Back Into The Nightmare

A couple of weeks ago, I watched [Rec] for the first time. I’m not ashamed to admit that it scared the hell out of me. The Spanish film, written and directed by Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza, was a brilliant entry into the reality/horror genre, effectively using the first person, documentary-style filming to present a compelling and intense experience. It submerges the viewer into a claustrophobic nightmare with little explanation or background, leaving you just as confused and terrified as its cast.

Now, as is the case with all successful films, it’s getting a sequel. On the bright side, unlike some sequels, it’s being brought to us by the original film makers — Plaza and Balagueró returned to both write and direct, so at least we can assume it’ll be faithful to the original. Check the trailer out (warning — it’s red band, though I’m not sure why):

Interesting. Seems to start off right where the original ended, adding in an Aliens-style military force sent in to find out what the hell is going on. The trailer is a little too jittery to get a solid feel for it, but honestly, I’m sold regardless. The first one was too good not to be interested.

I saw this last week. It was good, but didn't scare me as much as the first one. Still a solid sequel though, and the story works really well.

I think I'm going to have to wait for the DVD, it looks very shaky-cam. I can ride roller coasters, but shaky-cam makes me unbearably nauseated.

I'm sorry. Am I to understand from this trailer the protagonist didn't die in the original? Bullshit retconing. I do not approve. It's like "Oh, look, Juno's alive" in The Descent 2. It just doesn't make sense. Next they'll make Drag Me to Hell 2 and a certain character will be right back on earth like nothing happened.

I wonder are they going to delay the DVD release of [REC] 2, like they did the original [REC] until they've had a chance to make and release an American version of it?

It does actually pick up right where the first one ends, meaning that when I started watching I was completely freaked out before anything actually happened. But it went downhill from there. Don't get me wrong, it's interesting, but the rest of the movie just isn't as scary as the original.

Robert, don't worry. It makes sense. In the context of the movie, anyway.

Good, J. K. Barlow. I've been looking forward to [Rec] 2 and was worried I'd have to cast it away like so many other ill-conceived horror sequels.

Saw it as well. Add me to the "not a huge letdown" pile.

There IS a twist some people won't buy but in the context of the film, I did.
