Time, Mr. Freeman?

Are you sick of Hollywood making piles of shitty movies that cost tens, or hundreds, of millions of dollars each? Of course you are, because you’re reading this right now, so here’s some good news. This summer you can tell Roland Emmerich to shove a gold bar up his ass, because you’re giving your money to a movie that cost $1200 to make. Beyond Black Mesa is based on the Half-Life video game series and was filmed with a single Canon HV20, twelve hundred dollars, and two years of post-production. It looks brutal, faithful to the source, and maybe even good.

Check out their YouTube channel for another teaser trailer and lots of commenters saying things like “Epic!” and “Mega!”.

I don't buy it... A lot of running in a trailer is usually a bad sign.

@AlexaCastro

Seconded.

This was a triumph.
I'm making a note here: huge success.
It's hard to overstate my satisfaction.

Maybe Black Mesa.
That was a joke.
Haha.
Fat chance.

Willis, you so funny.

Nice. Good fan film.

I would prefer to see a feature length, live action Freeman's Mind. If they really needed a named celebrity, Ray Romano as Freeman would be a pretty faithful casting to the original.

Especially a Portal like prison escape-mindfuck movie would be cool. I'm going to say like most low budget fan films where the guys have some effects talent; it will look good, but the writing and pacing will be weak to terrible, because thats how these things go. I am an optimist.

Ray Romano? Isn't the running joke of HL2 that Freeman never talks?

Posted by: Neodiogenes at November 15, 2010 4:17 PM

So I see this article and think, "Hmm, Beyond Black Mesa...why does that sound so familiar?" Then I watch the trailer. "Hmm, these actors, why do they look so familiar....WAIT."

I went to college with these guys. Awesome to see this!

Yes, that is the running joke, Neodiogenes. But Freeman's Mind expands upon what is the internal monologue of the character. I recommend checking out the series...

I'm still waiting for Escape From City 17, which had a similarly low budget. Eighteen months and no sign on Part 2, but I'm still hopeful.

THAT'S what that was called, thanks Justin! I couldn't remember what it was called. I honestly just assumed that this movie was an expansion of the idea by the same people. Apparently Half-Life fanfic movies are a thing.

The crowbar! They have the crowbar!! It's the main character in the Half-life games! Hooray for the crowbar!!
