I Think It's a Metaphor for Scandinavian Socialism

Hey it’s another found footage film! At this point there’s so much found footage out there, it’s amazing that people are still finding new places to look for it. If the movie industry is to be believed, one in every three video cameras sold in America each year is later found with mysterious video footage on it and the owners dead or missing. That would actually be a novel kick off for a film, the plot hook that all of the found footage films are actually real. There’s a vault or something somewhere.

Anyway, The Troll Hunter is a Norwegian mock documentary about film makers that hook up with the titular troll hunter to go looking for trolls, whom the Norwegian government have kept secret since forever up in the arctic wilderness. [glances over shoulder at hole in wall] Yep that was the suspension of disbelief being ejected like an apple from a … what? Too soon?

Word is that the film stays true to a lot of the off the wall elements of troll legends, like the connection with Christianity made in the trailer. The film was made for about $3 million and after private screenings at a few festivals has been picked up for a 2011 theatrical distribution by Magnet Films. No word on whether they’re going to dub it, but I’m dubious about this particular genre coming over to theaters with subtitles, since Americans like their subtitles like their midgets, short and on fire. The subtitles in the trailer have way too many exclamation points.

The giant yellow capitalized exclamations are...

Well, one said "THE MOST IMPORTANT FILM OF OUR TIME IS NORWEGIAN!"

I immediately flashed to an image of Kurt Russel in a giant hat and goggles, holding a flamethrower.

If you are making a documentary, you don't aim the camera at your own face. You aim it at the crap you're looking at or trying to get away from. And don't aim it up your nostrils. It'snot a good shot.

The special effects look crappy. I'm in.

I'm disappointed. I thought it was about a vigilante Pajiban in the real world hunting for the asshats that sometimes comment just for the sake of starting shit.

TROLL!!!!!!!

Did you see some of those goddamned things?! One of them was the size of an aircraft carrier! Others look like unkempt Wookies! Fucking trolls, man!!!

I want to see this so bad my soul is shaking. My mind was completely overrun by jokes during the trailer and I firmly believe that watching the entire movie will elevate me to a previously mythologized level of consciousness.

Only, a matter of time until, they get around to, misplacing me.

@,

Misplaced yes, but irreplaceable nonetheless.

I can't help myself. I am totally seeing this. I'm a sucker for folklore, even when it blows and the trolls are clearly CGI, which ruins the documentary setup pretty quickly.

Kittyface, the trolls aren't CGI. They're real. Hence the "found footage." Gawd, it's like you weren't even paying attention.

Too many exclamation points!!! Maybe Elaine Benes subbed this film!!!

Posted by: Roland at October 19, 2010 8:05 PM

I already saw this when it was called "The Blair Witch Project."

Oh, EJ, that was just lazy.

Posted by: Kballs at October 20, 2010 7:42 AM

I looove that photo in the header and the giant trolls (I love movies with giant creatures), but the movie just looks like something out of Siffy. The writing on the trailer is moronic, though. Stop using Watchmen font, Norwegians!

Posted by: figgy at October 20, 2010 11:00 AM

Kballs, I agree, but it was 4:43am and I'd been up about 19 hours. I was in a lazy mood.

Posted by: EJ at October 20, 2010 12:51 PM

"Siffy"??

figgy, I love you.
