flash that you see him, but he’s Matt Damon — he’ll kill in the role of Texas Ranger LeBouef. The cinematography looks predictably spectacular. The music is lush and gorgeous. Take a gander:

So, so, so in. And, if this works, they ought to remake Rooster Cogburn next. Jeff Bridges being able to play the more... light-hearted side of the character would be spectacular.

I love a good revenge story.

Well, it involves the Coen brothers, so it's hard not to be excited right there. Plus Matt Damon & Jeff Bridges, and how can you say no?

Posted by: tamatha at September 28, 2010 10:41 AM

Bad ass indeed.

That header pic has more shades of taupe than Michael Kors' spray tan and I for one say Bravo!

Great. Now I have a massive erection.

You gotta love a trailer that ends

RETRIBUTION

THIS CHRISTMAS

In the Julien household, Thanksgiving is traditionally the Retribution holiday and Christmas is for Recriminations, but I trust the Coen brothers know what they are doing.

I. Can't. Watch. The. Trailer. Here. :(

But, damn, that picture is slick. I've been fired up about this ever since I first heard about it. Even more so once I heard Bridges was cast as Cogburn.

Stupid Coen Brothers, making me like Westerns. *kicks dirt*

Posted by: Sarz at September 28, 2010 10:59 AM

pete,

Yes, I need to return these to the Pants Store.

Having grown up in Southern Arizona, I love a good western. I watched just about every western worth seeing (and some that weren't) with my Dad as a child. I am delighted that Hollywood is making some good westerns again. Please Hollywood continue.

I must protest this movie on general principles. True Grit is a great movie. Great movies do not need to be re-made.

You'll all burn in everlasting re-make, sequel, re-boot, re-borquel hell for this.

"McClintock!"

"Ho, Macklin, BIG party, where the whiskey?"

I loved "No Country for Old Men" (and just about everything else the Coen brothers have done) and man o' man...based on what I saw of the trailer, this movie is worth the 8 hour, three hellish mountain passes, winter-time, one way trip to Vancouver's big screen and sound.

Heh, what if I didnt' make it? Imagine the headline: "middle-aged woman dies while skidding her car off a snowy-covered cliff while en route to see the Coen brother's movie, "True Grit".

God, I hope heaven plays new releases.

Heaven, phhhhtttt....who am I kidding?

Please tell me they're keeping in the line, "Fill your hand, you son of a BITCH!" Because I think Bridges would sell the hell out of it. :)

Posted by: luthien26 at September 28, 2010 1:32 PM

At least you aren't denying its a remake of the John Wayne film. I keep seeing people argue that its not a remake, that its just another movie based on the same book.

You fucking idiots. You can see some almost shot for shot frames in this TRAILER from the John Wayne True Grit.

However, no one is really doing that here. So again, I salute you Pajibans.

B-b-but it's the Coen Brothers!! They can't make a bad movie, much less a remake...what's that? Th Ladykillers? Never heard of it. Never want to hear of it. Go away. covers ears...then decides to rip them off:)

Well, I read they never wanted to make that movie anyway. Still, I have been blown away by a majority of the things Joel and Ethan have done, so I am well and truly psyched for this too, s it looks awesome. But I tend to see the originals of remade movies that I see anyway, just to compare. I don't like John Wayne much, but I do hear tons of great things about the movie, so why not.

Posted by: vic at September 28, 2010 3:50 PM

Hell yes. I love westerns.

Posted by: grace b at September 28, 2010 7:18 PM

The faithfulness of this trailer gives me hope that we'll be hearing some "Bold talk for a one-eyed fat man!" immediately followed by "FILL YOUR HAND, YOU SON OF A BITCH!" Reins. Teeth. Galloping, shooting badassery.

Dude. Bourne. Brolin. Not Dakota Fanning. BARRY FUCKING PEPPER AS 'LUCKY NED' PEPPER!!!!!

OMFG. Cannot wait. Cannot wait.

Look, they're going to keep remaking them anyway, so I'm going to embrace the good ones.

"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for I am the meanest son of a bitch of them all."

Yeah, no doubt.

Hopefully Barry Pepper can make a better name fer hisself. Battlefield Earth killed him.

Posted by: Protoguy at September 29, 2010 5:13 AM

Loved Barry Pepper since Saving Private Ryan. I was already totally down for watching this movie but then I spotted Barry's name at the end of the trailer. Extra treat.

Battlefield Earth...I actually watched that movie for the first time a few months ago...just to see Kim Coates, gotta support my Sons of Anarchy addiction. Damnit that movie was BAD. I totally understand that sometimes actors just need a paycheck, but damnit bro.

Posted by: beautifulgirl at September 29, 2010 8:05 PM

See that, that right there? That's what you call cinematography.

And it's about time for the fucking re-make. The original was a great movie, exact for the unfortunate presence of John Wayne.
