My Dad is Killer

While I still love “Dexter,” I feel like each season has gone down a little in overall quality. So I’ve been planning to come into Season Four, which starts in late September, with well-tempered expectations. There’s now a trailer for the season, which dropped at Comic-Con last weekend, which gives us a glimpse of two of the more significant things about the season: Dexter the daddy and John Lithgow the baddy. And while the trailer doesn’t necessarily cause me to drop my tempered expectations entirely, I think I have at least taken them off the fire early, leaving ‘em pinkish medium-well-tempered expectations (Jesus that’s fucking terrible writing, but I’m tired and on a plane and trying to avoid punching the crusty old coot behind me in his neck goiter, so I’m not going back to fix it — deal with it).

gawd... I still have the 2nd half of the 3rd season unwatched on my dvr... I just... I just can't watch it... it got so...so... bad... and I love me some Dexter... I suffered through the insufferable 2nd season... with the bitch fire starter-who-must-not-be-named... and I just couldn't do it anymore... I will probably watch this... eventually... but man... john lithgow... FUCK! way to make me want to want you again Dexter!

I just hope we see the ghost of Miguel Prado haunting Dexter like the ghost of the Ice Truck Killer did in Season 2

Is this when a show typically jumps the shark? Let's add a baby and John Lithgow. That'll do it!

How does he continue to get better-looking every season? It's like what Leslie Mann says about Paul Rudd in Knocked Up. He just keeps getting better-looking the older he gets.

Hurray! so happy to have Keith Carradine back. I loved his guest arc. And, you know, motherfuckin Lithgow! I have faith that its going to be good.

I'm really excited for this. I actually thought last season was quite good, making up for the abomination that was the crazy-bitch story arc.

S2 was the nadir; S3 gave us a little bit of an upswing...I am resigned to the idea that this show will never again achieve the awesome that was S1, but I'm okay with that, because it's still one of the best series on my teevee.

I'm completely gaga over the prospect of John Lithgow as a serial murderer in his twilight years. And now I learn that Carradine is back! I can't wait for September.

I agree that season 3 was week. I just never really cared about Miguel Prado, and the flashbacks just got to be way to much. But season 2 was awesome. I loved Jaime Murray's Lila and would love to have her still in the show instead of Rita. I keep hoping Dexter will snap and carve his initials in Rita's lungs.

gah. that was weak. not week. or it was weak each week. ummm... yeah.

People often ask me the same question. Judging from my life style, the answer, apparently, is: by drinking beer, masturbating twice daily and reading Pajiba.

At the same time.

Jimmy Smitts dragged down the last season. As soon as he was gone, Dexter felt back to its old self. Conversely, John Lithgow should be a great (seasonal) addition - he's glorious playing a villain.

And Keith Carradine + Michael C. Hall = orgasmic TV.

I thought Jimmy Smits was pretty good...especially when he started to crack toward the end of the season. He was a much more interesting foil for Dexter than Lila was IMO.

I haven't seen season three yet but I must admit season two was a downswing from the first season. From what I saw in the previews and bits and pieces of three they seemed to keep a Dexter with more...emotion. I didn't like it, the Dexter of the first season wouldn't give a fuck about kids, or how the girlfriend felt. He wouldn't "need" anyone. The fact that he gets married and has a child is just what the fuck to me. Although in this trailer for season 4 he seems to show me once again that he is just a killer, nothing more, nothing less. Like the shot of the "american dream" where he's just sarcastic as shit. John Lithgow is kind of selling me to go ahead and finish three just so I can watch him rule the screen. As for real life, I kind of find it odd that Dexter married his sister on the show. I.e. Michael C Hall and Jennifer Carpenter...everytime I see them on screen now I think "wow, they're fucking when they get off set."

awww shit, Showtime is doing an animated series too, a prequel of sorts.

This show is better than sex (well, it's close). I'd rather watch a mediocre season of 'Dexter' than anything else on TV, cable or otherwise. And I thoroughly enjoyed last season, what with the smooth actressin' of President Santos and all.

On another note, I also find the whole Dexter/Deb off-screen hook up thing very distracting. Kind of like the whole Paquin/Moyer hook up going on over at 'True Blood', but with more incest.

The only way John Lithgow could resurect this crap show is if he stopped by the forest and brought along Harry.

Harry (and Dexter) and the Hendersons. Now THAT I would watch.

Cruise your're so right. I'll choose Dexter over most of the mindless crap on tv anyday. The fact remains that you want to know what happens when he's discovered. I also love how witty the dialogues are. Hall is as always fantatic to watch. I have converted 3 friends so far. Anyone done better?

Posted by: Jean at July 27, 2009 3:24 PM

I don't get all the whining over the supposed crappiness of this show. The acting is fantastic, the story lines are entertaining and Michael C. Hall is strangely sexy to me.
Ok, so the show is slightly less compelling than the first season. BIG DEAL. It's still leagues ahead of 90% of the crap on TV these days.

The only thing wrong with Season 3 was Jimmy Smits. I don't hate the guy, he's just not a good villain. John Lithgow will bring the crazy and I am looking forward to that.

Well thank you very much! I have early class tomorrow, it's already 3 in the morning, and now I have to watch Raising Cain. I hope you're happy?
