Things I Wish I Could Unsee: Jim Carrey Committing Sodomy

I Love You, Phillip Morris has been sitting on a shelf for three years now, not because it’s a bad movie necessarily, but because no one has dared to distribute it. It’s gone through a couple of distributors’ hands, several release dates have been announced, and new trailers are made, but it never quite makes it to theaters before the distribution company gets cold feet or goes belly up. It seems that a Jim Carrey/Ewan McGregor gay movie is not particularly marketable. But it’s been three years. Look how far we’ve come.

It looks like it’s finally going to arrive on December 3rd, and of the many trailers I’ve seen for Phillip Morris since Sundance 2007, this one actually looks the most compelling. Except for the Jim Carrey sex scene. It’s not that I’m squeamish about gay sex; it’s that I’m squeamish about Jim Carrey engaging in gay sex.

It’s not that I’m squeamish about gay sex; it’s that I’m squeamish about Jim Carrey engaging in gay any sex.

Fixed that for you, sugartits.

I didn't know know this was a comedy!

Huh, butt-sex looks tastefully done. Thing don't look half bad.

They are both excellent in this film, especially Carrey who gives his all into this performance wothout ever giving too much, and the sex scene is funny and very appropriately placed in the film (great timing, and it doesn't last more than three seconds or so) but the problem is the film doesn't know whether it wants to be a black comedy, white drama or a pink dramedy.
And, viva Europe, it's already on DVD's here...

That fella he's fucking looks an awful lot like Christian Bale, which made that scene doubly creepy for me. Carrey + Bale = Ew.

Wait this is a COMEDY!? I totally missed that the first 6 trailers I saw...this actually looks good, I'm glad to see Jim Carrey looking funny without being stupid...oh wait...

I knoooow, right. I was under the impression of it being some dark, depressing, Midnight Express level shit. This is very surprising.

It's not a bad movie, it's just ultimately unsatisfying.

Kind of like how I imagine gay sex with Jim Carrey to be, frankly. Well, at least until he went all daddy bear last year. That was HOT.

I should have typed

But somehow I must have been distracted by the stench of Jenny McCarthy while I was typing an italic tag.

"That fella he's fucking looks an awful lot like Christian Bale"

Really? I thought he looked more like Freddy Mercury, although that may have been intentional on the director's part. Or maybe he looked more like Bennett in 'Commando'...

None of you find Jim Carrey sexy during carnal activities? Hmmm, how can we change your minds?

I know! Imagine him doing a Fire Marshall Bill impression while thrusting his penis into your preferred orifice.

You may commence masturbations.

You aren't a well man, you know that, right?

*Shudder*

Cold. So...cold.

It wasn't great, but I got a few laughs out of it. Thought it was alright ... for a Jim Carrey film.

Jim's wig looks good in this. Almost jealous.

I've never ceased being a Jim Carrey fan because when he's on it he's fuckin' on it. Btw, The Number 23 sucked ass. I've been waiting for Philip Morris to come out for so long now, I can't take it anymore if they pull the rug out from under it again.

Don't tease me so - you know how weak I am...

Yeah, hang on, this is a FUNNY movie? I was also under the impression that it was some kind of dark fucked up thing about secret gayness that ends in tragic emotional trauma (I blame the presence of Ewan McGregor for my misunderstanding). I was not down for that. But I am down for funny!

Interesting... though not surprising that this was has been delayed so long in the US. I saw it in Singapore last week and it was very enjoyable. A comedic tearjerker.

Posted by: JQ at October 23, 2010 11:22 AM

This looks great! It's been a while since I've been excited about a comedy! But his accent is terrible. Where is he supposed to be from?

Posted by: McSquish at October 23, 2010 8:28 PM

Just get on the dl, fellas.

Posted by: Pork Bowl at October 24, 2010 1:39 AM

Or straight sex for that matter.

OK, I've seen this because they were showing it on international flights last spring. It is definitely a black comedy--there are giggle moments but it's light on the belly laughs you'd expect from Jim Carrey. There is also a bit of emotional manipulation of the audience for the sole purpose of demonizing a character they are trying to get you to like. It's strange. I hope they are not aiming for an Oscar by releasing it in December.
