TRON Legacy Teaser Trailer

Walt Disney screened this trailer last year at Comic-Con, which was footage originally shot by the director of TRON Legacy, Joseph Kosinski, to get the project greenlit. There’d be a bootleg version of the trailer all over the Internet, but it was of horrible quality. This is in HD, and gives you a fairly good idea of what TRON Legacy will look like, although I hope it’s more interesting than watching a couple of glow-in-the-dark motorcycles speed around a virtual world for two hours. If you hang in there for the trailer, though, you get some pretty neat footage of Jeff Bridges, who returns as Kevin Flynn.

In the sequel, Kevin Flynn’s son, Sam (Garret Hedlun), investigates the disappearance of his father and ends up getting sucked in to the same virtual world that his father has been living in for 25 years.

Here’s the trailer:

Don't know what to make of this, partly because I never played Tron... I'm just mildly aware of the game's premise.

Trailer (if that's what you wanna call this) is certainly visually appealing. Don't understand the point of showing Jeff Bridges for 5 seconds unless they just want you to know that "the Dude abides."

I'll probably see this... although I doubt it will do much for me (except for the Daft Punk potential soundtrack, that is).

Looks craptacular. I'm sure all the folks attracted to shiny things will go see it.

Seriously, does anyone even remember the original? I remember thinking it was so cool when I was a kid...until I watched it. Snoozeville!

I loved the original Tron. It looks like they have made a sequel that is worthy of its predessor. I am excited for this movie.

thank you, armando. i second that the first tron was BORING. (i did like the video game though, the spiders always killed my 10yo ass.)

this shinyness intrigues me though.
but why are the cycles only going 20 mph? i could out-walk them. i want shit flying by me so fast, the blurriness makes me squee. (if some attention to detail is needed, i trust them to slo-mo it down for me.)

I'm torn. I liked Tron and I think that it's one of the movies that could actually benefit from a remake. But this is Disney we're talking about here. If they make it into Tron 2: In My Pants, I'm going to get cutty.

I saw the original Tron several times, because I was a new computer programmer at the time, and it was the geeky thing to do. However, I seem to remember that:

1) Jeff Bridges got out of the computer.
2) The computer probably became obsolete when the next model came out the next year, and the "virtual reality" would have disappeared right after pulling the plug.
3) There's nothing more boring that watching someone else play a video game for 2 hours. Snore.

Shiny.

I'll wait for actual product before shitting on it.

@BWeaves
I didn't see the original, and not knowing Jeff Bridges was in it clouded my judgement on his appearance in the trailer. Should've done my IMDb research prior to commenting!

My biggest concern starts with this... TRON, when it was new, was really the first exposure most folks had with the -- i think -- compelling fiction that computers and networks have a kind of inner life that maps to our own, albeit in a kind of bizzarro fashion.

The movie itself is not especially great, but I think a lot of us hold a candle for it because it stirred our imaginations so much. Like a lot of successful fiction, it suggested that we live in a most fantastical world, and that just behind the veil there's all kinds of fabulous and unbelievable things going on.

So, in 2009, with all that's happened in the intervening years -- The Matrix et seq in particular -- the premise of living inside a computer won't be fresh, and I worry that it won't be replaced by anything half as compelling.

I expect shiny CG sets, maybe even a bit of good action, but I worry about it being resoundingly hollow.

I really miss the right-angle turns. It made them seem super fast and super difficult to maneuver. Yeah, these are just not cool enough.

My boyfriend is a frisbee player, and LOVES Tron because (and I quote): "they kill each other with frisbees." I guarantee I will being going to this movie opening weekend, probably with a glow-in-the-dark frisbee in tow. Hell, if the theater let us, it'd probably have razors taped to the edges.

Look, y'all: Tron was terrible. It was absolutely terrible. Live-action Disney from the 80s? I am frankly embarrassed for you people that I have to spell this out for you.

Be honest with yourselves. Remember the look of the thing? Remember the acting? Remember the plot? The script?

The original Tron was a neon train wreck. Let it go.

Posted by: Jerce at July 27, 2009 11:23 AM

The original was the first "CGI" movie I can remember. The movie itself turned out to be almost painfully boring, but I think a lot of people realized it was the "Steamboat Willie" of our generation.

Posted by: ed newman at July 27, 2009 11:31 AM

Ahhhhhh I must be getting old, because I have a soft spot for the original Tron.Much like TheRealK points out,it was all new back then, the idea of the digital world. Despite the stodgy plot, it was a visually thrilling concept and I have to say this trailer promises even better.

Wasn't this called TR2N, or 2RON, or TR0N, or something else that made me hate math, english, and people at the same time?

Posted by: jM at July 27, 2009 12:21 PM

So...it's Speed Racer on bikes?

Posted by: figgy at July 27, 2009 12:41 PM

I didn't really give a damn until I heard about Daft Punk doing the soundtrack. What can I say? I really love those crazy French Robots.

Yes, yes, yes, yes. That's why it was badass. My dad was a huge science fiction fan so I saw pretty much any sci-fi movie no matter how shit it was just because it was sci-fi. This movie is a golden apple in my head. I remember the look, I remember the action, I remember thinking shit I wish I could be in a videogame!

I really miss the right-angle turns. It made them seem super fast and super difficult to maneuver. Yeah, these are just not cool enough.

While the right angle turns were awesome and intense. Do you realize what happened to videogames when they were able to move outside of straight lines? Imagine having to dodge an S curve instead of a straight line. Talk about fucking intense!

Tron was terrible.

No, it wasn't.

But Daft Punk sucks.

I saw that, figgy.

Posted by: Jay at July 27, 2009 2:48 PM

That's what it looks like! I never saw Tron, but just looking at this trailer...it's....racing vehicles and day-glo and lots of vroooooooooooooom and visual chaos.

Posted by: figgy at July 27, 2009 2:51 PM

The word is not "chaos", it's "fantastic". If this is half as fun as "Speed Racer" I'll be quite happy.

Posted by: Jay at July 27, 2009 2:54 PM

daft punk sells it.

fuck the haters.

this movie is a legal excuse for possession of LSD

I'm there.

There is no reason why this movie HAS to be as hollow on plot as the first simply because:
A) it is a Disney film, and
B) the first on was.

So what if the first movie was weak on plot? The Wendy Carlos soundtrack and the first glimpses of CG were awesome as a kid. It was a completely different world. I loved it then and still do. Today, I find the stark computer world of the early 80's is both ancient and refreshing when compared to the busy, often overwrought stuff we get today.

And while life inside the computer has been done by others since the originator and original Tron, so what? Look, here comes ANOTHER movie about cops and drugs! Look, some teenagers are going to be horribly mutilated and killed by an unstoppable evil wearing a [gasp] mask! Sheesh.

I'm looking forward to this re-invention, although I have to confess that eye-candy and music score won't be enough anymore to win me over.

I fancy watching a film about motorcycles with no story. I also want to pay using coins so that they can be thrown at the cashiers eyes. I don't want deep, I want shallow and a sense of contempt on the night for all those who happen to be there.

I agree with the first rewiew, I would like to see craptacular, and if it happens to be good with a good story then I suppose I will begrudgingly accept that

see you all there Tarts, Hoes and bitches
