Thor Trailer: The Hammer Of The Gods

I gotta say, Thor is starting to look like fun.

Below is the new trailer for Kenneth Brannagh’s entry into the Avengers saga, Thor. It’s got some new goodies that the previous two didn’t have, including some impressive shots of the frost giants, less S.H.I.E.L.D emphasis and more about the developing relationship between the god of thunder (Chris Hemsworth) and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). It also has more Kat Dennings, which pleases me.

Not bad, eh? Gives a nice view of the scope of the action, which is pretty massive. Clearly it’s going to have extensive action scenes on both Earth and Asgard. Thor looks like he’s going to create some large-scale destruction.

Still not much to see of The Warriors Three (Joshua Dallas, Ray Stevenson and Tadanobu Asano), but there are a few shots of them tossed in for good measure. Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, while more of a fighter and less of a venomous trickster than he is in the comics, looks like an interesting villain. Plenty of good looks at Mjolnir. Also, the wide shot of Asgard isn’t quite as video game-ish as it initially appeared to be. Yes, the dialogue’s a little melodramatic at times, but it’s about an Asgardian god come to Earth, directed by a man with a taste for the Shakespearean. Gotta give a little leeway on that one. The effects look solid, and…

Destroyer looks friggin’ badass.

I had another nerdgasm.

This was teh sweetz. Even Mrs. Lantern wants to see Thor. And me? Oh, I'm finally down, clowns.

This movie seems to hit ALL the right notes...Loki's got his freakin' HORN HELMET, there are Frost Giants GALORE...SIF, freakin' Anthony Hopikins as BIG POPPA ODIN...I can overlook things like the tight black Thorshirt and the tiny Portman (I mean seriously...she's the littlest thing in most of those frames!).

Yep.

Is it nerd appreciation day today? I'm not complaining, I just want the chance to schedule more quality basement time & stockpile some Doritos.

This is recurring, right? I'll mark my calendar for next year.

More Sif less MRI fighting please!!

Another Yahoo! trailer? Hold on, let me load it and pause it for an hour or so before I try to watch it- I do so hate it when it looks like I'm watching ones of my kid's scratched DVD's. Yahoo!, you swallow.

The hammer is my what?

I can't see the point
But I see the attraction
Of the same thing, same way,
Every day
Stupefaction.

I really can't for the life of me figure out how you finished, what, 600, 800 comments behind me last year?

Damn, girl, you're EVERYwhere.

Idris Elba plays Heimdall, who is not one of the Warriors Three.

By Grabthar's hammer, by the Sons of Warvan, you shall be avenged.

I'm just excited he's going to be fighting Sharktopus.

Is is hammer secretly a boomerang? Because I'm distracted by the fact that he keeps throwing it away.

It is officially time for me to stop paying attention to this movie, because I am getting too excited. That's despite them apparently making Loki more of a physical threat than a schemer (because modern screenwriters aren't smart enough to handle the character as he truly is).

Posted by: Todd at February 18, 2011 9:31 AM

You don't even know who the Warrior's Three are, so no big surprise that you're stoked for this ridiculous movie. Thor looks like shit. Odin's old and weak. All the costumes look more like they came out of the Dolph Lundgren He-Man movie (which will probably sound like a compliment in the near future).

You've got zero cred, TK. You just jump up and down over every bone that's thrown to you.

Posted by: Bogo at February 18, 2011 9:34 AM

cant wait to read TK's comeback now.

Posted by: haplo at February 18, 2011 10:04 AM

I don't even like superhero/action movies and this looks...not that bad....

Posted by: grace b at February 18, 2011 10:23 AM

Dear Bogo,

You're quite correct, I mixed up The Warrior's Three. As such, all of my comic and movie credibility is indeed now suspect and I'll have to somehow find a way to repair the damage done to you and yours. I apologize, and my deepest sympathies to you for your utter lack of perspective, tact, humor, and for being the very embodiment of every painful geek stereotype out there. Seriously, that's a motherfucker of a burden, and you have my condolences.

To try to make up for it, I present you with this, in the hopes that you can find some small solace in it.

Posted by: TK at February 18, 2011 10:27 AM

The voice and the accent make me almost forgive Chris Hemsworth for that hair. Almost.

Posted by: Me at February 18, 2011 10:30 AM

THOR!
(dut...dut...dut...dut)
AHH-AAAHHH!
Big guy with a hammer, ja?

Posted by: Kettle at February 18, 2011 11:02 AM

Ha ha. Zero cred, yo. Dayim. That's harsh.

I think that xkcd comic can be used for rebuttal in nearly any online situation.

Posted by: Paultera at February 18, 2011 11:03 AM

Damn, people take this shit way to seriously and Bogo just got owned.

Posted by: allheavens at February 18, 2011 11:26 AM

Ah the "You take this more seriously than I do" gun. Oddly the gun only works for the person that pulls it first....

Thor looks ok but I just cant stand Portman and she's in every damn thing lately!

Posted by: logan at February 18, 2011 11:49 AM

TK, you're the wind beneath my wings.

Some times things need to be corrected, so everyone's on the same (right) page. Just don't be a douche about it.*

* Which is good advice at all times.

Posted by: RobP at February 18, 2011 12:13 PM

TK - I kind of want to go to all the comic book movies with you this summer. Unfortunately, my lack of knowledge of the source material will probably only serve to aggravate you. And I think that slices of bundt cake will only go so far to ameliorate the aggravation. (Also, bundt cake season will probably be over by then.) At least I'll get to read your reviews.

Posted by: tamatha at February 18, 2011 12:48 PM

I have no investment in this - I love mythology but have no knowledge of comic book Thor beyond the doll carried around in the Babysitters' Club movie.

However, despite the bizarro action and Shakespearean line readings by Thor, and despite the presence of the Portman, and despite an apparent Kraken at the end, this looks highly entertaining. I love the exterior shots of Asgard.

Btw, in mythology Thor's battle hammer can be thrown and return to his hand. Mjolnir. Man I love Norse words.

Posted by: Sara Tonin at February 18, 2011 1:18 PM

Sara Tonin,

Ahem, the movie you're referring to was Adventures In Babysitting. You got no babysitting cred.

Posted by: Paultera at February 18, 2011 1:51 PM

Also, it wasn't a doll, it was a Thor costume. We take our 80's comedies seriously around here.

Posted by: Craig at February 18, 2011 2:22 PM

Having never seen this so-called Babysitter's Club movie, I was willing to give Sara Tonin (nice!) the benny of the doubt. Maybe there is a Thor doll in that movie, and they just ripped off Adventures?

If not, though... Yeah. I'd never let you around my imaginary children, Sara.

Posted by: RobP at February 18, 2011 3:24 PM

I shall confess to all - I never read the books, nor saw the movie all the way through. (oddly enough, it was one of my college boyfriend's favorites. But he was a big softie. But not gay. Though he did also own Newsies.) So, as a non-fan, I simply got the name wrong. I do indeed have no cred in that arena.

I do have some cred in the actual child-care arena, as being in the middle of a brood of 8, and as a performer of far too much children's theatre. In fact, right now I'm "assistant directing" an opera with 28 children, which essentially means babysitting them.

ah, the dangers of multiple comment posting. I replied to RobP directly on the Pajiba Love thread.
