With a Name Like Fillion, It's Gotta Be Good

Keep Truckin, Like the Do-Dah Man / Dustin Rowles

There’s a movie coming out in very limited release this weekend which, despite its cast, has gotten absolutely no press. It’s an indie film, from director James Mottern, and it’s quite possible that it doesn’t even deserve press. But the trailer looks fantastic, if you’re into movies with great performances. It’s about a female truck driver, played by the ohmygod she’s gorgeous Michelle Monaghan (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Gone Baby Gone), who takes in her estranged 11-year-old son.

The reason I’m surprised I haven’t run across it yet is that Nathan Fillion also has a role in the film (though it’s probably small), as do Benjamin Bratt and Joey Lauren Adams (hey! What happened to her?). It’s gotten decent reviews, with particular focus on Michelle Monaghan’s performance (and one critic even pointed out its similarities to Melissa Leo’s performance in Frozen River, which was my first thought when I saw the trailer).

It premieres this weekend in a handful of theaters in NYC, San Diego, and Pittsburgh, and even one theater in Kentucky and New Mexico (presumably geared toward their truck driver population?) Here’s a complete list. We probably won’t manage to get to it until its DVD release, but it looks promising. Plus, you know, there’s the Fillion.

Yeah, but what's it called?

*sigh* This picture made my day. Also, this movie looks like it has the potential to be lovely. Or awful. But probably lovely.

New Mexico? Cool. George can't bitch about living in a cultural wasteland anymore.

Yes he can, as it's probably playing here in Albuquerque, and I believe he's down south somewhere.

and I spoke too soon, it's playing in Gallup.

It’s about a female truck driver, played by the ohmygod she’s gorgeous Michelle Monaghan...

One: How many female truck drivers have you seen?
Two: How many attractive truck drivers have you seen?
Three: How many attractive female truck drivers have you seen?

Yeah, see, I call bullshit. She's way too tiny and way too hot to be a truck driver.

There's a bit of a cornball factor here.

So if I want to see this movie, I have to travel to Portland, Maine? Why would I ever want to do such a thing?

A week ago, on the way to see It might Get Loud at the Circle, I saw a trucker deftly maneuver through a very tight intersection and when I looked in the cab to see the magnificent, coors-light swilling, redneck bastard that had pulled it off, I beheld instead an attractive female trucker. Whether she had Mal in her sleeper cab bunk, I wouldn't care to speculate.

Hey! Is this a remake of Over the Top? Awesome.

I have to say, unlikeliness aside, it does look pretty good, and I usually hate heartwarming shit like this.

*sigh*

How can it be that after so many years, I still miss Mal and the crew and want to see more of them (but exspecially Mal)?

Well, I'll take Fillion pretty much any way I can get him.

Jerce, you're not alone. Not alone at all.

And all the unlikeliness aside, one might as well go see that movie - looks like two hours well spent.

Wait a minute. What? Are you telling me that a limited release film is actually opening in fucking GALLUP? Happy Birthday to me!

Now, if they would only get Paranormal Activity up here, I could die happy.

I think I want to see it just because Matthew Lawrence has an actual credit in it. Man, I loved Boy Meets World.
