Diane Lane Races Horses, Is Still Beautiful

I thought Seabiscuit was pretty good. Tobey Maguire was a bit off as the jockey, but overall, it was an enjoyable film. I dig horse racing films overall — honestly, I just like movies about animals (as long as they’re not about special ops hamsters or some other dumb shit). In any event, it’s a bit of a surprise that a movie about Secretariat hasn’t been made before. Arguably the most well-known race horse, Secretariat was one of only 11 horses to win the U.S. Triple Crown, and when he did it in 1973, no one had done so in 25 years. It’s a pretty compelling story.

Now, Disney (of course) has a film adaptation due out, and I have to admit, the trailer looks fun. They’ve got a juggernaut of a cast — Diane Lane, John Malkovich, Scott Glenn, James Cromwell, Dylan Baker, and Fred Thompson — so it ain’t exactly short on acting talent. The film focuses on Penny Chenery (Lane), the owner of the horse, and her path to Secretariat’s glory.

Interestingly, the trailer for Secretariat has almost no footage of the jockey. I’m guessing that’s because with they’re trying to pitch the film based on names, and the actor who plays jockey Ron Turcotte is Otto Thorwarth. If you’ve never heard of him, well, that’s because he’s an actual jockey, which I think is an excellent move on their part. Jockeys are of a pretty specific physical type, and even if they’d cast Tom Cruise, he’d still be too tall. Though likely not by much. Regardless, using real jockeys isn’t exactly unprecedented — in fact, Gary Stevens (playing opposing jockey George Woolf) was one of the best parts of Seabiscuit.

Anyway. It’s all very Disneyfied, triumph-of-the-human-spirit-ish, but still. It looks like a good time. Of course, this will likely spawn the inevitable discussion about the pros and cons of horse racing and whether or not it’s cruel, but hey — that’s what comment sections are for.

If you like horse-racing films, check out Pharlap. It's an 80s or early 90s film about an amazing horse from Australia in the 50s/60s who unfortunately had a habit of winning every race he was in so when they brought him to the US......

SPOILER ALERT

.......the mafia couldn't fix the races he was in so they killed him.

I admit to enjoying Seabiscuit although I thought the story itself was good enough to stand on its own and didn't need all the anvilicious imagery that they felt the need to introduce.

As a horse riding person I'm really looking forward to this. There was something about Seabiscuit I just didn't like and this looks to be a lot more fun. Even though I thought Tobey Maguire was great as the jockey, maybe the movie was too long? Who knows.

Confession: I am a sucker for Disney sports movies. And I love horses. I will most likely be seeing this, even though I thought the monologue in the beginning of the trailer was über-cheesy.

Also: I'm surprised that they didn't get SJP to play Secretariat. Please tell me she's not already filming S&TC3: Carrie My Feed Bag.

(Oh, come on. Like nobody was going to make a Horsey McLongFace joke.)

I have NO idea why Diane Lane isn't working the ho stroll over at Lifetime, she's basically a Jennifer Aniston stand-in at this point. Who the hell keeps greenlighting big screen projects for this woman? Seriously.

Yep I'll go to see this. Have horses, ride out daily etc. But I am not a fan of horse themed movies. Hidalgo was fucking horrific, I just couldn't take all those fucking shots of the horse puling it's Bue Steal look.
As for racing being cruel..... Its cruel for the poor bastards who work in a racing yard thats for sure.

It took all my heart and soul but I manage to forgave Diane for Under The Tuscany Sun.
She is still my girl if she wants me back.
Diane: Call me. You know my number.

I didn't see Seabiscuit, but I thought the book was fabulous. One of those things I picked up presuming it was overhyped and was promptly proven wrong. Love that!

Paddydog, I'm not a big animal person, but the spoiler you provided is really disturbing. Who the hell does that? And, also, do you think The Sopranos was riffing on that with Pie oh My?

Phar Lap was a good movie and yes, it is surprising to us now that a horse might be *spoiler* offed by the mafia** but in that time and place, horse racing was HUGE. I thought that my crush on Tom Burlinson knew no bounds after Man from Snowy River, but Phar Lap really cinched the deal.

Interestingly, after a 25 year gap, Secretariat took the Triple Crown, and then just four years later two other horses won it. And then, nothing. No other horse has come close to winning the Triple Crown. I just hope it happens in my lifetime.
Secretariat's story is compelling for sure: *30* lengths in the Belmont, holy shit. I can't wait to see that in the movie.

But I personally like Seattle Slew for his rags to riches story or Affirmed, with his epic head to head battles with Alydar... those would make awesome movies.
Really, I have no problem with Hollywood making any movie about these race horses. They were amazing, back when horses were bred to run, instead of run enough to win a few races then go to the breeding barn.

Hell, they should make a movie about Barbaro, at least then people could see how dangerous racing can be for these animals.

I'm not so fond of horse racing but, dammit, HORSES!!!!

I will watch this just to see the horses. It's a hold over from my Black Beauty, National Velvet, The Black Stallion and My Friend Flicka days.

My mom never did buy me that horse...did get a nifty microscope though!

This trailer is entirely too heartwarming and plucky and off-brand kooky to make me interested, even despite Nelson Ellis and Dylan Baker. Anyway, the Black Stallion is the best horse (racing) movie OF ALL TIME, NOW AND FOREVER.

This looks to be pretty good. Secretariat's owner rejected many scripts over the past 35 years and finally approved this one, so I hope it was worth the wait. Phar Lap raced in the 1930s and was a hero in Australia. His hide is on display at a museum there. The movie is one of the best racing films ever.

"The First Saturday in May" is a great doc about the 2006 KY Derby and just released last weekend is "John Henry, The Steel-Driving Racehorse", about another amazing rags-to-riches racehorse. I highly recommend both to horse fans :)

I hope the movie is better than the trailer.

Big Red! (Secretariat) Finally!!!!!!

I had the privileage of working on this film as a principal extra and met Secretariat when i was a young girl. My dad told the story of Secretariat to me over and over as a child and I was hooked.
I was born in 1973 and happen to love horses so this movie is special for me.

Seabiscuit was ok (worth watching) But they missed all the cute little quirks he actually posessed. I actually like the Secretariat trailer and have was pleasantly surprised. I believe that Penny Chennery Tweedy would not have approved this script if it were not appropriate also there were others who provided input such as Bil Mac who wrote Secretariats biography "The Making of a Champion"

What I want most is for the story to be told to a whole new generation and for Disney to include real race footage and a photo of Secretariat at the end and how he passed away. None of the horses they used came close to looking like Secretariat therefore it's important to show him as he was somewhere in the film.

This is a must see film about the greatest horse in the world.

october 8th everyone is post time!

RE: Diane Lane as an alleged has been huh?

She's hot even in her 40's and oh yeah she is an academy award winner idiot!!!

You might think she is a jennifer Aniston stand in -whats funny about that statement is that Diane Lane is actually much prettier and more diverse as an actress.

I like them both!

Hell sign me up i'll be either of there stand ins anytime and I'm younger.

Usually actors get green lighted because people go see their films duhhhhh!

Having just read an excerpt of tom foleys new book I imediately ordered it. How great it would have been to have this goodlooking amazingly talented and sensitive man as the jockey for secretariat.Once again disney fails royally.I dont even understand why they are calling this movie secretariat,as it really has little to do with the amazing animal or the man who rode him.It should have been called the Penny Tweety story. Once again these amazing animals suffer. If people really knew what goes on in horseracing with these beautiful animals they would shutter to say the least. Often times the treatment is so barbaric it defies immagination.Maybe this is Gods way that horseracing is taking a dive right now.At onetime horseracing was an amazing sport. Now it is corrupt seedy and cruel, but of course with a movie like this that will never be seen. Sadder is the poor folks who live on the backside. Most of the dorms I have seen are reminiscent of prison cells. They are 10 x 10 concrete block no drywall,no plumbing and one light. These luxurious sweets are reserved for the lucky ones others often live in there cars or in empty stalls, yet they are being treated well as compared to some of the horses they tend.I hope everyone will avoid this movie and save there money to buy tom foleys book the simple game.Maybe someday they will make a movie about SECRETARIAT and TOM FOLEY will ride him.Regardless stardom is surely awaiting him. I hope I get the opportunity to attend one of his book signings and thank him.Wake up people and demand change to save a sport I dearly love.
