What If You're Not Meant to Love the One You Love?

Well, I’m sold. Of course, I’m usually sold on Matt Damon flicks, but the trailer for The Adjustment Bureau pretty much has me hooked. It’s a bit of a change of pace for Damon — a romantically-tinged sci-fi thriller is a new addition to his resume. It’s got a beast of a cast — Damon, the lovely Emily Blunt, The Hurt Locker’s Anthony Mackie, “Mad Men” star John Slattery, and Terence Stamp in full-on creepy motherfucker mode. Directed by first-timer George Nolfi (who wrote the screenplay for The Bourne Ultimatum), it’s based on a Philip K. Dick short story, “Adjustment Team,” albeit loosely so. The synopsis:

Do we control our destiny, or do unseen forces manipulate us? Matt Damon stars in the thriller The Adjustment Bureau as a man who glimpses the future Fate has planned for him and realizes he wants something else. To get it, he must pursue the only woman he’s ever loved across, under and through the streets of modern-day New York.

The trailer gives a good bit more than that away, and the story has a bit of a Dark City-ish feel to it (not that that’s a bad thing, mind you). Anyway, see for yourselves and let me know what you think, particularly those of you who have read the story.

What's with the hat?

Oh Matt Damon, you go get that ManicPixieDreamGirl: British Edition. Don't let the PIC stop you.

I'm all for anything adapted from a Philip K. Dick's work. I haven't read this one, but this might have inspired to do such.

Anything loosely adapted from PKD is usually leagues better than things directly adapted from him (compare Blade Runner and, I dunno, Paycheck).

Also, this looks perfect.

Count me in, PKD all day every day. Except for the Paycheck adaptation, yeesh!

Hum, so there's this major conspiracy adjustments team that makes sure everyone follows their destiny. What happens if you're on the major conspiracy adjustments team and you don't want to be?

I'm still open to the pixie, I suppose, but I don't need manic in my life.

Well that's the sequel, innit?

It looks interesting. I just have a difficult time watching anything with Emily Blunt in it since she stole my boyfriend. Stupid thin girl with cool accent, stealing my Krasinski...

As Harry Burns would say, he's too tall to talk to anyway.

Posted by: Jay at May 13, 2010 11:45 AM

It looks like it has potential. As long as it avoids the schmaltz.

Oooh. I love me some Matt Damon. And I am quite fond of Emily Blunt. And the story is intriguing. So yeah, count me in.

I'm with FabMax. That hat is distracting. I'm not saying it's as bad as the shag Tom Hanks fashioned in The Di Vinci Code, but it's in the same ballpark.

Adjustment Bureau makes me think of a secret government agency run by chiropractors, like they freeze time and randomly adjust people.

Which really, if that were true, would be cool. I definitely need an adjustment now and then and I can never find time to go to a chiropractor. If they could freeze time and do it, whoopee.

Much as I like Emily Blunt, I wish the GF in the movie was Franke Potente.

John Slattery is SO COOL. Like ice. Like a popsicle. A luscious, juicy popsicle.

Posted by: esme at May 13, 2010 1:37 PM

Stella,

I agree on both counts.

My chiropractor would so be on the Adjustment Bureau. Her sense of humor is just strange enough to find that awesome.

Also, I will see this movie. I'm in on any PKD adaptation that doesn't star Nicolas "The Bees" Cage.

So Dark City plus Fedoras minus the aliens. No thanks, I'll stick to the original.

The chiropractor my sister and I used to go to would fit right in as the Adjustment Bureaus's zany sidekick - I swear the woman said the oddest things. She once told my sister that it was impossible for a Polish person to be a vegetarian. Like it somehow went against the laws of nature, m'kay?

Matt Damon is a seriously great guy. Emily Blunt is very pretty and very fun to watch (haven't seen enough of her stuff to say more)
Story looks cool. Ya?

you know i'll read your review first

So.

Eternal Sunshine (running with a girl he doesn't want to lose) + Vanilla Sky (running from a fate he doesn't want) + Catch Me If You Can (running with a hat).

Eh. I'll still see it.

Posted by: groovekiller at May 14, 2010 2:33 AM

To everyone talking about how distracting the hat is, I am much more distracted by his shirt and the question whether or not it's coming off anytime soon.
Seriously though, I love Matt Damon, I like Emily Blunt and it's got Roger Sterling - hell yeah, I'm going to see it. Actually I'm surprised I didn't notice more excitement about Roger over at Ironman 2 . . . but anyway, Matt Damon!
