“Defying Gravity” is a new show ABC is going to start airing next month. At first glance, the show seems like it has some actual potential, insofar as it’s about a bunch of astronauts living on a space station and it stars Ron Livingston. At second glance, the show looks like “Grey’s Anatomy” in space (no surprise since its creator was an exec product on “Grey’s” and “Ugly Betty”). So fucking in zero-gravity or no fucking in zero-gravity, I can’t imagine I’ll be tuning in on August 2.

lame.
but i loved the headlline 'greeeeeeeeeeeeys iinnnnnnnnnn spacccccccccceee'-that totally made up for the trailer.
ron will always be the jerk who broke up with carrie via sticky note to me. (yeah, i'm being facetious.) actually he'll always be peter gibbons.

aww bummer. I love the idea of a show about astronauts, most definitely the sexiest profession out there. Then again imagining Rainbow Killer losing her tether and floating into the sun is kind of exciting. Maybe there will be a Grey's crossover...

Looks pretty terrible, but I may tune in to laugh at the cheese.

Here's hoping for that crossover!

*starts singing Wicked songs*

Seriously, the title's the most interesting thing in the whole series because it reminds me of Wicked!

I love Ron Livingston--who doesn't?--but this looks just awful, and not the good kind of awful. I don't care if I never hear another word about it.

I'm not sure they can get a lot of mileage out of this show, really. I mean, living on the ISS just isn't that exciting. Interesting, yes, but I don't see how they could make a prime time show out of it. So much about astronaut activity is just science, looking out of windows, and trying not to bump your head on stuff.

What kind of dialogue would they have?

JIM: Hey, Buzz.
BUZZ: Hey, Jim.
JIM: You look out the window today?
BUZZ: Yes.
JIM: Me too. It's about time to put on that
EVA suit and do a spacewalk to repair the
Canada Arm again.
BUZZ: I know. I love that suit. There is nothing
like hurtling 17,000 miles an hour around
Earth wearing a suit you can piss in.
JIM: Word, Buzz. Word.

Here's two reasons why I'll give it a chance: it's Canadian, ABC just picked it up for distribution in the states. And it's being co-produced by the BBC.

But Virtuality can't get picked up?!? I call foul.

Posted by: nutmeag at July 13, 2009 1:19 PM

Oh crap. I'm totally going to watch this.

Sorry.

Posted by: malechai at July 13, 2009 1:44 PM

Virtuality didn't get picked up?! Damn and Blast!
I hate that I'll probably end up watching this. I have a serious Livingston jones.
Stupid stupid me.

Nope, Virtuality will live forever as a TV movie-pilot unless SighFigh goes for it (which it should).

Posted by: nutmeag at July 13, 2009 2:05 PM

Goddamnit, no more Virtuality? That rocked! And there were so many things I wanted to know the answers to! What, were there not enough people screwing each other in zero grav? Which, by the way, probably wouldn't be all that great. Just a lot of flailing around and bouncing off walls. ...Huh. I guess that doesn't sound much different than some of my experiences in regular gravity.

If you're going to base your show in space, show some space stuff already!

No thanks. Not even having Ron Livingston on the show is gonna get me to watch this one.

Canadian-made, you say? Sadly, that just raised the bar that much higher - the show's got a great premise but I'll need more than weak trailers and industry buzz before I consider it viable. How about a real plot and decent writing?

Oh, and ZombieNurse, neat little scene, but for one nitpicky error - the CanadArm is used for making repairs, handling payloads, and scanning for shuttle damage - it hasn't needed repairs yet.

Word! Though dammit, now that song will be stuck in my head for the rest of the night...

I'm excited to see a Dead Like Me alum getting cast in what looks like being a big show (I'll always be bitter that it was cancelled), and Ron Livingston is plenty hot, but there's literally no chance in hell that I'll bother watching this.
