You've Been Tricked, Motherf**ker

Here’s the trailer for Trick r’ Treat, folks. The cool thing about it is, if you stick your face really close to the screen and turn the volume way up, it will scare the bejesus out of you. Then again, if you did the same thing with a trailer for Bambi, it’d probably scare you, too. You know what a baby deer’s tail looks like close up? The Saw franchise hasn’t seen nothing.

Trick r’ Treat comes from writer/director Michael Dougherty, who wrote the script for Superman Returns (ahh, you fucking hack) and X2 (oh, well … ) and Urban Legends: Bloody Mary (…?). The movie has been making the festival rounds for the last year or so, and it’ll head straight to DVD on October 6th. It has a decent cast for what’s, ultimately, a straight-to-DVD horror movie: Dylan Baker, Brian Cox, Leslie Bibb, and Tahmoh Penikett. Also, the trailer is edited in such a way that it shows a few glimpses of a woman who looks like Anna Paquin, but she’d never be in a movie like … what? That is Anna Paquin? Oh, sweetie. You have an Oscar, you know. (oooh. SRL idea: The Five Oscar Winners and Nominees who have fallen the farthest).

Anyway, check out the trailer. There are a ton of fawning quotes from critics in it, although they’re all from fanboy sites, so take it with a grain of Doritos salt and a doobie. If it were really that great, you think it’d go straight to DVD?

What! Don't try to squash my hopes for this movie. I have a total horrorboner for it, as I'm sure any self-respecting horror fan does by now. So yeah, I think it's gonna be that great.

And anyway, Helo is in it.

Posted by: Samanthrax at September 10, 2009 10:53 AM

1. I r scared.

2. In the beginning, we got that Halloween through the killer mask view - that was cool.

3. I think the Dad is creepy.

4. Even though Anna Paquin won an Oscar as a child, as an adult she seems to have studied at the Eliza Dushku School.

Posted by: Cindy at September 10, 2009 11:01 AM

Anna Paquin? Yes, please.

Posted by: NJ at September 10, 2009 11:02 AM

Please, 5 Oscar winners who shot their wad?

I don't know....kind of looks like it's taking itself too seriously.

Posted by: admin at September 10, 2009 11:10 AM

Robin Williams was nominated for "Good Morning, Vietnam," "Dead Poet's Society" AND "The Fisher King." Note how old the youngest of those movies is.

Heeeeloooooooo! I don't need to know anything else. That dude is fucking awesome.

Even though Anna Paquin won an Oscar as a child, as an adult she seems to have studied at the Eliza Dushku School.

So true, and I just don't understand it. How can someone get so much WORSE with maturity and experience?

Aw, Affleck is climbing back up, even if it is behind the camera (funnily enough, that is what he won it for anyway).

CZJ won an Oscar? For what, Traffic? I had no idea. Anyway, I would put Mira Sorvino on before her. That was a DROP so far I can't even hear the echo of the hit on the bottom. Still considering it was more of a "couldn't get work" than "did shitty work" for both of them, i can't be to hard on them.

Except in my pants. There, I can be nice and hard on them for as long as I want. Yum.

Once again, Dustin, you should probably stay away from horror movies and leave their review to people who actually watch and enjoy the genre. Trick 'R Treat has been getting great festival buzz since the film was made for its Halloween 2008 release. That Warner Bros. shelved it for a year, eventually dumping it to DVD, is a mystery to practically everyone who has seen it. I, for one, am looking forward to owning it.

Posted by: David at September 10, 2009 11:42 AM

Some thoughts:

-He can Tahmoh my Penikett any day of the week, baby. Hubba, hubba.
-Paquin won her Oscar when she was, like, 11, right?
-Creepshow much?
-I sincerely doubt it "unfolds like Pulp Fiction".
-Listen, don't knock straight-to-DVD. Was Ginger Snaps ever released in a theater? And look how awesome that is!

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at September 10, 2009 11:43 AM

Also,

-I hate the new layout of stuff on the left!
-Well, to be fair, I just dislike change.
-Although in honesty, I only dislike change when it first happens. I actually like change.
-Wasn't this the way the layout was before it moved to the center and we all bitched about that?
-Dustin must really enjoy listening to us whine.
-I like the new layout of stuff on the left.

Wow I hope that's ironic hipster douchebaggery and not actual mincing snark. This thing is a fun and scary Halloween movie that's actually about..holy shit...Halloween. This was supposed to hit screens 2 years ago and for a number of dipshit reasons is only now getting released, and only to DVD, and only with special features on the Screw-ray version. It's been a long and torturous process watching this refreshing concept languish in distribution hell while theaters spew a neverending stream of shitty studio horror movies featuring retread plots and bitches in skinny jeans bitching their bitchy way through a bitchy world of rusty traps and twitching children revealed in bathroom mirrors.

Posted by: laredo at September 10, 2009 11:50 AM

Yes, AvB, Ginger Snaps was released in theaters. But only in Canada.

Posted by: Snath at September 10, 2009 11:50 AM

Damn! Well, there goes that point then. But...No! surely something has been sent straight to DVD that was actually decent? I know there has. I know it! They can't release that many shitty movies into theaters thinking they're going to make tons of money and not sometimes release good movies only on DVD? (Think, damn you, think! I know I've seen something!)

My point is, "straight-to-DVD" doesn't necessarily have to equal bad.

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at September 10, 2009 11:59 AM

Aw, it is so nice to see the Sack Mask kid from El Orfanato still getting work. Good for him!

Posted by: Pinky McLadybits (aka Dangle McGee) at September 10, 2009 12:00 PM

Mmmmmh Doritos salt and a doobie. Gaaaah.

I will need both to make this movie watchable but watch it i totally will!

Posted by: JenVegas at September 10, 2009 12:06 PM

I've got your first two Oscar winners that have fallen from grace:

Cuba Gooding Jr.
Jon Voight

I saw "Love Boat" again on TBS the other day. Christ, that movie sucks worse than a 2 dollar coke whore who's getting her leg nawed off by rabid wolverines.

Then again, that shows her commitment to earning her 2 bucks by continuing to blow you while under mortal peril.

You go, working girl!

Posted by: Doric at September 10, 2009 12:14 PM

It's significantly more than a straight to DVD horror film. I'm not going through how the film had at least seven release dates through Warner Brothers before they dumped it and let another company pick up the scraps and send it to DVD.

It's also pretty damn incredible and a lot of fun. It's a must for anthology horror fans, even if the film tries to market itself as something else. I met the director three years ago at a convention. It's an anthology horror by his own admission.

Posted by: Robert at September 10, 2009 12:36 PM

It's gotta be Cuba Gooding, Jr., right? Snow Dogs, Boat Trip, and Radio alone merit a separate wing at the Razzies.

Unless one of the criteria is that the person drummed him or herself right out of the business. Cuba's been working, he just hasn't been working out.

It can't be Anna Paquin, what with the X-Men franchise and True Blood. Her failures, unlike Cuba's, have been mostly noble attempts, e.g., Amistad, Buffalo Soldiers, and she's had some pretty good supporting roles in some pretty good films, like The Squid and the Whale, 25th Hour and A Walk on the Moon. "Child Star Becomes Successful Working Character Actor" is really her tagline.

Posted by: socalledonlycousins at September 10, 2009 12:43 PM

Say what you want about Helo, babies, but I always think of Tahmoh Penikett as the guy who played opposite Tori Spelling in the Crack Whore Stole Our Embryo epic Hush.

He played a serious cock in that movie, and we were supposed to think he was a good guy.

Posted by: Melodie at September 10, 2009 12:45 PM

Ooh, Vermillion, forgot about Mira. Mira who? Jeezus, really, where the FUCK did she go?

She should just blow Woody again...oh, wait, that was what your last sentence was about. Disregard.

Posted by: dammitjanet at September 10, 2009 12:53 PM

As other have pointed out, you really missed the boat on this one, Dustin.

Between this and "All the Boys Love Mandy Lane" there are a couple of supposedly great horror movies that the studios are inexplicably sitting on. I don't think there is a horror fan out there that doesn't know about "Trick R Treat". I had the wallpaper up on my computer last year when there were rumors it was finally getting a Halloween release. Supposedly the "Saw" series "owns" Halloween and WB was gun shy about releasing a Halloween themed movie at any other time of year. Probably why the recent "Halloween 2" came out in August. Also it sounds like the director pissed in the wrong WB executive's pot.

The first trailer for this was on the "300" DVD. I will be buying it day of release on Blu Ray and have heard nothing but great things.

Posted by: TylerDFC at September 10, 2009 1:11 PM

I saw this last year at a screening when Warner Brothers was still trying to decide if they wanted to attempt a theatrical release.

It's not revelatory, but it was a fun movie. I'd recommend it with tempered expectations. I enjoyed the anthology aspect, and it felt like a throwback to the days when horror made you laugh and jump instead of just making you cringe, as tends to be the practice these days (e.g., Hostel, Saw, etc.). The extent to which they maximized production value shows up on screen; I was very impressed and was expecting something less polished. I was honestly very surprised this wasn't a slam dunk for at least a limited theatrical release, so in my opinion "straight-to-DVD" doesn't say much in this case.

So why didn't they try a release? Two reasons, I think.

1) It's so Halloween-holiday-specific that it could truly only be released in October (unlike...confusingly...Rob Zombie's Halloween), and I guess the studio did not want to counter-program against whatever established gorefest sequel was trying to corner the scare market.

2) (SLIGHT SPOILERS) Children die in it, and the buzz was the studio was not too comfortable with having that element in a fun scare movie. Seems very wimpy to me, but whatever.

If it were really that great, you think it’d go straight to DVD?

Keep in mind, this was one of the stellar decisions Alan Horn and the idiots at Warner Brothers had made in the past couple years or so. This falls under the same umbrella as pushing Half Blood Prince back to this summer, limiting the shit out of RockNRolla's release, and selling Slumdog Millionaire to Fox Searchlight. C'mon, I bitched about this on my blog months ago, HAVEN'T YOU PEOPLE BEEN READING?!

(Note: I'm not really expecting an answer, or even for people to be reading, but I figured I can't pass up a good time to play the role of raving prophet.)

Posted by: Doctor Controversy at September 10, 2009 2:43 PM

I saw this film last year at an AICN screening and it is TERRIBLE. I almost walked out 20 minutes into it but forced myself to remain seated because I wanted to see just how bad/predictable it could get.

It rips off so many other (better) horror films, I lost count by the end.

Stay FAR AWAY from this crap-fest.

Posted by: ShinyKatesShineRag at September 10, 2009 4:50 PM

I'm sure this has been said already, but you're dismissing this as a straight to dvd movie. It was never intended to be such - the studio really screwed up on this one and I've only heard things thus far from people who've seen it.

Posted by: Matt at September 10, 2009 5:51 PM

First off, as far as the "5 Oscar Winners," I didn't see anyone mention Kevin Spacey. K-Pax, anyone? Or how about Pay it Forward? I could go on and on.

Second, I totally want to see this movie. I'll probably buy it. Dylan Baker and Brian Cox being in it is just gravy as far as I'm concerned.

Last, I've mentioned before that I find Tahmoh Penikett fascinating because I've been unable to make up my mind whether he can act at all or not. With this movie, maybe I'll get a chance to see him do "scared" and finally figure it out.

Posted by: Jerce at September 10, 2009 6:30 PM

Yeah. The studio dropped the ball on this. It's a great flick.

Posted by: Brian at September 10, 2009 10:07 PM

Most of the horror films that fans revere as "classics" from the late 70s and early 80s would never see the flickering light of a movie theatre were they released today.

A Hollywood studio would shitcan the theatrical release of Suspiria and delay the DVD release until they could get their shitty remake with a hip-hop score in theatres.

Halloween would get picked up by a studio trying to make its bones, and while it would actually get on screens and make some crazy scrilla, the distribution company would fall apart attempting to go public and John Carpenter would never make another movie.

Shudder.
