Tron 2: Electric Boogaloo (Hey That Kinda Fits!)

tron-guy-remake.jpg

This one goes out to all the Tron fans out there. You exist, right? It seems nerd friendly enough to have a following. A guy goes into a video game and fights The Master Computer! The perils of technology! Do you play the game or does the game play you?!

That’s what Tron is about, right? I swear I’ve seen it but I think I remember the video game versions more. And Kingdom Hearts, anyone? I know there are fans of that here.

Maybe the Tron: Legacy trailer will help my memory

Oh THAT’S why it has fans. Light Cycles and Energy Frisbees. I don’t even think I need to sell you on this movie. Look at that. TWO Jeff Bridgeses. One old. One slightly creepily rendered with CGI. Speaking of the CGI, I really dig the negative space thing they’ve got going on. Glowy accents on darkness, just like inside of a computer. And if Jeff Bridges isn’t enough acting for you, it also will have Michael Sheen.

Want more incentive? As far as I know, Daft Punk is still doing the soundtrack.

And that’s a light airplane thing at the end. That appeals to the hardcore Tron fan, right? Either way it’s definitely a very unique world and I think we can expect some crazy shit.

I’m really interested in what someone with more Tron knowledge thinks of this. I call it true to the original. Prove me wrong, nerds.

What, are the Pajiba hipster brigade hating on Tron now?

Da fuck

Looks slick. But the first trailer was so much more compelling. This is more like, not "meh." But something just better than "meh."

Tron was one of those movies that I used to watch all the time when I was little, so it has some sentimental value to me.
I'm really excited for this one. It looks completely awesome and I love that they're retaining the aesthetic, but fleshing things out with the animation technology it deserves.

I'm so down for this.

Posted by: Sassafrass Green at July 22, 2010 6:27 PM

I didn't see the first trailer; this one, on the other hand, has me saying "yes, do want."

Posted by: sistercoyote at July 22, 2010 6:30 PM

That looks pretty sweet.

But don't tell Adam that, apparently. He'll knock your books out of your hands and demand your lunch money if you dare say that looked cool.

Posted by: HoJu at July 22, 2010 6:42 PM

For me the first movie went off the rails the same time that the light cycles did.

I'm still in for this, though.

"Hey, let's give this trailer review to the young guy, kids like video games and shiny stuff, right?"

According to FB, there were a few Pajibans at the Comic-Con Tron panel.* Would it kill you guys to coordinate this shit so the person reviewing the trailer actually knows what he/she is talking about?

Posted by: Brenton at July 22, 2010 6:51 PM

Well, this is relevant to my Tron experience thus far. Looks cool, maybe I should see the first one?

Posted by: esme at July 22, 2010 7:01 PM

Well, at least it's not lupus.

Posted by: DeckOfficer!! at July 22, 2010 7:09 PM

Those IDIOTS. The idea of Two Flynns may not be novel or original, but dog damn them, way to fucking ruin even a mild surprise.

Posted by: idiosynchronic at July 22, 2010 7:24 PM

I have a light boner. Wait! I mean light as in luminescence not weight. Whew, glad I caught that one.

Posted by: admin at July 22, 2010 7:25 PM

THERE ARE NO HINGED DOORS IN TRON WORLD!!!!
NON-RIGHT ANGLE LIGHTCYCLES!!!

WTF IS THIS SHITE?!?!!?!?

Posted by: XxiixX at July 22, 2010 7:43 PM

I'm actually pretty impressed by the young-Bridges CGI. May have to watch the trailer again more closely, but on first impression - no Uncanny Valley syndrome at all. Way to go, CGI guys.

Posted by: Dill The Devil at July 22, 2010 7:50 PM

Olivia Wilde tweeted that Michael Sheen is the King of the Con. And for that? I will likely see this.

Posted by: Sefa at July 22, 2010 8:25 PM

Was there something in that trailer that was supposed to impress?

Sheeeee.

Posted by: Jerce at July 22, 2010 9:14 PM

I think Michael Sheen is my new Christian Bale. I'll give him a chance regardless of the movie, for now anyway.

Posted by: Brenton at July 22, 2010 9:41 PM

I was in from the first trailer but that one made me tingly in the pants.

It would have been nice to save some of the awesome for when I saw the movie though.

Posted by: HappyGobo at July 22, 2010 9:56 PM

I am definitely up for this. I loved the first Tron movie. I once rented it from the local video store when I was like 7 and watched it over and over and over again, all day. I loved the arcade game and played pretty much every Tron game on my Intellivision.

I am still sad that I no longer have my old light cycle toy. Those were sweet.

I'm just glad to see Garrett Hedlund getting work in something that doesn't involve Lindsay Lohan and/or a crappy cgi dragon. He's dreamy.

Posted by: natalie at July 22, 2010 10:32 PM

fake flynn looks OMG horrible!

i dunno if tis is worse than the cgi arnie we saw in Salvation but man! it's bad.

why ppl dun stick with make up effects is byond me.

just like T4, all the awesome CG effects is gonna marred by tis one face cg screwup.

I'm only 23 so I will fully admit that Tron is before my time. But I saw it a couple days ago and I have to say the new one looks sweeeet. The whole artificial looking Flynn is purposeful (the original programs in Tron looked liked they had been rendered in 1970, which is saying something since the rest had been rendered in 1984 tech.)

I'm excited to see Flynn vs. MCP vs. Flynn's son in Disney 3d. Say what you want about the evil corporation but they know how to make an entertaining flick.

My largest complaint, coming from a guy who has watched the original 4 times this week alone, is that they have strayed from the original Syd Mead artwork and the general artistic concept and design of the original movie.

That's not saying I don't dig the concept of the sequel itself, but my biggest grievance thus far is that it doesn't look enough like the original movie. It's too modern and sleek. The suits in the original, such as the one the tron guy adorns, are incredibly detailed. Each character has their own pattern and design and are all very unique. Again, this goes back to the Syd Mead influence. The guy is a legend.

If you ever get the chance, check out the making of Tron bit on the 20th anniversary DVD. The amount of work that went into making the original film with the mixture of backlighting effects, prehistoric CGI and completely artificial landscapes was astoundingly complicated to create. It also has two cut scenes that allude to sex between tron and yori. Giggidy.

"The whole artificial looking Flynn is purposeful (the original programs in Tron looked liked they had been rendered in 1970, which is saying something since the rest had been rendered in 1984 tech.)"

i'm sorry but i watched the original and i dun remember seeing anyone looking fake. esp. the main yellow striped baddie who this new Fake Flynn is suppose to b now.

ok, lets not even talk bout fake flynn. watch the trailer again where Flynn talked to his son for the last time. young Flynn a.k.a Fake Flynn looks ho-rri-ble!

why cudnt they find the same ppl who worked on Patrick Dempsey in Made of Honor?

Posted by: haplo at July 23, 2010 3:13 AM

It will take Thermonuclear Warfare for me to not see this movie.

Posted by: OrRoy at July 23, 2010 3:18 AM

As much as I do want to see Tron Legacy, I REALLY want the soundtrack like RIGHT NOW.

Posted by: TylerDFC at July 23, 2010 7:43 AM

As one of the resident supernerds, I cannot WAIT for TR2N, or T2ON, or whatever the hell they called it early on.

Someone commented above lamenting the loss of the original designs. Yeah, I'm with you there...but if you look at a computer from 1984 and 2010, there's not much similarity there either...maybe aside from a recognizable keyboard. Hell most computers back then didn't even use mice yet.

So yeah, bring on the Flynn. Bring on the Tron. Bring on the Flynn Jr. I'll be there with 3D glasses and popcorn lapping up every geekotron (see what I did there?) moment.

Posted by: Green Lantern at July 23, 2010 11:44 AM

Ok stop. Hold the fuck up. WTF is with that CGIed Jeff Bridges???? I canted even watch any more of the trailer I'm so scared right now. WTF!

Posted by: Candy at July 23, 2010 3:07 PM

"but if you look at a computer from 1984 and 2010, there's not much similarity there either"

Last time I checked it's what's on the inside that counts. Computers are still circuit boards and wires. Even if the mode of their containment has gotten more sleek.

I'm just sayin that when you get renowned guys like Moebius and Mead doing designs, you might want to stick more closely to those designs. (The recognizer and light cycles do look cool though.)

Posted by: Some Guy at July 23, 2010 6:14 PM

@some guy I agree with the other comment...things have changed so much with a computer (memory, internet, etc) that the virtual world would have changed as well...and note the chick says about flynn 'he's the creator' thus he possibly had an effect on the look of the landscape'...i might be reaching there...
i'm a huge fan of the original (saw it when it first came out..and own the DVD)...i think the effects look awesome...and Clu 'CGI young Bridges' looks cool to me...
I think they did this one up right and Lucas could learn a thing or two about not rushing out sequels...

I hope Tron Guy has a cameo. That is the only thing that could further increase teh awesome of this movie.

Posted by: Amandahugandkiss at July 24, 2010 12:21 PM

i don't know, i was a kid when the original tron came out so i am the target market, and i didnt care for the original, and yet, i am stoked about this sequel. subconscious reverie?

i loved the last star fighter, adventures in the forbidden zone, buckaroo banzai, the black hole as well as the big movies from the era like ET or Empire strikes back.

so why does a tron retread fill me with delight when the original couldnt sell me as a kid
